popsycal - from about 4 months I used to express every evening at about 9pm (having put baby down at 7pm). I didn't ever get a lot of milk - just 2-3 oz but I stored it up in the freezer. Then when I was back at work I expressed twice a day (morning and afternoon) and took the milk home with me in a coolbag.

Then I just supplied a couple of bottles a day of EBM (ca 4-6oz). And that was it.

I can tell you more if you have any questions. It worked great for me.

Cristina7 · 07/07/2005 22:53

Pidge - well done for being so diligent about expressing milk with your first daughter. I hope it works out this time too (if needed).

Jambot - my MN nickname isn't all that interesting. I chose no. 7 because others were taken and 7 could stand for my birthday (7th Feb). I like your nickname. I hadn't made the connection until now.

Leogalea - have a nice time on holiday.

Sylvia doesn't roll yet either. She turns on one side and another and to 90 degrees but no rolling yet. Now she likes being on her tummy a bit more and lifts her head up beautifully.

I can totally sympathise with the fear of losing digitally stored photos. That's how we have all of Sylvia's and the thought has crossed my mind too, especially since our computer is playing up too (we discovered it's from overheating).

Yesterday and today I've been eating lots of sweets: cakes, sesame seeds, loads of biscuits. I need to get back on track as my weight loss has been slowing down.

Ooops, Sylvia's crying.

popsycal · 08/07/2005 09:00

pidge - that is exactly my plan
i am back a week on monday just for 4 days (grrrr) but back prpoerly in september

how did you find expressing at work?
when did you put dd1 on solids?

Cristina7 · 09/07/2005 09:49

Hi. How's everyone? I gave Sylvia some porridge this morning and she wolfed it down. I had to express some milk as she didn't want to feed from both sides this morning and thought it wasn't enough to make a bottle so used it for some baby porridge instead.

How's everyone else? The weather here (London) is overcast. DH and DS are going to see "The war of the worlds" today. I saw it on Wednesday at the parent & baby screening at the local Odeon. Sylvia slept through much of it (just as well).

misdee · 09/07/2005 10:06

we've had a frantic week as most of you kow. i have forgtton about enjoying dd3, as was so busy worrying. but yesterday reminded me of how precious she was. my dad was in the hospital canteen with dd3, dad had his back to me, dd3 was looking over his shoulder. she spotted me and started laughing and wriggling, it was so funny, cute, lovely etc. she is such a little love.

Sylvia rolled over today - and noone was there to see it We were all at home and she was unsupervised for literally half a minute... Right, if I hear anyone going on about working mums missing out on developmental milestones i'll wring her neck. Mum, Dad and older brother were at home, Sunday, nothing else to do and we missed this. Oh, never mind, plenty more where this came from

shalaa · 10/07/2005 22:20

Hope you get a chance to rest soon Misdee.

Cristina the same happened to us! Caleb was on his front both me and DP started talking, looked back a few seconds later and he was on his back. We both missed it!

Lately when Caleb has been crying he sounds like he's saying mama over and over again! Also he's got very clingy and screams if anyone other than me holds him. Has also started hating his pushchair and insists I carry him everywhere! I know I could just be strict but when his little eyes look at me full of tears and his lip wobbles I just give in. Can't believe he's 5 months on Monday!!!!! and i'm already a complete walk over and wrapped around his little finger!

Cristina7 · 10/07/2005 22:28

Shalaa, have you got a sling for carrying Caleb? I have one (of many) with me at all times when I take Sylvia in the pram because she's become so nosey she needs to be in my arms and have a good look around. The same when she feeds, if there's even the smallest distraction she'll stop and forget to turn back to feeding. So no relaxed TV watching for me. There goes another myth about the benefits of breastfeeding!

shalaa · 10/07/2005 22:30

Hi Cristina,

I've got 3 slings and am just about to buy one of them backpack baby carriers! Caleb is 16lbs + now and my back is killing me from carrying him. If we just go out for a short while I take the sling but for longer trips it's awkward. He's also very nosy which is why he hates been in the pushchair!

misdee · 10/07/2005 22:30

can u recommend a nice summer wrap sling for me please. my moby is a bit warm.

OP posts:
Cristina7 · 10/07/2005 22:38

Misdee, I've never tried a wrap yet. I have a couple of pouch slings, a couple of ring slings, a Mei Tai and a Wilkinet. Now I feel more confident about slings I might venture to a wrap as well, but not for a while yet.

misdee · 10/07/2005 22:40

wrap is lovely and comfty. ust a tad too warm.

OP posts:
shalaa · 10/07/2005 22:42

Ours are just the bog standard clip round the back with shoulder straps and baby dangling in front. Not tried any of the cloth slings, has anyone on here tried them??

misdee · 10/07/2005 22:44

me lol. i have a moby. have been looking at some others in lighter cloth.

