Hope no one minds me starting a new thread?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

ooooh, glad to see you're back hopefully. I was getting a bit worried.

We seem to be making progress. DD is in Gro-bags now (although they are DS's old blue pirate ones) and she is going to be sleeping in the nursery as from Monday night. DP is having a vasectomy monday and has to spend 48 hours in bed so DD is off to her own room. Mind you the house is so small I can still hear every murmur and gurgle even without the monitor.

DP has just asked me if I am typing that I am fiddling about on Mumsnet while he holds the baby on the sofa. I would never do that !

DavethePlasterer · 25/10/2008 11:05

YAY! Congratulations Foxy's DD1.

Not that I'm keeping a register, but has anyone heard from barnpot?

Star1ightExpress · 25/10/2008 11:14

I'm soooooooooo chuffed with myself. I'm lucky with the expressing anyway I know, but I've managed to enhance my technique and can now get an oz a minute

To all you expressers out there, (assuming your DP is like mine and when on night duty wastes your precious milk mistaking 'everything' for hunger, thereby leaving most of the bottle untouched but contaminated) I've figured what to do with the left over milk.......

Add it in your other DCs milk or cereal!

However, if you don't have other DC's I think it's only fair that your DP adds it to HIS cereal!?

ipanemagirl · 25/10/2008 11:49

Hello All! Hope all are well.
Is it ok to pop in?! I find it so hard to keep up but I hope no one minds me coming to say hello now and then!
dd is asleep now with dh upstairs so I'm trying to hit the chores and not stay here too long!
But she seems fine but has a mighty big screamfest once a night (usually between 11-2) where she shouts herself hoarse and eventually feeds to sleep. It seems like classic colic but it's hard to know what it is!
I haven't done the mother and toddler group thing yet. when do people start doing that?
With ds he was about 3 months old before I hit those groups!
Also I've only had dd weighed the once (about a week after she was born) should I go again soon? My mind is so mushy I can't remember anything and I find all the info the mw gave me just makes me fall asleep!
Happy week end to all!

hopefully · 25/10/2008 14:09

DG congrats on your DS's decent sleep - sometimes even if you don't sleep yourself it can feel like a massive recharge just not feeding or entertaining for a couple of hours...

I made the mistake of giving DP a break last night and settling T after his 10:30 feed (normally go to bed and leave DP to it). Of course, it was the one night where he woke at 2am and 6am, instead of a more civilised (in my mind) 3:30 and 7am. Luckily DP took him while I slept after the 6am feed, so I'm a bit recovered. Am loving that we're in a pretty good routine though - DP and I have just taken him out for a good 90 min walk in the pram, knowing he'd stay asleep for the whole thing. I just cannot believe how different things are to a few weeks ago. Although we still have colic screaming without fail every evening, he is such a textbook little boy the rest of the time, and as long as I don't make the mistake of over or under stimulating him during his awake times, he's great during the day. I am so glad I made it through those early weeks, couldn't have done it without you lot!

Essay over...

meglet · 25/10/2008 14:10

I am sitting here on MN and have been wondering why I have a damp top. ooops, forgot the breast pads. Glad that didn't happen when I was out earlier!

carrieon · 25/10/2008 14:34

meglet I went out without breastpads for the first time today (accidentally I might add). Soooo glad I was wearing a black cardigan to cover up the damp patches. Why do I always soak through my favourite bra within hours of putting it on, then its days before it comes through the wash again?!

dave I'm glad you're 'keeping a register'. I just hope people we haven't heard from are having a great time bonding with their LOs and not suffering in silence.

Great news on the cast foxy.

Last night we woke ds at 10:30 and kept him up til 12, then he did great sleeps overnight, just waking for two quick feeds. I'd rather have the awake time then, than for two hours at 2am like we have been having.

potxola · 25/10/2008 14:59

Hi, I am a bit confused. What name has StarligtMckenzie now? AND.....Who is Dave the plaster? Don't laugh please. I never have more than 2 min in the computer and I read your posts, but my brain is not the same as before.

Things are getting better around here. my daughter sleeps during the day in the sling, carricot, moses basquet and with me during the night. The Infacol seems to be working. She still feeds on demand and now I make sure I give her the Infacol for her colic before EVERY feed. I did not used to do that and that is why it did not work.

Hopefully it is great that you managed a routine with him. You are doing great!. Sorry you are another mum with colic problems. Did the infacol work for you?

gothicmama · 25/10/2008 15:22

imascarsmum Ds2 also has reflux so much washing, he is on meds and I am considering clarabel powders (spelling) so we are ff here after a few weeks bf (i can not express)

lollipopmothershalloweenghost · 25/10/2008 17:28

Are you not allowed to just put the EBM that isn't drunk back in the fridge for later then? I'll be pissed off if you can't because Elizabeth messed about with hers today and only drank an oz when I had expressed 6.5 so I just chucked it back in the fridge, I'll be well miffed if I can't use it!

ninja · 25/10/2008 17:53

Starlight is now Dave - think the explanation might be on another thread.

