I know that feeling Hazellnut! DS was 4 hour at night and now gone back to 3...yawn!!! he wakes at exactly 2.30 every night..i am so bored waking up and seeing that time on the clock!

Got him weighed today and he is 9lb 15oz (7lb 14 at birth 4 weeks ago). What a piglet! Glad my milk is working well though!

starlover · 09/03/2005 15:39

angeliz... i think that she is fine! Linus has just started going for 5/6 hours at night!!!!
He has a big feed at 11 and then sleeps 'til 4 or 5ish. Then not up again until gone 9am!
It's great!

welcome to nik! As you can tell from the above I am getting a reasonable amount of sleep. Can't sleep in the day though, as have too much other stuff to do.

Hazellnut.. I am sure it is the osteopath that cured Linus's hiccups. He used to get them a couple of times a day before we saw her (and got them a lot before he was born as well)...
He has only had them once or twice since we first saw her 2 weeks ago! She said his diaphragm was very tight, and in fact she asked if he got hiccups a lot as they are related!

Managed to get some sleep at last, she fed every 4 hours and feeding now more efficient too so I got some kip myself. Feel vaguely human today although was steam sterilising dummies in a clollander, forgot it was on & only remembered when I smelt the melting plastic as it had boiled dry......maybe I should have used the proper sterilizer but it seemed a faff for 2 dummies. DH being dispatched to buy replacements and I'll be scraping molten plastic off my nice steamer! Serves me right!

hi all!

well, Linus had a terrible day yesterday... so we went down to a&e this morning and got him seen by a paediatrician.
The diagnosis? floppy windpipe. apparently there is nothing we can do about it but it generally fixes itself. They can operate, but only if it is more severe... or if it goes on beyond a year!
So, we just have to deal with the not being able to breathe properly for a bit longer

Hazellnut · 11/03/2005 09:26

sorry to hear of Linus's troubles but I guess at least its something that should fix - the poor chap !

Will look into osteopaths I think - DD gets hiccups about 6/7 times a day - usually half an hour to an hour after a feed. I have my 6 week check today so may ask the doctor.

At dd's 6 week check earlier in the week she weighed in at 7 lbs 12 oz !! Whilst this may not seem much (i.e. average new born size !) we were pleased as she was 4 lbs 9 oz at birth and had put on a pound and an ounce in 10 days.... The doctor said she wouldn't take long to catch up and also was very supportive about my mixed feeding - saying that in an ideal world everyone would breast feed but it isn't an ideal world and unforetunately sometimes we have to compromise and if it was the difference between dd not feeding/growing then I was doing the right thing. And when she weighed her she said again that I was doing the right thing. It was great to get that level of support (esp. reading some of the threads on the feeding board !!!)

that's great news hazellnut... and well done to DD!!

futurity · 14/03/2005 15:28

hows everyone doing with the dreaded S word (sleep!)?! I am feeling quite awake as DS slept from 11.30 until 4.30 last night..I dont think I got the full 5 hours sleep but it definetely makes a difference to the lack of sleep I have been having recently! I still cant stop nodding off early evening though and given half the chance I would sleep in the day (3 year old DS prevents that!)

Nik72 · 14/03/2005 15:35

sleep? What's that? reckon I'm doing well if I get 3 hours at a time....at least am getting some naps during the day so able to function.

Great weight gain, Hazelnut, you must be chuffed

HuskyGirl · 14/03/2005 17:56

Just seen this thread, hello to all February mums!! My DD is 4 weeks now and we've finally reached 7lb - yipee!(she was born 5lb 7oz). She seems to have no pattern to sleep or feeding in the day but at night goes either 3 or 4 hours. She struggles with hiccups a lot in the day, seems in pain when laid down after feeding (even after leaving her upright for a while and has been spitting up more, so we're trying Infacol, still waiting for it to kick in, but will ask about reflux etc at 6 week check next week. We've been out of the house about 4 times as it sems to take us half a day to get ready!!! 4 weeks feels like 4 years, bless her!!!!!

starlover · 14/03/2005 19:14

huskygirl... we were talking about hiccups a bit earlier..
I took DS to the osteopath for chesty/breathing/hiccupy related probs and his hiccups have all but gone now!
she said his diaphragm was very tight, and asked if he got a lot of hiccups (which he did), so she massaged it to loosen it a bit and it's worked wonders!