OP posts:
Cristina7 · 10/07/2005 22:50

Yes, Shalaa, see post below, they are all cloth, apart from the Wilkinet which is a bit closer to the usual baby carriers.

Pidge · 11/07/2005 08:55

popsycal - I put dd1 on solids at 6 months - that was 2 weeks after starting work. I think her nursery thought I was engaged in child cruelty starving her - that was before the weaning guidelines in the UK were brought in line with the WHO.

Expressing at work varied in success - it took a few weeks to get the hang of it. But I was lucky that things were very quiet so I was never too pressurised.

Will type more another time - but doing this one handed with Iris on my lap!

Busy week looming with dd1's third birthday party to organise for Saturday, then off to Wales again next Tues, where I'll have access to broadband and will be on here every day!

jambot · 11/07/2005 11:04

Poor Lauren is back at my mothers. DH and I are still sick and after trying to have her back home for two nights, I decided we needed another 24 hours to recover. I spent the entire night awake coughing, coughing, coughing! DH wasn't much better. Just can't seem to shake this bad chest. Have been on antibiotics, the lot and it isn't any better. Luckily we have a very easy little angel who will quite happily stay over at either my mother or DH's mother. She has charmed their socks off and they are now fighting to have her back! She was lying cuddling with DH in bed this morning as I got her things ready (marathon job that!) and felt so much love for that little girl that I thought I would burst. Silly Mummy!
Now that I have ditched the horrid old porridge, and am giving Lauren pears and sweet potato she is polishing it off. Opening her mouth nicely and full of smiles after every mouthful. Will stay on these two for a week before trying butternut and apple. Only down side to the solids is a very smelly nappy this morning that the poor little thing must have done in the middle of the night. Doesn't seem to bother her sleeping with such a horrible nappy.
Went to the midwife on friday, and Lauren cried for the first time. She normally loves her - is it too early for them to start getting scared of people they don't really know? She has gone to anyone up till now. Lauren now weighs 16 pounds and is 26 inches long. (17 weeks).

jambot · 12/07/2005 15:39

Poor Popsycal - you really did get a hammering from old windbag Hercules in the food forum discussion about solids before 6 months! Have to say I was behind you as I have started solids at 17 weeks and Lauren is thrilled. Everyone to their own. Millions started on solids before 6 months in days gone by (me included) and we aren't all obese with allergies as she implies we should all be. Apparently it's worse for the gut to be fed too much milk (over one litre) than to introduce solids. Lauren was nearly up to a litre, so you have to make a decision.

JoPG · 12/07/2005 21:50

Hi! I'm new to this, but thought I would introduce myself. I have a little girl called Freya who was born on 17 March 2005 (St Patrick's Day). She is now 16 weeks and weighs in at 15lb 8 ozs. She has just had her last lot on injections and we will now be able to join her dad and big brother (Ethan - age 4) at swimming on Sunday. We are really looking forward to it.
Hope to keep up with this post natal group, and to catch up with how all the babies are doing.

popsycal · 12/07/2005 21:56

jambot - did i???????
where?!?!?!

Cristina7 · 12/07/2005 21:58

Hi JoPG - welcome here. I have a daughter called Sylvia (born 1 march) and a son Dominic who is 5.

Cristina7 · 12/07/2005 23:42

This evening Sylvia had a shower with her big brother. She wasn't fussed at all about it, really enjoyed it in fact. I got very wet as I had to keep the doors to the cubicle open so i could hold her. This morning she sat on her tummy for a long time (about 10 minutes) without crying for the first time. She was watching me and others jumping about at the gym.

jambot · 13/07/2005 07:39

Sorry Popsycal. Must have lost it there. It was actually Norash. Sorry.

ZoeC · 13/07/2005 10:45

Hi all (and welcome JoPG)

probably shouldn't post today since I'm in a bad mood but I'll try not to complain . rebecca is now rolling loads (seems so odd as dd1 never did) - wakes her up at night though which isn't great combined with the heat and whatever else it is that made her want to feed every 2 hours last night . Dh tried to give her a bottle at 11pm as I'd not kept any food down all day and was exhausted but she wouldn't have a bar of it so I ended up feeding her anyway. We are going to have to have a serious chat about refusing bottles pretty soon, rebecca and I, since i go back to work in about 10 weeks and she'll have no choice.

Part of me is really fed up of breastfeeding altogether so I'm getting more and more tempted to stop and starve her into taking a bottle, but then I'd probably get mastitis and regret it so I'll start with aiming for one bottle a day and see how I go. Am gonna try feeding her while walking around like you did popsy, see if that works. Be so nice to be able to get dh to do a night feed occasionally (or better still if she stopped wanting them ).
