July 2008 - Now our babies are arriving let's have a thread to talk about them...

minipinkscottish · 14/07/2008 17:04

Hi ladies
I know there are many of us still to pop but thought it would be nice to start a thread that we can come to once the LO's are here

Abbie is 4 weeks and 3 days old today and my due date isn't here yet

Abbie is doing great - eating and sleeping and very content. The feeding was hard going at first as it is very frequent with her being early but I think you actually get used to being tired

Someone (sorry can't remember who) was talking about bottle and bf together and nipple confusion. Well all the times I have bf I have done so exclusively even when it was very difficult - I am stubborn As Abbie was early and lost a good bit of weight the mw advised topping her up with ebm through a syringe. This was tough as I was bf then trying to express only to bf 1 hour later - so I gave her formula to top up. Giving her the milk in a syringe became difficult as they tended to spurt the milk too quickly at times. So I gave her a bottle to top up( Tommee Tippee - closer to nature) and it was great!!

I bf her all day and then top up after bf at night to get a bit longer sleep - it's working - she is putting on weight and no nipple confusion

sorry for huge post - hope you will all come over and join me!!!!!

Poppy had her best night's sleep ever, only waking up once.
Unfortunately she has woken up grumpy!

purplejennyrose · 28/07/2008 09:45

Hey, we had a good night too - Florence did some good long stretches of sleep and I think I managed 6 hours in all!! Feel shattered now though - why is that?? Feel like I am becoming a sleep obsessive...
Bit this morning - I had a really severe postnatal infection after dd1, and am now getting a few worrying symptoms again - my midwife told me if any concerns to get back to the mat unit, but phoned and they just told me to go to my GP..so have to sit in the surgery at the end of the morning until a dr can see me. Grr.

DonutMum · 28/07/2008 12:08

Oh purplejennyrose, hope things are okay for you and you get seen soon.

We're off to colchester for me to get some nice elasticated waist skirts from m and s . And some christening invitations. Logan is being baptised on 10th August so he's all "done" before we fly off to Bahrain on 19th.

Hope you all have good days.

purplejennyrose · 28/07/2008 19:54

thanks donutmum - gp gave me 2 different antibiotics to take for 2 weeks! hope we're just playing it safe.

RUMPEL · 28/07/2008 20:33

PURPLE - did you have a womb infection? I had bacterial vaginosis after DD and the antibiotics killed me!! Really bad diarrohea with them. I am hoping all will be ok this time.

at all you getting a decent sleep - was up all night last night again - and DD is being a right handful at the moment! Lovely lovely and kind neighbour came and took her to play with her LO for an hour and half this afternoon - cup of tea in relatiove peace and lie down for 45mins - heaven..Her chickenpox seems to be improving so fingers x she will make it to nursery this WED.

HV came today Calvin has put on 1lb 1oz and is 53cm long.

Can i ask how many people are still bleeding? Calvin is 2 weeks tomorrow night and I am still bleeding fresh blood. Didm't have this withh DD as placenta was manually removed.

RUMPEL · 28/07/2008 20:51

Photos finally uploaded.

sweetkitty · 28/07/2008 21:10

Rumpel - pictures are lovely, your poor wee DD, I'm still bleeding on and off, some days it's nothing other days fresh red blood, DD1 bled for ages, DD2 about 2-3 weeks.

Minnie - I feel the same you all know I had a crap pregnancy felt miserable and spent a good part of it in tears yet theres a part of me thinks could I have another one? Wish someone could do the pregnancy thing for me and give me the newborn

purplejenny - hope you are feeling better soon

Well day 1 on my own was fine, Bethany was great it was DD1 who was a little madam, being really naughty every time my back was turned, don't know if it's her age or she's feeling a bit left out. Had a horrendous night last night Bethany up 3 times DD2 up once and it was so hot and I couldn't get back to sleep so ended up with a migraine today been walking about asleep most of the day too.

TJuice · 28/07/2008 21:13

cute pics rumpel!

i am also envious of those with good sleepers. Elodie isn't really up all night but is showing no signs of dropping one of the middle of the night feeds.

Its usually 10pm, 2am, 4-5am, 7am or thereabouts. Sometimes waking at 6-ish too, when i give her a dummy.

What I want to know is why does she sleep for 4 hours-ish after the bottle of EBM and then only two or three hours when i bf? I now sit up to do most of the feeds and always offer both breasts. i guess its just easier for her?!?

Anyway, have to get it in perspective - she is only 8 weeks and was 3 and 1/2 weeks early . . .

rumpel - I only properly stopped bleeding a week or two ago.

minipinkscottish · 28/07/2008 21:14

Disney - try not to beat yourself up - you are doing great xx I know you feel rubbish right now but I promise it will get better and then you will be able to enjoy Samuel xx Give it a couple of weeks and meds will kick in and you will be able to think more clearly and put things into perspective xx

I too am feeling broody - but I always do - but no more for me - 6 is quite enough xx

Evening all, well after saying that A was up every 90mins last night he only woke up twice which was BLISS. I don't expect a repetition tonight however.