Going to express (see if I can beat the 7.5 oz in less than 10 mins) and then a nap. DH is getting M into bad habits, but if I get some sleep I don't care! (well only a little bit)

Star1ightExpress · 25/10/2008 18:04

potxola Sorry tis me (Starlight) messing around.

lollipop It depends! Like with any food, you wanna be careful how many times you reheat! bm is amazing stuff though so quite resilient.

lollipopmothershalloweenghost · 25/10/2008 18:23

Starlight - I like your different names, mess away! I have one thing to say though - the only way to eat Nutella is straight out of the jar with a spoon, so you'd better run along and tell Dave that!

How do you heat your EBM? I put it in a bowl of hot water but I don't think it did much other than take the edge off it, is this all that needs doing?

I am going to be taking my parents out for a meal on Friday, we'll only be a couple of hours but I'm already feeling the dread of being away from my baby and I don't really want to go now . I know i've got to stop being a complete sap though otherwise it'll be a year before I know it and I won't have left the house! My DP is gallantly taking up the challenge of EBM and cloth nappies though so how can I refuse!

digitalgirl · 25/10/2008 20:26

glad the cast is off foxy starlight I am very you can express an oz a minute. I haven't expressed since Thursday...should probably do it again tonight.

hopefully you're so right about having a few hours to yourself, even if I am on MN!

DS actually slept in his basket till just before midnight last night then we decided it was time to change his nappy and feed him before we went to bed. He was down in the bedside cot by 1am, woke at 3:30. Another long feed after which DS was wide awake, so I bounced him on the ball and then put him down on his tummy in the cot by 4:20. He woke at 6:30 for a feed and then wouldn't go back to sleep, so DH took care of him and I slept from 7-9.

Am hoping tonight will be a marginal improvement on last night and that he'll go a bit longer between feeds. I've also finally learnt the difference for when he's just sucking for comfort and not for food - it's when he constantly drops the latch. When he does this I should just pick him up and try and bounce him to sleep rather than keep stuffing my boob in his mouth.

Perhaps tomorrow we'll put him upstairs when he drops off at 7/8pm and leave the radio on - then we won't have to move him come mummy and daddy's bedtime.

Taking my mum to the airport tomorrow, she's out of the country for a month - no more 9am lie ins till December!

Sassyfrassy · 25/10/2008 21:21

Hello everyone,

Went to a nearly new nct sale today and got go in the members queue for the first time I've now stocked up on sleepbags and got lots of cute outfits for Katie. My favourite buy was a furry leopard dressing up outfit for Becky though. She put it on straight away and went round shouting roar! She's determined to wear it to preschool!

Katie is still rubbish at sleeping so I've decided to give the cot a good go after next week when I'll have time to devote to it. The plan is to use this week to get her used to certain things and associate them with sleep, like a completely flat pillow that she really likes. Then when it's time she'll go in the cot, awake but sleepy. I'll stay with her until she falls asleep, talking and patting her but only picking her up if she gets very upset. So, fingers crossed that she'll take to it.

DD1 was a lousy sleeper and I always regretted letting it go on until she was a year old and poor Katie is quite miserable trying to get to sleep so I think if she can learn to fall asleep by herself it will be good for her.

potxola · 25/10/2008 22:14

Sassyfrassy Good luck with the cot!. Lorea did all right fo day, but I had to stop because she will wake up with the wind/reflux and it was very upsetting for her. I will try again once the colic is over.
Starlight..... You are just great. I bet you are one of those people with lots of charisma. i mean it. You brought me to this group, remember?
I am going to put a photo of Lorea in my profile in 2 min. Her first photo looking at the camera. I want you to know what she looks like now, after all, you helped her mama through her difficult pregnancy.

eandz · 26/10/2008 00:16

so wait, if i take out a bottle of stored breast milk opening it will contaminate it?

(sorry, i've been reusing since my supply is going down the toilet)

an 0z a min ???
what is your technique?

Potxola - she's beautiful!

DH still in bed and I have TOO much to day (help dd with hwk, washing, get M to sleep, shower, make packed lunch, bar=th dd1....) so why am I here.

Bye and have a good Sunday folks

Star1ightExpress · 26/10/2008 10:33

Potxola You realise now we could never meet, for risk of you being sorely disappointed! Lorea is beautiful!

eandz What's all this about you loosing your supply?

