new thread everyone!

babylove I really don't think not rolling should be a concern, all babies do things at sifferent rates. My friend's DS still isn't walking at 18 months...she's not worried.

What specialist are you seeing...is it vascular?

notsoseriousanymore · 22/10/2008 19:56

Agree totally with LM.

My DSD2 didn't barely speak until well over 3YO, and what she did say was pretty unintelligble, but she is a perfectly normal, happy, clever 10YO now.

FWIW, DS only rolls from his front to his back (HATES tummy time) but never from his back to his front - gets half way and then changes his mind. I'm not worried about it (only that it's obvious he knows his own mind and this may mean he's really stubborn later on!! haha!!)

DS and I have been pouring over old photo albums tonight - I used to be so THIN!!! I need to go on a diet.. Oh if only there were a diet to make you YOUNG again....

Mitchell81 · 22/10/2008 20:04

Babylove: DS1 only rolled after 6 months, so don't worry. The age range for developmental stuff ie rolling, sitting, walking, talking is huge and varies over months.

I can also recommend flicks booties, DD has a pair and they are so warm and cute. I have mentioned before but baby Gap socks stay on babies feet.

babylove21 · 22/10/2008 21:56

I have Raynauds but it only affects my fingers and they go white/blue not red. well not like my dd's hand anyway, i've never seen anything like it, it just goes lobster red and very hot. The appt is with i assume a paediatrician as it says the dr's name followed by ( paediatrics). I was more worried cause the gp that refered her wants tosee her again before the hospital appt since the hv went to see her, any idea why that would be?
I thought maybe the rolling well lack of, but you ladies are right, i have looked on another site and some babies crawl and sit before they roll.
Thanks for all your reassurance, its really appreciated.
Been to look at those booties, they are very cute. Anyone been to the babyshow before?

baiyu · 23/10/2008 00:07

Nssa I'll do the edinburgh moonwalk!

LM74 how scary! well done you for coping, glad all ok now. I would totally panic I'm sure despite having done masses of first aid training and childcare, with DS I'd be useless!

So many posts, can't keep up, sorry. Who ever asked about baby cinema - it's brilliant! Usually cheap, good films, baby friendly. I go to two, one is £2, the other is £3 with free coffee, fantastic!

Oh and yes I remember mumbles, how can we track her down?!

All's well here. I've become an Usborne books organiser, just been told off about posting about this elsewhere on MN but if you want any info then e-mail me at [email protected]

Sorry for all those with lazy DH and DP's. Mine isn't lazy but I haven't any time to myself in a very very long time. He's studying so so hard so I feel bad asking him to take DS.

We're off to Whitby tomorrow with 2 childless couples, worried it'll be a total nightmare! Hopefully I'll manage some relaxation, I've never been so looking forward to it. It's just changing trains, carseats, buggies, carrycots, new places...just being a big wuss!

Night all x

Mocat · 23/10/2008 10:24

babylove21 I imagine that your HV has just chased up the GP to say 'Are you happy with this?' kind of thing. My HV would regularly speak to our GP and make sure everyone is aware of baby. Babies and young families are the realm of the HV so they can be on top of everything, whereas your GP sees everyone for everything. Thinking of you; it's hard not to worry.

Ok, last night Mo caught a mouse in our house. Mo is the cat by the way - hence Mocat. What do I do now? I remember some of you had mice a few months ago - how did you get rid of them or are they paying board and lodgings by now? Or maye the mums who don't post anymore have infact been eaten by their mice .

luckymummy74 · 23/10/2008 10:26

babylove I really don't know why the GP wants to see your lo again before the hospital appt, I don't see the point as generally speaking GPs aren't specialists, they are general practitioners and their job is often just being able to refer you on to the specialists, so I don't see the point of you seeing him again...the only I can think of is for him to expedite your appt (bump you up the waiting list) if he feels the problem has got worse??

DD2 has her hospital appt today for her red-eye/not red-eye thing (retinoblastoma). Hopefully nothing to worry about but just getting it checked out. Fingers crossed.

babylove21 · 23/10/2008 12:41

mocat i spoke with a friend on the phone today and she seemed to think the same as you. But not long to wait for the 3rd nov and she see's gp on fri now.

