Morning all,

Just had S weighed as I was worried he wasn't ever finishing a feed as he gets windy and it takes ages to get it up, even with gripe water. He's only gained 140g (3.5oz) in 2 weeks. The HV suggested expressing and giving bottle top-ups but not sure whether it's worth the effort as he gets windy with the bottle too and is already having 1-2 bottles of EBM a day so i would need to fit in another expressing session. We might start infacol again to see if that helps. Anyone got any other advice for dealing with wind- she also suggested propping up the cot and sitting him in bouncy chair after a feed but he does that anyway as I can't lie him flat for more than 5-10mins without it resulting in crying due to hiccups or wind

FiKelly · 04/08/2009 12:51

pula does the infacol work for you? we had better success with the dentinox version with ds. there was a third suggestion from our hv back then it cost a lot more £10? if the dentinox hadn't worked.. can't remember the name of that one though. does s cry a lot before feeds? ds got a lot better as he got older too.

flippineck · 04/08/2009 12:57

Back again! Both girls are asleep in the pushchair. I know I should wake DD1 up as I'll pay for it at bedtime but I am having a lovely peaceful few moments. They both fell asleep coming back frommy friend's house, and I was right about the velcro toddler, DD1 didn't venture more than about 4 steps from me all morning. And I got caught in the rain.

pula - have you tried baby massage? The basic bits I know for wind are rubbing tummy clockwise with the palm of your hand; kind of stroking downwards with both hands from chest to tummy (one hand after the other so it's kind of a continuous thing, if that makes sense, probably something on Youtube if you're not sure); and then rubbing/stroking LO's side (from side to tummy). All while LO is on their back.

We've got a tummy tub for bathing babies, and a warm bath in that always brings up loads of wind and sick, I guess cos it's warm and they're upright. Not practical after every feed I know, but it might help if the evenings are terrible.

fi - did you make biscuits? That would have been my suggestion too.

runningmonkey - hope you have a good time with your mum, and enjoy your haircut tomorrow, sounds great!

flippineck · 04/08/2009 12:59

I think colief is the expensive wind product. A friend of mine swears by it; apparently the instructions say to put it in a bottle, but she's always just put a drop on LO's tongue during/after a feed.

Febes · 04/08/2009 13:01

Grey and drizzling here too. DH got back last night!!!! Earlier than expected so it was lovely to see him. I've just found out he is back at work this afternoon. I thought he would have today at home at least!!

pulapula · 04/08/2009 13:17

Fi- not sure the infacol did much but thought i'd try again. I think there's colief that costs about £10 but never tried it. He doesn't cry before a feed really- i tend to feed him as soon as he's fussing a bit. I might try what Febes does and split the feed up a bit (20 min gap between sides) to see if that makes it easier for him.

pulapula · 04/08/2009 13:19

Flippineck- i might give the colief a go, just to see what it can do- I give bottles in the evening anyway so could test it out. I've tried massage too.

FiKelly · 04/08/2009 13:52

biscuits underway had to wait for butter to soften. dough in fridge firming up a bit now. ds enjoying himself even with the washing up!

colief that was the one i couldn't remember. my hv said to me at the time when all other formulations didn't work it usually did.. so worth a shot.

Momino · 04/08/2009 14:03

Pula, i don't think infacol worked either. do try colief as i've heard it does work.

flippin, well done for getting out anyway. the velcro toddler is a very familiar thing for me as well.

fi, what did you bake? i hope biscuits!

i made a time-consuming pizza base by carelessly dumping all the flour in at once. was too dry so i spent a good hour -usually only takes 10 min- kneading and gradually adding water. it's taken away from my other tasks of laundry, emptying/filling dishwasher, general housework and giving dd's attention. in any case I'm amazed and grateful dd1&2 played and Harper had a good long nap to allow me to do so.

had to cut my other post to turn off oven, switch BF sides...

reebee, we had an alcohol related argument
as well a couple of days ago. on another note great find for the coast dress!

running, hope jabs/weighing go well. also, cant wait to see you new hairdo (you must post a pic).

reggiee, hope the courier came in time for you to go out.

Fi, forgot to say don't beat yourself up about missing the appointment. it happens to everyone. and now you don't have to worry about jabs for another couple of weeks .

biscuit dough ready to roll.. as soon as g stops this feed i'm getting the oven on

momino i'm just angry at myself for missing the appointment.. but as you say at least g can avoid the calpol for a few weeks more.

FiKelly · 04/08/2009 18:11

ds & i now have a large pile of alphabet biscuits and that's after eating a large number too. we still have the other half of the dough in the fridge so we can make more tomorrow after playgroup in the am. maybe even do some icing on them too..

Blottedcopybook · 04/08/2009 18:39

Running Thank you! It's held up well on my new hair but on the hair that's been bleached the dye just fell right out so it really needs done again already. Ah well!

Fi I cancelled Greer's first lot because the clinic is on a day where I'd have had to take all four kids with me. I managed her six week check with them all then had a panic about taking them to the vaccinations so she only had her first ones on Thursday past.

