One more thing - can I point you in the direction of my eBay auction for a height chart (we bought on and got given one). I should have just advertised it on here but wasn't thinking straight.

Its here

TheTwelveDAISYOfChristmas · 13/12/2008 14:25

hana, he is stopping as of Monday , and is on the sofa until then!

tistheCEEBEEtobejolly · 13/12/2008 14:29

Choc I have found the cherry teat dummies slightly better at staying in but, other than sellotape wrapped round the babies head, can't think of anything else

Also, the trick of the mind about the baby being in your bed is one of those things that about having children that no-one tells you about - I think it is very common and I did it a lot with DS1 (not happened yet with Sam though ).

Rosa · 13/12/2008 14:32

I wish I had an Argos here as I could do with the swing. They are a fortune here and we have a gym and a Chair and so not really space for another one.
Daisy if your dh comes to bed smelling of cigars then its a no no so I have been led to believe as its second hand smoke .
DH did out navity scene with dd this monring and iggle piggle and pocoyo are in there this year !!!!
Thanks for the something smelling of you suggestion - The muslin seems to work but she does seem to snuggle up against it which has me a bit worried . When I out it down as a 'sheet' then it doesn't work.
She is not in a fixed feed routine it vairies from 2 - 4 hrs night time inc but she does seem to store up in the evening.
Gotta go dd1 awake dam as wanted to do some secret chocolate eating !!!!

TheTwelveDAISYOfChristmas · 13/12/2008 14:35

oops DD pressed something and it posted the message. She does things with this pooter that I have no idea of!

ceebee, I'm glad you have your lovely DS back

vbab, I think your DH should give you at least one lie in at the weekend. Parenting is a joint venture and he should do his bit to help out...imvho.

Choco I had one of those moments last night. He was in his crib for the first part of the night and when he woke me up I was patting the bed looking for him!

tegan I just BF whenever F is awake, sometimes it's 4 hours, sometimes 40mins between feeds. He soon lets me know if he wants it or not!

ChocOrange05 · 13/12/2008 16:15

Thanks ceebee we will try the sellotape around the head tonight.

twinklingfairy · 13/12/2008 16:33

Thanks guys for kind words. merri i am so sorry thatyou feel that way every night, but then you do have 2 to contend with, I think I woudl probably feel that way every night if I had 2.

We had a great night on Friday, fed at 11 ish slept until 3ish then fed again at 6ish. So maybe DS was making his peace with me, for upsetting me so
Last night was back to every 2 hours or so.
Unfortunately though, I now have flu! Yesterday was horrendous. I eventually put DD to bed (she has not had an afternoon snooze since DS came home) but she was grumbling like billyo and I was knackered. Was lovely, cos DS played ball and slept too. Only prob was that I shivered the whole time. Ended up with 4 layers and curled up on the couched stealing DSs heat whilst I fed him

co sleeping I hadn't thought about it, just went with it. DS gets the covers up to his chest but as he also smooshes up to me he quite often ends up under the covers. But close to me, so I felt/feel there is still plenty of air circulating. I pretty much sleep naked, he wears a babygro but no vest.
I am probably breaking loads of rules but it seems to be working for us.
I also have a bed guard, you know the ones you get for toddlers, and DS sleeps on the outside so that I protect him from DHs sleeping bulk He likes a can or 2 of an evening. That doesn't bother me cos my body protects DS. See! More rule breaking!

Have decamped to my mums for the night. DH is working on the car which would leave me stranded and alone, so I have run away to seek company and solace from my flu. Which is much better today, I feel a fraud. I told mum I had to come in cos couldn't cope, but probably could. Ah well, she will be happy. My being here means we finally get my LOs to church. I gotta go be a good catholic if I want to get DS baptised

dingdongDOZYMAREishigh · 13/12/2008 17:46

Hello everyone

daisy my DH also smokes (outside and never ever in front of the kids) but I absolutely insist that he does not come to bed smelling of smoke when Tiger is in the room - I know I am probably being way OTT (especially as both my parents smoked around my brother and I and we were fine) but I just can't stand it (They say ex smokers are the worst, I can vouch for that as used to smoke in excess of 30 marlboro lights a day)

God, will get off my soap box now

twinkling great to see you posting in your old name - I love it, and a very good idea to have a cot guard. we very rarely co-sleep as Tiger is in the travel cot at the bottom of our bed, as my main concern was that she would fall out or be rolled on.

