essie I am also horribly sweaty. It's supposed to last about six weeks, but I'm now 6+3 and no end in sight. I've only worn deodrant once since Storm was born as it didn't work and the smell of the two together was VILE.

re dummies, just a word of warning - if they're not up for taking it don't force the issue. Storm sometimes will take one but has projectile vomited once when I persevered, and puked a lot another time too.

daft question re reuseable nappies does anyone else have probs winding their LO with these on? I find it harder to get Storm in a good position and so she ends up really windy sometimes.

poppy my DH is also better at winding storm - he thinks it's cos his shoulders are bigger and harder, so there's a firmer surface to lean her against, which kind of makes sense.

essie
If Iestyn doesn't realise he's full that sounds like he might have a really windy tum - Storm gets like that when she's got wind and will feed and feed (which of course makes it worse). Have you tried cutting out dairy ? I think I mentioned it before. One in four babies is lactose intolerant and lots of dairy in the diet can increase the lactose in your milk... Storm only seems to get bad wind if I eat a lot of dairy.
Also, have you considered he might have reflux? All that crying could be he's got an acidy tum? Sorry if you've already ruled these out - just trying to help however I can - hope your lecture goes well.

sponge i bought some medium flow teats yesterday because storm sucks so hard through one she gets terrible wind. they're supposed to be for three months plus but the mothercare woman said not to worry - maybe a faster flow would help with the snacking feeding as well?

Essie3 · 16/07/2008 12:13

Morning all - or is it officially afternoon? Feeling like a real human being for the first time since, ooh, I conceived! .

Last night, I think, was a success. DH slept in the spare room with Iestyn, and I slept in our lovely kingsize bed alone. I fed Iestyn at 11.45 and expressed some milk (and also defrosted some) so that DH could give him a bottle. I heard them wake at 4ish (Iestyn is going longer between night feeds now) with some crying, and DH said he needed to warm the milk for him, but he took it. Then DH had to resort to the dummy to settle him. But he settled...and we all woke for 8.30, then...we all went back to sleep until 10!!
Iestyn - strangely - seems to be sleeping a lot this morning. Very odd - he's normally awake and screaming. I'm hoping we don't suffer tonight, but maybe the osteopathy has worked [clutching at straws emoticon]. There does seem to be a bit of a change in his feeding patterns now.

I'm still worried about the dummy wrecking the bf, though.

Greenfairy - I have cut right down on the dairy and it does seem to make a difference. (Main problem is that I'm veggie and hungry!) He is quite windy, but we're getting good farts these days. (From higher education and top level research...to farts. Such a journey. I wrote a book in my previous life, but now Deal or No Deal is intellectually draining.)
I reckon you might be right on Sponge's problem too? Not that I'm any expert, but maybe having to suck really hard is just too much like hard work for Alex, so he doesn't carry on as long as he should? I'm sorry - there was some intelligent thought behind that at one stage...

Off to print out my paper now.

poppy34 · 16/07/2008 12:59

amber re sucking hard.. reckon the bigger teats are a good idea.. noticed edie was getting very tricky on her night feeds as tired( not latching, lacklustre sucking) -have switched to expressing for night/first feed of morning and its really made a difference...

she is very clingy today (abnormally so).. its nice but not so easy to do anything (typing with her balanced monkey style on my arm/chest). Also she was very snuffly and restless in her sleep - may try saline drops on her nose but toying with idea of using a sleeping bag.. someone else mentioned this was good with their restless/kicky baby .

might try and sneak a lie down while madam asleep

PiggyPenguin · 16/07/2008 13:12

After an incredibly awake day yesterday which was a killer on my back Jamie slept really well last night (well apart from 2 hourly feeds) and is still sleeping this afternoon. So now I am worried that he is sleeping too much. Poor chap just can't win!

Essie, hope all goes well today. Has anyone heard from Ernest recently?

debinaustria · 16/07/2008 13:24

Sybil - glad it's not just Ethan doing 2 hourly feeds.Saying that though he went from 10-2 last night then 2-5, Dh got up with him at 8.00 and I went back to sleep until 10.00 - great.

