Schulte?
Boff?

AuldAlliance · 22/08/2009 13:53

wer bist du, Feierabend?

What a polyglot group.

Feierabend · 22/08/2009 20:18

Schulte of course... I mean has anyone seen Boff lately?

Feierabend really is my favourite time of day - put H in cot, shut both bedroom doors, get the alcohol free beer out of the fridge

I made some puree for Hazel today - apple and raspberry because we'd been to the PYO. It's in the freezer waiting to be eaten! The poor thing looked quite excited earlier when I took her on my lap during dinner but then she realised all she was going to get was the boob.

Off to bed now - must not waste this opportunity!

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 22/08/2009 20:58

I had to look up what it meant, but now I know I like it a lot!

Orbit is learning to sit up - he has the strength and the muscles all sorted out, just a bit lacking in balance. I propped him up earlier with some cushions and went to make a cup of tea, came back to find he'd pitched forward and landed face down in the carpet Poor lamb.

Poor DS1 had his pre school boosters yesterday and was feeling a bit rubbish today - he spent about three hours asleep which is completely unusual.

Guimauve · 23/08/2009 07:47

Diary of an insomniac arachnophobe:

0430: Feeding baby. Notice spider on bedroom ceiling. Spider is small and far away, so I am unconcerned. Amuse self by watching it. Ceiling is classic 70s lumpy-bumpy finish, and spider keeps falling off and having to climb back up.
0435: Spider makes a dive for Earth, heading for the bed. I blow at it to discourage it, waking DH in the process. "A spider was going to land on you". "Oh, thanks". DH goes back to sleep. Spider continues across ceiling in my direction.
0440: Spider making continued dives for Earth, getting closer and closer to LO and I. Continue to discourage him by blowing at him. Spider disappears behind curtains towards window. I think I am safe.
0445: Spider appears again from behind curtain. He is discouraged by me and disappears again.
0450: Spider watch continues.
0455: Spider reappears closer to DH's side, and makes another dive, but stops to hang a little way from the ceiling. Cannot reach him by blowing. Gather up LO's blanket and wave it in direction of spider to try to create a breeze. This is ineffective.
0500: Briefly ponder gathering blanket into a ball to throw at spider and take him down completely. Suspect my aim, especially from my current position, is not adequate, and if anything this procedure will only result in blanket, spider, and all landing on DH and waking him up.
0505: Spider is lurking a couple of inches from the ceiling. He is still. I wonder if he is asleep. I wonder if it would be unwise to wake DH and ask him to get rid of spider.
0510: Spider starts flying across room diagonally. He obviously has some form of web up there. Perhaps he can be trusted to remain in his web. He lands on the lampshade and creeps around it to my side. He is now relatively close, and the fear is kicking in.
0515: Spider makes another diagonal move, getting lower, and hangs in the middle of the room. I wake DH and ask him to rid me of the terrible beast, as I'll never get back to sleep otherwise. DH removes spider using a glass and a National Geographic. DH returns to bed and turns off light so that any further spider incursions cannot be seen.
0520: I wonder if the itchy feeling on my head is a spider.
0525: Spend some time trying to work out whether today is Sunday or Monday.
0530: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
0535: Dawn chorus starts.......

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 23/08/2009 07:54

Morning Guimauve! A good night then?

Just out of interest, what was keeping the baby warm when you were using his blanket as a spider deterrent?

Guimauve · 23/08/2009 07:56

Ach, he was plenty warm. He just kicks the blanket off anyway Room was nearly 25C, so the blanket is really only there because I feel bad having him lying there in no'but a vest!

Feierabend · 23/08/2009 08:16

Good morning Feeling very generous today as I am letting DH have a lie-in. Of course he thinks he deserves it! Earlier he asked me if H had slept through - he hadn't even noticed the two night feeds

Gui at spider watch. DH found one as big as a dinner plate in DD1's room this week. Eek.

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 23/08/2009 10:28

glad to hear H was warm enough despite your spider antics! I shan't tell you the statistic I heard about how many spiders we swallow in our sleep every year......[evil grin]

I woke up to discover that we had violated practically every rule of baby sleeping:

  • baby in cot with loose blankets (both sleeping bags in wash due to wee/vomit incidents) - check
  • baby not feet to foot - check
  • baby in bed with us later on - check
  • baby lying right next to me in bed and me falling asleep exhausted - check
  • baby sliding under duvet in the night - check

Baby fine and hale and hearty in the morning? CHECK - thankfully!

Put Orbit in his baby bouncer this morning for the first time and he loved it! (DP only just got it down from the loft)

Our bouncer is a vintage one that came from my sister - it has a date on it of October 1991, but I don't know if that's the date it was made or its Use By date Still seems to work fine, all the webbing and stitching looks strong and the spring squeaks but isn't corroded, so I figure it's ok. I can't find a brand on it anwywhere though, and my sister lost the instructions, so it's a mystery bouncer.

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 23/08/2009 10:29

Auld - dinner plate size spiders? EEEEEEEEKKK!!!!

