Let's make a list of members!

spongebrainbigpants · 18/07/2008 21:46

Essie, please don't make a list of all of those of us who would have died in childbirth - think it may put me off having any more children . . .

Essie3 · 18/07/2008 22:02

Oh, don't worry - I won't post it up here or anything like that! No, no, don't get upset Sponge! I didn't mean to do that. Really really sorry.
I spend too much time in the thirteenth century.

Essie3 · 18/07/2008 22:03

I really should have thought more carefully before posting that long post. I'm really sorry everybody.

TJuice · 18/07/2008 22:37

essie, elodie gets exactly like that for the 7pm feed sometimes. usually its stomach-ache or wind, too much stimulation (faces, music, tv) or my supply is a bit low. it sound "colicky" but i think colic happens repeatedly.

Rolf · 18/07/2008 23:19

Essie - v interesting post. What a great way to look at your ante natal group - definitely different from the usual "...well, she's an accountant and has vulval varicosities"

Rolf · 19/07/2008 08:51

oh God, have I upset people as well? If I have I'm really really sorry.

Joins Essie on the bottom stair...

goingfor3 · 19/07/2008 10:20

Morning all,

I'm feeling very cheated! My period has already started, DS is only 8 weeks old and fully breastfed. With dd2 they didn't come back until she was 6 months old and 4 months with dd1. I did notice some ewcm a couple of weeks ago (still obsessive about knicker checking after ttc and pregnancy . Glad I'm not relying on breastfeeding not to get pregnant - abstinance seems to be the perfect method!

katyjo · 19/07/2008 10:59

Essie your a nutter, but I have thought about things like that myself. I had to have wisdom teeth out a few years ago and I thought, if I had been born before anibiotics and teeth extraction, would I still be here. I guess though if you look at all the medical advances we rely on many of us wouldn't have made it to our teens let alone pregnancy! Well that's depressing.

AMBER you are certainly not alone, I cried when ds first smiled at me, it was totally relief that he liked me, I felt really low after I had him. If you are used to working and the sense of achievement that brings looking after a baby is very difficult because you don't get any of the same satisfaction. I used to give myself really small targets for the day (ie go to supermarket, walk or have a bath) you get a bit more satisfaction that way and try to get out and meet other mums (normal ones like you not people that think they are supermums). I promise you it does get better, when they start recognising you, laughing smiling and becoming a little person. Big hugs XX#

Goingfor3 Poor you, is your lo sleeping really well? My periods returned shortly after ds started sleeping through the night at about 3 months.
I am with you on abstinence, I am so tired most of the time and with Mia and a 2 year old we don't get much opportunity, he sleeps from 7 til 7 and she sleeps from about 10-6 (with a 3am feed) so not much nookie time!!
Having a coil fitted on friday, maybe that will help.

pleasechange · 19/07/2008 11:02

dylansmum thanks for the link, will give those dummies a go

essie your post made me laugh anyway - you're sounding v philosophical! BTW Alexander also does that fussing, coming off the nipple lark. Not sure whether he's just messing around or if he does this when the supply is running low. He's definitely a comfort feeder though

goingfor3 commisserations!

Rolf · 19/07/2008 11:03

That's not fair is it G43? if I wasn't using the abstinence method (!) I'd probably not be bothering with contraception as my period has always taken 6 months to come back too.

Have you noticed any difference in Harvey's reaction to your milk?

Poor DD2'a pimples are dreadful. As bad as a teenager with acne. I know they are nothing to worry about but if there was something I could do - I dunno, like change my diet - I would. Bit at being so shallow... Apart from that she is great.

pleasechange · 19/07/2008 11:08

forgot to mention, my MIL is another one who is insisting that the baby smiled at her. He is only 2 weeks and has definitely not smiled yet, but she is adamant!

spongebrainbigpants · 19/07/2008 11:15

Essie, you didn't upset me! Just didn't want to appear on a list of "those who wouldn't have made it" . V squeamish about all that kind of stuff anyway - wimp with a capital W!

