Rolf, after my grandad died one of my uncle's bought grandma's house to free up her capital and she lived there rent free. She wouldn't let him do any repairs to it though and it started to get really run down. She also wasn't looking after herself, not eating properly or anything and eventually she got really ill and had to have the doctor in. When he saw the state she was living in he called social services and they got together with my uncle. She had to go into hospital for a short while and he skipped all the stuff and sold the house while she was there, then she went into a warden controlled flat. She hated him for it and never forgave him. Although it almost certainly extended her life by quite some margin.

It was a horrible mess, both physically and emotionally. It doesn't really help you either, but I would urge you to do something before it gets worse - and make sure that it just the house that is being neglected and not a symptom of his overall lifestyle.

spongebrainmaternitypants · 13/07/2009 22:25

Thanks for all your kind words everyone - I was v touched by all the lovely things you said about my gorgeous boy . I've had a lovely day today with three of my favourite mum friends and babies so feeling a little brighter - although could have done without this story on the news this morning. Although I did point out to dh that Alex and Bill can blame any weight problems on him not me now!

whinegums, I did bite my tongue I'm afraid . Think I was too stunned to respond and couldn't think of a suitably witty retort - was trying to stop myself from crying tbh . Her dh has just posted on my status that Alex was probably "tired from carrying all that weight around", so if this is going to become an ongoing thing I will have to say something - just don't find it funny at all. Have deleted his comment from my page as don't want anyone else to read it - don't know whether he'll notice and take the hint .

neenz, your photos of Italy are fab - you both looked very relaxed and well.

Rolf, so sorry to hear about your dad's house - that's so tough for you. Parents can be so proud when it comes to asking for help can't they? Hope he is on the mend.

sybil, that must have been so hard on your uncle .

viva, hope you didn't get called out too often last night.

ktpie, try not to be too hard on yourself re: the lethargy. I found the first three or four months absolutely killing, but it has improved a bit. Being pg with a young child is hard work, take your naps where you can and do as little as possible - it won't be forever. As for the double buggy, I think we're probably going to go for a cheaper-end side by side now but we need to do some more research. I'll keep you posted!

Amber, good to hear Luke is on the mend - very scary for you .

Hi to everyone else x

DebInAustria · 13/07/2009 22:26

Just a quick post to say that I know why my little boy has bitten a chunk out of his cot - he has 2 more teeth coming through, which will make a grand total of 10 teeth!

spongebrainmaternitypants · 13/07/2009 22:27

x-posted Deb - 10 teeth, wow!

Rolf · 13/07/2009 22:35

Sybil thanks so much for your post. How sad about your grandma and uncle. Dad's back home now, and I popped round to see him earlier and he did the usual thing of closing the porch door and standing in the doorway talking to me, so I gather that we're supposed to pretend that I haven't seen the inside of the house . Apparently my brother was there for a while this afternoon, so I'll talk to him about it.

We've just had an injury upstairs. The boys have taken my pilates ball and were rolling themselves on it across the room at top speed, and splatting into a beanbag. They were having a great time doing it, when they added the extra thrill of a brother lying down in front of the beanbag (in the manner of a silent movie damsel tied to the railway track). Well, the inevitable happened (knee in the eye) and it all ended in tears.

pleasechange · 14/07/2009 08:48

Hi neenz glad you had a good break - and good luck for going back to work tomorrow. It was mellymel that was coming back up north, I'm already here!

rolf - ouch re the bumps. Do you find yourself sounding like your parents and saying 'it'll end in tears'?

kpie sympathies re the ms - I had it and it really sucks. Hope it doesn't last much longer

debs 10 teeth! Every time A is in a bad mood I find myself feeling in his mouth for some more, but haven't had any new ones for months.

A has an injection today - not looking forward to it! (me that is, obviously, not him!)

Essie3 · 14/07/2009 11:27

Hello, not been here for a while! Just busy really. Came back from London to Wales and I have loads to do, and then we're off on a short holiday next week (some of it in London). It's bizarre, 1 week on 1 week off at the moment!

Deb 10 teeth sounds amazing - is that the most on this thread? I reckon Iestyn has the lowest number here, with only 2 teeth! He chews like an old man, it's hilarious. Go on, cough up - how many teeth do your children have?

Rolf hope your DS is ok! Black eye?

Amber how is Luke by now?
Iestyn is still fine, so it looks like he won't have swine flu. This is despite him playing with Luke, sharing Luke's cup and (not) sleeping in Luke's pram. But one thing has come out of this - I'm shocked at the level of ignorance when it comes to swine flu. (I have a friend who is an epidemiologist and is currently specializing in swine flu.) It's not as contagious as a cold, and it can't be caught by looking at someone who has been exposed! You have to have symptoms. Poor old Iestyn was shunned like a plague victim, which is just mean.

Where is everyone? There's regulars missing - Neenz (welcome back!) is right - Systems hasn't been seen a while. Abdn? How's the chicken pox?

Essie3 · 14/07/2009 11:28

Rolf totally failed to say sorry about your Dad. My grandmother is living in a dirty hovel these days, but nothing can be done really. She's surprisingly healthy on it.

spongebrainmaternitypants · 14/07/2009 11:31

Hi Essie, good to hear from you.