PJR - Hope the anitbiotics work quickly.

Rumpel - A is 2 weeks today and I am still bleeding fresh blood as well.

TJuice - any chance she takes more when it's EBM as it's less work for her drinking from a bottle? Or is the EBM from a morning express as apparently the milk is richer then so more filling for her? (I think Mini has already stated this)

Mini - 6 . Do you not have a TV? runs and hides

DH going back to work tomorrow and my bottom lip is quivering a bit about this even tho compared to some of you and your DH we have it easy as he is only out of the house 8am-6pm. I have started the second layer of Dairy Milk to comfort myself.

purplejennyrose · 28/07/2008 22:49

Rumpel - I had a medical mystery!! - collapsed with horrendous pain when dd1 was 4 weeks, high temp, blood pressure through floor and pulse sky high, finally rushed for emergency surgery - according to surgeon, extensive pelvic infection indicating a burst abcess somewhere around one ovary! No-one could really explain it, but I was in hospital without dd1 for 3 days - hugely traumatic. So keen to avoid it this time! I think things are OK, I feel well in myself it's just funny grumbly pain and discharge that is not normal bleeding.
I had 3 different antibiotics then, and dd1 had bright green slurry nappies for the duration - that smelled of the ABs! Lurvely.
One of my friends has just offered to have dd1 to play with her little girl when dh goes back to work on Thurs - how nice!

gillythekid · 29/07/2008 03:39

Migraine finally went on Sunday but infection set in so was back at A&E! Had 2 stitches after birth and one isn't holding or healing well so midwife said to lounge around with my legs spread and fanjo out, not great when family visits! Am on antibiotics for a week.
Got DS in a great routine already. Last feed at 10.45 then he sleeps till 2.30am when he gets another feed, both of these expressed milk so either I or DH can do it. Then he generally sleeps till the 7am feed, although sometimes he takes a while to settle but seems to be able to do it himself most times. Think it's a mixture of calm nature and lots of reading of Gina Ford's CLB and Tracy Hogg's Baby Whisperer!
Had 2 BF experts round. La Leche was a bit crap compared to a friend of a friend who was a no nonsense get em on, get em feeding type of gal! DS latches after fussing but left nipple is quite flat so it's still a challenge to maintain it poking out. Lots of practice and expressing is helping but even when the latch is 'correct' it still makes me wince a little, perhaps I'm a bit raw despite lashings of Lansinoh!
Well that's me, sorry I haven't read the thread, gonna give my eyes a few days to recover from the migraine before I scroll through and find out who's doing what! Hope you're all well and new babies are bringing joy as well as chaos.

gillythekid · 29/07/2008 03:41

PS Have been expressing in the night to get my milk supply going, hence the 03.39 post! Off to land of nod now. Bliss!

disneystar · 29/07/2008 08:36

hi all
well i do feel a bit better today not to bad yesterday i went out for a bit of a walk but not doing to well when im outside
ive got meds thats will take a few weeks to work and he gave me some for my panic attacks and they do work it seems to slow my mind down and im more calmer
he also got me to talk about why i panic outside and i said when i took my ds out he had 3 heart attacks as a newborn one on a bus one in town and big one at home i coudnt control it just panicked rang ambulance, but my main fear is samuel will have one when im out i guess it makes sense once id spoke to him about it
good side to my dh is coming home at night for a few weeks his work is not happy but he said his wife needed him at moment i seems silly but him coming home at night relieves the pressure off me i can go have a shower read for half hour just relax reading to my others
kaz going to e-mail you tonight
all of you thanks for the support i really mean it without you guys i think i was going insane im so slow on these pills and sweat poring of me day and night but apparantly thats nerves

isaidno · 29/07/2008 08:46

pjr - that sounds horrific - hope you're ok this time!

re bleeding - I bled for 3 weeks with another week of blood stained discharge. Only been panty liner free for about a week. Thought it would never end!

My big news today is .... Poppy gave me a little smile which wasn't just wind. She is 6 weeks tomorrow, so that was right on schedule!

tjuice - Poppy always has a longer period of sleep at the beginning of the night, then wakes every 2-3 hours after that. She doesn't have a bottle so I think she's just extra tired to start with after the day.

isaidno · 29/07/2008 08:47

disney - glad you got some meds and talked to the doc. Hope things pick up soon x

DonutMum · 29/07/2008 09:42

pjr, hope those antibiotics do the trikc - did you get some probiotic tablets too?

disney, glad you feel a bit better today. I think getting out and about can help as long as it's not too much.

Got the health vistor today and think we'll find Logan has topped 9lbs - have decided I'll just bf as long as i can with shields with bottle top ups - it's just too much to bf solely - I'd never get anything else done. Too scared to go on the bf board - some quite stident viewpoints on there!

Off into the bath - anyone else found they are really smelly right now? Not sure if it's the heat or the hormones.

Libra1975 · 29/07/2008 11:23

Hurrah - I am now a proper mummy. This morning I made myself tea and toast whilst holding a wiggly and crying baby (yes my toast was more important that his next feed!)

