hello all remember me? (the placenta previa grade 4) sorry I pulled out of the group. not sure why I did tbh but still around the other boards. thought I'd check in as sam's first birthday rapidly approaches.

all well here. sam has fitted in perfectly to family life and has done well despite his early and traumatic entry into the world. he's got 9 teeth now, weaned the blw way and has started walking in the last couple of days. He'll be 1 on monday so planning cake and tea with a couple of friends.

i'll be making this birthday cake so easy and hopefully will look impressive

am I right in thinking I've come across a new pregnancy from the oct 08 group?

ronshar · 09/09/2009 22:47

50Ft. I would have a good stash of great books at home so when DS comes home with boring school book then you can bargain with him. Say 2 pages of crap book then 2 pages of good book. I had to do that with DD1. She loved reading and now has reading age of 13 (boasty boast boast back at ya). We struggled through year 1. But by the end she was free reading.
Have you tried the Captain Underpants books? DD1 loved Fairy books probably no good for DS.

Good luck Pepper. Have fun on the train. Watch out for fussy sweets in your jacket pockets

Rachie, sounds like DS is getting on just fine at nursey.

Knackered after H party. H wants everyday to be her birthday. Had to remind her that she has school tomorrow.
Off to bed now.

Belgo good to have you back. Walking already. What fun for you

ronshar · 09/09/2009 22:49

Hello Twinkletoys. Yes it is Bethoo. She is expecting another girl. Not sure when but I think she is about 20 weeks.

Quick post as we have an open house night at school tonight. 50ft - I'm just about to talk to the parents of children in my class about reading and even if their child is reading at a "high level" this doesn't necessarily mean that all books at that level will be good for them as the content is not always appropriate for younger kids and there is a lot that goes on in "harder books" that kids miss out on if they read them at a young age - even if they can decode all of the words and retell the story verbatim. Children become life long readers and better readers who love reading if they read books appropriate for them. It's important to keep the learning going, but constantly reading "harder books" and stretching their decoding skills more does not necessarily improve their reading skills overall. I'll climb down off of my soap box now....

50ftQueenie · 10/09/2009 17:18

Star - I agree with you there, it is very difficult to avoid turning it into a battle which is obviously hugely counter productive. He does read a lot of his baby books to M which he enjoys doing and we encourage. DS is very very very competitive and battles to be top in the class with another boy. this makes it really hard to get him to chill out and enjoy what he's reading. He is instead much more focused on getting ahead of the other boy. He does understand the what he is reading as we ask him questions as we go through to make sure he is understanding rather than just repeating. He reads with lots of expression now too so I think that is a huge positive. He's so funny though, with reading and writing he is such a perfectionist that you can't get him to chill out but with maths (which he is in the second set for) he is so relaxed that it's a breeze to get him to understand things! Enjoy your parent's evening.

CantSleepWontSleep · 10/09/2009 20:40

Hello twinklytoes - lovely to see you back. Are you staying with us or just a fleeting visit?!

myjob - I think you might like to reread your post of 10:44 and look for the error!

No haircut here yet BB.

Ds and I full of cold, so with that and his teething I think it'll be another crap night, although he should be knackered enough to sleep well, as we woke him from what would prob have been a long nap to go into the swimming pool today (2nd swim this week, and we're going again on Sunday!).

Cross posted loulou. Happy birthday Joe.
No you haven't missed as much as you think - see my previous post - myjob meant crawling, not walking.

Are you all staying down for the weekend pistachio, or doing the whole return journey all in a day?
We're more into high level screaming than low level moaning this evening.

Happy birthday Joe! They're really growing up aren't they? I like the look of the rainbow block things Loulou.

Poor teething babies. M hasn't been too bad today with her teeth and has been in a much better mood. She is still very clingy though. I would love to go swimming with the DC CSWS, but I am far to to get in a swimming costume.

Hello Twinkletoes. I joined the group when the babies were about 3 months old so you won't know me. Nice to see you though.

