SNORT at the baby walker & bouncer warnings.

DS1 loved his bouncer he walked at 9 months, so thank goodness that slowed him down, eh? He started climbing trees at 2.5yo, is 8yo now and still climbing anything yup, I can imagine signing him up for physio any day now.

I would keep a bouncer just at tip toe length, though, ideally, it does make sense to think the babies shouldn't be able to put too much stress/weight on their feet just yet.

Otherwise, I can understand the warnings if you end up with a child charging around the house, but walkers are more useful than that...

We used our walker like a cheap, folding mobile high chair.

DD actually walked independently (10months) before her toes could touch the floor while sitting in the walker.

DS2 could just about reach the ground with his tip toes in the walker -- then he started walking before 11 months. Otherwise, he was pushed around in it by siblings (great fun to be had by all). So, er, what ankle ligament symptoms should I be looking for?

Just went & bought a walker for DS4, it will double as highchair, place to sit and watch his siblings safely, etc. I'm really looking forward to having it!

Sorry to hear you're down Poblet.

Gill79 · 07/06/2008 07:30

poblet - in what way are you being selfish? Having pain and 'not normalness' in that region is bound to affect how you feel about yourself. I know it's been mentioned (many times) before but my wrinkly tummy really affects how I feel about getting intimate with DP so can imagine how your problems might make you feel. Also it's a shame that the support isn't there when you've made the effort to arrange for it to be there if you need it Can you ask to see another GP / HV?

Malcolm had his third round of jabs yesterday. He was ok in the day afterwards but last night..... I slept only between 2.30 and 4.30 during which time DP sat with him. What a nightmare. He had a temp of 38.4 and was moaning / shouting / grizzling ALL NIGHT even when feeding. Aaarghhh - what a fantastic start to the weekend.

Morningglory are you still around? Was thinking of you as LO went home from the docs sans culottes and sans chemise just as Sebastien did after the meet-up. Had a poo explosion just before his injection (must have seen the needle coming ) which I then had to clean up in public in the weighing room and THEN he wee'd in the scales .

He weighed in bang on 8kg (post poo) so is just about at 90th percentile. He's also now able to pull himself to standing position from sitting by pulling on my fingers. I'm so proud of him, since I've always been such a weakling and physically unexcellent! Definitely gets it from his daddy....

Re the walker debate - I'm not going to get one cause just don't like the idea of them much but do want to get a door bouncer since LO loves bouncing around on his feet so much.

Happy weekend all!

sarahmikeharryandrosie · 07/06/2008 08:02

Poblets i am sorry to hear you are so down, cannot belive you set up help before lo arrived and GP/HV still are not helping or even being on the end of the phone for you, xxxx

Not really mcch ti say at the mo- we are all plodding along- i have the dreaded cold and feel rotten this morning-but the sun is shining so we are going to go in the garden i think.

Both DC's are good and DH is so happy about his new job- he looks like a huge weight has been lifted!!!

Have a great weekend everyone xxxx

leesmum · 07/06/2008 08:17

Sally, isn't it horrible when they scream like that?

Hi ginger how are you?

Poblet it's not right that you aren't getting the help that you need. Is there another GP at your surgery you could see? I don't like to think you are so unhappy BIG HUGS xxx

Sarah it's great that your mum and DH have found work, it must be a big relief for you all.

Gill what do you mean "i'm such a weakling" you climb don't you woman? it's more than i do, i think Malcolm must get his strong legs from you it sound like he's a strong lad. x

lljkk we too put DS1 in his walker quite a bit and he was fine, obviously they have to have some strength in their legs but otherwise they're fine, i must dig mine out of the loft for Ds2 and he can go in it in another month or so.

Well my boobs aren't as bad as i thought they would be, maybe my supply wasn't that great after all and James is a different boy, much more content and not screaming half as much!! AND last night he slept from 7.30 till 5.30 i wont get too excited in case it was a one-off!!

It's looking like it might be a nice day today, things are always better when you can get the DC's outside for some fresh air.

Gill79 · 07/06/2008 08:27

Leesmum I have to try very hard! Have got some strong muscles from climbing but the rest are rubbish. Strong legs come from DP he can charge uphill carrying massive heavy bags and still wait ages for me to catch up (even though he has the skinniest legs you have ever seen - so skinny a physio (PHYSIO ) asked him if he'd been in an accident.......)

