July 2008 - Now our babies are arriving let's have a thread to talk about them...

Hi ladies
I know there are many of us still to pop but thought it would be nice to start a thread that we can come to once the LO's are here

Abbie is 4 weeks and 3 days old today and my due date isn't here yet

Abbie is doing great - eating and sleeping and very content. The feeding was hard going at first as it is very frequent with her being early but I think you actually get used to being tired

Someone (sorry can't remember who) was talking about bottle and bf together and nipple confusion. Well all the times I have bf I have done so exclusively even when it was very difficult - I am stubborn As Abbie was early and lost a good bit of weight the mw advised topping her up with ebm through a syringe. This was tough as I was bf then trying to express only to bf 1 hour later - so I gave her formula to top up. Giving her the milk in a syringe became difficult as they tended to spurt the milk too quickly at times. So I gave her a bottle to top up( Tommee Tippee - closer to nature) and it was great!!

I bf her all day and then top up after bf at night to get a bit longer sleep - it's working - she is putting on weight and no nipple confusion

sorry for huge post - hope you will all come over and join me!!!!!

Hi all

Welcome Nobby and I second what the others say about co-sleeping. I did it with dd2, and she went into her own cot at about 10 months without any real problem. She always started the night in her own carrycot/cot anyway, and moved into our bed through the night. As she dropped night feeds, it got easier to return her to her own bed after feeding and she gradually stopped co-sleeping. Am planning the same strategy with dd3 (poor dd1 didn't get to co-sleep as I listened to all the people who told me I would spoil her ).

CilC, Orlaith was fed hourly when she was first in SCBU, as she couldn't keep large volumes down. I couldn't express enough colostrum for her, as they were pushing her fluid load to try and flush out the bili, so she had some EBM and some formula (as well as a dextrose drip). Once my milk came in, I could usually manage to get enough for her feeds expressing 2 hourly. Managed to give myself 'sucking blisters' on one nipple with that blardy electric pump - ouch!

The sleeping in this house is a bit hit or miss - get some nights with a nice long 3-4 stretch then other nights with no more than 2 hours at any one time. Not helped by dd2 getting up at 3am the last two nights to go to the toilet, then refusing to go back to her own bed again. DH has resorted to getting into her bed with her both times, as we do not want her in the same bed as the baby. And, as we have not resumed relations yet, this is not really a problem for us to be in separate beds . Like SK, still have some bleeding so want all that cleared up first. Plus, not a big fan of milk leakage whilst getting jiggy, and that seems almost inevitable at this point in time (sorry if TMI).

Disneystar, glad your sounding so much better, and Sam sounds like a little star. Hope to all goes well with DH away in God's own country this week

Oh, got to go, boobs required! Bye

isaidno · 11/08/2008 17:14

hello everyone - I have read the thread - but can't remember what everyone has said!

I've been at my parents for a few days and Poppy has been grumpy and unsettled most of the time. Today we got back home and she has been sleeping like an angel all day - just waking up for a drop of milk every couple of hours. I think she has been protesting about wearing pampers; she's back in the soft snuggly washable nappies now.

Disney - am at your over eventful life! Glad to hear Sam is getting strong and healthy.

Welcome nobby, and other new people - all welcome here

Disney-
Glad things are going well and Sam is progressing so well

NobbyD-
Welcome to the tread. The 12th was MEANT to be my due date, but Abigail was forcefully evicted on the 24th!

All of you with previous DC- Hats off to you all! Sounds like you are all very busy and have your hands full!

Jodie-
Relations! No chance!
I was cut and had a 3rd degree tear so in no rush for any of that. DH and i did chat about it the other day when the MW told me if was most fertile now and to be careful. Thankfully DH said he didnt want to try anything untill after my 3mth check at the hospital.

hubarbspong-
What a lovely thought and momento of LO's birth.
Glad Skylar is doing well.

mummy2bsoon-
Your link didnt work?

re sleeping-
Abigail is another one who will have good nights and bad.
Some nights she will sleep for 3/4 sometimes even 5 hours between feeds... othernights it will be 2 hours and she will be wide awake for a few hours after a feed with no chance of getting her off to sleep.

Took Abigail into work today to meet my colleagues. She had plenty of cuddles!

Hope everyone had a good day

libralady · 11/08/2008 19:36

Libra I'm using Woodwards Gripe Water. Have tried Boots own which is apple flavoured and although it works better in getting up L's wind, he is more sicky with it. Don't know if this is anything to do with the ingredients that may not agree with him. HTH

JODIEhadababy · 11/08/2008 20:13

Evening all,

Well both boys in bed and DH at the driving range, so nice and peaceful here (for a little while anyway!)

I'm really struggling with not smokng at the moment, it's harder than I thought, it hasn't bothered me at all throughout pregnancy, and the smell used to really make me gag, but now it's so hard..... Anyone else a smoker?

Mummy2besoon, I couldn't get that link to work. What is it? I'm curious now...

