It is still snowing here (North Yorkshire) and I daren't leave the house, with DH away so no-one to call if we get stuck. The farm yard is thick with snow, and the lane to the outside world looks horrendous. I measured the depth on the garden table and it is 5 inches deep and still falling! Oh, just saw the severe weather warnings. Blast.

eandz · 02/02/2009 10:50

there is snow outside my window!

but not very much, maybe 3-4 inches? i don't understand what all the fuss is about, we would get 2ft of snow daily in md and still have to go school/work on time.

foxy
thanks for that link. I'll be calling it as soon as it quiets down here.

MelT76 · 02/02/2009 11:00

I've just come round from fainting at how much DP spent on a photo yesterday. £350!!! For one bloody photo!!! It was lovely tho

Yes the photo's were done at Venture (DP's mum's Christmas prezzie) Will not go there again. My sister had some done of Callum as a surprise for us for Christmas. They were done by some bloke at the market in town. She got 3 10x8, 3 7x5, 3 6x4 and some wallet size for £60. One of them is my FB pic if you've seen it.

eandz try an old fashioned potato sack for weaning if you don;t want to use a plasic bag!

Was going to get C weighed today but decided against it because of the snow.

Yes star but he won't spend it on diamonds!!

foxytocin · 02/02/2009 11:08

this is England they love talking about the weather. I agree with you btw.

I lived in N. Yorkshire in the 80's and you'd have 2 ft snow lying for a week without it thawing and not one day did they ever call off school. Same thing when I lived in the States.

lollyheart · 02/02/2009 11:13

My poor dh finished work at 5am thismorning and is still there he tried for 2 hours to find a route to get home, every time he came to a hill the car would slide, so he gave up and went back to work, i hope his boss lets him have tonight off he will be so tired.

The dc love the snow they have been playing in it for ages now

Kagey · 02/02/2009 11:32

I'm loving looking at the snow (don't get to see it that often). Not so loving in the snow though. DH and I had a very little snowfight when he came back home this morning. The silly boy for some reason did not believe that there was no trains or buses working so trudged out, got wet and cold, and trudged back again. He is still contemplating walking 5 miles to get the DLR.

E seems pretty non-plussed by it all and is playing on the bouncy chair.

DebiTheScot · 02/02/2009 11:47

we've got 8 inches of snow. It is the most I have ever seen down here. The school I work at is closed for the 1st time since I started work there 6 years ago. Have just built a big snowman. I think I was more excited than ds1 and ds2 doesn't care obviously.

Ponymum · 02/02/2009 11:54

OK, so I'm making a fuss over a few inches of snow... But foxy, I nearly pmsl when I read your post. Have you ever seen Monty Python doing the 4 Yorkshiremen sketch? You'd fit right in. You, know, "back when I was young we'd walk to work at t' mill through 12 foot of snow, then have nowt but a handful of gravel for our supper", etc!

imoscarsmum · 02/02/2009 12:23

Am seriously impressed at people venturing out in the snow! It does look lovely but I am scared of stepping in it, going a*se over tit and seeing C's pram sailing away down the hill! How do you do it???

dg would definitely go for hotel. IMO, people who post that you shouldn't generally have strong opinions about not leaving baby in room but equally there will be plenty of parents who would do what you suggest and just haven't posted.
I think alot of people have been frightened (rightly so) by the terrible story of the McCanns but (IMO) what you suggest is not the same.

See how you feel about the hotel when you arrive, get a room near the dining room so you're not racing back 6 floors if LO cries and if all else fails, order room service & snuggle up together!

DP and I are going to stay in Wakefield tomorrow for 2 nights while he works, C and I will chill out and shop. We're only in a premier inn so 1st night we're taking C to a chinese in her car seat for early tea around 5.30 and 2nd night we'll get pizza in the room. If we were in a larger hotel, we would put her to bed and go down for dinner ourselves with the baby monitor. Just think of it like a big house and you are downstairs, LO is upstairs in bed. Enjoy.

jenpet · 02/02/2009 12:35

I am very of all snow. We have NONE, not a cloud, freezing cold though - have just cycled around to take DS1 back to school & can't feel my face anymore! Digitalgirl we left DS1 a couple of times with baby monitor, again not a great distance from bedroom to restaurant & would pop back several times as well, but never had any problems....if you think it will spoil your evening worrying could you get a babysitter to be in the room instead?