Holiday was good thanks everyone who asked! Weather made it a bit rubbish but the getting away part was ace. Drove from Brighton to Glasgow in one day though and that's an experience I don't care to repeat in a hurry!

FiKelly · 04/08/2009 19:30

brighton to glasgow in one day would not be a nice experience with all the dc's.. we did weston-super-mare to edinburgh last june with just ds who was nearly 2 and that was hard enough, he was too excited to sleep and had to be kept occupied for the whole trip..

flippineck · 05/08/2009 07:38

That was a quiet evening - hope everyone is ok!

Well, we survived another bedtime. I was right that the nap at lunch time was a mistake...DD1 didn't got to sleep until 9pm, and was really grumpy too, fab. A was vry good, I just had her in the sling while I was sorting everything, I woke her about 9:30 to feed, change nappy, PJs and she went straight back to sleep until 6 this morning.

Brighton to Glasgow sounds like hell! We have to drive for 6 hours to get to my parents, and that's plenty enough for me.

FiKelly · 05/08/2009 07:52

urghh.. morning. it's going to be a v long day i've been up since ds woke at 5am then been feeding/winding g. i'm full of a grotty cold.. headache, snot and sore throat this morning too.. not a good start to the day

flippineck · 05/08/2009 08:04

oh fi, poor you. Hope your day isn't too bad and that you feel better soon.

Jennster · 05/08/2009 08:39

Morning all. Going to have to build the cot for dd2 as she has well and truely grown out of the crib. She woke for a feed at 4.30 and didn't go immediately back to sleep because I put her back in her crib rather than staying in my bed. She spent the next hour cooing, laughing and whacking the side of the crib with her arms and kicking it. 'Twas an eco crib from mothercare made from cardboard. Don't think they sell them anymore, but it lasted all 3 skids. I can't quite bring myself to recycle it. Might pass it on to be reused.

Jennster · 05/08/2009 08:40

Fi hope you feel better soon. A nice hot steamy shower might make you feel better.

ReeBee · 05/08/2009 08:41

morning,

fi, what a rubbish start to your day.

just having a quick read while feeding F. we have his first jabs this morning and i feel okay about it but maybe that's because i have no idea what to expect...

Jennster · 05/08/2009 08:46

I'm switching the computer off and walking away! Might get some house work done today.

Reggiee · 05/08/2009 08:53

Another one here feeling grotty so Fi you have my sympathies. I've had this cold/cough/sore throat for two weeks now, and it's getting worse as hitting my sinuses. Went to bed at 7pm last night. Compounded by start of period yesterday and I forgot that the first period for me last time was minging and have been flooding and flooding last night / today...HAve I said too that I think I have some form of vaginal prolapse so daredn't use tampons . Sigh.

Memememememe...

Febes · 05/08/2009 09:12

Yesterday one of our hens escaped under the fence to the neighbours who have a staffie dog who chased it but luckily didn't get it. Anyway the hen ran for it and we looked everywhere for her but couldn't find her and thought that she wouldn't survive the night . But this morning she was sitting in the neighbours garden so she must have hid up the tree . She was thirsty and tired but very pleased to be back in the hen house.

pulapula · 05/08/2009 09:17

Febes- that's really good that your hen is OK and back home

Fi- hope your day gets better - does your DS still nap in the day or is that it now til bedtime?

We have S's 2nd lots of jabs today- I have to take DD with me too but she should be ok about it. When i told her, she said "do you think he will cry?" and i said "probably" and she said "i will take his favourite rattle to cheer him up afterwards" .

runningmonkey · 05/08/2009 09:28

Hi All,

just a quick post from me, sorry to Fi and Reg and others feeling grotty, hot honey and lemon all round.

Febes glad you found your hen and she is ok, I'm scared sh*tless by Staffies so can't imagine being hen sized and chased by one!

reebee A's first jabs were yesterday. She did scream causing an old lady in the waiting room to comment to my mum that she had a good pair of lungs on her (and she also gave the nurse a hilariously dirty look) but was ok afterwards if a little hot in the afternoon. I gave her some calpol when she felt warm. My friend since told me that she was advised to feed during the jabs and her DD didn't even flinch, apparently just stopped sucking for a second! Others have said calpol 20mins beforehand can help too as it makes them a bit dopey but I'm not so keen on doing that idea myself (feels a bit like having a resolve before a bender to prevent a hangover iyswim!). Hope it goes well.

Well...

Amazing night here, after a v unsettled day (apart from good morning) sleep, DH managed to settle A in her carrycot at 10.20. She slept in there until 1am when I fed her. Managed to settle her back in there at 2.10am and she slept until 5.10. Fed her again she had a doze until just before 7 then fed again and has been sleeping in the carrycot since just before 8. This time she settled herself with the dummy. Can I please be excused by those for being a bit like this ? First night she has slept on her own since birth!!! Am hoping it makes her days a bit more settled too.

Have a good day all x x
