July 2008 - Now our babies are arriving let's have a thread to talk about them...

1000 replies

minipinkscottish · 14/07/2008 17:04

Hi ladies
I know there are many of us still to pop but thought it would be nice to start a thread that we can come to once the LO's are here

Abbie is 4 weeks and 3 days old today and my due date isn't here yet

Abbie is doing great - eating and sleeping and very content. The feeding was hard going at first as it is very frequent with her being early but I think you actually get used to being tired

Someone (sorry can't remember who) was talking about bottle and bf together and nipple confusion. Well all the times I have bf I have done so exclusively even when it was very difficult - I am stubborn As Abbie was early and lost a good bit of weight the mw advised topping her up with ebm through a syringe. This was tough as I was bf then trying to express only to bf 1 hour later - so I gave her formula to top up. Giving her the milk in a syringe became difficult as they tended to spurt the milk too quickly at times. So I gave her a bottle to top up( Tommee Tippee - closer to nature) and it was great!!

I bf her all day and then top up after bf at night to get a bit longer sleep - it's working - she is putting on weight and no nipple confusion

sorry for huge post - hope you will all come over and join me!!!!!

libra - Poppy senses whenever I lift a fork to my mouth. I am constantly eating dinner one handed with my tits out at the table!

She is also developing a sensitivity to altitude - crying if I sit down with her, fine if I stand back up.

And when I put her in the sling she likes to do a little puke down my cleavage.

Libra1975 · 29/07/2008 16:02

lol isaidno, I must admit I am usual quite body shy and I think my DH has seen my breasts more in the last 2 weeks than he had in the 6 preceeding years

I wonder what it is about sitting down vs standing up - apart from just taking the mickey out of mummy

sweetkitty · 29/07/2008 16:27

I have cut up all my dinner in advance before so I can eat it with just a fork and on hand before. Tits out at dinner table is normal here better than screaming baby.

What is it with the altitude thing?

isaidno - on the subject of slings what one have you got, was it you that had the oh what was it again closer Claire Stott one or am I going mad? I have a Corry from freedom slings, she seemed to like it but it killed my back and she felt too squashed up and low down, I'm wondering if a wrap would be better?

isaidno · 29/07/2008 16:32

I do have the close baby carrier and I love it.
Can only compare it to a baby bjorn which I found killed my back.
The close one spreads weight very evenly and dd feels very secure. I can walk quite far with ease. She loves it. Of course Poppy is only 9lbs at the mo, but I think it will still be better than the bjorn as she grows.
The only slight prob is that I am only 5 ft so the excess material hangs nearly to my ankles. I have to tie it around me!

Peanut73 · 29/07/2008 17:06

sk - i have the Close sling too. It's great. Gets a bit hot if it's hot outside due to all the material. isaidno - agree re the excess material... what's with that?

sweetkitty · 29/07/2008 17:28

oh will have to have a look at them then (DP will kill me another sling) I have a baby bjorn too and the coory and carry here is anyone is interested coory used it with DD2 as well and couldn't get on with it

I'm only 5'4 but have small shoulders and arms maybe thats the problem I don't know, ideally I want something I could wear in the car then pop baby in and out for the nursery run IYSWIM so quickly put baby from car seat to sling drop older ones off then back in car seat again.

isaidno · 29/07/2008 17:42

that's what I mostly use mine for SK - school run / quick trip to postbox etc

minipinkscottish · 29/07/2008 20:40

SK lol at tits out at dinner table xx I also cut food up before I try to eat and also usually end up doing it one handed

Please can someone do a link to the sling you are discussing...I bought one yesterday and it is hopeless...I am 5 foot 1 and even with the strap at the shortest it was hanging way too low I'm returning tomorrow.

OP posts:
isaidno · 29/07/2008 21:39

here is the close baby carrier. You can buy it online for about £40 - just google and lots of sites will come up.