Ernest is fine just too busy with day to day stiff with her 4dc as the boys are on holiday now to keep up with our chat on here.

whinegums · 16/07/2008 13:38

Poppy, I've been using a grobag for Barnaby since night 2, and it's great. Reading all your posts, I think we're v v v v lucky - I feed him from midnight for about 30-40mins, then he goes down for at least 4 hours. Wakes for another feed, back to sleep for another 3 - 4 hours. I keep thinking every night that it will change, and I know he's only 9 days old, but so far so good. I've told him he can stay.

My nips are knackered though, getting him on is soooo painful, and the cleaning/changing stuff almost always results in a crying match. You can't have everything I guess!

Essie, hope today went well. Deb, good luck with whatever you decide to do re moving/estate agent.

Wondering where Dramaqueen is as well. Laura, how are you getting on, looking forward to your birth story and some pics of Charlotte.

PregnantPenguin · 16/07/2008 14:22

Hello everyone - am overjoyed to be back online properly (thank you Sky broadband). Although I have been trying to read your posts via mobile phone, didn't dare try and post again myself as it seemed to result in 100 duplicate postings!

I am definitely more whiffy than I used to be! Less embarassed by the whiffiness than the feeling that I've wet the bed each morning - if anything touches my boobs in the night they don't so much leak as gush!

Happy to say that the breastfeeding is much easier that it was in the first ten days of so. It's not easy, bullet shaped nipples anyone? But it is easier. Had to laugh this morning when Ryder kept trying to push my boob away, but they were so full each time he did so he got squirted with milk. Other than that he has been pretty ood today - which terrifies me as it'll probably mean a nightmare afternoon/evening/night... I'm actually going to have to wake him for a feed in a minute (breaks my heart to do it, I never know if he'll settle again).

Anyway, if he has a sleep again this afternoon I may get round to putting up some photos and changing my name...!

A few quick embarrassing questions before I go:

  1. When does the bleeding stop? (I had a em c section but also had a 2nd degree tear due to overzealous use of ventouse)
  2. Has anyone had sex yet?
  3. If so, did it hurt?
PregnantPenguin · 16/07/2008 14:24

ten days of so ten days or so

PregnantPenguin · 16/07/2008 14:26

Oh bugger, he's also been good rather than ood! I'm out of practise at this posting lark...

BulletNipples · 16/07/2008 15:07

I've got a new name! Unfortunately the only photos I could access were from my mobile phone - more and better ones soon...The Mum formerly known as Pregnant Penguin.

Upsidedowncake · 16/07/2008 15:36

Wotcher everyone

Snort, PP, I can't go round calling you Bulletnipples. That's rude.

Thank goodness I am not the only one with night sweats. I had it last time but it seems to be much worse this time. the other day, I went through three changes of night clothes. And I feel so sorry for Dorothy. I wouldn't like to have my breakfast under my armpit!

Discovered that the wind was partly due to overzealous eating of garlic. I ate loads of chorizo fried in garlic - and then tasted my milk a few hours later. It was rank! No wonder Dorothy was feeding slowly and got wind!

Re snacking, at the moment, [Upside touches wood] Dorothy is much better at not snacking. I think it's because she is much better rested. I am trying to do Gina Ford-lite / Baby whisperer naps, which means she isn't quite so tired when she tries to feed. Don't know if that helps.

Debs, what did I miss about moving? Will go back and see if I can find it.

Essie3 · 16/07/2008 15:41

Going to get changed for the lecture in a minute. Iestyn being bearable today - some crying this afternoon, but not too bad at all.
Whinegums - I complain a lot about a screaming baby, but actually Iestyn does sleep at night (after midnight - he changes into a pumpkin or something after the witching hour!) and his patterns are much like Barnaby's, so you may be lucky. Daytimes are baaaaad, though!

Upsidedowncake · 16/07/2008 15:45

GOOD LUCK ESSIE.

And hope breast pads work!

ktpie · 16/07/2008 16:23

Hi everyone, actually managed to get near the computer, although I am still keeping up by mobile whilst breastfeeding.

Good luck with the lecture Essie!

I am another sweaty one at night, glad I'm not alone, I end up completely soaked and still seem to smell after a bath or shower, it's horrible.

