Thought I'd start the new thread using paro's suggestion

Ok Ive just popped on to scream.....could my life through anything else my way....My DH is now in fkn hospital....straw camel back and broken, thats me these days i think.

Not sure really what is wrong with DH bowl related it seem I think he had food poisoning a couple of weeks ago and its got worse as he continues to feed it...just have to wait and see I suppose.

Olivia has been up all hours with hellish wind as lovely as it has been to hear her cry 7 hours solid isnt fun, a succession of farts and she is fine

Im going to bath the girls wait for DS to come home from golf then Im going to bed with TV and a pretend G & T.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 29/09/2008 19:17

Oh Josey, so sorry for you, Sebastian has screamed pretty much all day as well but has now stopped, enjoy your G&T mine is a large glass of wine. Hope your DH gets better soon.

Amberc · 29/09/2008 19:31

Josey - I do hope DH gets better soon to give you a hand - enjoy your pretend G&T - is it just T with no G?

Poppy - selfishly does that mean you might come on Friday - we'll cheer you up...otherwise, can;t you change the tickets for a better time?

Essie - I know what you mean about tedium. Went to mothercare and bought toys today just for something to do.

PP - looking forward to seeing you on Friday - missed you and R last time.

UDC - hope you enjoyed your hols. Keep thinking about mine and getting annoyed as DP has not had to work late once yet so we probably could have gone anyway.

Bought a baby hand/foot castihg kit today to make a paperweight for DP's birthday. It says you need to wait until LO is calm like whilst feeding or asleep to do it. I'm f*cked then!! Will need DP to hold him down so the surprise is gone but hey ho - tis the thought that counts.

Does anyone else have terribly rough dry hands from all this hand washing and washing up? Mine are like a potato picker's they're so bad. I went to bed with avocado oil on them and gloves but it's not made a difference.

pleasechange · 29/09/2008 21:07

Hi I've not been on here for a few days. Was visiting my family last weekend and had a lovely time.

I think that like essie says, sometimes I don't post because I don't have anything new to say! But my news today is that A slept for 6.5 hours in a row last night. That broke his previous record and I'm so hoping it's a sign of things to come

I've really noticed a difference in A over the last week or so (he's now almost 13 weeks). He's much calmer and so smiley and playful. Seems like a different baby from when he was colicky. The thing is now though that I feel I should be buying him more toys to play with!

Don't know if anyone has started buying for Xmas yet, but I'm trying to start thinking about what to get A. It's quite a good time for us all, as the lo's will be around 6 months and so they'll be much more interested in their toys then.

I haven't started to think about weaning yet, but it is good to read all your posts for tips. amber I've heard of those net things, they sound great

josey sorry to hear you're feeling blue, hope things improve!

There's been no word from dramaqueen for a bit - I know she wanted to knuckle down to some work but bdq if you're lurking it would be good to hear from you

hedgehog1979 · 29/09/2008 21:19

josey hope DH and Oli are better soon.
Amber haven't had a prob with my hands although I use the body shop cocoa butter handlotion, ALthough I am more likely to use the alcohol gel that they have in hospitals as my sister keeps acquiring bottles for me
poppy sorry you can't get to Paris, but would love to meet you on Friday (being as its my birthday and all)
Essie almost want to apologise to you for you finding it tedious. Isaac and I have been swimming today and then he sat (propped) in the pram and watched me in the garden and laughed at me when I was freaked by a frog - we don't even have a pond just a very wet garden
UDC at Dorothys tooth, am hoping that we don't get that for a very long time yet.

My son expressed himself at the Tate Modern yesterday with a huge poo that meant he needed to be washed in the sinks in the ladies loo, how very elegant!!
We have been posting less cos we have been making the most of the weather and walking all over the place and getting out and about.

My grandfathers funeral has finally been sorted for next week but now I am stuck as to what etiquette is for babies and funerals, and what do babies wear at funerals? SIL has 'told' me she is buying Isaac a Black Babygro so he is the same as everyone else but I feel that she is overstepping the mark slightly. I was going to get a black vest from H&M and put it with some dungarees or something to conform but I don't like the idea of all black at funerals. Am I being weird, or even AIBU?

poppy34 · 29/09/2008 21:28

hiya..amber lol re potato pickers hand but I am with you there - whats worse is hands getting so dry/sore my rings are rubbing so have to keep taking them off.