Choc if you don't sell your Charlie and Lola wall chart, I will deffo have it off you as DS2 is absolutely obsessed with C+L and Peppa Pig. it would make a fab stocking filler!

For those of you using real nappies - I have been using baby naturecare for a few years now, but want to make the switch to reuseables. Today, in TK Maxx I bought some Totsbots fluffles size 2 (No wraps though) 5 for £24,99. I know this is a good bargain so went for it. Have been on the nappylady website and got lots of advice but have the following questions:

  1. Will I need more than 5 nappies?? Presumeably Yes but whilst in there a woman told me that they are very absorbant and that would only use 2/3 day (unless poo'ed on) Is this true??!

  2. Do I need totsbots wrap or can I use any? How many wraps would I need?

  3. It has a fleecy liner attached - do I add a different one on top to catch poo??

tia!

TheTwelveDAISYOfChristmas · 13/12/2008 18:29

oooh, nappies; my favourite subject

fluffles are absorbent, but not that absorbent. We get through about six or seven nappies a day at the minute now he has stopped pooing with every feed, but I reckon 15 is a good number to have as that means you can wash every other day. so, you have one set for use that day, one in the wash and one drying iyswim. The good thing about fluffles though is that if you wash them in the evening and put them on the radiators they will be dry again next morning so he very minimum I would have of those is 10. The downside of fluffles is that they are a bit bulky, especially on little babies. Are they velcro, popper or nippa fastening?

Wraps, you can use any wraps, and motherease wraps are very popular and bombproof, but I can vouch that the new tots wraps are pretty good on wee and poo containment. You can buy Motherease wraps at Waitrose I think.
I would say three or four wraps are needed. I usually give the insides of mine a quick wipe with a baby wipe when I do a nappy change and have two on the go at once, alternating each change....the third one is backup should any poo get on the wrap. I was them by hand each night as they keep looking nicer longer if handwashed and it saves any velcro snagging in the wash.

The fleece liner in tots acts as a nice stay dry liner so you don't need another one, but lots of people use them to help keep poo stains at bay. As Tiger is FF, her poo will be more formed so you can use a paper liner in addition and then just flush this all down the loo (but you can wash and re-use paper liners that have just been weed on), however I think with paper you lose the advantage of the fleece. You can use a second fleece liner as well.

I love cloth and love talking about nappies .....you'd never guess would you?

TheTwelveDAISYOfChristmas · 13/12/2008 18:51

I'm also an ex smoker Dozy and hate the smell of it now...but mainly because sometimes it smells sooooo good. And I love the smell of DH's cigars. He usually waits half an hour before coming to bed though as I complain about his cigar-y breath.

Got some gripe water today and all it seems to have done so far is make F sick! Although he has had some just now in the grip of some horrible wind and has just rolled over and gone straight to sleep!

The cot is up and just the right height, but there is a bit of a squishy gap between the cot mattress and my mattress. Is this not as bad as gaps between sofa cushions?

dingdongDOZYMAREishigh · 13/12/2008 19:34

Thanks daisy I just knew you would be able to help also expecting missdee and pinky to come and give their 2 penny worth, as I just know they are both just as passionate as you on the subject matter!!!

Ok, I gather that I need more than 5 - that is good, all cool as I have looked at a few websites today and the superficial/frivilous side of me is LOVING some of the wraps and can just imagine Tiger with a big cute bottom!!! I also keep stroking the fluffles - they are sssoooooo soft!!!

Now, here is a silly Q.................

have looked at the fluffle and can't see any velcro, popper (although there are 2 at the front but they are connected to an inner pocket iyswim and no idea what a nipper is . From reading the instructions, I think you put it on, then wrap??????????? Can anyone confirm that????

So these are only size 2 - so can't be used until Tiger is 18lbs wish I had bloody read that in the shop

So.....I don't add any liners, just use the one that is connected to the fluffle (love that word!) but how do you get the poo of that? Tiger is still doing breastfed type poo's...very yellow and runny-ish so wull this not surely stain??

