x post star.
I didn't express milk for my rice pudding - I used rice milk.

OP posts:
star6 · 16/03/2009 20:15

CSWS - how much did you give him?

star6 · 16/03/2009 20:15

I felt like he could have eaten 4X the amount I gave him... but the package said 1 tablespoon milk to 1 teaspoon rice...

CantSleepWontSleep · 16/03/2009 20:30

Far more than I thought he'd eat!! At least a couple of tablespoons of rice, and I added a bit more milk to it to cool it down/make it less sticky. He then whinged all through our dinner until we gave him one of our (chip van) chips! He is so obviously not our pfb, as there's no way that we'd have given dd a chip at this age!

OP posts:
aubergenie · 16/03/2009 21:09

I?m enjoying all your weaning exploits! I haven?t given ds anything yet as I don?t think he?s quite ready for solids. I have to say he?s hungry though ? He?s not feeding as often, but he drank me dry before bed this evening.

Sorry to hear about your ds purpleflower. How did you get on at the doctor?

Oh Pepper ? it?s all happening at yours isn?t it!

Ds slept for 6 hours straight last night. Longest stint he?s done so far. Trouble was, I went to bed late so didn?t get the benefit. I?m going to toddle off now in the hope he repeats it again tonight. [Fingers crossed]

What's the difference between baby rice and normal pudding rice?

CantSleepWontSleep · 17/03/2009 08:06

Baby rice is, iirc, cooked rice that has then been dried and flaked, so that it forms a smooth paste (resembling wallpaper paste in both appearance and taste) when reconstituted. Rice pudding, however, is a yummy dessert for grown ups.

star6 · 17/03/2009 08:21

lol at the chip csws
your descriptoin of the baby rice made me laugh! I'm such a fussy eater myself, that, sadly the baby rice description sounded more appetizing to me than the chip van chip!!
So, csws it's ok to give them more than the tablespoon that it says on the package? It certainly didn't inhibit his bedtime bf at all. he drank as much as usual

purpleflower · 17/03/2009 09:00

From the best night ever we went to the worst night ever DD woke at 3am (after the 10pm,11pm,12,1am,2am) and decided to stay awake! She has just had a half an hour nap and is awake again.

I think I may try her with a bit of food today, it means a trip to tescos to get some new weaning spoons though as DS's are really scummy. Should I give her baby rice first or would just some carrot be ok? I was thinking of trying at lunchtime so if it upsets her tummy it's not while she should be sleeping. I can remember being excited with DS but I'm nervous with DD
We haven't even got a highchair yet though, the local bootsale starts on sunday so we are going to try and get her one then.

They had booked DS in with the nurse not the doctor and all she did was send a sample off and tell me to call back on wed afternoon. She was very dismissive almost as if I shouldn't have taken him bacause he is fine within himself. No bad nappy yet today and it has been first thing normally so fingers crossed he is getting better and I can go and meet my cousins DD soon

That sounds horrible pepper, I hope everyone is better soon.

Hi everyone - thank you for your kind words - it has been a bit grim, but I only had to get up once in the night and we de-camped to a friend's today who wasn't bothered about chicken pox so all in all, I feel a lot more human.
Parked outside the local shop this afternoon so I could dash in and buy bread while kids in car (I hate leaving them in the car but what can you do?) and then, huge embarrassment at the till when I had no money !
Cue emptying pockets etc to rustle up #2.91 (splashed out on brocoli as well..)
Curiously, several of my keyboard keys have swapped places. @ & " are a direct swap. Try as I might I can't find the pound sign - it must have done a 3 way swap. Sigh.
Anyway, you'll have to guess my symbols!
I hope you have a better night tonight purple and DS stays horrid nappy free.
csws I laughed a lot about your giving DS a chip! was it ronshar who couldn't bring herself to puree one? BLW is clearly the way forward jenwa hope you are feeling a bit brighter today.
myjob I suspect if I ever start to wean DD she'll eat loads and make me feel guilty for not starting sooner!

Purpleflower ? re high chairs. I don't know if you're anywhere near an Ikea, but I gotthis one. It?s only £10.99 plus £4.00 for the tray (although it?s the perfect height for our table so we don?t really need the tray) and it?s absolutely fine. Just thought I?d mention it if you?re looking for a cheap one. It also comes in red or white.

star6 · 17/03/2009 18:33

I just got some banana flavoured hipp organic cereal. it says 4m onwards... is this diff from the rice other than banana flavour? cereal vsrice? can i give it to him?

pepperrabbit · 17/03/2009 18:41

star - if it says 4m+ then it should be fine. The packets I have seem to have corn as well as rice if they're called @cereal@. Just check the ingredients.
Or mash up a small amount of real banana and mix with baby rice...
Obviously that should read "cereal"

myjob what did you mix with cereal - it says cooled boiled water? Or ebm best?

star6 · 17/03/2009 19:26

when can they have those buscuits that turn to mush that they can gnaw on? And what are they called?

star6 · 17/03/2009 19:28

i could not find rice milk today as csws suggested. Just hand expressing milk into a bowl to mix w/ rice at moment! a bit unladylike

pepperrabbit · 17/03/2009 19:34

star - if it says boiled water you need to use water - not milk. They're carefully formulated so keep an eye on the instructions!

star6 · 17/03/2009 19:37

thanks that makes sense one more silly question... if you use bottled water, do you still have to boil it?

aubergenie · 17/03/2009 19:55

Star - I think you may have to be careful with bottled water and babies. Something to do with the sodium level. But someone more knowledgable will hopefully be along soon.

pepperrabbit · 17/03/2009 19:56

Are you thinking of rusks?
Mine have all loved them, though I suspect they are considered evil for sugar content etc!
I suspect they are the baby equivalent of sausage rolls in the world of mumsnet

pepperrabbit · 17/03/2009 19:59

I think aubergenie's right - I've only ever used boiled tap water. On holiday I've boiled bottled water but had to research which were suitable.. unfortunately baby brain has erased which one we used (This was DS2, 2 years ago..)

star6 · 17/03/2009 20:18

yuck, sausage rolls! I'm going to look into rusks. I think it would be great to be able to give him something to gnaw on that he won't choke on.

CantSleepWontSleep · 17/03/2009 20:28

Bottled water contains too many minerals for babies. Evian the best in an emergency, but cooled boiled tap water is the way to go .

Rusks are evil. Take a look at the ingredients star - yuk yuk yuk.

Are you avoiding giving Q dairy when weaning too star? I presume so, so do check the ingredients on the banana cereal, as many of them contain dairy. And check that there's no gluten, as that should be avoided until 6 months. I bought an organix apple and rasp cereal today, which is milk free, and made from rice. It will turn into pink gloop and make a huge mess I am sure .

Ds ate most of a boiled new potato, about 3 sprouts and a bit of broccoli for tea, largely without help . I did cut the sprouts in half and give them a little squeeze for him first. His new high chair arrived today (finally - we had to cancel our original order and get it from somewhere else), and it suits him so much better than the temp one that we had been using (same as your Ikea one Aubergenie). He tended to slump forward a bit in the other one (would be fine in a few weeks I'm sure), but sits much more upright in this.