Thanks for all the nice messages -

HH -cool time to have a birthday (mine is on sunday ) but have managed to sort paris trip a day later... am braving a flight alone -must say not sure what etiquette is for baby (probably not somewhere you can show the bunny ears baby gro) but your sil sounds bit ott.

quick post as making most of dh last evenign here this week but will doubtless be on LOTS for rest of week as i'll be needing my mn fix

libralady · 29/09/2008 21:30

Hedgehog Happy birthday for Friday, it's mine on Thursday along with our anniversary, although DH is away this week .
I took DS1 to a funeral when he was just over 4 months old and I just put him in a navy romper suit (it was August). YANBU re your SIL. She is overstepping the mark dictating what your son can wear. She's only family by marriage isn't she? I'm sure your Nan wont want to see the baby in black

libralady · 29/09/2008 21:31

Wow poppy another October birthday. Happy birthday for Sunday

libralady · 29/09/2008 21:33

Amber I have dry, cracked hands as well, but I'm not great at slapping on hand cream at the best of times. Better get into a routine as it'll only get worst now it's starting to get colder.

poppy34 · 29/09/2008 21:53

libralady happy birthday to you too ... I need to fidn some kind of pump action hand cream that isn't too greasy I think if there is to be any hope of me putting it on

OP posts:
FiveGoMadInDorset · 29/09/2008 22:14

The Hemp handcream from BOdy shop is really good as is L'Occitaine lavender one

spongebrainbigpants · 29/09/2008 22:26

Libra, your driving day sounds fab! All that fun and raising money for charity - result!

Lin, seriously impressed that you stuck at bf for so long if you were having to express. I know I would have been locked up if I'd had to express one more drop (I loathed expressing with a passion) so I admire your persistence.

Deb, your filming sounds seriously full on! Can't wait to see the programme.

josey, so sorry to hear about your dh . Hope he is better soon - to say that is the last thing you need right now seems a bit of an understatement.

Allnew, have to admit we're not planning to buy Alex much for this Christmas. He's not going to know anything about it, so we'll probably buy a couple of small bits and then put some money in his savings account instead.

HH, babies in black? Yuck. I'm with you on not liking black at funerals and the last one I went to we were specifically asked not to wear black, but that was for a 39 year old woman so I suppose it's a generational thing. I think if you stick to a plain babygro that would be fine. And your SIL is being totally unreasonable IMHO.

Amber, I am obsessive about hand cream and always have been so no problem with rough hands. Would second the recommendation for the hemp cream - it's fab.

poppy, HH and libra, happy birthdays to you all!

spongebrainbigpants · 29/09/2008 22:27

Btw, have put another couple of photos on my profile (sorry, bit of an obsessive photographer!) if anyone's interested.

One of A in a cardigan which was dh's in 1972! (This is going to be MIL's Xmas present). And one of him reading his new book - I said my son was very advanced!

ThePenguinProject · 29/09/2008 22:51

Handcream - I recommend Molton Brown as it's in a big pump action jar and smells yummy. Not too greasy either.

Josey - What a complete nightmare, hope DH gets well v v soon.

Hi Lin!

Amber - I bought two casting kits about 6 weeks ago and still haven't got round to doing them. I also have a mug on which I am meant to put a foot/handprint, I haven't done that either.... In Kew they have a pottery / paint your own crockery shop that does it for you. I think Mamawhizz went. Perhaps we coould go there or find somewhere similar? Is there anything in Greenwich market?

Essie - You hit the nail on the head, not much to type because things are pretty boring right now...

HH - Ryder has an All Blacks baby gro, but I guess that's not what you mean. It'd be good to wind up your SIL tho and pretend you misunderstood...

Loadsa birthdays - Happy Birthday everyone.

Xmas pressies wise, mainly planning lots of very silly photos to embarass R when he's older. [http://www.next.co.uk/shopping/children/newborn/1/2 this kind of thing]. BTW, have you seen all the halloween stuff? Look [http://www.abfab.co.uk/Fancy_Dress.asp?SearchBy=H_BT here], I love the first spider outfit, then scroll down and look how p'd off the ghost looks.

ThePenguinProject · 29/09/2008 22:54

Damn the links didn't work, I'll try again:

xmas

halloween

And if you like them, you'll love these

ThePenguinProject · 29/09/2008 22:55

Oh and I got a bumbo today - it's fantastic!

ThePenguinProject · 29/09/2008 23:14

Poppy, if Edie does have a cold, I recommend saline nasal drops to clear her nose - AliPalli recommended them to me and they really helped Ryder, especially before bed.

