Sal why did you have a cs?

MistergodthisisSal · 25/08/2009 19:14

Two reasons really:

One: I was in a car accident when I was younger, breaking both legs (was in traction in hospital for a month), and the specialists worried that something or other about my pelvis might be a problem during childbirth. Can't quite remember what now, but I think about it possible being weaker - hmm, or growths?? Can't remember, but I know specialists spent ages with my x-rays from after the accident.

and Two: I have epilepsy (technically I still get it (shows up on EEG's), even if I haven't had actual real-life seizures for years). Only times I've ever had seizures, was when I was really stressed and exhausted.

So in my situation, it was safer to have a cs. I was lucky in that the health insurance company agreed, so I had the option to go private, which might add to why it was such a lovely and relaxing experience for us (unnecessary things like own room and stuff - i'd never pay thousands for something like that, you don't need it, but it was nice).

I think it would have been irresponsible of me to ignore these very likely outcomes, so the way I see it: I will give birth (which is how I see my cs) in whatever way will be the safest for my baby. I do realise I'm lucky with seeing it this way, as I never had the "not doing it 'properly' " feeling I know a lot of people struggle with.

Whilst I agree that vaginal birth is better in a lot of situations, I think people are selfish sometimes by refusing to do what a doctor suggests if there are actual medical grounds for the risk identified. But hey, that's just me, I know it's a very un-MN'y view.

Scorps · 25/08/2009 19:23

Goodness you have been in the wars Sal

See you had actual medical reason; it's people who scehdule them for football matches that get me .

If i had to have a cs i think i would feel i had 'failed' in not having a natural birth (i think thats a normal or at least regularly occuring feeling?)but i know some others don't feel that way and that's really positive

Overall, really, it's about health, isn't it, best for everyone. I understand i have had very easy births and not everyone has that . I just hope dd2's goes as well [eek]

MistergodthisisSal · 25/08/2009 19:34

Hehe Scorps. Yep, car accident when I was young. My favourite story though involves my brother: He was in the car accident too, and had a bad scar over his face. He used to tell people he was in a fight with a lion, lol!!! (Obviously the story only really works in Africa or if you work at the zoo... )

Football matchy kind of decisions possibly a bit silly, yes. I'd err on the side of caution tbh, so I'd be perfectly happy to go with whatever a doctor think is safest. They don't actually like unnecessary operations, so I am happy to trust them. It is what they do after all.

What I do have a problem with though, is the fact that a lot of antenatal classes completely ignore the fact that emergency cs is relatively common. Yet, the classes we went to, as well as those attended by friends (we had this discussion the other day too), seems to stick to "it'll be natural". If that's what you've seen as the only real outcome in your head for the last couple of months, obviously you'll be gutted if things "go wrong". It really annoys me. It's not right.

LadyBee · 25/08/2009 21:40

I did feel that I'd failed after my emergency CS..emotionally that's how I felt, even though intellectually I knew that was tosh, and that I had been the one to say 'no, I think we should go for CS' when the drs suggested waiting for another 3 hours (after 30) to see whether anything happened.
But, I don't think I'd feel like that having chosen an elective, even if it was simply so that I can guarantee my bits remained intact and I could feel more in control. I don't think chosing to have a elective CS and specifying what should happen during it, is a million miles away from having a very detailed birth plan, choosing to have homebirth etc in terms of women wanting to achieve some element of control. Different strokes for different folks and all that.

It was Derren Brown. We had been talking about readings/psychics/coincidence etc in the morning and moved on to talking about how fabulous & clever he is. And then he sat down next to us. We were too scared, and had been drinking too much to go and say hello. But we did quite a lot of 'ooh, spooky' giggling.