allnew, MIL hasn't done it yet but I'm waiting! I think Alex smiled at me this morning, but not sure, he's eyes lit up when he did it which was a first. He's 5 wks tomorrow - could it have been a smile?!

katyjo · 19/07/2008 11:46

allnew wind seems to make grandparents happy, so annoying though, trying to steal credit for the first smile!

sponge sounds like a smile to me, you can usually tell if it creeps up to their eyes as well. Mia's smiles start in her eyes and spread across her face, very cute, she loves being kissed on the face. My sister always swears by throwing teddies in the air, not sure if this is just for laughs though.

systemsaddict · 19/07/2008 11:51

Rolf caitlin is covered in pimples too - fortunately i got a good pic of her after she started waking up a bit and before they arrived, on profile.

i'm always amazed that maternal mortality rates are so very low nowadays when birth used to be so dangerous. the natural chilbirth movement is great but we need to appreciate the massive difference all the medical interventions have made too - after one v. straightforward and one rather complicated birth i'm v. grateful for both!!

hmm need to get computer keyboard fixed, shift key has died ...

Rolf · 19/07/2008 12:00

SA - the pics on your proflie are lovely. That first one - such pretty hair and eyes (and yes, lovely clear skin too!). What are you doing with her spots? I'm just keeping DD2's skin clean - don't know if there's anything else that would help.

I can't upload any pics as I'm still on DH's PC and also my phone isn't working properly and doesn't seem able to recognise the USB cable. I might be able to fix my own PC if I can get into it. Does anyone have any idea how to open up a Dell PC? It's such a dopey, girly question that I'm embarassed to ask it! The screws on the back have wierd little holes in them that aren't the shape of either flat or philips screwdrivers, nor those funny key things I found in DH's toolbox.

I can't park either

thegreenfairy · 19/07/2008 12:05

essie with my cs and BB I'd have been a goner for sure - feel free to put me on your list - I've also thought about that.

Urgh, trying to follow routine but keep falling asleep for too long (her and me) and then she's awake for HOURS in the evening (five yesterday, seven the day before). What's the longest they should stay awake?

systemsaddict · 19/07/2008 12:15

Thanks Rolf! I'm not doing anything about the spots - they'll go away eventually. If one of the spots looks sore or gets infected I might put some breast milk on it for a few days. Ds had really bad baby acne, and cradle cap too, but it all cleared up of its own accord in the end - whatever I tried didn't seem to make much difference, so now i take a non-interventionist approach.

and i can't park either

spongebrainbigpants · 19/07/2008 12:39

Rolf, I'm seriously impressed at you even contemplating fixing your own PC - I wouldn't have a clue where to start!

Rolf · 19/07/2008 14:10

umm, I actually was exaggerating a little bit . It won't switch on so I reckon there's a loose connection from the reset button. All I want to do is wiggle the wires a bit until I either fix it or make it worse - but I can't open the flipping case.

We had no bathroom light for weeks and weeks (don't know if anyone remembers Garlicgate - part of the problem was peeing in the dark). The electrician come round and said the light bulb was broken . In my defence, I'd tried several new bulbs and must have had a lot of duds.

DD1's new thing is making people cry (either her brothers or me) and then singing "someone's crying my Lord, kum ba yah"!

aberdeenhiker · 19/07/2008 16:35

Fraser and I have been sick with a fever this week - I'm exhausted! But we're very impressed with NHS 24, they sent a GP to our house on Thursday night to check out Fraser (and prescribed calpol - thank goodness!) when they heard that I was sick too and we had a toddler at home. As much as I hate my local GPs, the healthcare here is wonderful. Fraser's fever's gone now and mine's almost gone too. I'm sure I'm just recovering slower because I'm up all night breastfeeding (and while he was sick we were up almost all night).

UDC - sorry to hear about your hospital run, glad it turned out okay and that's really interesting info from the paed. that his kid sleeps in their own room. Real advice is so much better than 'guidelines'.

