wg brilliant news, well done. Glad LLL were helpful. Wish they would have some advice for DD who is even worse than last night so far. Sob. Wailing at full volume and only thing that will soothe her is Metallica on the hifi, which has worked since birth where nothing else will.... I have created a monster.

Please please someone tell me the myth/story about getting two bad nights w teething is true??

KiwiPanda · 16/08/2009 11:26

Another apalling night. Think we managed about 3 hours sleep, DD still inconsolable today and won't be put down for even a second. Was obviously exhausted but howled when we put her down, DH managed to finally get her to sleep just now by rocking her in his arms.

jumpjockey · 16/08/2009 12:48

KP have you tried www.cry-sis.org.uk/ unfortunately their helpline is shut overnight (I guess volunteers run it so fair enough really) but they may be able to offer some advice or a listening ear when you and DH are exhausted by it all.

daisydora · 16/08/2009 13:22

KP Sorry to hear that you had another shocker of a night. Its tough, unfortunately no advice but huge amount of sympathy. I hope between you and DH you can try and catch some sleep today.

DS still very unwell. Had temp of 38.9 last night so Calpol and bed. He woke screaming in the night was so hot I thought he would start fitting. So more Calpol, stripped off and a cool flannel on his head. He settled eventually in our bed. Totally of his food so far today. He has just woke from a record 2.5 hour nap (unheard of!). Have given more calpol but his temp is 39.4 Am going to take it again in half an hour and see if the calpol has started to work. I'm not convinced its his chest infection that is causing the temp though. He wasn't this ill when we went to the Dr's on Friday.

daisydora · 16/08/2009 14:14

Have just spoken to emergency Dr as DS temp only dropped to 38.7! He said to rotate paracetemol & IB every 3 hours, leave him in nappy, damp towels on radiators to try and ease his cough, fan on and try not to cuddle too much as my body heat will make his rise, oh and water every hour even if its just a few sips. If he becomes lethargic or unresponsive obv to call them back. If that happens I'd be more inclined to go to A&E but we'll see. I hate him being poorly and DH is at work till 6pm.

Well, he's trying to eat DD's feet now, so maybe hes not that ill or maybe thats whats making him ill!

waitinggirl · 16/08/2009 15:36

oh, KP and Daisy - how difficult for both of you - thinking of you and hope things get better.

can i ask a question from the mn gurus? my best friend lives in new york, she has a son who is coming up to one year old and they are over in a week or so. i have been asked to be an honorary godmother (he was christened in a full catholic service in mexico - she didn't expect me to fly to mexico for it). what can i give him? bearing in mind i am not catholic, nor particularly religious, i would like to give something useful/poignant/not a traditional silver spoon or whatever you're supposed to buy. his name is felix, in case that is of any help. i gave my other goddaughter a little olive tree which would grow with her, but i can't give him one of those, they don't have a garden. any ideas?

KiwiPanda · 16/08/2009 16:18

Thanks all - daisydora your poor little mite sounds very poorly. When DD had tonsilitis a few months ago she took a random 3 1/2 hour nap in the middle of the day which freaked me out as at the time 30 minutes was pretty much her max, but I think the temp feeling unwell knocks them out and sleep is probably the best cure. Interesting what you say about doctor recommended rotating Ibuprofen and paracet, friend just suggested that to me too. Wonder why it works better than just sticking with one? Am going to give it a try myself. I'm worried DD is turning into a little junkie though, when I give her calprofen she sucks the syringe thing and gets annoyed when it's gone.. and as for the teething powders, I'm expecting her to start lining it up and snorting it before the week's out...

Am praying for a better night...

EffiePerine · 17/08/2009 08:48

WG: glad things are improving for you, sounds like you had a shocking few days . Re pressies, I tend to go for books, maybe a really nice illustrated set of fairy tales? Or too heavy for the plane?

Daisy: is DS any better? I'd be straight down A&E at any turn for the worse as well.

Kiwi: teeth through yet?

Trace: sounds like a lovely holiday

Both DSs shouting and DH muttering so a quick one from me! We survived our weekend with my parents despite a few tricky patches, DS1 loved having them but we were all exhausted by the end. Both DSs and I went to bed after they left yesterday afternoon and slept for several hours!

JollyBear · 17/08/2009 09:42

Hello everyone,

WG Has madam any teeth? It must hurt to suck when you have a sore mouth, and perhaps madam was hungry but it hurt to feed?? DD did something very similar but with her bottle (which I know is different to BF, but it is the same principle) and I presume it was teeth trouble. She only did it about 5 times but it was miserable. Being hungry and then it hurting to feed must be on of the worst things for a baby.

ladyT I'd say that having different nurseries would be too confusing. Although I suppose it depends on the nursery. Is the better one likely to have any places coming up in the near future? Have you toured them yet? The one I really liked from the brochure wasn't as good in the flesh!