You WILL begin to reduce if you begin to reduce many of the bfs. 6-8 weeks is a classic growth spurt time where the baby will most likely want to nurse constantly. You can loose confidence in your milk because you might feel that you are not keeping up with the lo's needs, but the ONLY way to keep up with the needs is to nurse constantly iyswim. Supplementing is no good!

Once the baby has drunk a little of the milk, the baby's spit gets into the bottle and it will begin to breed bacteria. Not a problem for the short term but leaving it ages, or reheating many times will help that bacteria to grow faster. The best thing to do is store ebm in very small quantities so you can give 3 small bottles rather than one big bottle if the baby is hungry!

Leonie Yes Baby Starlight has had two colds now and you're right it does seem to help with wind and also sleeping, but you really feel for the poor little things. Take comfort that there is a link between no. of colds a child gets in their first year and amount of time taken of school for illness, - i.e it is supposed to reduce it!

pacita · 26/10/2008 10:54

LeonieD, don't despair. You are probably just really tired. I too check my child a hundred times every night to see if he's breathing, fuss about and fret and feel completely neurotic, and he doesn't even have a cold. I think a good rest (if/when you can manage) will make you feel a lot better in yourself. Do talk to your GP though, in fact, talk to everybody, as that also helps us feel better.

yesterday I did a classic exhausted mum number: after a night of constant waking, fussing and nursing for hours, the baby decided NOT to sleep during the day. Still in my pyjamas, I put on a cardie, I put him in the carrycot and walked the streets and wept. It took him ages to fall asleep, and while walking aimlessly I happened to pass a smart shoe-shop, with a gorgeous pair of boots in the window. I walked in, put them on (picture a sleep deprived bag lady with wild hair, wearing a night dress, a big amorphous cardie and a pair of black leggings with white socks and that'll more or less give you an idea of what I looked like). I decided to keep them on, and left the shop in high heels, having spent an extravagant amount of nappy money and feeling tons better. I think this boots will make me a better mother. Honest.

Everyone seems to need breastpads but I never have... Is that a bad reflection on my milk production? I never seem to leak, which I'm sure is a real nuisance, but also quite reassuring, I imagine.

Star1ightExpress · 26/10/2008 11:08

pacita LOL What a fab story! I bet that is worthy of quote of the week if I could only figure out how to nominate!

BTW: I don't leak either, and with no.1 I never felt let-down. I think I'm beginning to feel it a little with no.2 now though!

potxola · 26/10/2008 12:44

Ninja Starlight Thank you. I managed to find a photo of her brother when he was her age (I know shameful, I never managed to put them in an album, they are all in CD's)and they look the same. She is, obviously girly, but I reckon they are going to be very similar, so we are very happy.
Pacita What a great story!!!! I bet you will remember it every time you wear them.
I am not going out much if you don't count the giant Boots near me. I love the shop, the only one I need with 2 kids, How sad is that.
I am going to give Nutella and the spoon a try, I need ENERGYYYYYYY

Did you watch the Xfactor? I must admit, I am impressed wirh Ruth. She sings very well and was really cheeky with Simon.
Her eyes are sooooo Spanish, she is very average looking for an Spanish woman, but Simon really has a thing for her, doesn 't he?. How many times has he called her "a real woman"? It is a bit embarrasing. She should not need to sing with her tits out to be valued as a singer, don't you think?

LeonyD I bet your lovely daughter is Ok, it is normal for them to get colds this time of the year. Lorea has a cold too, also brought home by her brother. Go and buy Nasosal, it clears the nose and helps them feel better. BF all the time helps her, it is for confort and she has slept on the bed with me with her head a bit raised. Also you can try giving her a warm bath.
It is awful to see them ill, isn't it?
Starlight I am sure you are the real thing.
I need to go and cook for my ds,Spanish rice with veg. and bacon. It takes 10 min in the pressure cooker.

Very quick scan of your posts whilst Arthur sleeps in the sling (what would I do without the Wilkinet!?)

The great news here after the panic over Arthur's weight loss is that he is officially getting fatter. He was weighed yesterday at 2 weeks plus 2 days and is for the first time going up in weight, nearly back at birth weight. .

Feeding on the left is still a problem, but there's nothing like knowing the baby is fattening up to take the edge off the agony.

I'm still doing a few top ups of EBM, and will do so for another few days until his next weigh in. If I'm going to use it within 3-4 hours of expressing I just leave it out and use it at room temperature. Otherwise it goes in the fridge and just gets slightly warmed in a bowl of hot water. He will take it either from a bottle or lapping from a cup, or straight out of one of my breast shells!
