new thread everyone!

LM I can't stop thinking about this either but just can't do the boiled water for every bottle and cool it down while DS2 screams for his milk. I am sure the risk if reduced now that they are older and I still make sure everything is sterlised well. As you say no media cover or HV public notice about this, so how are we supposed to know about it.

LuckyPumpkin74 · 31/10/2008 22:29

Too true mitchell. Blimey O'riley, as if we don't have enought to stress about. I can't believe how it's completely taken over my mind the last 24 hours. If only I hadn't stumbled upon that thread, I'd be none the wiser.

The general opinion from the mums here is that very very few people actually do what the guidelines state, purely becaus eit's so impractical.

I sterilise, and use cooled boiled water, DD2 is 6 months, I'm sure any risk is very very very small. Think I will just carry on as before .

Night all

notsoseriousanymore · 01/11/2008 08:53

LP - I think you are right and I intend to do the same. I've had no problem with using cooled (warm) boiled water and hten storing in the fridge. Given we have already started weaning, it's less of a problem.

The guidelines are sooo strict, though, I wonder if it's far more profitable for the suppliers to sell RFU milk??? Oh, I am cynical!!!!!!

Things better here this week [PHEW emoticon] and DS happy - I am starting to make a little box of things - his first hat etc., and his first haloween costume will be going in there too... I'm such an old romantic at heart, and know I will love to look back over these times in years to come!

Sorry, haven't had time to catch up with all of you. I hope you all have lovely weekends.

thefortbuilder · 01/11/2008 09:02

for fear of being totally shunned - we haven't sterilised ds2's bottles since he was about 3 months. he's been scrabbling around grabbing everything into his mouth, and all the bottles get washed and then washed again in the dishwasher on a really really hot wash.

and i'm just going to continue doing what i find best and easiest re bottles - i don't follow the guidelines because with ds1 he would be screaming and screaming for food for 30 mins while it cooled and then it was still to hot for him....

OP posts:
LuckyPumpkin74 · 01/11/2008 10:37

flick I think dishwasher is so hot it's the same as sterilising?

baiyu · 01/11/2008 14:58

I certainly don't sterilize my nipples...
Our EBM bottles get boiled before use but then I just put them in a big sealed tupperware til I need them. DS puts everything in his mouth (including new fascination with the brown paper bags from our veg box) so I'm not too concerned.

Let's have some pics of our LO's in halloween costume! Will add one to my profile now.

DeathByMonkey · 01/11/2008 15:33

Yes! Yes! I am back to my pre pg weight - very happy DBM today!

(Course there's still the extra stone that I wanted to lose before I conceived, but hey, one step at a time!)

macaco · 01/11/2008 15:34

posting and running....

there's a long thread somewhere about not sterilising AT ALL, advice from a paed for premmie twins...can't remember the details...wash in hot soapy water and air dry?

I'm going to carry on as we are doing now. Run steriliser, make feeds with v hot water, cool in icy water, stick in fridge, use within 24 hours.

No halloween costumes here but am on the trail of xmas outfits from mothercare (stock arrives later at Spanish mothercares)
Will keep you updated! Lets see some of these halloween piccies!

thefortbuilder · 01/11/2008 15:41

i had a friend who long after her lo was crawling everywhere was still sterilizing her bottles....

anyway preparations for birthday dinner party all on the go so gotta run!

IndigoBlue · 01/11/2008 16:33

Hi all

Been so busy recently not had much time to get on here. Wanted to say though LM74 that I think you should just carry on with the bottles the way you've been doing it. I make them the same way as you, plus I stopped sterilising at 3 months and just put bottles through the dishwasher. I'm sure the guidelines are given as a way to create the least risk but like others have said it's just not very practical especially if you have other children to deal with / busy life!
I would ignore those rude people on other thread!

Deathbymonkey - congrats on losing your weight, I'm still losing slowly but still a way to go.

Baiyu - Finn looks very cute in his outfit!

Pina - glad you had good holiday, hope your dds are sleeping a bit better again now.

Hello to everyone else.

I've started weaning ds a few days ago, he isn't overly interested so taking it slowly. He is still sleeping well, it's been dd waking up in the night recently instead.

Had new bathroom put in which is great compared to the old one, trying to get rest of house sorted out & been doing lots of painting etc.