ALso, where do I put the nappy - won't it stinkt he house out?!! Do you do a seperate nappy wash??

Love from the novice xxx

TheTwelveDAISYOfChristmas · 13/12/2008 19:47

If there's no velcro or popper then you need to fasten it with something. You can either use pins, or one of these. It has little teeth that grab the fabric at either side and on the crotch. Much better than pins. I'm sure you can buy them in Mothercare, but I have them littered all over the house; I'll see if I can hunt one out and pop it in the post for you!

TheTwelveDAISYOfChristmas · 13/12/2008 19:51

meant to say that a tight fitting wrap will hold it in place but the nippa is good for holding it all together while you get the wrap on iyswim. And if you got motherease airflow wraps or similar, then they aren;t tight enough a fit I don't think.

Fluffles are lovely aren't they? even if they do look, according to my DH, like skinned teddy bears . They give a real fairy baby look though, it's a pity they have to be covered up by a wrap.

We are using tots cotton nappies at the minute and they look lovely on with the star spangled tots wraps.

misdee · 13/12/2008 19:53

FIRST SMILES

AWWW

and one to make you lot all laugh

misdee · 13/12/2008 19:58

oooo nappies.

atm i am loving the mothercare smart nappy systems with washable pads in them. only downside is that i a having to change the wrap each time sophie poos as it gets on the wrap. i am using tots bots and motherease wraps at night-time (i dont change sophie overnight unless very poo-ey. she goes 11pm till 6am in same one ).
once sophie gets bigger i will move onto size 2 tots and ME wraps again. atm when i put a tots bots nappy on her her bum ends up higher than her bum.

IME you need at least 10 nappies and 4 wraps. ideally 15 nappies, just in case of an incrediably wet/pooey day or the washing machine packs up. you need enough for when you are doing the washing to last the morning/aftyernoon if using a tumble dryer, or for overnight if drying at night on racks.

dingdongDOZYMAREishigh · 13/12/2008 20:13

missdee gogeous!!!!!!!!!!!! It is so, so lvoely when they smile at you isn't it?? I definately have LBS as Tiger is "losing" her newborn look and getting more and more active everyday - her neck/head control is amazing...not flooppy anymore - My newborn is no longer newborn!!!

So how did you decide what nappies you were going for? Trial and error?? would you buy 2nd hand wraps????

misdee · 13/12/2008 20:20

have been using cloth since dd2 was a year old. i had a nappy advisor come out to me to see what work best and i bought just one nappy and wrap to start with (dd2 was huge and had outgrown disposables by the time she wa sa year old). that was a tots bots size 3 and XL Me wraps. they worked so well i went and bought more, and she was in cloth till potty trained at 2.5yras old.

with dd3 i tried loads of different ones, but in the end went back to ole faithfuls tots bots and MEwraps again, as they are fool proof and never let me down. and easy to use.

but i picked up the smartnappy on impulse buy, and like how slim it is on a little baby compared to totsbots, and whilst she is so young, and having laods of nappy changes aday, i dont need a super absorbant tots bots atm.

Pinkyminkee · 13/12/2008 20:53

Hello all.
misdee those photos are gorgeous!! What a smile.

dozy IKWYM about the newborn thing- Dinky is growing so quickly- I don'tthink the 0-3 is goign to last very long at all.

ceebee so glad your little boy is back! . Little boys are such treasures, I think. Can't vouch for what happens when they hit 12 or so..

feeding dinky is going at least 4 hours between feeds but realy fills her boots at each feed, and has gone back to feeding at 11pm and 2 am, though she woke again at 4:30 this morning and went back to sleep until 7:30, so she's doing ok, I think.

nappies ah nappies. Have been using totsbots since DS was born- though some of the originals are a bit bald in places .
I use totsbots size 2 for DD2 and size 1 for Dinky.
I do have some diddy diapers as well in the small size. They are quite good for new babies as they are pretty cheap and slim fitting (totsbots are proper roundy bum nappies).

Both those fit with a nipper.