I've had a miserable few days, stitches started to feel better on friday just in time for my right boob to swell up, go red, hot and tender. Had a midwife appointment on saturday morning, she was brilliant showed me a different position to hold him in and how to hand express. But as soon as I got home I started to feel really ill, headachey, temperature, sore throat, aching all over, everything!
Struggled on for a few days thinking I was just run down then rang the midwife yesterday who sent me to the doctor for some antibiotics.
This has of course coincided with a growth spurt so all LO wants to do is feed all day, otherwise he screams. Spent yesterday afternoon crying as I felt so rough and wasn't coping on my own at all, he was screaming and my breast was sore, fortunately DH has the day off today and I'm feeling a lot better, boob is still sore but not as swollen, am managing to feed him from it more (even though it is really painful when he latches on to it), been massaging it before and after feeding and have a cabbage leaf in my bra!
Saw the midwife again this morning but this time it was a rubbish one who just took a glance at my boob, didn't even look at the baby, got me to weigh him and had her back to me asking whether his eyes were clear and how his cord was, err fallen off! All she seems interested in is filling in the paperwork. Good news is he has put on loads of weight so all the pain is worth it.

Greenfairy - I know what you mean about winding them in reusable nappies, he isn't as easy to bend into the right position.

Better go baby is crying.

hedgehog1979 · 16/07/2008 16:36

Just a quickie, having a fab time here, have been expressing quite a lot and so everyone is having a chance to feed - Aunties, Grandparents and even DH. Have been on the West Somerset Railway to Minehead today and he slept all the way there, woke up for a feed while we were in the cafe, went back to sleep and slept the majority of the way back to want a feed and a change in the car before we came back to my parents. Think I have to buy a steam train to help my son sleep!!

Good luck with your lecture Essie

Rolf · 16/07/2008 16:36

Can't call you Bulletnipples either!

With all of mine I've bled for about 6 weeks which apparently is normal if you're bfeeding. I'm still bleeding a bit now (4 weeks on) but very lightly - I've had significantly less bleeding this time. Don't know if things are different after a c-section.

Haven't had sex yet. Night sweats and Jabba the Hutt belly don't do much for either me or DH . My advice is to get a bottle of wine, drink it then get your DH to hit you on the head with the bottle before trying. Lots of KY too as bfeeding can make you drier.

Poor DD2 has turned into a pimply baby. It happened on Sunday when she was carried around by some friends on a sunny day, and also I ate some spicy beans which I don't think agreed with her. Don't know which is those things did it. Poor little thing. She was weighed yesterday and weighs 10lb 5oz, so has gained alomst 2lb in 4 weeks! V proud of my calorific breastmilk although I'm slightly disappointed that I am not shrinking at a similarly fast rate.

My midwife signed me off yesterday. I am gutted. I'm seeing the other midwife next week for a goodbye. She's the one I know pretty well and I'm really dreading saying goodbye.

LauraT · 16/07/2008 16:56

All still going well here, although the three hour settling period in the evenings is rather draining! (9 til midnight) once she's down though, Charlotte is sleeping really well, waking once for a feed about 4 and then off again pretty quickly. Am also waiting for this bubble to burst...

whinegums i posted a brief birth story on antenatal... think you were probably still in hospital!

does anyone have any good winding tips? DH is much better than me at it, wondered if anyone had any good positions or techniques to try?

debinaustria · 16/07/2008 17:14

HI

UDcake - seriously considering moving back, loads of reasons, but mainly missing family and friends and just not "belonging" if that makes sense.

KTPie - have you also tried to get your breasts warm before a feed so that the milk ducts open up - either hot flannel, hot water bottle etc, 10 mins before a feed which is tricky to time.

Laurat - winding - walking downstairs with baby tumm against you, in upright position
or, sit baby upright on your knee, support their back with one hand and use other hand to stretch their chin up so that the back is striaght as possible and their windpipe or whatever(you're the DR)

Sex - attempted it twice (but I have no sex drive), a little sore both times, but OK.

Rolf - sorry you also have a spotty baby - have you seen the photo of ethan on the profile?

debinaustria · 16/07/2008 17:15

Laurat - forgot to add in sitting position I don't attempt to rub back or anything just hold him there for a couple of minutes and sometimes we're lucky!

fungle · 16/07/2008 17:17

Rolf. LOL at your recipe for sex first time round, sounds like the best plan!
Bleeding is pretty light here now, just starts up if I do too much walking. Think with DD it was around 5 weeks until I could go out pad free.
Well, Isla has got oral thrush
And I may have it on my nipples too, which may explain her latch going tits up(excuse the pun) and my boobs hurting, kind of like shooting pain and feel generally bruised.
Just had the BF counseller round who was very helpful re positions and latch etc, also suggested more skin to skin which we havnt really had much time to do.
DD at Grannies tonight so I can maybe stay in bed with Isla in the morning, so we're going to have a nice cuddle in bed later, see if that helps things.
Have to contact HV tomorrow as Isla has been given drops for thrush, but nothing for me. Surley I'll just pass it straight back to her??
Thinking maybe a nice glass of Red wine tonight. How much are people drinking while BF ing?? Not sure how much is safe.

