i also have another theory. H obviously has your metabolism! in that he can eat and eat and eat and not put on any weight!

I have proof fellow mumsnetters you should see gui at a chinese buffet!!! case in point!

PuzzleRocks · 26/08/2009 20:49

Gui, my love, please please don't be upset.

I have been starving my baby for the last 5 months"
Obviously not. The paed said he was perfectly healthy so get that bloody daft idea out of your idea or I may need to stalk you down and thrash you! Oh yes!

"I clearly can't trust my instincts as a mother."
Utter bollocks. You have been doing an amazing job.

I'm sorry, but if has been given a clean bill of health then why is his weight an issue? Am I missing something?
Effing charts.

AuldAlliance · 26/08/2009 21:05

Oh, Guimauve, you sound so upset about this, and you are being really hard on yourself. I know excessive guilt is part of a mother's remit, but please listen to everyone on here.

You have BF your baby for 5 months, which in MN terms seems relatively little but believe me, is 5 months longer than most women around where I live. You have given H your milk, which has provided him with a clean bill of health, and which will have given him invaluable immunity and antibodies. You have NOT starved him, on the contrary.

The palaver of formula will get easier. And as someone said, he'll soon be onto solids: if, as it seems, your baby just isn't into milk, he'll grow like mad once he gets onto bananas, avocados, porridge, etc. You've done all you could and more, and your instincts are spot on.

And you are NOT being over-indulgent; everyone is talking sense to you, but most if not all of us would feel pretty much the way you do in your situation (cf above re excess guilt...!).

Have a huuuuuuuuge glass of wine/whisky/ G&T, or whatever your particular poison is.

AuldAlliance · 26/08/2009 21:06

Boff, will e-mail you...

BoffinMum · 26/08/2009 21:16

Yes, Gui, he'd be dead by now if you'd been starving him, you silly moo!! Enjoy the formula ... it means you can now zip off without a care in the world and escape when you like.

Any pictures of the Chinese buffet raiding??????

AuldAlliance · 26/08/2009 21:30

BTW, I put a new pic of A on my profile a few day ago (hint, hint).

I am taking A to his CM's tomorrow, staying for a while and then leaving him for 30mins-1hr. We'll increase that time and by next Thur he'll be there from 8am-4:30pm four days a week.
In compliance with that excess guilt thing I referred to above, I am feeling like shit tonight. I know deep down he'll be fine, but I just want to have my baby with me for a little longer.

mrsgboring · 26/08/2009 21:34

Gui Massive unMNetty hugs coming your way.

I totally understand where you are coming from on all your feelings. All I can say is you and me both, sister. Your paed sounds like s/he's been quite gratuitously horrible to you. Indulgent my big fat furry arse, as DH would say.

As the others have said, please don't beat yourself up over formula topups. If they work, well great they work. If they don't well it proves you couldn't possibly have got any more milk into him even with bionic breasts and a time machine.

On top of this, you still have options open to you. You still have solids to play with, which you will introduce soon or now if you want. (Sorry, consider me the Devil sitting on your shoulder if it helps)

In the meantime, Hugo has a clean bill of health and no underlying conditions. My DS1 was a tiny baby who didn't really thrive on milk alone and he's now a huge 3.75 year old genius bruiser boy. It really will be okay.

I have to go and deal with Edmund as he has a cold and won't settle, but do get in touch if you want a chat with someone who's in a similar boat.

As usual I'll have waffled on and X-posted with everyone so shall post this now.

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 26/08/2009 21:53

Feierabend hope your buggy is drying out ok! I have finally got round to putting our old buggy on eBay, really hope it sells as I airily said 'I'll sell the old one' to DP when I was persuading him we needed to buy a new one.....

Puzzle no need for blushing! I only have DS1 to go on in my BLW knowledge, and he was always a very dextrous child, so who knows. But we certainly had no problems introducing cutlery, although he does like to scoop out his juice with his spoon, but that's a separate problem....

Auld A is a cutie! Look at that lifting his head right up, too. Strong boy. Good luck with the CM - you know he'll be fine, don't beat yourself up about things that you can't change. He's had your undivided attention for 4 months, and now he'll have someone else doting on him too.

Must go to bed, am knackered.

JumeirahJane · 27/08/2009 06:27

Auld - how cute is A? Head held high as you like.