ButterflyMcQueen · 29/07/2008 21:57

just wrote huge post and lost it grrr

put pic of baby on facebook - hope it works!

purplejennyrose · 29/07/2008 22:07

ooh, I have just got a close carrier and we love it! Had a coory and carry with dd1 and couldn't get on with it at all...
Yesterday we all 4 went for a walk in the park with me carrying Florence in the close sling. Bit of a disaster - there was no ice cream van (had promised dd1 a lolly) she fell over and skinned both knees and then we timed it perfectly to coincide with the most torrential downpour and thunder storm! Dh grabbed dd1 and ran back to car, I followed at a trot with Florence breastfeeding in the close carrier - frantically pulling all the spare material around her. She just closed her eyes tight and sucked...!
We then sat and dripped in the car for ages whilst a drain burst and a huge fountain of water burst up through the actual tarmac...
Flo loves the sling anyway, it is so snuggly and I find it very comfy.

sweetkitty · 29/07/2008 22:09

thanks isaidno will have a look I'm so bad at making decisions think what I was like with the pram situation

B has been so unsettled today she has just went down now poor wee darling, does anyone else get annoyed with the "is she a good baby then?" questions you get asked all the time? I suppose it's because people don't know what to say about a baby but she's 2 weeks old how can she not be "good" she's cannot be "bad" she's not not sleeping out of spite or manipulation I cannot spoil her or ruin her by picking her up all the time.

Anyway rant over!

Peanut73 · 29/07/2008 23:55

sk - hmmm, why do people make the most inane comments when you have a baby? And why is my baby suddenly public property? So far I have had a toothless old granny in Sainsburys tell me Charlie should have been wearing a hat (he was in the sling sweltering but we were in the freezer aisle), a lady in the street peer over into the pram and upon seeing a 1mm scratch on his face tell me I should have him wearing "little white mittens", and yesterday when we had to take Charlie in to the hospital with me while I had a follow-up appointment an orderly bent over his pram and tried to pull a blanket over him in 30deg heat! I must have 'First Time Mother' emblazened on my forehead. The thing is I really feel quite instinctual towards Charlie and know when he's hot, cold, hungry etc so it's really annoying. Wish I could say something to these people but I'm too bloody polite and I just smile at them...

pigley - Abigail sounds like she's doing really well. Keep up the good work and keep persevering too!

libra1975 - lol re boobs.

Well, Charlie had his 2 month jabs today. I looked away as he screamed as a needle went into his left then his right thigh. He has been amazing though today. I expected him to be grizzly all day but not at all. Hated seeing him cry out in pain though... that's the hardest thing I've seen so far.

Also - today he weighed in at 10lb 7oz Can you believe this is the same little boy who was 5lb 8oz nine weeks ago?!

Sorry if I missed anyone, I am doing this quickly... should be in bed...

Night night!
x

hubarbspong · 30/07/2008 11:04

Hi all, been a bit absent recently, I'm sure you are all going through the same.
What a rollercoaster ride the past two weeks have been. Our consultant decided to induce DW as we had got to 40+1 and due to her minor pv bleeds, they wanted to avoid her going into labour at home and possible abruption etc.
Booked into local hospital on the Friday, meds administered and the waiting began. Left her on the sunday night in the care of a brilliant midwife in Hillingdon. Monday morning at 7.30am I got a call, she was 5cm dilated, said I'd be up asap. 20 minutes later I was at hospital and she was 10cm!

Whisked down to the delivery suite, some pushing, but DD was a little tachy, they decided to 'get the team together', just in case of an emergency c section. Luckily that was not the case, ventouse was applied for 5 minutes, whoosh! Skylar entered the world. Purpley, riggley and absolutely beautiful. First apgar was 9/10, 5 minutes later she was 10/10. I was fortunate enough to get to hold her for half an hour or so while the placenta was delivered and DW sorted.
There really are no words to describe that moment and even now I still cannot believe it.
Two weeks later and my wee girl is 8 lb's. Bright, alert and loves grabbing fingers (and trying to eat them). DW tried very hard for the first week to BF, topping up with EBM and a little formula. Latching on was very difficult, so after long discussions with midwife and HV, we decided to bf. Not our first choice, but after seeing my gorgeous DW distressed and upset, we felt that that was the best way.
She feeds incredibly well, taking a good 50-60mls, and sleeping for a good 3 hours at a time.

