Soooooo, weaning, well. I have been much persuaded by WhatFreshHell Gill Rapley and blw. Mainly it makes the whole business sound like quite a lot of fun. Also lots of sensible stuff about the baby controlling what goes into their mouth, not you etc, not worrying about how much they're getting/ until they're one it's just for fun and so on. Am reading the book and it all just seems very logical and common-sensical. In terms of time, I want to leave it as late as poss. With the weight issues, I don't want to use up valuable tummy volume with low-cal carrot mush which could be filled instead with high-cal bm!

Puzzle - sorry about the thingies (can't remember MN codeword. If it helps (and it may not), the universe has punished me for distressing you by secreting an enormous bobowler moth on my foot stool. Have just noticed it, but it must have been there all morning, right next to my feet, and the thought of that makes me feel quite, quite sick.

Auld - glad that (broken window notwithstanding) your weekend turned out okay. Poor friends' dd - hope she is okay now. Did the seizure happen while her parents were at the concert?

Surprise - H still in with us (literally) and will also probably be there until 7-8 months. It just makes bfing so much easier for me.

Next babies? I'm thinking of H being at least 3 or 4 before we have a second.

Guimauve · 24/08/2009 12:32

I wouldn't put the jabs off for too long. The point of having the same vacc three times consecutively is because it builds up the immunity profile, each one boosting to a higher level. If they are delayed, the immunity profile might not be the same. Used to have a copy of the Green Book, big guide to vaccinations, but recycled it thinking I'd never use it. As for the 5-in-1 (though in UK schedule they actually get 6 vaccs at a time) - even little premmies get that over here.

bebemoo · 24/08/2009 12:33

What about age (of yourselves) and the next baby? after 35 (I'm 31 -tho I DO NOT feel 31 and I often forget that I'm not 25 or maybe 27) there's a lot more things that can go wrong with you and the baby... does waiting make you nervous?

Guimauve · 24/08/2009 12:41

I do worry about it a bit, but not hugely. So I'm 29 now, maybe a second at 33, and possibly a third at 37? That's not particularly late, I don't think. Ideally I'd like them closer together, but I just don't think we could do that financially.

mrsgboring · 24/08/2009 12:45

Hello all

Am feeling moderately chipper - Edmund has put on 200g in 10 days. We've got a way to go before we're on the chart again, but it's improving and the HV is being very supportive.

I've had a little poke at Pubmed, and can't find anything there about BLW - anyone got any links to research? FWIW I really do quite like purees and they have now helped both my boys with their/my inexplicable to put weight on properly with breastmilk. My pubmed safari hasn't come up with any concrete evidence of harm for early weaning either (and by early they generally mean pre-17 weeks. Phew since we actually started at 16+6 in the end out of sheer depression)

Surprise it must be very hard can fully sympathise with the worry induced by having a permanently latched on infant when you have other things to do!

Bebemoo For me I chose to have a 3+ year gap because I have such horrendous pregnancies that I can't give my best to another child during them. I felt that my DS1 wasn't able to cope with a bit of neglect much before the age of 2.5 IYSWIM - he was a very demanding child and in some ways still is. I think though that this has totally knackered my chance of having another baby though

Gui a plea for a bit of free advice? (Probably not quite your field I'm guessing) I have a verucca for the last four years because all the treatments say you can't do them while pg or breastfeeding. How much harm can an off the shelf Scholl verucca freezing kit really do a breastfeeding mother? I mean, really, can I just risk it?

mrsgboring · 24/08/2009 12:46

Arghgh x-posted with everyone. Sorry! - that's what happens when you're multiply interrupted. Being a crap mother today too

kazkiss · 24/08/2009 12:52

Hiya everyone! Hope all is well in the land of the fanjo ! (just realised that sounded incredibly personal!)

Just to throw another question in the mix. DO you think i am utterly mad to consider BLW with one baby and old fashioned weaning with t'other!

I shall explain.......

I started both babies with pureed food a week ago and Ollie took to it like a duck to water and can polish off a considerable amount whilst still looking for more. whereas Izzie just spits her tongue out in disgust! Yet I gave her a spoon to hold the other day and she loves that. And she is much more dextrous. So i think she would be better with BLW. Yet I think Ollie loves the mush at the mo. Do you think i am just gonna end up making thinks harder. So what do i do? Carry on with the puree with ollie knowing he is doing really well with it. Or do i switch him to BLW or do i keep perservering with puree with izzie. GOsh the dilemmas with twins.

So now i have no idea whatsoever..... [confused face].

bebemoo · 24/08/2009 12:54

wow great weight gain mrsg! good job.

surprisenumber3 · 24/08/2009 12:59

TBH I think I would have had them close together if age had been an issue. I had mine at 23 (just), 27 and 32. My friend had hers at 32, 34 and 35!!