So far for M I have chosen this this and some sort of trike thingy. I also want to get her a buggy sunggle thingy for the Stokke. I'm not sure whether to bother getting a custom made one or just a normal Stokke one. I have an old one for when she is forward facing.

Happy birthday Joe. I love your pressies, W would love to play with them.

50ft. I think that maybe Ds is doing really well and perhaps you are worrying a little too much(ronshar runs to avoid the shoe being thrown at her head).
School is a pressure cooker for parents. You do see all kinds of parents from the not caring to the, caring slightly too much. I so dont envy you teachers.
DH & I are currently trying to find a good secondary school for DD1. Local state schools are crap. So we are looking for a scholarship somewhere. Nightmare.

How are all of you ladies who have gone back to work? Is everything all going ok? I hope it isnt too traumatic leaving the little ones.

DD2 has her first whole day at school tomorrow. I think I am going to sit on Mumsnet all day

50ftQueenie · 10/09/2009 21:24

As if I would ever throw a shoe at you ronshar. I don't really worry that much about ds's schooling. I do get bloody frustrated with his lack of effort though. It wasn't too much of a problem in year 1 but this year they want the reading done every night which is tough when ds goes to my dad's on Tuesdays and gets home at 6.30 & is too tired to do his homework. I think at ds's school we are very rare creatures, parents that give a crap. The teachers seem overly grateful that we put in the effort. DS is the only kid not being held back with his reading as the teachers are confident that he will have enough books to read at home once he is on the 'free reading' level. There is one little boy who gets help with his homework at school as his parents just aren't interested. Poor little lad.

pepperrabbit · 10/09/2009 21:25

Evening all!
Work went well, cripplingly early start for a suit, hair and make-up though! Not that it's appreciated I suspect...
Everything pretty much as I left it a year ago couple of hours on the phone to the IT helpdesk and I was up and running, lunch from the deli in the staff canteen, got to eat biscuits on my own AND go to the loo on my own, .
When I left this morning however both DSs screaming, as they woke up just before I left and were distraught, DS2 was mid-poo so this was not pretty, they were shouting "when are you back mummy, when are you back!" and I'm shouting to DH - "Get up, now!!!!Right Now" he was in bed logged on to his laptop - he seems to have no idea that you Cannot Work With Them In The House.
It was 6.45am.
I fair skipped out of the house.
DD slept thro all palavar, had a lovely day at nursery and was thrilled to see me this evening.
myjob - please tell me N can't walk! J's only been crawling maybe 3 weeks!

ronshar · 10/09/2009 21:31

Pistachio, enjoy the adult time during the day and enjoy the snuggles in the evening with the DC. I am in London on Tuesday. Its a shame we dont overlap.

50ft. Nice toys, I am going to check out the website.

CSWS, how is your mum?

ronshar · 10/09/2009 21:52

Pepper sounds like a great day. How is DH now? On his knees yet?

50ft, sorry as if you would risk damaging a shoe. I feel so very sorry for all the children in our country who live like that

CantSleepWontSleep · 10/09/2009 21:55

ronshar - she saw surgical team yesterday, and apparently it's 'much worse' than mum and dad thought, but part of dad's emotional blackmail is not to bother telling me any more than that, so I don't know really.

Sorry to hear about your mum CSWS. As Pistachio said it must be so much harder for you given the current situation.

I was thinking that we must all come up and visit you in Scotland Pistachio!

Ronshar - I am dreading secondary school time for ds. If he doesn't get into grammar (we still have them here) it's going to be a nightmare. One of the local secondary schools is the worst school in the country, or at least it was a few years ago. He won't be going there...... Good luck with the scholarship. DH came 5th when he applied for a scholarship to Eton, there were three places up for grabs. I agree about all the poor little ones in this country. I could never be a social worker. I would just take all the children home with me and give them hot chocolate and cuddles.

Pepper - The lovely detail about DS2 being mid-poo almost made me splurt my tea. It made it so real! Glad you had a good day and glad J was so happy to see you tonight.

Myjob - I think you've been rumbled. I reckon N can walk, run, climb etc etc etc.....