Just wanted to say thankyou again to you all, immense support and very very thoughtful, you are all absolute stars.

The staff at Hillingdon were amazing, so supportive, informative and clinically coudl'nt put a step wrong, I would have no problem in reccommending them.

MINNIE1 · 30/07/2008 11:23

Hi all
Feel like i never get on this!!! Up the walls here with LOs. Leah is good at night but has been cross during the day for the last 2 days!! Really felt the presure of all 3 kids yesterday! Rang DP for help so he came home for an hour, and of course DD1 and 2 acted like the perfect kids! If he onlt seen then an hour b4 hand!

Piles are getting better, stiches are getting tighter and boobs are heading south!! O the joys of post natel...

SK
I got the Tomy carrier and its ok back feels the presure and baby looks lost in it. But it is handy. Dont think it would ideal for nursery run. How are you getting on with all 3 DDs?

Peanut73
You do as you see fit hun, Go with what you feel right, i think people cant help themselves. Mum does know best...

JODIEhadababy · 30/07/2008 11:47

Morning....

Well, firstly I am hugely relieved now as Sam has put on 12 oz's this week! Was getting worried as he hadn't put on any weight for 10 days (and had dropped an oz) so he is now 7lbs 10oz Yeah!

He is now going through his '3 week growth spurt' and boy don't my boobs know it! he is now feeding every 2 hours and 4 hours n the night the hungry devil! I too feel like all I do is get my norks out wherever, when ever! I now have no shame!

DS is feeling much better now too, got over his Chicken Pox fairly quickly and is now very spotty, but not too itchy! and he's slept properly for 2 nights, phew! Rumpel How's your DD?

We've got the Bush Baby sling, and it's great. DH used it for DS1 mainly for our long hikes round the peak district, but the 'holder' easily clips on and off the 'carry bit' IYKWIM here DH looked into it LOADS and deemed that the best one for our 'needs'

Sweetkitty I posted those sheets on Monday, let me know when you've got them. I hope they are OK!

CilC · 30/07/2008 11:52

Hi All
Just realised I have been on the ante thread and I thought I was on the post thread!

Loads to catch up on and here I was thinking I was doing so well!

pigleychez · 30/07/2008 12:56

What a lovely sunny day!

We plan a picnic in the park tomorow if its still nice

Midwife came this morning and did the heel prick test. Abigail was a star and didnt even flinch... and she had to prick her twice to get enough blood!

She was weighed too and since birth 6 days ago shes put on 5ozs! Shes now 7lbs 14oz. .... Porky baby!

Managed to get her to latch on a couple of times now using the nipple shields which has been fab ( but painfull!)
Feel abit like a cow with the constant expressing but i know its doing her good so i dont mind.

Having loads of visitors at the mo and little abigail is getting spoilt rotten!
Lots of people have given us money to put in her trust fund too.. Lucky thing is richer than her mummy and Daddy!

Been out and tested the new pram.. Its fab and i love using it... Its soo easy to stear and Abigail looks so happy in it

Hope everyone and bubbas are well.

TJuice · 30/07/2008 14:57

congrats hubarbspong!
sorry there was some drama but best wished to your family!

RUMPEL · 30/07/2008 19:56

H9i All,

HUBARB - good to hear from you pass on our love to Mrs Hubarb.

Went to register Calvin today in Dunblane. Takes blooming ages to get out the house with 2 never mind more. How do you guys with lots of kids manage? How do you get time to eat, wash, housework and pee FGS?!!!!

This wee lady came up and was ooing and ahhing over him and asked "if he was a good baby?" I said no he is a nightmare Well he is just now No sleep again last night he juts takes ages to feed, wind, puke then settle ARGGG!!! He wants to eat all the time and then pukes it up again. So tired that my breast milk is getting less instead of more so made a point of expressing as much as I could today - really hard trying to find the time and energy though.