HuskyGirl · 15/03/2005 11:35

thanks starlover - i'll look into it

jolly4 · 16/03/2005 12:14

trying too do this one handed asb katy on the breast i am bloody knakered do sometimes feel like jackin the breast in but keep on goin she loves cuddles off mum gets very windy and does have terrible hiccups i am gonna get out of house now while i can too baby massage wish me luck xxxx

Nik72 · 17/03/2005 10:53

How was baby massage? Anyone else doing it?

starlover · 17/03/2005 11:09

I give Linus a massage after his bath, but it's not a proper one... I just make it up as I go along!!!
He seems to enjoy it though.

How is everyone getting on?

bunjies · 18/03/2005 19:49

Can't believe Sasha will be 5 weeks on Sunday. The time has really flown past. Things have calmed down a bit with the not sleeping at night thing so I do feel slightly more human these days! Getting better at the breastfeeding as well although still a bit sore. Have been trying different positions like the underarm rugby ball hold which seem to be helping.

Nik72 · 19/03/2005 12:11

This has to get easier, baby still having problems latching and have spent most of the last 24 hours in tears. Feel totally inadequate. DH goes back to work monday & am worried I won't cope. His mother is coming to stay tomorrow so at least there'll be someone else in the house but she never helps, just sits around and can be hard work to talk to. Someone please tell me it all starts to get better - lie if you have to!!

fruitful · 19/03/2005 12:48

Oh Nik, it does, it does! Hang in there.

And give your MIL specific jobs to do...

starlover · 19/03/2005 17:15

nik... it DOES get better. I also had problems with b/f for a while and I used to cry and cry because I couldn't give Linus what he wanted.
I think partly it was hormones too, because now when he won't feed I can deal with it and it's no problem. I have stopped crying over EVERYTHING!
Soon it'll all fall into place.. remember, your little one needs practice too, and the more you do it the better you'll both become..

What is it about the latching on that you are having probs with? Maybe some of us have some worthwhile advice...

Nik72 · 19/03/2005 18:06

Thanks,am feeling a bit better, went out for a nice walk in the sunshine. I think it's all hormones & tiredness. Dd seems to struggle latching on the left - she just seems to slip off rather than take a big mouthful and that side is very sore. Having said that she latched better last time today but the nipple is so sore that when she keeps trying & failing it just makes it worse. Have resorted to shields a couple of times which has let it heal a bit but don't want to rely on them.
Hopefully MIL should be fine - will do that & give her things to do. Thanks for the support.

starlover · 19/03/2005 20:44

nik, I have the same problem! except it's the right side that is suffering!
DS is 6 weeks and I seem to be in a vicious circle of letting it heal and then it becoming sore again... he latches on and it hurts like hell, and then it feels a bit better but he keeps losing it and sucking it back in and that hurts too!
The nipple on that side doesn't stick out so much as the left and I think he doesn't get as much suction on it (sorry to be so detailed!).. am thinking about expressing slightly before I feed from that side to bring it out a bit.

Have you got some lansinoh? it's FAB for sore nipples... can get it in mothercare. It's £10 a tube, but it's SO worth it!

I also popped into a baby cafe near here to get some advice and they helped me with getting him latched on.

Glad you're feeling a bit better now anyway...

fruitful · 20/03/2005 19:59

Ds was doing the latching on and then falling off thing for a while but he is getting better at it. I think it is as his mouth gets bigger, he finds it easier. He is also partial to one side - I think maybe the milk flows faster on that side. And its now about 2 cup sizes bigger so I've got to really concentrate on getting him to feed more off the smaller side.

HV is coming tomorrow to weigh him and I don't think he has put on much since last week so I'm in for a lecture about giving him formula. I'm swinging wildly between being in tears because he isn't putting on weight, and wanting to give up and bottlefeed him, to being confident that he is alert and happy and being determined to bf. Aagh.

I'm just hanging in there, waiting for that first smile!

starlover · 21/03/2005 09:44

aww fruitful, hang on in there! Don't listen to them if they tell you to feed him formula... I think you would know if he wasn't getting enough because he'd want feeding constantly. As long as he is happy and healthy that's all that matters.

Linus was weighed on Friday and has shot up to 10lb 15oz!!!
I was looking in my own baby book at my mum's yesterday, and at birth I was only 3oz heavier than Linus, but by the same age I was 12lb 12!!!!!!!!!

fruitful · 21/03/2005 11:57

Yes but he does want feeding constantly... well, each feed takes an hour and he wants another one an hour later, which is not popular with my 3yo dd. And he weighs 5lb - so has gained 10oz in 5 weeks.

Somebody tell me why I don't want to bottlefeed!

starlover · 21/03/2005 12:51

have you tried keep offering the same boob to make sure he is getting enough hindmilk?
If he is mainly taking foremilk then he won't be getting as much fat which would explain why he is hungry quite often and isn't putting on as much weight as he maybe ought to be...