Amberc · 30/09/2008 08:10

What a dreadful night we had! The weird feeding nightmare continues with Luke. Woke him for dream feed and he didn't want any of it and arched his back and turned his head away. Put him back to bed and he woke at 1.45 and took 120ml in about 10 seconds flat then fell asleep. He then woke at 4.10 so I just stuck a dummy in. Then 5.30 and again wouldn't feed at all. I got 120ml down him at 7.30 this morning. I wrote down what he had yesterday and we are about 8 oz of formula out from what he should be having. He has the recommended amount for a 2 week old baby. He is super skinny but very long. 0-3 month things are too big round the waist. I don't know what to do - any ideas? He's also now lerned to turn onto his side and prefers to sleep that way now. Put him down on his back and within minutes he's turned. DP felt he had to check on him every 5 minutes but there's nothing we can do to stop him as he is already wearing the bed restraint which is meant to stop them doing that!! Sorry for egotistical post but I am actually quite worried now. The HV will tell me his weight is ok but he has no fat on him at all - it's all length. I wonder if there is such a thing as a more calorific baby milk.

spongebrainbigpants · 30/09/2008 08:23

Amber, yes there is a more calorific baby milk - Aptamil Hungry Baby, but don't know how many more calories or how much good it will do.

FWIW we have a v skinny baby in our NCT group, but his HV is completely unfazed. He is a good colour, alert and active (and Luke certainly sounds active!) and does plenty of wet and dirty nappies. Those are all the signs of health as far as she's concerned.

I would imagine appetite and weight are as individual as all the milestones they're supposed to hit too. Are you and your dh fairly slender?

Doesn't help with the rough nights though - sorry .

Amberc · 30/09/2008 09:09

Sponge - Me and DP - slender?! In our dreams!!! I would say we are 'normal' (although clearly I am 1.5 stones away from my normal at present!). Hungry baby milk believe it or not has no more calories in it than normal milk. It has more proteins and fibres in it to keep babies from getting hungry as quickly - people use it for night times I guess. Luke is happy and alert so no worries there but imagine if you worked out your baby was having what was meant for a 2 week old - would be worrying right? Perhaps I should just let him get on with it. Tiktok on the feeding thread said I should go to HV and she might advise a dietician (I think tiktok is meant to be an expert on feeding). My HV has less good advice than the people on Mumsnet anbd I trust you guys more so I am not counting on anything (remember her advice on reflux symptoms was to change brand of milk ).

goingfor3 · 30/09/2008 10:00

Amber It sounds as if your ds is fine. Aslong as he is progressing I really wouldn't worry. The amopunt of milk they 'should' be having is just a guideline - some will have more some will have less.

DS seems back to normal now just a bit snuffly. He did another M&S job yesterday and was really good.

Having trouble thinking of christmas presents. DD1 is getting a bike as she has outgrown her. I really don't know what to get DD2 and will feel guilty if I don't get her anything big in size. DS has plenty of toys in the loft - this si a good one

Amberc · 30/09/2008 10:05

G43 - is that what they'll be doing by Christmas???!!!!

goingfor3 · 30/09/2008 10:05

Regarding books on weaning I borrowed this one from the libary and it's really good. I prefer it to yhr Annabel Karmel one I have.

goingfor3 · 30/09/2008 10:07

Probably not walking with it but some will be sitting which is a good way to play with the toy. I'm pretty sure it's from 6 months.

needahand · 30/09/2008 10:21

A big hello to all as usual I am way to press for time to read all the posts so I will post and then try to read as far back as I can before DS wakes up.

Josey sorry your DH is sick, I hope he feels better soon.

Debs I have missed all the filming saga, just managed to catch bits of it. Very brave of you to be filmed. You probably have already said but is it a program we might see in the UK?

Things are really hectic here and I am with Josey on the straw and camel's back (although my straw issues aren't medical so not that bad really but they seem like that to me).

Since we moved and SJ has been sick he has been very unsettled, I can't get him to sleep anywhere during the day apart from in the sling on me. At night he wakes up 2 or 3 times for food (like a newborn really) and I am just shattered. So I thought I would try baby rice...and he doesn't like it...then I thought I would try formula...but he doesn't like it either. He spits it and pushes the bottle with his tongue and pulls faces when we try to give him formula (whereas he takes the bottle if it contains EBM). I tried mixing a bit of EBM and formula last night but he still woke up twice. I need to crack this as I am starting work in November and what will I do if he won't take formula?

In addition I have had problem getting the surtgery to find me an appointment for his 16 weeks jab. The nursery I had booked for him is hideous so now I am in a frantic rush to try and find alternative chilcare considering I start work next month and all the nurseries are fully booked until September 2009 and sometimes 2010 and if I wasn't busy enough I have just realised that I have about three weeks to find a school for DD next year and apply. I thought I had ages still to do that but here it is one year in advance...

Sorry for the long post and rant but needed to get that off my chest.

GF fungle would you be up for checking the new shopping centre, could be fun and I could certainly do with a day/afternoon/morning out!. I am sure they must have plenty of places where we can feed the baby in peace.