E had no voice yesterday and a slight temp, just 37.3 but her is usually 36. Would you cancel injs for wed? Or wait and see?

surprisenumber3 · 24/08/2009 13:01

Mrsg - fantastic on the weight gain!

bebemoo · 24/08/2009 13:07

surprise I might wait and see. How's the voice today? When Moo was sick she was 37.8 and 38.2 and she was horrible cranky so I really didn't want to chance it as the last time they made her feverish and obviously achey because she hated being moved.

surprisenumber3 · 24/08/2009 13:10

I'm not sure how her voice is today because she hasn't cried yet. And her giggle is quite high pitched anyway! Yesterday when she cried it sounded scratchy and muted, was really sad, nearly made me cry!

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 24/08/2009 13:18

Hi kazkiss! Nice to hear from you

On the weaning front - why not do a bit of both with both twins? Don't think you have to do pure BLW or pure purees, iyswim. You could give them both some puree and some finger foods (steamed carrot sticks, steamed broccoli florets, things like that) and let Izzie feed herself but help Ollie more? DS1 used to make a lovely mess with fruit puree and a spoon!

That way you're being led by what they want, which is really what BLW is about in the end, I think. And when Ollie's ready, he'll get stuck into the finger foods more and you can phase out the purees altogether?

mrsgboring - hooray for good weight gain! Gill Rapley's paper on BLW is here - also useful is Aitch's blog at www.babyledweaning.com.

Orbit was fine after his jabs, can't remember who was asking, but he hasn't had a problem with any of them. DS1 always ran a little fever after each set, but one dose of Calpol used to sort him out fine.

I hadn't thought that if Orbit eats a balloon his voice will get even higher. My god, he'd shatter windows!

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 24/08/2009 13:20

Oh and on the age thing - I'm 35, so if we go for DC3 I'd want to get moving on it before I hit 40. Ideally about 38 maybe? DP still not sure we should have a third....

surprisenumber3 · 24/08/2009 13:26

it was me asking WFH - thanks E has been fine after her other two lots.

Oh, and third babies fit in beautifully (as long as they are not latched on for 13 of the 14 hours they are awake each day!!

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 24/08/2009 13:46

Orbit is in his doorway bouncer while we listen to some Johnny Cash - nothing like The Man in Black on a rainy Monday!

bebemoo · 24/08/2009 13:49
Smile
bebemoo · 24/08/2009 13:57

i picked up a spoon which i used to feed moo with last night and she stopped squawking and opened her mouth up really wide... somehow i think i'm going to be spoon feeding her milk tonight...

mrsgboring · 24/08/2009 13:59

Thanks for the info WFH Auld terrifying about the skylight and the fit. I hope you're not taking on Boff's mantle of being the person that everything happens to.

Re age of motherhood, I'm now 33. I had DD at 28 and DS1 at 29 (just!) I could just about squeeze another one in but I'd be 36 and not wanting to push it much later for the sake of my health as much as anything else. I have to tell you Bebemoo that although I've never felt my increasing age outside pregnancy, I did feel older and more knackered in my pg last time round (though that was weird because my pregnancy with DD was more generally ghastly). You may have a totally different experience of course.

As some of you may remember I was obsessed with having another baby just after E was born, but that is fading now quite a bit and DH is still adamant that we're done. I really wish I could make the decision to stop now and look forward to adventures with a growing family of boys, and getting rid of the the mounds of baby stuff cluttering up the place. Though I also wish I could have three living children.

I think I am going to Ebay my breastpump as I hate the bloody thing with a passion.

Right that's enough waffle from me. I ought to stop skiving and go and watch Bob the fecking Builder with poorly DS1.

bebemoo · 24/08/2009 14:08

I hand expressed this morning...I like it much more than the pumps....my nipples don't get hurt.

has anyone found that one breast seems harder than the other? my left always seems bigger and harder no matter what.

BoffinMum · 24/08/2009 14:39

Hello people, back from holiday, which was very nice, lots of sun, happy children, etc etc.

However bad news on our return. Nanny has just phoned to say she has found a better job and won't be coming on 1 September. This is despite signing an employment contract.

FFS!

Normal Boffin service will be resumed shortly after I have finished punching a hole in the kitchen wall.

BoffinMum · 24/08/2009 14:45

Re weaning - I always have given mine baby rice and breast milk to start them off, around 4-5 months, when they started to wake up in the night again after sleeping through for a while. I am not sure how much help that is though. Another clue for me in judging when to start has been their obvious interest in food developmentally.

Swaliswan · 24/08/2009 14:53

Afternoon All!

Finally I'm back from holiday and DH has got me a netbook so my smelly old computer that died can go in the bin and my MN time can resume!

Off to catch up but wondered if anyone has any thoughts to add to my potty training thread?

B52s · 24/08/2009 14:54

I'm going with BLW at 6 months with Sam. DS1 had purees from 6 months, so am keen to try something different.

Another cardio appt in October, just to check still all okay.

mathshoneybunny27 · 24/08/2009 15:22

Boff I am with you on the weaning. Lovely to hear all the different methods people are trying though - such an exciting time

I love that they have foods that they like and dislike, little personalities, faial expressions and definitie preferences about life...when a mere 5 months ago they were swilling around in our tummies still!