We decided to see if we could get out to our friends in Provence for a few days last night, only to find that of course all the flights around bank holiday are full, and DP can't really do any other dates.

Guimauve · 23/08/2009 10:37

See, I don't get feet to foot. H only ever shoves himself upwards, I've never seen him wiggle in a footwards direction.

WFH - what about ferry/ chunnel and a long drive? I suppose it depends how long you were planning to go for as to whether it's worth the drive. Or TGV?

Feierabend · 23/08/2009 11:29

The Eurostair to Aix is great, we did it a few years ago.

Feierabend · 23/08/2009 13:47

I feel like killing DH

Hazel was really tired after our lunch and I knew she needed at least an hour's sleep so once she had dropped off, I took DD1 upstairs so she wouldn't wake her up. And then of course DH goes stomping around the cot and he woke H up after only half an hour. She's now screaming because she really really needs the sleep but can't go back to sleep. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Feierabend · 23/08/2009 14:08

She's still crying...

Guimauve · 23/08/2009 14:47

Oh Feier, sounds like your DH needs to be muffled permanently. Ihope you gave him A Look.

Though that makes it sound like I think he needs to be assassinated (which you may agree with at the moment). I was actually thinking more along the lines of being forced to wear fluffy slippers and a pair of oven gloves at all times.

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 23/08/2009 15:01

Looked at trains - £500 one way, and no trains on the way back that match our timings

Problem is DPs work makes life very inflexible, as he has meetings for which he has to be back.

Think we're going to take a long weekend in England instead.

Auld I hope you have administered a suitable punishment to DH. He sounds like he is being a clod.

Guimauve · 23/08/2009 15:14

Feierabend is Schulte, WFH!

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 23/08/2009 17:06

oooops nappy brain! I knew who I meant, my fingers just disagreed with me

Auld's DH, you're off the hook

bebemoo · 23/08/2009 17:25

evening everyone
Moo slept 7 hours on Friday night and 9 hours last night! be2 (me) has been doing a happy dance. Paired with that, be1 and be2 have had some lovely mommy and daddy time together because Moo has slept so well and so I'm finding that I'm a lot less stressed than I was before.

Nothing like a little rescreational activities to ease tension.

Moo's tooth is 'just' poking which has explained the feeling/tenderness I've had with the feedings again.

Feier I dare say you Dh needs to learn a lesson...

Where are the rat pack? Boff BB Springy and Nutty are well missed aren't they?

Feierabend · 23/08/2009 19:55

Wow Bebe, well done Moo for sleeping. Do you think it's the rice?

I was too tired to do the dream feed last night so just left her, but she woke up at midnight which for some reason feels like the worst time to do a feed and then again at 4am. That was pretty good in theory because it meant two longish stretches of sleep but I hate doing a feed before 2am so we're back to dream feeds again tonight. Am I making sense?

So I now need the Monday to recover from the weekend! DH painted our windows today so I had both of the girls to look after, plus H had a difficult couple of hours when she woke too early from her lunchtime nap. Roll on Monday morning...

bebemoo · 23/08/2009 20:37

Not sure that it's actually the rice as we used to have 8 or 9 hours before... it could have been the tooth which had been causing us some trouble... or it could be a combination of wanting more food, the tooth, the disruption of guests and holiday, and the stress of mommy.. dunno really.

If we sleep well tonight I may cut the rice out again and just see what happens...after all it's just me that really is truly disturbed by it all.

Feierabend · 23/08/2009 20:44

Well let us know how it goes! DH is now convinced Hazel needs proper food, but I am going to wait until she's 5 months old at least.

Guimauve · 23/08/2009 20:50

What do these DHs base their weaning theories on, though? Careful reading of the literature? Paternal instinct? Hearsay? It makes me feel a bit

Feierabend · 23/08/2009 21:05

Paternal instinct. TBH I myself have been saying to him for weeks that H is a very hungry baby and I want to wean her before 6 months, and that she probably won't sleep through until she's on solids. She now weighs what DD1 did at 7 months old. How is she supposed to sustain this on just milk? I know the theory is that how much milk your baby needs is not related to how big they are but it doesn't sound logical to me.

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 23/08/2009 21:25

But Feier milk has more calories than any weaning food, so if you have a hungry baby, the best thing you can give them is more milk. Which is hard on us, sadly.

The other thing to watch out for is the 4 month growth spurt - babies tend to get quite unsettled around 4 months and start waking up more and demanding more milk, but it doesn't mean they need solids, and if you ride it out they settle down again, IMVHO. DS1 certainly did, and Orbit is now nearly 5 months and is definitely settling down from his mad feeding period.

Personally (and you all know this is a favourite topic for me ) I can't see how a baby can possibly be deemed ready for solids, from an evolutionary perspective, while it can't sit up independently or grab food, or most importantly, while its reflex is to spit them out. Until they've lost their tongue thrust reflex, then surely solids can't be needed? Otherwise, surely their instinct would be to swallow, not spit?

Anyway, to each their own weaning date, but that's my two cents.