Gui - had the same problem a few weeks ago when Millie dropped off the charts, and the silly mare doc told me to supplement feeds - all credit to you if you have the patience and time in the day to express or faff about with formula as well as to BF. Personally I felt that if you've got a baby who loses interest in milk very quickly, trying to get her to take a bottle as well was too high a mountain to climb. Instead we simply increased frequency to 3 hours (little and often), and bingo, next weight check she'd gained the equivalent of an ounce a day. Not that I'd ever advocate ignoring professional advice, but GO WITH YOUR INSTINCTS, and please trust yourself to find the best solution for your family. If he's healthy, you've been doing everything right so far! Sending good vibes to you

JumeirahJane · 27/08/2009 07:16

Ps Gui, eat a bar of cadbury's finest - it'll make you feel heaps better and makes the milk chocolatey

WFH - How funny, Ellen does that with her drinks too.

Boff Said pics will be provided on Facebook grouop very shortly!

Gui, Hope you are feeling better this morning!

Feierabend · 27/08/2009 07:43

Good morning. Hourly wakings last night, from 1am onwards. This was the third really bad night in a row. And the ILs will decend on me in about an hour...

Off to catch up before I go and have a shower.

Feierabend · 27/08/2009 07:44

descend. Bloody tiredness.

Feierabend · 27/08/2009 07:52

Auld - A is so cute. Lovely photo, too.

WFH, Puzzle - another toddler here who likes eating juice / water / milk with a spoon. And spilling it everywhere in the process.

Must go make myself look presentable now...

FrogmellaMoonbeam · 27/08/2009 09:02

Gui please dont beat yourself up about the formula. At least youve managed 5mths of exclusive BF which is 5mths more than I managed and I regret that and kick myself about it every day. Ive now upset Oscar by typing that as it has made me cry! Along with everyone else on here you have battled and fought your way through the last 5mths doing the best you can for your baby whereas I just gave up at the first hurdle. If you had been starving him and doing a bad job he wouldnt have got a clean bill of health would hexXx

Feierabend · 27/08/2009 09:16

Aaaaargh I HATE broadband providers!!!!

JumeirahJane · 27/08/2009 09:40

On a caffeine and sugar high after half a cafetiere and an apricot muffin, oops . And hungrymonster is waking from her nap, she's going to get more than she bargained for... I couldn't feel more guilty if I'd downed half a bottle of sauv.

What to do? My clinic no longer accepts direct billing with my health insurance programme (and of course no lovely free NHS here in Dubai) and M is halfway through her immunisation schedule. For the sake of not having to claim back £100s-worth, do I try starting with a new unknown doc, and possibly a different schedule? Lost precious sleep worrying about it. It's not as if the doc is particularly brilliant, but given that her ante-natal and post-natal medical notes are already scattered far and wide across 2 countries, is some consistency better than none? Sorry, don't expect answers, musing aloud helps clarify thoughts.

dawntigga · 27/08/2009 11:01

Everyone that's it, there will be no feeling guilty about the way we feed our children on this or any other thread we create!!!!!! You do what you do and it's what is right for you! If anyone else says different you point them in my direction and I'll beat them to a bloody pulp have a chat with them so they see the error of their ways.

I'm putting my foot down with a firm hand!

Feier, that sounds grim (not the IL's, the night). Any idea why she's waking? You must be feeling like death warmed up.

JumeirahJane, not sure what to advise re doctor: maybe what is easiest, if you can afford to take that approach?

Thanks for the (utterly spontaneous ) remarks re Alex's photo. He is so huge and strong it is amazing...
The first session at the CM's went fine - for Alex. DS1 on the other hand, dealt with it v badly, leant over A in the pushchair when we got there to 'protect' him from his lovely CM, refused to speak to her, and informed me on our way back there that he hoped A had cried a lot and annoyed the CM because she is 'not nice'. He is sooooo terribly complicated, that boy. There was me fretting about A and I hadn't predicted that DS1 would freak out. I have had a long chat with him about how important it is for Alex that he senses we are positive about the CM, about how hard I looked for someone to take good care of A while I am at work, and about why I have to work.
Inside, I am p'd off with DS1 for making everything more difficult than it has to be. And so I feel guilty again...

Feierabend · 27/08/2009 13:10

Auld I don't know... she fed at 10, 1.30 and 4.15 (and 6am) which doesn't look too bad on paper, but in between she shuffled and stirred a lot, and rolled over, so maybe she's practising that? I am a bit annoyed with her actually because she's had 3 feeds since getting up and all of them were quite short, she's not that interested in milk during the day. Wondering if there's some reverse cycling going on. I say a thread on that so will go to have a look.

In a way it's sweet that your DS1 is so protective of Alex, please don't listen to him though, the most important thing is that Alex is happy with the CM and you'll know that soon.
