Right back for a proper post....

Myjob - Voting closes on the 31st October.... It is soooooo far away! We will find out within the following two weeks.

Hello Belgo. I have seen you around on many other threads and noticed you on the list for October 2008. Nice to 'see' you!

Poor T Pistachio. M has her tiny bottom front teeth coming through and is positively pre-menstrual in mood! She is soooo grumpy. Such a big drama queen.

Thank you for your views about ds's reading. i am sometimes quite hard on him but it's only when I know he is being a lazy arse. He was better tonight but not great. I think when he finds a book boring he shuts down. I did get things put into perspective a bit today though. I was chatting to another mum about how long the reading home work has been taking (ds's books are 32 pages long with an average of about 150 words on each page). She told me that her ds had found last night's book hard going and then mentioned what level of book he was on. DS is 5 levels above him and was on that level in year R. Maybe I should ease up on DS..... or maybe I should push him more as he is obviously very capable....

Thanks for all your reassuring posts about work and Nursery. I took J today and it went so much better than I expected. I stayed to settle him for about 20mins then he managed 2.5hours on his own. He seemed to love the toys there and liked the staff. They all seemed great, very calm and caring. Apparently he cried a little when I left, then only when other babies cried. He also managed to have a sleep for them but refused his bottle (not surprised as he's done this for the grandparents too) and screamed at nappy change so they left him as he was only wet and I was due to collect him. Overall the woman in charge of the baby room said he'd done really well. He cried when I arrived then after a quick hug wanted to get down and play again Am feeling v.positive at the moment about it all

Pistachio- Sorry to hear about teething pain. A friend has warned me that the molars are bad. I hope they all come through soon.

50ft- I also think you did the right thing with ds' reading record. I'd much rather parents are honest, that way you know that it isn't the difficulty of the text that is the problem but the interest. I can't remember what year your ds is but two books my last year 4 class loved, and these were books that were a bit lower than year 4 level for a class that weren't really into reading, were 'The Giggler Treatment' by Roddy Doyle (about creatures called gigglers who get revenge on parents who tell their children off by making them tread in dog poo- sounds a bit urgh but it's funny), and Spy Dog by Andrew Cope (basically about a dog that is a spy). I don't know if he'd like either of those?

Right off to do some planning for work but will be keeping an eye on here for sanity!

Sounds interesting Rachie. DS has just started year 2 but he is reading at an 8 year old level. I like Roddy Doyle so I will seek out that book.

I remember a thread on here many years ago, before I was an MNer and was just browsing the net about a short story that some school children had been given to read. It was called Henry's Cage. Has anyone read it?

pepperrabbit · 09/09/2009 21:58

Evening all,
just popping in as I hurtle around getting ready for tomorrow, Rachie - glad your first days went well and nursery OK. J seems to have settled really quickly at hers but she has DS2 to go with which helps.
I have literally just dusted my handbag and work shoes !! And spent a while choosing a book to read on the train .
Really need to put in some thought re the actual work stuff - the logistics have fully occupied me so far, could be a bit of a shock in the morning.
Think of me on the 6.54 bus to the station
Right, need to go find some tights...

pepperrabbit · 09/09/2009 22:00

ah, 50ft, DS1 is a muppet at reading. Just started Y1 and cried last night when he realised his first book was 16 pages long. Poor thing is really struggling, and it desperately tries my patience as he can't recognise the same word, barely 3 words later

50ftQueenie · 09/09/2009 22:07

Pepper - DS was exactly the same at the start of year 1. I was so close to murdering him over the word 'was'. I amount of times I told him that word. He kept saying 'wAs' rather than 'wos'. It was hellish! Now he is top of his class. DS will get his confidence, my ds still cries with frustration when he can't read a word. He also does a lot of guessing at words and makes really strange guesses. Tonight, getting him to read was totally exhausting. Good luck tomorrow, hope you enjoy being back in the world.

I found my marriage certificate in my handbag, two years after claiming it was lost forever and that I had looked everywhere! Are the Stars still in date?

pepperrabbit · 09/09/2009 22:20

Sadly not, I had to throw them away....

50ftQueenie · 09/09/2009 22:21

Aww that's a shame. They would have been like a prize for dusting...

BertieBotts · 09/09/2009 22:23

Argh, I went to post and then went away for a bit and you have all been chatting loads

Ryan is fairly high up on the list (21st) but I haven't met any other baby Ryans yet so we shall see. I think girls' names seem to change so much more than boys and when I was at school boys didn't seem so bothered about sharing first names - most of them went by their surnames anyway!

Haven't read Henry's Cage, sorry. I like children's books though There was a boxset of teenage fiction at the place we stayed on holiday (I'd recommend them btw if anyone is ever going to the Isle of Wight, especially for families) and I read through nearly the whole lot! It seems that without internet I revert back to books in my spare time which is interesting! I am loving the scary children's book thread at the moment as well.

I wanted to ask actually - has anyone had their baby's hair cut yet? Ryan has so much hair and it is gorgeous when it has just been washed but as soon as he eats and gets food in it or gets the slightest bit sweaty it looks really messy and like I never wash it, ever! I have been trying to put off the first haircut but I can't help wondering if it would look tidier... I just can't work out the logistics of it. Should I do it myself, find a children's hairdresser, or what? Is it better to do it when he's asleep? I was only thinking of a trim rather than shaving it or anything, but maybe that would be safer? I have no brothers (well none I have lived/grown up with) so boys' haircuts are a complete mystery!

50ftQueenie · 09/09/2009 22:29

BB - M has had two haircuts already as she has masses of thick hair (as you will have seen). It's not soft and fluffy like baby hair. I cut it myself and just trimmed the curly bits off. I cut ds's hair when he was very little and just chopped off the problem bits. Is there a scary children's book thread?