BTW great to hear about the jobs Sarah. LO is STILL wide awake but seems happier now. Am off to wake DP up since I've been up for 4 hours already.

saskia71 · 07/06/2008 11:06

Pobeltsmum - Hope you get the right support soon.

Gill79 - 90th centile! - some bonny baby you have there.

lljkk - Intrigued about your use of the walker as a highchair. Does it have brakes or something, and height adjustable for being at the table?

Have a lovely weekend - off to the gym now.

saskia71 · 07/06/2008 11:21

Gill79 - just realised it might not read as intended - well done on the weight (Marcus has just got up to the 50th and I'm pleased).

leesmum · 07/06/2008 11:46

hi saskia how are you, you are putting me to shame by going to the gym!
BTW if any of you want to "join me over here" you are more than welcome..pick a team, any team and get into the football spirit. Please

sallyforth · 07/06/2008 18:25

Hello, have just had a nice day in town meeting friends, LO now exhausted bless him and is sleeping in my arms!

We got that Child Trust Fund voucher thing in the post today. Dont really know whst to do with it but it says on the letter the sooner you decide the more benefit you will get from it - Anyone else decided? if so what did you go for? Spose it doesnt matter THAT much for us as we dont have the spare cash to put anything in ourselves, and are not likely to in the future either! ... hmmm sorry for ramble just thinking "aloud" ...

lol at all this nonsense over baby walkers etc. if they were that dangerous, companies wouldn't sell them. LOs look v cute and happy beetling along. think its like anything, you shouldnt over-use them or let them play unsupervised with them.

leesmum · 08/06/2008 07:24

Sally we put our CTF into the Natwest, i think they bought shares with it. Dp sorted it out and he also puts 10 pound a month into both boys CTF its not a lot but it might go towards a first car when they are 18!!

Where is everyone? we are off to Mansfield in a couple of hours to see DP's family, have a lovely day everyone x

P.S please join in the football fun, i need your support, no-one is interested

Tyaca now i know you are a BIG football fan!

saskia71 · 08/06/2008 09:24

Hi leesmum - I'm very well, how are you? Hope you have a lovely time in Mansfield. I'm off to the gym soon. Yesterday I was watching the goslings by the lake there (after I had finished). There were adorable.

CTF - have done nothing so far, must get Hubby to pick a fund. My Father will pay into it.

tyaca · 08/06/2008 22:11

hi all - just had fab fab fab weekend. went to see old friends, first night away with dd and went so well

our mates live in a proper ye olde village in country. their kids grandad lives down same lane as them - he slept at friends house, we had the run of his cottage and got to drink and relax there with our mates and not worry cause dd upstairs. was hheeaven! they have five yo twins who were so sweet with dd and not a problem that they werent centre of attention for once...

poblets - is there not another gp you can see? good gp is the key to everything and it makes me when peoples' first point of contact lets them down. re the post-birth pain, i really feel for you. i only had second degree tears and no complications afterwards, but the fortnight they took to heal was so awful. i remember thinking that once i could sit comfortably then things had to get better. i cant imagine still having that pain now months later. and, yes echo what gill said -- selfish how?? come rant away.

leesmum, as much totty watch as tactics talk i notice in your thread . i have tried to persuade dh that giving me £20 to stake at the bookies will keep me interested (and thus he can watch as much as he wants). BUT! for some reason he's not buying it and no money is forthcoming.

sally - dd also become progressivley much harder work in the last two weeks. she's always gone down ok-ish at night, but like you, we're now struggling at times and its taking hours. v horrible, isnt it? got to the point last week when her tiredness overspilled into the next day and she stopped going down for her naps in the day - or couldnt stay asleep and would wake after twenty min. she smiles the biggest smiles when you turn up at her cot - but her eyes so red and tired and she's crying again before she's out the bedroom . all i can think is that she's much more of a social animal than she was. the change is enormous. but nighttimes becoming v hard and going into to see her doesnt seem to work, unless we stay in the bedroom with her (which is what we did tonight after a tough hour). dh talking about letting her cry herself out however long that takes and i feel inclined to try as i feel like i'm being a worse parent for keeping on going into her every five minutes. what does everyone think? it feels like such a harsh thing to do but then i dont know what else to do.

Bessie123 · 09/06/2008 10:46

Tyaca - sorry to hear dd having problems sleeping. It's awful when they get so overtired and just cry, and there's nothing you can do for them (except calpol... )

You mentioned before that you wanted some washable nappies. I have 5 tots bots you can try out, if you want. They are washed but unused. I never got round to using that packet of them and dd will have outgrown them within a few weeks anyway, so I can post them to you, if you would like them. If you're interested in recommendations though, I found Kushies much better; dd can go hours in them without a leak.