How do you know that Mo caught the mouse inside and not outside? remember they love bringing them home lol.
We had mice, used a classic sprung mouse trap with chocolate as the bait. Used choccy because they were getting in the kitchen cupboard and eating my chocolate
Decided against poison cause didnt want to think it would be rotting somewhere in the house, yuck. mice have no respect for the dead. bait had gone, but mouse was dead in trap........ so his friend must have sat eating the choc while he was dead in the trap eeewww. left trap out again and caught 2nd one. left trap in place for a futher 3 days and no more. I add my food cupboard had been emptied for the purpose. But living in the country this time of year rodents do like to find somewhere warm for the winter.
luckymummy good luck with your dd appt today.

notsoseriousanymore · 23/10/2008 13:39

LM Good luck with the appt. I had the same thing with DS... I ended up taking him to his Paed to have it checked out and it was absolutely fine, but you are right, it's better to have it checked.

Mocat sorry to hear about your mouse... We have a bit of a spider problem in our new house - I think because it has an intergral garage which is quite warm so it's a nice place for them to go when it's cold outside. Sorry - that's no help with help with the mice, though, is it???

Baiyu - Excellent... I'll keep an eye out for when the date is confirmed. I have applied fro the London moonwalk, but not sure when I'll hear back!!

I'm really enjoying our new house and area - it's so sociable and I've met so many lovely mums!! I've been to two coffee mornings + a choc-dog-walk-fest (two choc labs and two babies!!) and tomorrow I have coffee and lunch!!

Just got to hope DH is in a better mood this week. THings seem to have calmed down, so fingers crossed!!!

I'm off to see if I can find a baby cinema in this area!!

thefortbuilder · 23/10/2008 13:41

aaah thanks ladies for the lovely reviews of my booties - get thee onto the reviews section!!!!

will be doing a MN competition later on in November so be sure to enter then although once i get the website sorted there will be a MN discount i reckon, just in time for christmas shopping!

babylove i imagine your HV has done what most HVs do and gone totally over the top at the gp so put the fear of god into him which is why he wants to see your lo before the appointment. no advice though - ask me about tiny prem babies and i'm a font of knowledge there though

we had mice and had to resort to glue traps as they outwitted us with everything else but we had a strange smell before we went away on holiday in the bathroom, flushed the drains and it seemed to go but then on our return a problem with flies (yuk yuk yuk) which has been sorted now, but no more mice so we think that one died under the floorboards before we went away and that it was the last one. but only the glue traps really worked imo it was hoddible having to deal with them squeaking away stuck to it - you have to made of stone for a few minutes.

anyway, still trying to put together my mammoth holiday report so will be back!!

OP posts:
Mocat · 23/10/2008 14:17

Thanks for the advice ladies!! babylove21 I remember laughing at your mercinary mice stories here at the time!! Mo had been in all evening staring at a skirting board which the mice must live behind. Result, Mo!! DH thinks sprung traps might hurt his fingers late at night when he's raiding it for the chocolate!!

nssa I can relate to the spider prob too. Until last week we were getting one or two ENORMOUS spiders running round the house. I kept putting them out only to find them in again the next evening. One had seven legs and it always turned up in DD's bedroom - that was obviously its room!!! The cold must have finally killed them as we found one dead under a radiator last week; it looked like an electricity pylon that had collapsed and buckled. Now it's mice.

macaco · 23/10/2008 14:37

Hello ladies..sorry to hear about mice, no suggestions...just be thankful...here in the summer it's cockroaches. eeeuggh.

Well, I went out for the meal and had a lovely time and DS very kindly slept til 8am the next morning so I feel ok.

Went to visit the grandparents this morning but by the time we got there it was nap time really (he's a bit all over the place at the mo) so he just screamed and wailed the whole time. Then MIL got all upset...he doesn't know me, oh let me hold him, I can't stand it when he cries etc etc. The problem is he won't calm down or sleep int he pushchair or be rocked to sleep, it's cot or hysteria. So after a very stressful hour or so we put him in the car and came home

What on earth is the moonwalk, michael jackson apart?

notsoseriousanymore · 23/10/2008 14:55

This is the Moonwalk.

The site is down at the moment (almost certainly too many people trying to access it!!

It is SUCH good fun and (sorry, don't mean to offend anyone) a REAL challenge... These 5K sponsored walks drive me mad - I walk further than that every morning with the dog!!! But, 26.2 miles really makes you work!!!

It does require some training (though the girl I did it with the first year, did it at 6 DAYS notice!!!) she is quite fit though!!!

Sorry about your naff morning... I'm off to see my parents next week which I am not wholely looking forward to. I am taking the train, and my mum is already stressing that I won't make it with DS and DDog... FFS! She wants to drive down to collect me!!! I am not 13!!!! ANd I couldn't stand a few hours of her driving! (though I must appreciate that she has no points on her licence and I have 6)

Oh, one day DS will be saying all the same things about me!

monkeysmama · 23/10/2008 22:19

Hey ladies

I was just searching for something and our ante natal thread came up. It made me smile to read some of the posts & to think our LOs are now hurtling towards the 6 month mark.

