Bit bored so thought I would start the new thread

OP posts:

BTW - does anyone think it might be an idea with those babies lacking in passion for any solids other than yoghurt to try taking them back to baby rice and milk again and building up from there. Maybe the veggies and sauce are too radical a flavour? That's what Gina and Annabel recommend starting with and i totally missed that out and went straight in for the first stage jars.

Essie3 · 22/01/2009 20:28

Hm, Iestyn doesn't really like baby rice. Or baby porridge.
He also doesn't like one-veg purees eg. tonight I tried to give him carrot and potato puree. (I know, there's 2 there but potatoes don't count.) Nothing doing.
Anyhow, today is a Bad Day. Officially. Iestyn was sent home from nursery in disgrace!

Not really. But I got a phone call after midday saying he wasn't himself, he wasn't eating or drinking, and was quiet. I went to pick him up and he laughed as I arrived and gurgled as I took him to the car . I then took him to my Mum's where he proceeded to eat a massive lunch, and played and chatted for an hour afterwards.

The sneaky little...!!!

But now I'm a bit panicky again because after the 100ml milk success the other day, we're back to 10, which isn't enough. And now I'm considering visiting for lunchtime feeds and the like.

Essie3 · 22/01/2009 20:33

Katyjo I need to talk to you!

PiggyPenguin · 22/01/2009 20:35

Amber - I have tried going back to basics with Jamie but he wasn't having any of it. He won't even eat just baby rice.

I have tried the sneaky yoghurt then something else routine and Jamie immediately stopped eating and that was it - not even yoghurt was allowed past his lips. Dh is convinced this is a mark of his superior intelligence. I think he is just a stubborn little monkey!

Going - on the basis that we may one day be on sandwiches, what are you putting in your fillings then? I am always on the lookout for good ideas!

I didn't think babies were sent home because they weren't themselves. I thought that they only went home if they weren't well. Blimey if Luke got sent home when he wasn't himself he'd never stay more than half an hour! Still, good news that Iestyn's OK. What did he have for lunch? You had the whole yoghurt thing didn't you Essie? How did you get past it?

Amberc · 22/01/2009 20:47

Haaaa! Love the superior intelligence thing!

abdnhiker · 22/01/2009 20:48

Amber, Sybil, have you tried finger foods? I can't remember! I tend to have to give Fraser something to feed himself at the same time as I'm spooning calories into him else he loses interest and gives up!

Essie how cheeky of Iestyn! Is the 10mL from a bottle or a cup?

Amberc · 22/01/2009 21:09

yeah tried finger foods - he munches them up but most ends up on the floor/bib/me. Is that to divert attention from the spooning? Or is that as the predominent source of calories? If it's to divert attention i'll give it a go if you think it'll work!

Essie3 · 22/01/2009 21:13

Yeah, well, I have my suspicions. I'd asked about nappies this morning and maybe it was revenge - fine, you have him all day then!
No, not really. He seemed to have a bit of a temperature but then didn't, and he was a bit odd last night as well (and also gave the impression of having a temperature when he didn't). The not eating - what the manager said was 'I don't want him to start losing weight', and that's fair I suppose - what if I joked or said 'oh he's at nursery and losing weight'. It would reflect badly on them.
With hindsight I should have bfed him there, but as I said, I'm quite reluctant.
But is this superior intelligence?! He is headstrong.

Aberdeen the 10ml is from anything they can force down him. Often a beaker, sometimes in desperation a spoon. I've just gone begging on the breastfeeding board and off to seek the answers now. I'm also making notes in my Annabel Karmel book. (Disturbing, btw - not enough fat = serious problems; iron deficiency = serious problems. Gulp!)

spongebrainbigpants · 22/01/2009 21:27

Amber, I do know a couple of people who use finger foods to divert attention with some success - LO opens mouth to put finger food in and you can slip in a mouthful of puree instead! I don't think you could use it as main source of calories if they're not actually eating any of it!

Essie, sorry to hear about the continued feeding/weight issues .

whinegums · 22/01/2009 21:31

Hi all. How is it that I feel like I DO nothing, but I don't have any time?? Have been trying to catch up with emails to friends this evening, while DP is out, but B has been a bit unsettled. I'm trying to get him to go longer between feeds - after some screaming at his usual feeding time of 10ish last night, he went back to sleep til 12.30, and then we lasted til 4.30 after that. Will persevere....

Neenz, I don't think food affects sleep, because B eats loads, and I think he's getting plenty of milk during the day too. I'm delaying meal times so he's hungry for milk first, adding EBM to his food where I can, and it doesn't seem to make any difference here. Anyway, will be interested to hear how Esther gets on tonight.

Sybil sorry to hear that Jamie has cottoned onto your yogurty ways - stubborn little monkey indeed!

neenztwinz · 22/01/2009 22:21

LOL at superior intelligence - that's what I thought when Esther cottoned on to my yogurt/savoury trick. Actually tho I think it may have been teething pain cos she whinged for over an hour after going to bed tonight but 10mins after Calpol she was asleep and has been since. She has slept through the last two nights which is why it will be interesting to see how she does tonight with less food. It is a never-ending argument the food/sleep one cos there are too many variables involved (food/teeth/daytime naps/habit) to be able to pinpoint the culprit. And if it is teeth then of course she will wake up! Will report back tomorrow.

systemsaddict · 23/01/2009 06:53

Essie I remember the little drum!! used to go in distress to my mum at nights saying I could hear a drum in my pillow so my ear was going to hurt again ...