CarrieBo · 02/02/2009 12:55

lolli we bath ds in the big bath, just an inch or so of water and lie him down in it, he has a right old kick about with his legs!

I've learned two important things in the last two nights@

  1. ds doesn't sleep as long if he has ff at 10:30pm instead of bf
  2. if ds has a short late afternoon nap, he's ready for bed at 6pm, not 7, so wakes early for dreamfeed, and then again at 5am. But I'm very proud of myself for setting a new personal best - only 11 mins from first squawk to being back in bed having had a feed!

HOpe you have a wonderful time at the meet-up tomorrow.

digitalgirl what we've done is put the baby to bed in the buggy, fully reclined, and thrown a coat over it so its dark. Make sure the baby falls asleep before you get to dinner, then park the buggy in a quiet corner where you can see it. I know rationally that leaving the baby asleep in a room if the room isn't too far away and you have a monitor is fine, but in reality I would spend all evening looking at the monitor, and if any of the lights did flash, I'd be leaving the table and racing back to check (and the noise of me opening the door would probably wake the baby anyway!!)

I'm in inner London and we've got snow over 2 feet deep on my street! More than I've ever seen in England before. Earlier I got as far as the end of my house before giving up, but now the street is clear enough that I can make it to the main road, and a bus just came through so I may go to the post office later and mail Ebay packages.

I'm supposed to be hosting a NCT tea group atm but doubt anyone will come.

dg The 18-room hotel sounds about the same as having your baby upstairs at home?

becaroo · 02/02/2009 14:15

DG - I would NEVER leave either of my children alone in a strange place, even if I was only downstairs with a monitor. I dont mean to scare you, but things can happen that you wouldnt hear on a monitor (eg: a baby getting a blanket over their head and not being able to get it off - this happened to me once when babysitting. Thank god I checked her every 15 mins!!!!!!) My attitude has nothing to do with the Macanns -I have never and will never do it.

About 3 inches of snow here...school run was fun this morning!

Dh and I did it last night for the first time since ds2 birth...it was fine, didnt hurt or anything. Was a bit concerned after two 2nd degree tears, but I still seem to be in one piece down there!!

I have a question about teethers....I thought everything a baby under 6 months put in their mouth had to be sterilized??? Just bough ds2 a teether and it says just to wash it in warm soapy water.....?

Enjoy the snow everyone!

becaroo · 02/02/2009 14:18

DG........room service?????

Thats what we did with ds1 on trips to hotels...will probably do the same with ds2 when he is a bit older.

Ponymum · 02/02/2009 14:23

Am I the only one who had withdrawal when MN went offline for, like, a whole half hour? And obviously I couldn't even post about how upset I was...

DebiTheScot · 02/02/2009 14:29

becaroo I don't sterilise anything, not even the bottle that ds2 has at night. He puts everything he finds in his mouth so can't really sterilise them all.

digitalgirl I would (and have) leave children in a hotel room with the monitor but you might find that the monitor doesn't have enough range to get from your room to the dining room. Ask them to put you in as near a room as possible to the bar/restaurant area and then it should reach. We went to Cardiff last May and had to put the monitor on the floor in the hallway by the bar area and then sit at the very edge of the area so we could still see/hear it. And our room was the 2nd one along that corridor.
Only problem with room service is that do you have to eat silently and in the dark?

I've put photos on facebook of our snow. Farnborough and Basingstoke got a mention on the national news for having the most snow. DH has just come home from work as the site closed at 2pm so he's delighted to get to sit in front of Sky Sports News all afternoon watching the football transfer news.
Don't know if I'll make it to Basingstoke tomorrow. Don't know if the train would be an option

Debi.....thats what I'm thinking...you cant protect them from EVERY germ can you?

Hopefully · 02/02/2009 14:43

What a pants day! Except for the snow, obviously. As well as crappy doc's trip this morning I took T to be weighed and he has only gained 5oz in 2.5 weeks . They didn't pressure me to wean or anything, but were a bit concerned. He was born on the 98th percentile and is now on the 9th. What should I do?

CarrieBo · 02/02/2009 14:44

Excellent youthwork there starlight! becaroo we don't sterlise anything. Baby stuff is washed in hot soapy water before the dishes get done, and I have a separate brush. I pour boiling water over the bottle teat but that's it.