Babylove & LM74 - Hope your LOs are both okay. Babylove you must be really worried - I don't have anything helpful to say but am thinking of you.

On a much more flippant note - what change bags do you have and what do you think of them? I have ripped mine (in a fit of rage ) and need a new one which actually fits some stuff in and doesn't get stuck on the pram (which is still getting stuck on all public transport and some narrow streets!)

Have I mentioned dd's new bedtime routine? Am exhausted & about to hit the sack so won't go all through it but the past two nights she has been a bit better. At this stage a bit better is better than nothing though. I am so tired I look grey.

Okay - night ladies.

gingerwench · 24/10/2008 09:53

i have a bababing satchel chosen so that DH would feel at home with it as me. However I am thinking of getting something more stylish now that I know what I NEED to take with me and what is unnecessary (e.g. I have a DS who refuses a bottle so I don't need bottle carrier). I like the bababing satchel because the changing mat comes away and is nicely padded and a good size so we've happily changed DS in all sorts of places. I may just get a nice big handbag that will hold the bababing change mat rather than a new change bag

luckymummy74 · 24/10/2008 12:20

Morning all

Just to let you know, we got on OK at the hospital yesterday. DD2 was poked and proded by 3 different people but the good news is she doesn't have retinoblastoma (a tumour behind the eye) but she does have some underdeveloped blood vessels in her eyes, which should resolve, but they want to see her again in 6 months.

She was as good as gold, despite being held down by me, having her head held still and her eyes held forced open while the consultant shone a bright light in them for what was about 2 mins on each eye....she screamed the place down but was fine as soon as he stopped. I wanted him to be thorough (obviously) but I was so close to saying 'hurry up FFS!!!'.

thefortbuilder · 24/10/2008 13:59

hi LM74 i have something similar with the coating o nthe nerves at the back of my eyes which means you can see the nerves on the back of the eyeball which is apparently really rare... so not the same really at all - but glad dd2 is ok

not much else to say really - nappy bags - we have a little fold up change mat that you can fit bags, nappies and wipes in (and a spare pair of pants for ds1) and that's it really - it goes under the buggy with a change of clothes and a spare muslin or in my bag (have a few of those nylon longchamp bags) with a bottle. we did have a lovely cath kidston change bag for ds1 and stuffed it full of all manner of cr*p that we thought we needed and blatantly didn't! so poor ds2 just gets by!

OP posts:
notsoseriousanymore · 24/10/2008 17:53

Ohh... changing bags!!! I'm onto my third!!!

i started out with a HUGE one (it had EVERYTHING from bottle warmers to full size change mats and a kitchen sink

I then got a 'Kepp calm and carry on' one which looked great but, to be honest, was of dubious quality so started looking tatty quite soon.

I now use a leather shoulder bag, which I'm quite happy with... I carry nappies, bags, wipes, disposable change mat, a spare vest and sleepsuit, hat and shoes. More recently, I've added a little blanket and I do have a little first aid kit too.... ANd bottles of course....

It took me a while to get (and feel!) organised though!!

Has anyone else's baby not asked for food? DS, yesterday and today, hasn't once cried for food, but will eat a full 210mls when it's offered. THis is such a change, as he has been screaming the place down when hungry... He's still eating well, his nappies are normal, he's energetic (into everything!) but I'm having to offer food, IYSWIM... I'm sure that this is a PFB thing, but has anyone had anything similar?

Hope you all have lovely weekends!!

macaco · 24/10/2008 18:38

NSSA No idea. Maybe teeth or he's engrossed in rolling around?
I have the change bag that came with my Jané travel system. I carry nappies, wipes bottle etc in it and just stick my purse and mobile in it too.
Back to "things I like about motherhood".....
Bedtime. I Love the whole bedtime, bath, lullabies routine and miss it the 2 days I'm at work. When they laugh at something you do. Tonight putting DS to bed he made a funny noise that made me laugh, which made him giggle so we were both giggling away, it was lovely.
I always thought I'd want to keep working at least PT, but I really don't. I'm stuck with PT til June now and then hopefully work from home but I would LOVE to be a housewife.

monkeysmama · 24/10/2008 19:08

LM - glad your LO's okay. Fingers crossed Babylove will get the all clear too.