Alex has six teeth - but one of our NCT babies (birthday 9th June) has SIXTEEN!

Glad Iestyn escaped the 'flu but sorry to hear he's been shunned . Don't think there is anything any of us can do to avoid it now - if we get it we get it.

Essie3 · 14/07/2009 12:07

Sixteen?! That's more than I have! Not actually true, but I have a very low number of teeth due to having lots taken out to make space; I have an amazingly small mouth (it's been proven and it's on record ) and my teeth could be insured for thousands, the amount of work that's been done on them...

With the flu, the media are going mad about it, but it's not as horrific as it's being made out to be. It's not really much worse than 'normal' flu, but the difference is that it's the summer so it sounds more scary, and it has a name (this is according to my friend the epidemiologist). And people die of 'normal' flu every year. But actually most people will have bad cold symptoms. Antibiotics can treat it. Personally, I want Iestyn to have perfect health and never even get a sniffle or a single sneeze. Not realistic, though...

spongebrainmaternitypants · 14/07/2009 12:58

I agree, Essie, the media are hyping this up to the max - thousands of people die of 'flu every year. I think the slightly worrying aspect of SF is that young adults seem to be affected worse than the elderly or chronically sick, but even then we're talking very small numbers. My 35 yr old brother had it last month and, while very poorly with it (bed ridden for a week and housebound for a further week) is now absolutely fine.

But it makes a good news story .

ktpie · 14/07/2009 13:30

Essie - Jonathan beats Iestyn on the lack of teeth competition, by having none! I have spoken to the doctor and the dentist about it and they don't start to panic until they get to 2 years old. He hasn't got genetics on his side with teeth as I am missing 4 incisors and DH is missing 4 molars so it would be nice to see at least one appear!

Thanks for the sympathy on the morning sickness, not feeling too bad today, well I haven't randomly chucked up anywhere so far so that is a start.

Neenz - am a bit jealous of your holiday with no kids, glad you had a good time.

Sponge - I never come up with the witty remarks at the right moments either, I'm shocked that the stupid man has now written something on fb as well. From your photos Alex isn't fat at all, normal baby sized, that couple sound horrible. I think something needs to be said to them, have you got a mutual friend who can have a word?
Thanks for the sympathy about the lethargy, some days are better than others, actually feeling fairly awake this afternoon, still not tempted to do any cleaning though!

Allnew - whereabouts are you up north?

This may be a daft question but for immunisations have you been reminded by the docs to book in or did you just ring up yourselves? Occured to me this morning that J should be having some 12 month injections about now. Also have you all had 12 month visits from the health visitor? Not sure if mine knows about our change of address as our doctors receptionists said they would pass on the message. Would be interested to see how much he weighs as I haven't had him weighed for ages and am too lazy to get off my bum and take him myself.

Will stop rambling now.

PiggyPenguin · 14/07/2009 13:30

Jamie has 6 teeth, but two are mini teeth and haven't got more than the points through really.

He is also a bit lacking in the hair department. I mean he does have some hair (and that is very curly and gorgeous obviously ) but its a bit thin and we have a bit of a comb-over effect going on. Does everyone else have a full head of hair?

Essie3 · 14/07/2009 13:54

LOL ktpie! You win the award! (It's a set of false teeth! )

Sybil Iestyn has masses of blond hair - quite shocking really because DH and I are dark. Iestyn is suspiciously Aryan.

Essie3 · 14/07/2009 13:55

Oh, interesting. F, Fhead. It edited!

Essie3 · 14/07/2009 13:56

[There were four * there, but it deleted them. No, I haven't got Tourettes! ]

whinegums · 14/07/2009 14:36

I'm supposed to be preparing a presentation for an interview later this week, but it's not keeping my attention...

Ha ha at sweary Essie!

Sponge, you should have left that twat's comment on FB and let US all rip into him. Bet he wouldn't have said anything to you after that.

Neenz, v jealous of your childfree trip.

The past few nights with B have been horrendous - CC appears to have worked for the first part of the evening, but the second part - after I go to bed - is a mess. We are in the same room (we have a 2 bedroom flat, but no space to move him into the other bedroom, which is full of stuff - we had hoped to have moved by now). He seems to think that once I'm there, he should be in bed with me. I gave in last night, but even when he was in bed, he wouldn't go back to sleep. I have even started feeding him again in the night to try and get more sleep. I haven't increased his feeds, he only has two now - one at bedtime, and then this moving one - it was first thing, but it's become 3am. Knackered I am. Any suggestions welcome. I do think I'm just going to have to go with whatever maximises sleep for all of us. He's in with us for the foreseeable - we can't move until I get a job, and - well, you all know that job hunting hasn't been very successful so far.

ktpie, we get automated letters to take B for immunisations - he had a jab yesterday.

B has eight teeth now - and a massive gap between his top two front ones! His hair has gone very blond, but he hasn't got much of it. It was a bit long and whispy, so I snipped at it a bit this morning, no way I could take him to the hairdresser for it. Better than what my DB did to my poor niece though - he reckoned she had a combover worthy of Bobby Charlton, so he SHAVED the poor mite's head when she was a few months old!!! Her mother was not best pleased as you might imagine....