BulletNipples · 16/07/2008 17:52

Ok - will try and think of new name tonight...hadn't fed for a while and my nipples were clearly distracting me! All suggestions welcome (I do like Popped Penguin, but like Pregnant Penguin, thought that would date pretty soon). BTW, I chose PP because pregnancy made me waddle...and I'm a short bird.

Upsidedown - your post made me hungry...mmm chorizo, another thing I missed whilst pregnant. I've got GF, but would anyone be willing to summarise baby whisperer for me?

Sorry about your boob KT, even more sorry about useless mw.

KT & GF - Am about to start on the real nappies this weekend. Have a number of different types to try, but suprisingly as they are the cheapest, the prefolds seem to be the easiest and the simplest so far. Am I missing something? What's the catch?

Rolf - LOL at description of Jabba the hutt belly (so accurate!). Dh would like the caveman idea of knocking me on the head and dragging me off to his cave, so better not let him see this... My LO has gone spotty too, quite normal apparantly, but I don't like it either.

Laura - However much we burp him, Ryder seems to posset on the changing mat. His hair sticks up more on one side than the other as a result.

bitofadramaqueen · 16/07/2008 17:54

Just adding this to my threads! I'm back everyone. Haven't had a chance to read this thread yet, but will try. I've posted my birth story on the old ante-natal thread. Few dramas (but then, that's me all over!).

Hope you guys all well, will catch up soon.

thegreenfairy · 16/07/2008 18:00

pp i had a cs and bleeding took six weeks to stop, tho was v light for the last ten days.

re sex, dh and i have had 3 goes (together - haha), at 2, 3 and 6 weeks - third time lucky. it did hurt (which i wasn't expecting due to cs) but we took it v v slowly and is starting to feel good again - bloody killed the first time...

good luck essie!

Amberc · 16/07/2008 18:12

Hi all,

NIGHTNANNY Bloody brilliant!!! She was so lovely and adores the baby and has a lovely way with him. Was my first night on Monday and I must say I did wake three times but I just went back to sleep (I locked her in the house with the chubb lock so she couldn't escape so felt more secure but crossed my fingers that nothing caught fire in the night!!). I had loads more sleep and she gave me tips about feeding and showed me how to get Luke to sleep on his side which she said is more comfy and better for wind. She's going to cut his nails tonight (I CANNOT do it!!). If anyone in London is interested I can give them her number. Looking forward to her coming back tonight as I will be way more relaxed.

Breathing monitors - we have just got one www.nannymonitor.co.uk/shop.htm as I have to move the baby to his own room to let me sleep when the night nanny is not here - it's like having an ape in the room. The reason that you should keep them with you is not because you won't hear them but because the carbon dioxide you breathe out prompts them to breathe in.

Post baby fatness - yes me too - got a f8cking overhang like you wouldn't believe above the c section scar. I'm sure I can only get rid of it through surgery! Can't do exercise due to the section and am bored so just eat chocolate. Oh dear. I'll end up being one of those people on those documentaries who have to be cut out of their house by the fire brigade and put on a hoist to remove them.

sophiewd · 16/07/2008 18:29

Hello all and sorry for lack of posting. Have been busy here, there and everywhere.

Staying with in laws was ok, FIL got pissed and passed out Sunday luch time, SMIL was OK, I was bored stiff though as yet again I got to stay in and look after children while DH went out, have told him that is the last time I am going there if that is all I do.

We went to Marwell Zoo on the way back, and today have been to Falmer Palmers which DD loved. Have also been swimming, and walking. I am 4 weeks post section, and feeling fine, walking further then last time.

We are getting ready for a weekend of partying at Camp Bestival then back to reality and starting B&B's agin next week, it has been lovely haveing 2 weeks of.

Oh yes Basil is doing great, grazing during the day and being more alert and we have just about got it down to 11pm, 3a and 6.30am, so getting some good stretches of sleep.