JODIE - DD is feeling better now although she is 22 months this week and showing her defiant/aggressive side she is still spotty so was kept off nursery again today but they are gping to have her 2 days next week which will be good - she loves nursery and it will give me some time just with Calvin - I am very concious of not wanting to make her feel jealous etc.

PIGLEY - what pram did you get?

SWEETKITTY - did your P+T arrive yet?

Must go for a bath and relax now DH is home
Take care all.

TWINKLE has not been on for ages I hope she and her boys are okay - anyone know?

pigleychez · 30/07/2008 20:43

Rumpel-

This is my pram..
here

Its so easy to push, just glides along. Turns around corners easily and has a tight turning circle. Easy to push one handed.
Abigail is quite long and has plenty of room in the carrycot to lay flat and the seat faces both ways.

No complaints so far

sweetkitty · 30/07/2008 22:14

isaidno - cheers for doing the list so many babies now, we need to get the last few of us across to the other side now

rumpel - 2 thats easy try 3 stroppy little madams, no I remember crying after our first trip out with the two of them in the double buggy with cosytoes and raincovers and everything (it was January and peeing it down) I thought I would never leave the house again. No it does gets a lot better you get in sussed, how goes where and in what order and you learn to take just what you really need out with you.

Oh P&T did arrive last week and it is fab, once we got it all up DD2's head actually does fit right under the hood, I haven't had DD2 in it with B yet but pushing just B in it is a dream, it turns so well doesn't it, have just ordered a cocoon today thought I could get away without one but she just looked too exposed with just a blanket.

pigley - I remember your pram it looks really nice, bet it's lovely pushing a baby in it now is she going to be Abigail or Abbie? My Abigail is Abbie mostly but Abigail quite a bit too I love them both, she's an Abigail Sadie. Keep going with the expressing but offer her the boob first, your doing great.

jodie - yes thank you the sheets arrived today along with an added present of a little spider that had hitched a ride bless it it's going to be on for a shock it's colder up here and it will probably get beaten up by the "hard" Scottish spiders

Minnie - oh I know what you mean I didn't stop today had my first something to eat at 11am and by 2pm I still hadn't done any housework. It's utter chaos isn't it? The DDs were really naughty today as well. I haven't ventured out with all 3 on my own yet either, I do what I did the morning drop the older two off at nursery then take the baby off shopping (wimp)

hubarb - eventful birth story but you got there in the end thats all that matters, it's lovely to hear Dad going gaga over their daughters. Theres nothing more lovely than seeing a man being a true father, I see it every night when the DDs go nuts when Daddy comes home and he cuddles B and tells her hes missed her.

peanut - it's not a first time mum thing people just talk crap about babies I could write a book on the things I have been told, I used to get asked if DD1 and 2 were twins, DD1 is sitting up in the buggy with bunches in her hair talking and DD2 is a tiny baby! or one that anooys me "oh whats his name" when SHE is dressed all in pink. Now I get "oh you have your ahnds full" "when are you trying for a boy" 2oh your poor hubby"

Anyway B is still utterly adorable the spitting image of DD1 as a baby I will have to dig out and try and post 2 pictures of them side by side when I have time, she's more delicate featured and little girl looking that DD2 who was a little chubster bless her. Feeding wise couldn't be better although she is still really fast at feeding, tonight I moved when she was feeding and she let go and wow the let down she was getting so she must be taking in a fair few ozs, loads of poo nappies too. She tends to feed quick from one side then nod off so I wake her with a nappy change bad mummy and then put her on the other side which she takes a little from then goes back to sleep. Maybe she will feed for longer once she is older.

Sleep still all over the place but she is new so will let her off.

Oh I bought a Close sling today (haven't told DP yet!) hope I can get on with it better than the Coory.

sweetkitty · 30/07/2008 22:15

wow I talk a lot