DH has taken dd to the park so I'm having a bit of a break although ds has just started crying so I better go.

pina sorry to hear about the TT tickets, what an arse!
I'm now trying to track down a hood for my Jané push chair. I want the hood for the push chair with an in built rain cover. I got a special offer on mine and didn't realise it didn't come with a push chair hood. Looks like I can only get it as a spare part from the offical jané suppliers, of which there is only one in Seville. It's about 40 mins drive and then the parking is impossible, so 40 mins drive and 20 min walk and then it's not open on Saturdays and closes for siesta 1.30-5.30. So....I have to try and get there one morning but not Mon Wed as i work that afternoon and it's too much running around. Can't go afternoons cos DS in bed before I'd have time to get there and back. AAAAARRRGGGHHHH.
Spain is soooo shit for customer service.

babylove21 · 02/11/2008 21:05

I could have sworn i left a message, maybe i wrote it but closed page
i know this is the wrong place to be asking and my dd is seeing the consultant tomorrow afternoon. Infact its because of that i didnt want to seem like a neurotic mum.
she has been poorly since fri. Started with chesty cough ( can feel her breathing when you hold her), she doesnt have a runny nose, but today she has had the runs enough to make her bottom sore. I have been giving her disprol when she will take it. But today for example shes had only 1 bowl of porridge with apple and 3 bottles all day. I'm frightened to put her to bed because she sometimes starts choking when she coughs, the pitfalls of not being able to sit up and clear her throat like an adult would i suppose. I'm just not sure if i am ok to wait or should i be calling nhs direct ? I dont know what her temp is, i dont have a thermometer.
Shes just 6 months but a low birth weight and weighs about 12lb now, or she did last week. Any advice ?

Mocat · 02/11/2008 21:18

macaco I didn't know you could get a hood with a built in rain cover!!! I got the rain cover and get a bit frustrated that I have to put it on after DS goes in - other than that I LOVE my Jane pram and I won't utter a word against it . I hope you get sorted quickly.

lm I've read all that guff from the other thread. Glad it has calmed down and sorry that you got shot at but the timing couldn't have been better for me. I have long planned to start DS on ff at the start of Nov so that he and my boobs will be ready for my return to work at the start of Dec. I hope to give him BF before and after work but his feeds with the childminder will be F. I think I will use the cartons of ready made stuff if it's going to be such a risky business. As he will only be having a few a day it won't be too costly, I hope. We start tomorrow.

I am just back from a 5 day trip to see various relatives in Eng and Scotland and have had a lovely time. Everyone fed us and I haven't done dishes or laundry since Tue. The skin on my hands is nearly soft again (does anyone else have skin like sandpaper on their hands from all the wasing after nappy changes, bottle washing, etc?). It had taken ages to catch up on the post and tangent post since Tue!

Ds (6 months past on Oct 22nd) has been getting spoon feeds since he was 5 months plus a week. Just stewed fruit or veg, baby rice and expressed BM. It seems to be really slowing down the pooing process. When he was just getting milk he had a dirty nappy perhaps every other day (as opposed to every nappy when he was a newborn). Now he poos every three days or so and the poos (TMI here, sorry) are small and like playdoh (spelling?). Over the last 5 days I cut out the baby rice, thinking that might be responsible for the lack of crap (vulgar, aren't I?). No improvement. This evening, I gave himm cooled boiled water to drink with his carrot and parsnip and I hope that will urge things on. Advice, please. No crank messages from people who don't like my name, nationality or shoe size (I can say that happily in the knowledge that all ladies on this thread are a) nice and b) have excellent senses of humour.

And - no cat here while we were away but there isn't any evidence of a mouse invasion. They obviously haven't heard the cliche. They are rampaging up and down inside the walls and under the floor boards though.

With regards to the nooky question, Tesco will have noticed on our Clubcard records that we have not bought many condoms since we started buying nappies. There you go.

Mocat · 02/11/2008 21:22

Sorry, babylove, I was writing while you posted. I don't have any practical advice other than if you have any concerns, phone the out of hours' service. You are going to know if your baby is not right and trust that. Best wishes.

Mitchell81 · 02/11/2008 21:41

Babylove: If you are worried it does no harm phoning NHS direct, they will either reassure you or my suggest bringing her in to see a doctor just as a precaution to check her over. Hope she is ok!!!!