This week is mad - loads to do before going away on Sunday, interview, etc. Sadly the mum of one of my friends died very suddenly at the weekend, so I need to go to a funeral as well.

On a more positive note, I am finally going to see Bruce Springsteen tonight - can't wait!

Oh, and meant to say, thanks for all the comments on the photos on FB - very nice.

Rolf · 14/07/2009 14:49

Thea has 8 teeth, also with gaps between the front ones. She has blonde hair and is getting that baby mullet thing round the nape of her neck and ears. I think it's adorable but I remember thinking the same thing with DS1, and being appalled seeing photos of him a few years later. A confederate flag, truck and shotgun were all he needed to complete the look .

No black eye for DS1, but it looks very red and sore, poor boy.

OK, I have to try it now, too...

fuck fucker fuckitty fuckhead

Rolf · 14/07/2009 14:50

oh I'm so so sorry. I thought Essie meant that mumsnet put in all the bleeps. Oh golly...

ktpie · 14/07/2009 15:12

I can't stop giggling now, Rolf you are so rude!

Thanks Essie for the award, we may well need them, although J thinks teeth are over rated anyhow, he can manage to munch his way through most things without any, lettuce is the only thing that he really can't manage.

What J lacks in teeth he makes up for in hair, he has curly blond hair, he's always had quite a bit, but then both me and DH have quite a bit of hair, unfortunately not much of it is on DH's head anymore.

Whinegums - can you do some rearrangement and get B into the other room? In our old house we moved J into the spare room and it was literally a cot in a sea of boxes, books etc, but as soon as he moved out of our room he stopped waking at night.

I had an energy spurt and did the washing up! Now recovering with a cup of tea and a biscuit and ignoring the washing that needs hanging out.

pleasechange · 14/07/2009 15:49

lol rolf - that was a bit of an outburst!

teeth - A has 8, no new ones for ages

ktpie I'm in Manchester. Re. the injections, we get notification of the appointments in the post. A has just had his 12 month booster today and will have the mmr next month

A has quite a lot of hair - but then I have masses of it and DH has a lot as well. DH keeps asking if we need to cut it - don't know if I'll be able to face having his lovely hair cut!

whinegums sympathies on the sleep issues. I remember you seemed to be one of the only ones apart from me having such issues. Coincidentally I've been pondering moving A into his own room recently. I really do think it will stop him waking - I think what happens is that he stirs, but then when he sees I'm in the room, it wakes him whereas if I wasn't there he may just resettle him. A just to wake really regularly (ever hour or 2) but then we did cranial osteopathy when he was around 10 months (recommended by neenz, thanks!) and it really helped (or coincidence based on his age, will never know). Maybe if you could try putting the cot elsewhere as a trial, albeit in the middle of boxes just to see if it helps?

Have fun at the concert!

bitofadramaqueen · 14/07/2009 18:23

essie my DH was practically platinum blonde as a child and has very dark hair now (in between the grey bits).

whinegums I had some friends who were in a similar situation and sorry to confirm it only resolved itself when the dc went in own room. Can you swap the cot for some boxes?

Sorry not to join in on other chat, only time for a quick post.

poppy34 · 14/07/2009 18:27

Quickpost will come back later but agree that sleeping in same room definitely disturbs edie( was stirring when we were in same room in France or on holiday) and waking when thought we Were awake.

spongebrainmaternitypants · 14/07/2009 19:07

ktpie, I don't get reminders for A's jabs, I just got reminded by my other mummy friends who all kept on mentioning their LOs' jabs !

Essie, thank you for your lovely comments - I do like my hair (most of the time!) it's just the rest of me that sucks . I think my height doesn't help, it adds to my feeling of hugeness(is that a word?!). I look forward to having a chat about fertility tx sometime (are you free for the 10th btw?).

whinegums, I think I would agree with the others about sharing a room - you poor things, that must be so hard. We managed about 3 1/2 months so I'm seriously impressed that you haven't chucked all your stuff away just to make room in the spare room for a cot!

Rolf, I have to say you seriously tested my pelvic floor with your fck, fckity, f*ckhead!! I needed a good laugh, so thank you .

A has loads of hair, it's really thick like mine. But strangely not esp long yet so he is the only boy in our NCT group who has not had his hair cut! I don't really want to cut it until I absolutely have to, and there really is no need at the moment. I love running my fingers through his hair, and he loves it too - don't want to cut it off!

Rolf's making me worried he might look like a redneck though!

Right off to a parish council meeting - woo hoo!

vivaGlasvegas · 14/07/2009 19:35

quick catch up...

teeth only 2 here, although hopeful for a third soon!

some hair, not loads, but no longer a baldy!

co-sleeping we noticed a real difference when we were on holiday, if C woke up after we'd gone to bed, or early in the morning, she didn't go back to sleep, she just shouted hiya at us until one of us got up.

Have added a picture of C's birthday cake to my album on FB, please go and admire it!