Superior intelligence - I was so proud yesterday - they have put an 'I can do ...' board up at nursery with photos of each baby doing something. Eg 'I can sleep', 'I can sit in my chair', 'I can eat', 'I can roll'. Caitlin's was 'I can push buttons' and there she is, sitting concentrating in front of their Vtech walker, pushing the buttons for all the world like Mummy at her laptop. I am sure this means she is intellectually advanced . Vtech, all is forgiven!

Forgive me if I am slightly giddy today - she Only Woke Up Once! this hasn't happened since 3 months. I can see light at the end of the tunnel. Of course she may be sleepy cos she is sickening for something, so it may well be an oncoming train, but for now, I'm cheery!

Allergies: I asked on Weds if Caitlin should be avoiding the foods Liam is allergic too, or if we should be cautious in when we introduce things, but the allergist said the thinking seems to be changing to 'suck it and see' rather than avoid, and there is a big study atm looking at exposing children to the known allergen foods from early on. I think gluten is different as it's about exposing the gut at the right time more, but I think it's only an issue if there is coeliac disease in the immediate family, which you would know about anyway.

Good to hear we are not alone on the dust mite thing. We have accidentally done things right with our cheap non-carpeted floors, cold bedroom for ds (hangover from cot death cautions) and he's only just got a pillow and not had a duvet yet. I'll just order a dust-mite covered pillow and duvet for him and change his sheets more often

Dark floors: We got pale vinyl for the kitchen and it shows EVERYTHING and always looks filthy. Did it on purpose to make us clean but it was a big mistake, would go for dark / patterned next time!

abdnhiker · 23/01/2009 08:01

Amber, I use it to divert attention, even pulling his hand from his mouth at the last minute to get a spoonful in! But he's also getting good at eating reasonable amounts of finger food too.

Essie - unfortunately I don't think that there's such a thing as a smart but non-stubborn baby at this age

RE food and sleep - last time the scientist in me charted every meal, nap, and sleep/wake cycle Duncan had. I then entered all the data into a numerical program and searched for correlations (visually, numerically, you name it. I was desparate to find the magic bullet). Result - absolutely no hint of a correlation on a daily level.

systemsaddict - I am convinced! I'm ordering dark flooring!

abdnhiker · 23/01/2009 08:16

re: my scientific conclusion - of course the result only applies to DS1!

ahedgehogisHibernating · 23/01/2009 08:43

We have rolling, I now cannot leave Isaac alone, he is rolling all over the place. He did it in his cot last night while I was putting the changing table down and is now all over the floor. He goes both ways.
I am off on a babyproofing mission today then.

Can't post more as I have to go and protect my sky+ box, dvd player and various games consoles

katyjo · 23/01/2009 09:11

Hi All,

Mia is still waking up in the night here, keep thinking its because she's not eating/drinking enough during the day, but who knows!!

Sybil Sorry to hear Jamie is being difficult with eating, MIa did exactly the same, would only eat yoghurts and fruitpots but I now wonder if she wasn't feeding that well. She is eating well now, but will only take milk when sleeping or falling asleep - sound familiar!!
I mix yoghurt and savory food together a bit, when I am really struggling, well not so much mix as pop a blob on top to mask other food!

Essie I just gave up trying to give Hamish EBM and let him have juice (bad mummy, but otherwise he wouldn't drink) and would feed him when I got home, and again before bed if he would take it and I would give him a dreamfeed before he went to bed. I was only working one and a half days at the time though. Sorry, probably not much help to you.

Aberdeen I also feel very lucky to be able to work part-time, I also have grandparents close by who provide childcare. It is difficult sometimes as I feel that I can't provide my all to my kids or my job, but is the best option for me. I don't look forward to leaving my kids, but I do enjoy my job and love that I can help provide for the family.
LOL and looking for correlations!!!

katyjo · 23/01/2009 09:12

Sybil I meant because she wasn't well

katyjo · 23/01/2009 09:14

Essie I meant before WE went to bed (about 11pm)

pleasechange · 23/01/2009 09:18

hedgehog sounds like he's well pleased with his new talents!

We tried to start babyproofing and put some corner protectors on the hearth. Problem was, they looked so interesting to A that he made straight for them and managed to pull them off

Sympathies to all those having trouble with food. Alexander eats well, but for some reason cries a lot of the time. I think he hates the bibs I put on him, but as he insists on spoonfeeding himself they're totally necessary!

Feeling brave and posted a thread on AIBU about MIL's cat. I'm no good at links but feel free to have a nosey

spongebrainbigpants · 23/01/2009 09:33

allnew's thread

Morning all! AH, I'm at your sleep study but it did make me laugh! A had loads to eat yesterday and woke up twice in the night!

HH, have fun with the babyproofing - watch those cables!

spongebrainbigpants · 23/01/2009 09:34

Just watching Wanted Down Under (sad I know - but I love Oz and it's my way of dreaming of emigrating!! ) and they have a baby called Horatio!

Poor kid!

pleasechange · 23/01/2009 09:35

Thanks sponge! (I didn't mention that my MIL is generaly a PITA, as I thought I'd have the MIL police down on me like a ton of bricks!)

spongebrainbigpants · 23/01/2009 09:41

Just replied to your thread - really wanted to put that I would give anything to have an excuse not to visit my MIL but avoided it for the same reason!!

YANBU btw!!