So...how does one go about getting to have easy births? I would like for next time please

EllieG · 26/08/2009 08:43

You have an epidural the moment you can and then just sit back and wait for baby to pop out. Or at least that's what I did. Didn't like that whole pain thing, and discovered I am a complete wussy-pants about contractions, so moment I was 4cm dilated I jumped for an epidural. And every time I felt a twinge I asked for a top-up Mine worked really well cos I could still feel to push, just felt no pain, so was great. My bits were a tad shredded cos of pushing her out so fast but few stiches and fine.

paranoidmummy · 26/08/2009 12:04

Sorry I didn't mean to start a debate on here about births. I know it can be a very emotional subject! I can totally see both sides of the coin, I would have loved to have had a completely natural labour but after 3 days and reaching 9cm ds1 got stuck and stopped breathing and I was rushed for an emergency c section. I knew it was the right thing and saved his life but i always felt a failure for not being able to push him out so to speak!I struggled with it for a hwile and beat myself up about it, lost a lot of weight etc. So when I had ds2 I was certain i wanted a vbac, however again it was not to be. They tried everything to induce me and it became so far from the natural labour I had wanted I actually felt more in control telling them to pee off and leave me alone and opting for the c section instead. It was actually a very civilised and lovely experience in the end!
So, this time around, given my history I just feel it is the sensible option to have a c section. We also had some pretty rocky times with ds2 with his diagnosis of his hearing loss and worries there would be aomething else wrong so I feel i have had enough surprises for a lifetime and a little bit of planning certainly won't do any harm! As I say, I will always mourn the fact I have had a natural labour but., in my case, I feel I am best to focus on the positives, such as I will never have ruined lady bits or have to endure labour pains, I know when my baby is coming so I can get the house prepared for her etc. I don't, in any way, think that thyis outweighs the pros of a natural labour and if I had managed to have 2 prevoius vaginal births I wouldn't even consider a c section but considering the position I am in I feel its better to be optimistic. I just want my baby out safely and whatever way she comes as long as she is healthyy I don't care. I hope this makes sense and I'm sorry if I offended anyone earlier

bunnyrabbit · 26/08/2009 12:26

pm, you certainly haven't offended me! You are entitled to your opinion whether mine is the same or not. Actually I'm fairly relaxed about the whole thing. Each to their own. You do what's best for you and your family and basically.. well.. everyone else can sod off!

Now breast feeding, that's a different matter, just don't get me started on that!!!!

BR

EllieG · 26/08/2009 12:43

BR wants to start a heated debate! Off you go to AIBU topics lady!

VeeEsss · 26/08/2009 12:45

Glad you've made a choice you are happy with PM

VeeEsss · 26/08/2009 12:46

Anyway, let's get back to naming that baby.

I still say Nancy.

Nancy Amber C.........

Scorps · 26/08/2009 13:00

I'll talk about BF if you like

Also PM i know we all have seperate experiences that shape our opinions.

I too need a baby name!

bunnyrabbit · 26/08/2009 13:06

Oooh baby names.. I'll get all broody agin!

paranoidmummy · 26/08/2009 13:23

I like all your choices - I love Lacey (dh doesn't and has vetoed!) and I love Maisey but we know a little Maisey and we're too close to the parents for it not to feel weird! Nancy is timeless and beautiful and suits all ages.

I think I have fallen in love with Lila/Lyla. Ds1 came out with it the other day and I actually stopped in my tracks and thought 'oooh i like that' but I have had very mixed opinions. I still like Maddie but dh just thinks of maddie mccann. I'm pretty sure i'll turn him to Lila/Lyla tho

One more quick thing re the births, I am not really 'happy' with my decision as I do feel it has been taken away from me a bit by previous experiences and the need to fight for a natural with the added worry of the rupture HOWEVER i have just decided to stay positive and not dwell on it and focus on the fact I will meet her soon It doesn't stop me being insanely jealous of you mummies on here who have had a normal delivery! oh and I will def be breastfeeding I promise!

Scorps · 26/08/2009 13:25

Well as long as you bf we won't disown you then

I think i may stick to Lacey. DH has no say, in that, or, ummm anything actually.