Thanks for the advice on the weight front - I've already got the WHO charts because I've been through this all with DS1 already. I'm confident that Fraser's fine and feeding well and since it's my second time around i'm much better at standing up to the HV Fraser is a whopping 10 lbs 5 oz (since he was big at birth) but kids in our family all are small for the first few years (DS1 is at the 9th percentile) so I expect Fraser to fall off his curve over the first four months and end up somewhere near where his brother was.

No projectile vomit here, but I did get poo down my top and into my bra today. Uggh!

hoggle - good to hear from you and hope you're recovering from the birth okay.

aberdeenhiker · 19/07/2008 16:41

How did I miss the whole last page?

Rolf - both garlicgate and kumbayah are making me laugh!

goingfor3 - I think I ovulated earlier this week (at 6 weeks) so I suspect my period is coming too. Definitely not fair, and I'm definitely feeding through the night! Anyways, fortunately we've no chance of getting pregnant and I'm getting a coil fitted on Tuesday.

PiggyPenguin · 19/07/2008 16:51

Ok, poo in the bra is officially not good. I've had vomit in mine, but poo is worse!

TGF - Jamie occasionally has evenings where he is up for 5-7 hours at a time. In the end he is incredibly fractious and overtired and just can't get to sleep. I am trying to get him into a routine of sleeping for a short period, feeding, being awake for a short period etc to combat it, but sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

About the breast fussing, he also does this loads (which is partly why very reluctant to introduce bottles etc) I think it is partly when he is tired and finding it hard to settle, occasionally wind, and sometimes he is just not that hungry. Oh, and sometimes he needs to do a really big poo and just can't focus on anything else...

katyjo · 19/07/2008 17:08

aberdeen - Wow I've only managed vomit in my bra, poo is quite an acheivement! Mia was only 9lb 7oz last week so in the 25th centile and she was spot on the 50th when she was born, I have a wobble every so often when I think there is something wrong, but she seems quite happy but I'm not looking forward to getting her weighed, I feel like the hv are waiing to get involved.
I'm getting a coil fitted on friday, what type are you having and have you had it done before - I'm not looking forward to it!

Rolf lol at garlicgate! Would have no idea how to open the computer, let alone fix it, do the kids know CPR before you start!

thegreenfairy I nearly drove myself demented trying to get Hamish to follow Gina fords routine, but gave up when he was about 6 weeks as he wasn't cooperating. When he was about 8/9 weeks he just naturally seemed to fall into a routine and I tweeked it a bit and he started sleeping 12 hours (with an 11pm dreamfeed) at about 11/12 weeks.

I haven't done anything with Mia, just let her do her own thing and she has been sleeping for stretches of 7 hours the last few nights. All I'm saying is don't stress about it I think once their feeding settles down a bit they fall into a pattern naturally. Despite the horror stoies you hear, Storm will sleep well soon.

katyjo · 19/07/2008 17:12

Oh and Mia fussing when feeding as well, usually when she really hungry/tired/needs a poo/windy and sometimes when my milk comes out too fast. I have been expressing a bit before I feed her which seems to help combat the wind and helps her latch on easy (really big nipples). Cos when she fusses she really makes a mess of my nipples, how sore is it when they grab your nipples?! Maybe I should cut her fingernails!

Rolf · 19/07/2008 17:53

Glad you and Fraser are both better, AberdeenHiker.

I managed to get the computer case open (so proud), prodded some cables and got rid of some of the scary dust balls but it's still not working. It's got lots of photos and other docuemnts on it - even if all I could do was rescue those it would be better than nothing. My brother's job is exactly that (recovering things that people have tried to hide on their computers) so hopefully I'll be able to persuade him to have a look at it. Poor bloke gets a bit sick of being asked numpty PC questions, I think.

DD2 is having huge sleeps around this time so is still going to bed late. Because it's such a busy time of day anyway, I find it difficult to do anything about it. Think she's starting to smile at me .

SA and TGF - do either of you know if there are time issues regarding hip scans? DD2's isn't until September - they could have fitted her in earlier but said so long as it was before 6 months it was fine, and September will be so nuch easier for me. She wasn't breech for long but obviously it needs to be checked out.