NSSA - I have had the same with dd. Indeed I thought a few hours ago "I'll have to ask if anyone else on MN has noticed the same". It's not that she doesn't want food because she'll eat loads when I remind her or when she gives me a cuddle and smells my boobs - but she's her need for food seems to have waned. I mentioned it to the HV on Monday and she suggested it's probably teething related (though I am started to doubt that everything can be teething related )

Thanks for the chaning bags posts - keep suggestions coming. I am quite organised but the bag that came with our Quinny's just not big enough and I want something that hangs over the pram....

So, it's Friday evening. I'd always go out with my team for a few drinks after work, then meet dp somewhere in the West End for food and occasionally a club. How long ago those days seem now! DP's out tonight, dd has gone down, I've done all the tidying away and I am sat listening to music, MNing with a glass of wine, bowl of olives and plate of salami!I will smell nice later.

We have one of my very close friends and his wife coming over to babysit tomorrow evening for a few hours. DP & I haven't been anywhere together without dd since she was born so it'll be strange. He is actually trying to get me to call my friends off because he doesn't think they know dd well enough if she wakes up. But my friend sees her every week - more than anyone but my mum & she'll be in bed so my feeling is it'll be fine and we'll only be ten minutes walk away!

"Things I like about motherhood" - the sheer wonder on their faces when they see something new. When my darling girl sees other kids and squeaks to get their attention & then beams at them - often only to be ignored by the other LO. It melts my heart. I love the little look she gives me when she wants reassurance too. I have 3 little sisters so we've always had lots of toys in our house. One of them is this red Elmo thing that laughs and rolls over. I've always found it a bit scary but I tried dd with it yesterday and she was at first stunned and looked at me. As soon as I smiled & nodded "it's fun!" she burst out laughing and tried to cuddle him. I love it! I also love saying "my daughter". I waited so long for this and I say it at every available opportunity - "I am her mum"! . What a nice little thread whoever thought of it - it's made me smile!

Have a good evening everyone & happy weekends.

MM

monkeysmama · 24/10/2008 19:11

P.S Macaco - me too on the work front. I've just told them I'm not going back until May 2009 but am already dreading it. Right now I now can't think of anything I'd like more than to stay home with my baby. As what would probably be termed a feminist I am a tad surprised by how I feel but I suppose that's what it is all about - having the choice to do what we want. MM

luckymummy74 · 24/10/2008 19:34

NSSA don't worry !!! DS not asking for food is fine....both my DDs have never been very hungry babies/children. I literally feed them every four hours cos I know that they need to eat! Neither of them have ever cried for food, even when they were weeks old. DD1 would go 6 hoours between feeds if I let her and DD2 very similar. It is really nothing to worry about .

DD2 is 6 months next week and she doesn't seem bothered about food yet (I haven't tried yet). She has four 8oz bottles a day, every 4 hours (roughly) and sleeps 6:30pm til 7am...obviously not very hungry!

I'm such a cheapskate, my changebag is the one you get free with the boots parenting club! I had a mamas and papas rucksack with DD1, thinking it would be easier to have it on my back but never actually did this and the stuff was always a bit hard to 'organise' within the bag, IYSWIM. I have pondered getting a nice stylish one, but tbh, the freebie one is perfect for me! It's just big enough, has a space for bottle, portable changemat, 2 small pockets at the front for my mobile/purse/keys.

I can vouch that NSSA did have a rather large changebag initially . I thought she was staying the whole weekend . No offence NSSA .

luckymummy74 · 24/10/2008 19:37

monkeysmama Have a lovely evening tonight with your olives and more so with DH tomorrow, I'm sure your DD will be fine. (not that it's you who needs convincing!).

notsoseriousanymore · 24/10/2008 19:56

Thanks guys!! You have made me feel a million times better. I am loving our evening routine now.. We walk Doof, then play, then bath, story, bottle and bed - and he snuggles down straight away!!! ]

Things I love about motherhood: The way he smiles at me when he sees me when he wakes up, the way he gets excited when he sees his carrier (means dog walk!!), the way he cuddles me when I'm feeding him, the way he laughs when I kiss his head, his sheer excitement at having a bath, the way he sighs as he's starting to sleep... Ahh... I love everything about him. It's the pure innocence.... YOu know, later on, when he's being a little monkey and I know he's pressing buttons, I'll still love him with every fibre of my being, but it won't be the same. Right now, he never tries to wind me up (even when he winds me up really well and I'm in tears, YKWIM) he's so pleased, and inquisitive and happy... I don't know what I did before I had him!!!!

Sadly, DH doesn't appear to be in an appreciably better mood this weeknd.

monkeysmama · 24/10/2008 20:00

Oh no NSSA. I was going to put on the bottom of my post earlier that I hope you had a better weekend than last one. Fingers crossed it gets better. MM