KnitterInTheNW · 26/08/2009 13:25

I had a c-section and will pretty much have to next time too. G was breech, the doc couldn't turn him. That combined with my diabetes basically gave me no other option. I asked at my 6 week check up about future babies, and the doc said that I could try for a natural birth, but because of my diabetes the baby would be induced/CS early again. Because of my previous section they'd be able to use gel to try to induce, but not the drip because it's too much for CS scars or something like that. Gel is unlikely to work on its own because the baby would be being induced early. So looks like another sun roof baby for me next time! I was gutted that I didn't get to at least 'try' labour (I didn't even have a single contraction, my waters broke a week before my planned CS date and G was out 2 hurs later), but that was just the way it had to be. And I have the most adorable, healthy little boy at the end of it, which is what it's all about isn't it.

I love the name Nancy, it was my Grandma's sister's name. But my bizarre MIL is called that, so she's ruined it for me forever. How about Romily? I quite like that!

Or how anout Katie? All the best people are called that!

I've seen soooo many teeny tiny babies around just recently, I'm getting distinctly clucky...

Scorps · 26/08/2009 13:26

How does BF work after a CS then? Does milk take slightly longer to come in 'properly'? Or does the body recognise it all straight away?

Am just curious.

Scorps · 26/08/2009 13:27

I heart Romilly, its gorgeous.

Knitter it sounds like you have no choice, really. And yes, it is about optimal foetal wellbeing.

paranoidmummy · 26/08/2009 13:28

ps. that top para was directed a scorpio if didn't make sense!

paranoidmummy · 26/08/2009 13:32

With me, it didn't make a difference with having a labour with ds1 and ds2 - both times my milk came in within 48 hours HOWEVER both times I did have two big fat pig boys who literally sucked me dry for those first few days (...and the months that followed!) so I think that really kick started the hormones plus I was well overdue with both. I am yet to know after an earlier c section but I am guessing if I do the same and let her feed on demand then my body will do its bit

paranoidmummy · 26/08/2009 13:33

that meant to read 'it didn't make a difference having a labour with ds1 BUT NOT ds2' Christ I am so knocked up and stupid at the moment...

Scorps · 26/08/2009 13:34

I am a novice BFer so please excuse silly ramblings lol

MistergodthisisSal · 26/08/2009 13:48

Ah paranoidmummy, I quite liked the discussion, so huge apologies if I upset anyone!

Breastfeeding after cs - worked perfectly well. I had to have cabbage leaves the next morning as so much milk all at once. In my case prob also like PM's ds's - R was hungry from the word go! Basically lived on my breasts those first couple of days.

I didn't go overdue, but R started sucking from first day, so that helped. It did take him a couple of days to get the best "grip" though, which I think is the same whether cs or vb.

bunnyrabbit · 26/08/2009 13:57

What lovely names. I very much like Lyla too.

No girl for me, and boys names were so much more difficult.

I have to get something off my chest: For the past two months AF has been 25 days and much lighter than I'm used to. Unusual as I have always been 28. And then AF didn't come on Sunday, or Monday. So then I start getting a funny feeling in my side and I convince myself it's a baby! Which would mean I'm 15 weeks gone at least and that my last 3 AFs were 'not real'. Still with me? I convince myself so much that I even bought I testing kit. My DH thinks I have finally gone mad and I tend to agree. Of course AF came today. And it was probably trapped wind.

No don't laugh at me!! I think I need help..

Can't advise on 'normal' BF really, as I had to express initially because G was being tube fed hourly to up his blood sugar levels. Then he got lazy because he didn't even need to wake up to get fed , and then because he wasn't feeding from me I was having to pretty much force feed him EBM from a cup, it took us until about day 5 to get to grips with it. Milk came in on day 3 I think. We were allowed home on day 6, when he deined to wake up and feed properly!

Oh what fun...