Donutmum - you are not alone, I am pouring sweat off me at the moment and pre-baby would have been showering twice a day!! Even my trusty Mitchum is failing in its task.

DS - glad your DH is able to come home at night, he sounds like a star and has his feet firmly grounded where they belong - at home.

ponto · 29/07/2008 11:57

Libra1975, sounds like you are coping with dh going back to work! I am taking full advantage of the last few days of dh's paternity leave - he got up at 7 with dd1 and dd2 and brought me a cup of tea this morning but Bryony went back to sleep and so did I, when I woke up the tea was cold so I used the intercom button on the phone to get him to bring a fresh cup! I then pushed my luck and did it again to ask for some toast and he and the dds brought up a lovely tray of breakfast.

Bryony has been very settled in the evenings but last night fed constantly between 9pm an 1am, interspersed with screaming. I was unable to get her into her crib at all so she stayed in bed with me all night, which gave me backache again this morning. Looking back, she slept pretty much all day yesterday, so I am going to make sure I wake her at least every 3 hours for a feed today and try to get a bath, feed, bed routine going this evening. Will also try putting her down in her crib during the day to get her used to it.

Rumpel - my bleeding is settling down a lot, only 8 days after giving birth, but I think this is unusual, I know I bled for 12 weeks after dd1 (but I did go on to the mini pill at 3 weeks that time) and I think I bled for a month or so after dd2.

sweetkitty · 29/07/2008 12:07

Well HV has just been don't think we will gel although she was pleasant enough I felt she couldn't get out fast enough oh and she kept going on about the wonderful couple who used to live in this house 3 years ago! Gave B a prescription for thrush and me a lecture on keeping her bum clean and not letting the other DDs out their fingers in her mouth - had to tell her I used to be amicrobiologist she was very pro breastfeeding and was delighted when I said I had BF for 12 and 15 months before. Apparently there is a BFing support group and if you join you get 2 hours free cleaning or ironing a week! On same time as toddlers but think that may have swung it oh theres also a creche.

libra - you will be amazed the things you can do one handed, my best was answering the door to the postman still BFing

disney - I'm not surprised you feel anxious going out you poor thing, I have had anxiety and depression in the past and it's a horrible vicious circle, I think talking things through with a counsellor would help you too

donutmum - I'm very pro BFing but more pro happy baby happy mummy, formula is a godsend at times. Expressing is hard work too so well done anyone who is keeping it up, oh that reminds me I must do some expressing soon to get B used to a bottle.

isaidno - first smiles aww cannot believe Poppy is 6 weeks

isaidno · 29/07/2008 12:43

SK - I have found hv pleasant but quick to go. I think by the time you are on number 3 they are happy to let you get on with it. Was the same with mw really.

pigleychez · 29/07/2008 13:18

Hi all,

Hope everyones well and bubbas are behaving.

Abigail seems to be wide awake at night and takes ages to get back to sleep after a feed.. but slowly getting used to the interupted sleep.

DH is being a star and really looking after me!

Im expressing milk at the mo (milk came in today and my boobs are ROCK hard!!)
Abigail is having my expressed milk and formula, so although sadly not feeding from the breast is still getting the goodness of my milk.
DH actually enjoys giving the feeds so expressing can have its advantages too

Saying that i did manage to get Abigail to latch on and feed a little using a nipple shield so its a good start.

re blood loss... I was really suprised as i was expecting much more.. Abigails 5 days old now and mine is much less than a normal period.( Not that im complaining!)

Off to register the birth this afternoon... Our first trip out!

Libra1975 · 29/07/2008 15:21

I'm in trouble with the HV already as I didn't return her call fast enough. She only phone yesterday morning ffs and I am much to busy holding a baby in one hand whilst eating cake with the other.

Also does anyone elses LO have an uncanny ability to know when you are just about to leave the house and therefore be sick despite only being able to see a maximum distance of 14 inches?
I am also impressed by A's unfailing ability to know when I am about to sit down for supper and decide he wants some food as well.

minipinkscottish · 29/07/2008 15:23

Had HV this morning and Abbie has put on another 12 and a half oz making her 8lb 7 and a half now

Re blood loss - mine was very heavy this time and although Abbie will be 7 weeks on Friday I am still getting brown discharge and the odd smear of red blood - doc says all is well but I'm beginning to think it will never stop Got post natel tomorrow too - yuch !!

OP posts:
sweetkitty · 29/07/2008 15:44

pigley - keep trying her on the boob first when she is most hungry she will get it, expressing is great for getting rid of rock hard boobs they are so uncomfy, if one of the DDs hugs me I'm like ouch! Boobs do settle down in a few weeks though.

Well done Abbie on putting on weight too

libra1975 - I think HVs think all you is wait about on them phoning, mine phoned on Friday and wanted to come over in half an hour but I was out shopping so she said Monday then made a big thing about the baby being ok I said shes fine the MW seen her yesterday she said if I had any worries to phone NHS direct