It's my birthday on Friday, and I have no idea what to get DH to buy me? Can't have clothes as I'm 'in between' sizes and MIL has bought me a day pass at a spa, Hoar Cross Hall, and my friend is a therapist and is doing me a hot stone massage for free on Saturday so any ideas ladies???????

disneystar · 11/08/2008 20:14

ive used woodwards for years now i guess the old ones are the good ones
i had a lady ask me if sams origin was greek or italian i get that a lot i guess its cos hes so black hair pale skin and dark blue eyes because of his facial looks he has very slanty eyes very cute i think though

well so far so good today i even went out sams been an angel but wait till tonight il sit up for 4 hours like every night

sk im with you on whatever is better for you eg co sleeping cuddling whenever
you cant spoil a baby they need to be near you sam loves being in my arms just looking at me or i sleep holding his hand
i need to keep my sanity and routines can be established a little later on plenty of time for that i think
i sing to sam a lot as he cant hear very well he puts his hands on my chest when we cuddle and it relaxes him we have to have lots of skin contact and touching he seems to flinch an awful lot if alone
basically i go with the flow we eat when i get time i sleep when i can
anyway of to wake him now
i spend all this time wanting him to sleep now i wake him in the hope he will be tired later and sleep tonight
fat chance of that though im gonna be like a zombie by the time dh comes home friday

disneystar · 11/08/2008 20:15

also im sorry i didnt say hi to nobby

hi nobby welcome to the thread

disneystar · 11/08/2008 21:09

jodie i gave up smoking as soon as i knew i was pg and like you i hated the smell
but lately the cravings are real bad again
its very hard even tonight as i guess i associate relaxing with going outside for cigarette
i was a 10 a day person before and i always smoked outside my kids never knew i never smoked in front of them so i didnt get much chance
but yeah id like one right now its only the fact ive gone without since november last year that makes me think c,mon you can do it

JODIEhadababy · 11/08/2008 21:17

I'm the same Disney... As soon as that line appeared on the stick I didn't have another puff, so that was November too, Isn't it funny... Horrible stinky things. Same as you I (nor DH) smoked in the house and only when DS was napping, or out....

Trespass · 11/08/2008 21:39

ahh, finally managed to come on here and catch up with you all....I've missed you lol!! off to bf and have a sleep, catch up better tomorrow (only 19 threads!!). I've missed you guys

ponto · 11/08/2008 22:33

Having a good evening sleep-wise here so finally getting a moment to post. Have been having terrible problems settling Bryony in the evenings, she has been screaming on and off between 7 and 10pm for the last 5 days, it has been very stressful. She is fine during the day, feeding, having a short awake time then sleeping but then evening comes and she changes into a screaming demon. I think it's wind, but I don't seem to be able to get her to burp and she seems to be straining to poo but nothing comes out. Took the advice of others on this thread tonight and gave her some gripe water and she has been asleep since 7pm. I am just wondering whether to try to feed her now before I go to bed or wait for her to wake by herself. I am just hoping that the screaming doesn't now shift to the middle of the night rather than the evening.

I agree with what everyone has said about co-sleeping and cuddling - I was very anti it with dd1 as I didn't want to get the wrong sleep associations but now I think I had just read too many books and it's better to just go with my own instincts. Bryony starts the evening in her recliner chair (I still haven't managed to get her to sleep in her crib after 3 weeks!) then comes into bed with me when she wakes and feeds while I go back to sleep. I am really enjoying all the cuddles as I think this is going to be my last baby.

Mummy2bsoon, was it you who had worries about your baby's health while you were pregnant? Is that all resolved now?

purplejennyrose · 11/08/2008 22:37

Welcome Nobby! Hope your LO settles down soon - it's tough isn't it! Hope everyone else doing OK and had nice day today - shame about dreadful weather.
Well , my LO bit more settled - i know it's newborn normal not to sleep, just felt like s'thing was not quite right IYSWIM. Did a bit of research and watched her feeds closely and I decided she was getting flooded with foremilk when she latched on - coughing and spluttering everywhere - and then feeding for just a few minutes - so presumably never getting to the hindmilk properly, so not settling and waking loads. Tried putting her back on same side repeatedly and expressing bit of foremilk before feed, and she is much more settled and even went 4.5 hours last night! Will wait and see tonight - but has been settled today. Sometimes b/feeding feels like detective work...
Oh, for anyone who has ever despaired of a health visitor...
Went to get Florence weighed today, out of curiosity more than anything. HV weighs her 10lb 10 oz - I say yay well done girl! HV then shows me red book chart and says, 'look she's dropped a centile - she's dipped from 50th to 25th - you must bring her back in 3 weeks to monitor...oh she hasn't even regained her birth centile [75th].'
I was a bit confused as I was thinking 'but she's put on 1 lb 10oz in 2 weeks - is that not good?? Did my smile sweetly and ignore the silly woman face...
Get home, check the book and bl**dy HV has marked her down as 9 weeks old, not 5 weeks!!
She has actually jumped up to the 75th centile - not that I really care anyway, but another mother could have been worried by that - I just think HVs have such power in a way to pressurize and worry mums, they shouldn't make silly mistakes like that.
Sorry rant (and very long post!) over! Off to catch some more sleep while my chubby baby snoozes...!