PD Land of the blue and whites eh? I know it well . My home town is very close, and where I live now is just down the motorway. I'd be up for a mini meet up, daisy would you be free? How is DS today? Hope he has started to improve.

Oh I just remembered, it is DDs first settling in visit at nursery on Wednesday morning so depends if you are both free in the afternoon PD and daisy.

tilly I'd be up for a York meet I should think, if you don't mind I think a thread would be a good idea.

Right must go, glad all those who have been away on hols have retuned safely to the fold!

TheInvisibleHand · 17/08/2009 09:55

Just a quick one for WG and Kiwi and then I have to work. DS did exactly that kind of thing a few weeks ago - he literally went 2 days without feeding (not much bottle either). We worked out that he would be more likely to eat if we gave him calpol, so I reckon it was teething pain (teeth followed, but much later). It is very scary and upsetting though. Hope all is better.

KiwiPanda · 17/08/2009 11:23

Hey all. A slightly better night last night - she still woke 4 times but they were more grumbly "why aren't I asleep" cries than full on pain-induced wailing, and she seems a bit more cheerful today.

Absolutely no sign of any teeth though! I can't even see white bumps. Mind you she won't let me get a good look... Invisible how long after that did the teeth appear?? And was there more trauma when they did??

jumpjockey · 17/08/2009 11:57

Morning all, KP glad you had a better night. There must be something in the water at the moment, dd was up crying 3 times before midnight then up for good at 5 [yawn]

Daisy - The ibuprofen/paracetamol alternating thing goes for adults too, they work on different symptoms so you can have both at the same time. But it's worth keeping a note of which one you had/gave when to avoid confusion.

JB hope the nursery day goes well, I'm sure it's more traumatic for us than for them!

Right. Boring morning of phoning electricians coming up. We need some plug sockets adding and it's one of those jobs we probably could do, but given that it's got electricity involved I'd much rather get a pro in. And every time I think "must phone an electrician" dd wakes up [sigh] but she's currently out with Pachelbel's canon on repeat on the cd player (well it seems to work...!) so catch upw ith you later lovelies

KiwiPanda · 17/08/2009 12:00

jumpjockey your DD is clearly FAR more cultured than mine.. I've tried a full array of composers from Bach to Birtwhistle, but no, she just wants Metallica...

jumpjockey · 17/08/2009 12:04

oh and KP - metallica?!

KiwiPanda · 17/08/2009 12:08

I know, I know.. it's embarassing. I come from a long line of musicians and musical experts and lovers of classical and jazz.. and what do I get? A metal-obsessed baby

She's been like that since birth - in fact in the womb she used to get excited by Metallica..! - and funnily enough DH knows someone who knows their PR, who told them about it.. apparently they were charmed, bless em!

daisydora · 17/08/2009 12:42

Hello all,

Well had a shocker of an evening/night with DS he was waking constantly crying temp high but not toobad. Anyway we rode it out and he settled about 3ish (I think) But when he woke at 8am his temp was 39.6 again, so gave him some calpol and off we went to the Dr's. Turns out he has tonsilitus and an ear infection to boot . No wonder he hasn't eaten anything yesterday morning. Dr said to continue with AB's, Paracetemol & IB and if he is no better in 48 hours to go back and they might admit him to see if he has some other sort of infection. But as he has been coughing etc now for almost 3 weeks he did say the likelyhood of SF was very small.

PD and JB would love a mini meet (or any kind of meet tbh) but alas am not free Weds pm. My BF has just rung in tears as she is having some marital trouble and is thinking of leaving her most definately not D H. Needless to say my shoulder is being lent on Wednesday.

Right best go wrap DD's presents as she is 3 tomorrow. I just hope DS is better in the morning. My MIL is supposed to be having him whilst we take DD to the cinema for the first time!

TheInvisibleHand · 17/08/2009 13:41

Kiwipanda - it was weeks before teeth arrived. And when they did, it was without any further agony

Veggiemummy · 17/08/2009 14:19

Cooeeeeee just popping in to say hello, am back from the netherlands, want to have a little skim over what ive missed but have loads of unpacking to do and also its DS1's b'day today so want to spend some him and DH has to go to Swindon for 2 days tomorrow so we are drawing out the family time holiday feeling a little longer, but lots to tell, missed you guys.

sybilfaulty · 17/08/2009 15:44

Hola schmola guapas! Wish I was waving at you all from Spain but alas I am in S London and likely to remain here for some time....