Mitchell81 · 02/11/2008 21:57

Mocat: Glad you had a nice relaxing break. Re: nappies I was told that BF can go days without a dirty nappy, so I am sure it is nothing to worry about. Maybe just a change in his usual routine.
About your comment, have you had problems on other threads as well. Outside of our May 2008 thread is a mean place. {smile]

Macaco What a pain about having to drive to get the raincover can't they send it to you.

Pina Any news about the TT tickets? Are you and DH on speaking terms again? I love the photo of the girls they look so cute.

Indigo I also started last week with food and DS2 wasn't overly keen tried again this weekend and he seems more interested but not too bothered. Will presevere!

Deathbymonkey well done on gettingback to pre pregnancy weight

Baiyu DS looks very cute

Flick glad that you had a nice weekend

NSSA Hope you had a good weekend and same to everyone else. I also keep everything and store it in a box. Each child has their own and I love looking at their baby things and memories over the years. God I sound old, I am only 27 I promise.

I must go to bed now as I am exhausted been making calendars online all day for christmas presents for grandparents and great grandparents.

babylove21 · 02/11/2008 22:11

Thank you mocat and mitchell81
I'm on my own tonight with her and that doesnt help as i have no one to say " d'you think shes ok?"
I have rang the out of hours number. I spoke to a lovely gp but the call was hampered by baby cries etc. And there was so many questions. Anyway she said someone should take a look at her and to take her to the local hospital ( 30 mins drive) at midnight!, the duty doctor wont be back until then apparently.
I'm glad shes going if it will put my mind at rest, maybe they can ease the wheezing on her chest or something. She was choking so much she has been sick. I dont know if i am more upset than she is, i ended up crying. I feel so useless to her. I appreciate your all tucked up by now, but i will let you all know how she is in the morning.

Mitchell81 · 03/11/2008 06:56

Babylove It is the worst when you have no one to help make a decision whether your child is sick or not. I always like a second opinion, but you know yourself if your child is unwell. How did it go at the doctors, did you take her? Good luck with your appointment today, I hope you get some answers.

notsoseriousanymore · 03/11/2008 08:00

Babylove.... Let us know how you are this morning. It's horrid feeling alone in the middle of the night. I know JUST how that feels, when there is no-one you feel you can phone.

One thing I did when DS was born was do a Paediatric first aid course. I did the certified one (the one child minders have to do) and it made me feel a little more reassured. I definitely recommend it to anyone who is alone with a baby.

Mitchell - SOunds like you had a good weekend... The calanders sound good... We made some handprint plates for Gran this weekend!!

Pina - How are you and your DH? I'm sure you are talking again!!!

Hello to everyone else!!!

We had a MUCH nicer weeekend... though I had to drive on Saturday and everyone else was drinking (lots) so all the other adults fell asleep on the sofa by around 9:30!!!

DS is lovely... Weaning is going well. I have only introduced one 'solid' feed per day, which we have at lunchtime and have only introduced fruits so far (will tackle veggies this week)

Please think of us this afternoon - DS and I have an interview. I am really hoping I get it, as the company are very child friendly / understanding and it would be working from home so I could work it around DS's needs [fingers crossed emoticon] DS is usually pretty cute and smiley so I have everything crossed that he won't take this opportunity to wail!!!!

Mitchell81 · 03/11/2008 08:11

NSSA Good luck for today, I am sure Harry will be on his best behaviour.
Will you need to send him to childcare, or will everything be done from home?

LuckyPumpkin74 · 03/11/2008 08:57

Good luck NSSA what sort of job is it?

Very very good luck babylove for your DDs appt today, please let us know how you get on. DD2 has been coughing a lot and at the weekend her bum was proper red raw . Broken skin in some places . They tend to get toxic poo when they're teething, so DDs red/sore bum maybe a sign that some teeth are coming? Also they tend to get a runny mose with it too. I hope she's better today.

I have given up on the formula thread! I saw my Dad at the weekend, and he (like NSSA) is very knowledgable in all things scientific like this and he agreed with NSSA, firstly that 70 deg wouldn't kill anything, and secondly that adding powder to hot (not boiling) water would only cause a greater multiplication of any bugs.

I have decided to just stick with what I was doing, but i am being much more diligent with putting the lids on the bottles as they were sometimes left for hours before I did so!

DD2 getting better with food. Actually starting to open her mouth now and swallow some! Phew! light at the end of the tunnel.

I've now caught DD1 and DHs chesty cough so been feeling a bit rough. Thankfully my Mum was here to help at the weekend.

Anyway, best go and hang the washing out .

Happy Monday everyone!