libralady · 12/08/2008 08:37

jodie I'm with you on the smoking front. Unfortunately I have relapsed due to the crappy time I had with DH being away and the traumatic time I had with Luke's tongue tie etc. Doesn't help that DH smokes. Thought I'd cracked it this time as like you didn;t want one during pregnancy even through the chaos that was our holiday.
We've never smoked in the house or car and whereas I was on 12-15 a day pre-pregnancy, I'm on about 5 a day now. It's annoying as I know I can kick it, but with all the stresses at the moment, it is my release. Didn't help when the HV said I was borderline PND the otherwise. My blood was boiling.

mummy2bsoon · 12/08/2008 10:24

yeh it was my baby health, she doesnt have talpies, nor she is downs... but she does have the kidney problem, the silly hospitals dont knw what they are doing, concerned and worried about her...but she seems to be growing and peeing just fine!
the link was a fisher price rocker, have been thinking of getting one.

minipinkscottish · 12/08/2008 10:27

hi guys
welcome nobby and nice to hear from you tresspass xx

midwife sed take saptone

sweetkitty · 12/08/2008 12:31

hi ladies typing one handed well stupid HV came in without scales so no weight, she told me to rest when I can and get some time to myself as apparently having 3 young children is hard work!

Went to the hospital to have B's hearing checked which was all fine, oh what fun with the 3 of them though.

Mummy2bsoon - I have a Fisher Price swing thing it's the carry one with lights and songs (don't know if they still sell it) anyway it's great gives you 10 mins to get on with things. Somtimes B falls asleep in it too.

trespass - good to hear from you

purplejenny - sounds like you may have cracked it you are right about BFing it is hard to know everything is going as it should. I think thats why so many people give up and I don't blame them it's hard to trust your body sometimes. I know I sometimes waiver towards a bottle of formula especially as she is unsettled in the evenings. Love your HV as well

Anyway better be off and make some lunch B is in her swing quite happy for a bit.

NobbyD · 12/08/2008 12:41

Afternoon all,

Thanks for all the advice guys - you are great!

Was a bad night last night as Connor woke pretty much every hour again - didnt even get the 4 hour we sometimes do. So no need to say that am knackered now.

So I woke up saying I would get into some kind of day routine so he knows its night when it comes. He's down for a lunchtime nap now but instead of me bringing the moses basket down into the living room where I can keep an eye on him I am letting him sleep upstairs so he can get to learn that bedroom is for sleeping!

re co-sleeping. did have Connor on my chest for the last hour of this morning (6am - 7am) as he just wouldn't settle. It is lovely having him on my chest for cuddles - I just get paranoid that I will go into a deep sleep and forget he is there and roll over or something

pigleychez Connor was actually early - he was due on the 23rd. Didn't even know I was in labour when it happened as was convinced it was practice. Then when the hosp told me I was 9cm on arrival I started to panic as I wasn't ready to have him then!!!

Also, another question: Connor hasn't pooed for over 24 hours now - should I worry??

Kaz1967 · 12/08/2008 13:23

Kez and I co sleep too and have good nights and bad nights normally it is 3-4 hours occasional night with 5-6 then it's 2 hourly for a couple of nights

mummy2bsoon · 12/08/2008 13:29

r.e co cleeping, i hav been with my baby, but dh wants the bed back, so its gonna b tryin the moses tonite...not lookin forward to it.

everyone filled his head with rubbish...

he wants to swaddle her too rolls eyes
i dnt wana do that...dnt wana argue with him either.

gillythekid · 12/08/2008 13:47

Hope everyone is well, just don't get time to read everything! Nate is doing well. I'm going to bed at 10.30pm and DH is giving the expressed breast milk at 11 and I'm waking to give a feed at 3am but realise that it's better from a bottle too as he fusses too much on the breast.
He's really cranky today, think it might be the dreaded growth spurt.
All you smokers, I was a 30 a day girl who LOVED my fags. I read the Alan Carr EASYWAY book and haven't smoked for nearly 5 years and have never missed it one bit. If you want to stop it'll work but if you feel like you ought to stop then it's worth waiting till you're sick of it! Good luck.

disneystar · 12/08/2008 14:14

mummy2bsoon i have the fisher price rainforest cradle swing its great and sam loves it
he got bought a baby gym take along one very soft and big bold blues and reds for him to see im not a believer in pastels its us parents who like them not the babies the bolder the better for them
also sometimes sam likes to be swaddles but others he likes to what we call it free his feet bare and lie how he wants to

ive got him to have his feeds between 6am 8am

2 oz mid morning

6 oz lunchtime
60z tea time
then his bath and massage and play
this is his usually grumpy time till 10 ish
another 6oz bottle then sleep

wake up 2am 60z feed
co sleep then till 6am feed then im up
im hoping to try to keep him kinda to this as in a few weeks i have the school run to do
4 to drop of 3 different schools
cant wait

disneystar · 12/08/2008 14:17

just a thought ladies

samuel has been quite cranky in the past few days so i got a huge pillow wedged it it his pram and lied him on top

do you know he loves it sleeps for hours