HAd a quick skim. Huge sympathies to those with poorly and non sleeping babes, esp Daisy and KP. Hope the drugs kick in soon, Daisy, last thing you need when your DD is 3. So sorry to have missed the meet as well. I had another child care crisis which has now been splendidly (if expensively) resolved and I am now in childcare nirvana. I have evryone sorted and (whispers) no children at all (and no job) on Wed am!!!!!! Free time!! Yippee! I am slightly at leaving my young fellow in a nursery for 2 days a week, but my mother thinks the extra day when I am not at work will do me good. Only really a morning as DD1 is at large in the pm til she goes to school.

Talking of which, she has just appeared. Back later.

EffiePerine · 17/08/2009 15:56

Daisy: I am in awe at your coping skills, weeks with an ill baby, a birthday to organise and you're helping out your friends as well. I hope the drugs kick in quickly and you get some rest soon.

DS1 has gone down for a nap, I have a v cute pic of DS1 and 2 dozing together which I will put up on my profile if I can manage it. News here is that DS2 is getting up on his hands and knees (or hands and feet) and trying to crawl. He's only going backwards as yet which is very frustrating for him and us. Still, he's been a lot happier since he can move a little, so I think that was what was causing the grumpiness. Now I just need to find a way to fix DS1's whinginess and we'll be there .

Kayzr · 17/08/2009 16:04

Just a really quick message. Dh has man flu!

Daisy, Hope DS gets better soon.

I hope all the babies get better soon and start sleeping. We had another night from hell last night. He wouldn't go to sleep and then he woke at half 3. He woke DS1 up who then wouldn't go to sleep either.

Hope you are all ok!

EffiePerine · 17/08/2009 16:16

Photo uploaded!

JollyBear · 17/08/2009 16:36

kiwi I know your question was to invisible but I'll put my twopeneth in (is that even the correct term?!), DD's teeth appeared about 2 weeks after she first had feeding trouble and it happened about twice afterwards with the top two teeth. Fingers crossed that was that, the rest came no trouble.

I went to the dentist last week though and the dentist thinks DDs back teeth are coming , joy of joys.

effie That photo is just lovely .

daisy Wow, you are a super busy lady! Glad things are easing slightly. PD Let us know if you can manage a different day.

DD is having a nap which is very odd as she has already had one whilst out and about this afternoon. She has a runny nose though and I suppose she wants more sleep. Oh well, best make the most of it and put the tea on.

Big wave to veggie.

Toodles all.

Veggiemummy · 17/08/2009 16:36

oh effie so cute.

poisondwarf · 17/08/2009 17:36

dd/JB can't do any other day I'm afraid. In fact it was a bit naughty of me to say I could do Wednesday in the first place. It was the only day I hadn't actually arranged something but that meant it was the only day I had to do all the things I need to do but haven't actually arranged IYSWIM. Anyway, will be back up there in a few weeks (round about the 17th-20th September ish) - maybe we could arrange something for then if you fancied it? Hope DS is better soon daisy - poor little thing.

Kiwi just to confuse you, DS had something similar at about 6 or 7 months and everyone told me it was teething. 8 months later his first tooth appeared. Having said that, when teeth did finally appear they were generally accompanied by a dodgy bum and no red cheeks. DD is having something similar right now - has had diarrhea for a few days, was sick yesterday and refused a feed. I'm pretty sure it's just a tummy bug in her case. It has crossed my mind that something might have done the rounds at the meet-up.

arti can't believe your MIL hates DD2's name! What an affront to good taste...

Effie aaah. So cute.

Welcome back Veggie - hope you had a great holiday.

Thanks for the advice on the photo files everyone. Unfortunately though it looks like they're not recoverable, but I will keep them to one side just in case I ever come across someone who's an expert in the matter.

Gave DD some fresh pineapple yesterday. She was chowing down on it enthusiastically until she let out a scream and a bit of it came out with blood on it. Poor mite - it must have been so acidic it took away the skin from the inside of her mouth. Think I'll be waiting a while before trying that one again.

Well, I'm having a bit of an identity crisis here. I have thought I'm 4 foot 10 for many a year, since I was measured at the GP's (I made the nurse measure me twice I was so shocked). Anyway, went to register at the new GP's the other day and the nurse pronounced that I am 5 foot 1 and a half! I mean, can I really have grown 3.5 inches??? Does this mean that I can no longer use my username for fear of being done under the Trade Descriptions Act? On the plus side, this means that I am no longer in the overweight category on the BMI scale. Hurray! Pass the biscuits!