I have some ellas house hemp nappies- their daytime ones are very slim fitting, so fab for little outfits- though not so good for babies with skinny legs. I use Bumhuggers at night for both girls.

I use the ME wraps with poppers- my favourites.

I've tried quite a lot of nappies, but these are my favourites. I have friends who swear by motherease nappies but I don't like them. I don't like birth to potty nappies as they can look like a sack of spuds, and m/ease nappies just aren't as absorbent as the others, IME.

I'd say 10-12 nappies and 4 wraps for the totsbots- they are pretty bombproof, esp. with a nippa.
I alternate two wraps over a day- so when I change the napy I put that wrap to air until next change then swap again- that wau they don't get 'sweaty'.

i dry pail.I don't use liners for bf babies before 6 months as the poo can slide off. fleece ones are ok, and do protect the nappy, but not a necessity at this stage.

I do have terry squares and prefolds that I use from time to time, but you do go through the wraps a bit more, as misdee says.

You can use the size 2 tots on a new baby, but they'll be mahoosive and you prolly won't get any of her clothes over them.

TheTwelveDAISYOfChristmas · 13/12/2008 20:55

Dozy, I bought a load of nappies second hand on a classified site and then bought more of what I liked. I must admit I'm a shaped terry fan when they are little and then pocket nappies when bigger and more wriggly. I tried bambineo's version of the fluffle but I didn't get on with it at all.

I also like Ella's house bumhuggers for nighttime as they are sooooper absorbant but the fleece liner keeps baby dry.

We're still using pampers at night but are having to change in the middle of the night as he is filling them.....they are size 2s and getting on the nippy side already.....DH is allergic to real nappies so generally puts a pampers on him.

Pinkyminkee · 13/12/2008 21:00

ooh yes I bet you'd get some size1 nappies hardly used on a resale site for a reasonable price. I bought new at the time because I knew I was going to have more than one baby, but if I was buying now I'd most likely buy second hand- but prolly new wraps as they can get a bit worn.

TheTwelveDAISYOfChristmas · 13/12/2008 21:01

I've also got some terry squares for emergency use

I've got a few birth to potty nappies left over from the mother and baby awards testing, but I'm not convinced of btp on a newborn either.

photos are lovely misdee . We have had a few gentl smiles from DS2, but no big grins yet. He does a funny little laugh though and talks to us, especially if we aren't looking at him when he does it to get our attention.

TheTwelveDAISYOfChristmas · 13/12/2008 21:03

how heavy is she dozy? I've got some nature babies wraps that are new, but too small for my big bruiser that I could do a deal on! They go up to 14lbs.

Pinkyminkee · 13/12/2008 21:13

THat little gingham wrap you gave me is very cute, daisy, I would recommend them, DM

Have you tried the nature throw away nappies, daisy? I find them vey good. I use them if I'm out for the day as it's less bulky than two lots of cloth, they don't smell chemically like the other throw away nappies. Tushies are good, too, but I have to get them from Unicorn (serious lentil weaver shop in Chorlton).

TheTwelveDAISYOfChristmas · 13/12/2008 21:17

We use the nature babies on DD (the only nappies that don't give her a nasty nappy rash) and bought some for DS but they were very gapey at the legs and we were getting pooey leaks. they might be better now he has filled out a bit!

I'm a bit miffed that sainsbury's have stopped selling nature babies as we have a bit of a trail now to get them.

dingdongDOZYMAREishigh · 13/12/2008 21:21

How did I just KNOW that misdee, pink and daisy would be along with their experience/opinions?! Love, love, love you girls for that!!!!!!!! (Excuse the gushing, but I have just drunk a whole bottle of Laurent Perrier pink champagne to myself as DH is on night (tiger) duty and is watching River Cottage Xmas......leaving me to Mn pissed

Anyway.......

Tiger is not in 0-3m yet - she is just 9lbs so about to make that move soon......

Have looked at the classifed nappies on ehre and hopefully got 2 BTP motherease nappies for £10. I am so, doing this blindly as no idea really on what I am doing!

daisy not sure your wraps would be any good as my totsbots are size 2 can't believe I was such a dimwit and didn't look at the size...I am SUCH a novice.

What resale/classifed websites do you use???