Leesmum - I had the same problem with breastfeeding. I had to spend about 3 days feeding dd as soon as she was half awake and refusing to give her a bottle. I topped her up with water and with formula using a pipette, but just went completely cold turkey on the bottle. It did work, but it was quite distressing to hear dd crying because she was hungry when I knew I could just give her a bottle and make her feel better. Hope it's all worked out for you now and your boobs aren't too painful.

Princess - you are being v strong and seem like a great mum. Is Ferdie settling down now?

Poblet - hope you're feeling better and you have found some support. You mustn't feel bad about venting; we are all hear to listen to it. Chin up, and please keep venting as much as you need to.

Lovemymum - nice to see you back

Gill - I will swap you a wrinkly tummy for a scarily fat one

xx

thequietone · 09/06/2008 14:17

Hiya,
Was anyone's LO born around 25th Feb? I need some compare and contrast really. He's sucking like crazy on his fist and watching me eat like a hawk. DS1 wasn't like this for another 2 months.
Also, is anyone's baby sitting up yet? I'm trawling pics of DS1 as their birthdays are only 2 days apart, so I can compare them so easily, but they seem SO different!!

Hope all is well with the Feb 2008 girls!

alkar · 09/06/2008 16:04

Finally managed to get back on MN and catch up with everyone. Toe is much better and I think I'll try driving tomorrow. I'm not one to sit and mope especially when there is so much to do here - the builders have gone so the house needs sorting, I've done 4 loads of washing today. Its lovely having carpet again although there is still so much dust

DS is sat in his babywalker nest to me now and he loves it in there. Both me and my sister had one, I don't think they are that bad as long as you're watching them.

Poblets - vent away, its easier on here than in RL sometimes

Gill - Malcolms temp went up a lot, I would've been stressing. Daniels temp was high for a couple of days after his 3rd lot of jabs last week, they must be bad ones.

Leesmum, sounds like you made the right decision with the feeding

Sally we have put our CTF voucher in a family investments ethical account, we don't have an ethical account tho so probably won't make much difference!

Hi

Have heard that Lucy is in her new house, moved in over the weekend.

Have just had a phonecall asking me to go in for a job interview on wednesday. Am hoping it'll be ok, job is local (10min walk) unlike my current. And I believe the hours are more flexible. So I'm hoping it'll be a better chat, than the one I had with my area manager last week.

Alkar-congrats on weightloss

Thequietone-DD was born on 29th, and enjoys putting both hand in her mouth at mo and having a good old chew on them.

rozzyraspberry · 09/06/2008 20:50

Hi everyone. Got back today from a lovely weekend away with my boys!! Ds1 and ds2 had a fantastic time and came home thoroughly shattered!

Poblets - sorry you're feeling low. I echo what some others have said - if your gp is not being helpful can you see someone else? Could your dh go to the doctors with you? As awful as it is him going and saying he's noticed a difference in you might help in getting something done. It's worrying that you can't get the support you need - there must be lots of new mums who end up having to deal with this themselves.

Lljkk - lol at lo's siblings pushing him round in the baby walker. That's one of the reasons I probably won't get ours out this time. Ds1 and ds2 are not exactly the calmest of children - they'd probably want to race him around the wooden floors like a racing car.

My lo is also on a huge chewing stint at the moment. He's always been a big hand chewer but is chewing our shoulders, has been lunging on dhs hands and chewed my nipple yesterday (drew blood - ouch!). He's 17 weeks today - it's funny to think that I started weaning ds1 around this age (that was the advice at the time). With hindsight he wasn't ready and ds3 is still doing fine on just milk. He's still up a couple of times a night but always has been so it's not as if he's been sleeping through and started getting up again iykwim.

He has his final set of immunisations on Wednesday. He was ok after the first 2 but I know these are the worst ones. Sounds like your lo had a hard time Gill - is he ok now?

Anyway sounds like the washing machine has stopped so I'd better go and get ANOTHER load of washing on from our weekend away!!

gingermumi · 09/06/2008 21:00

Hey ladies hope all ok.

Sarah, hope new jobs went well, excellent to get sorted so quickly

Poblet- hows things? You must be good to yourself, is there a friend you can talk to in rl? Doesn't sound like medical profession are being much help, can you see a different doctor? And you've always got us!!!

Swimming was so much fun, ds loved it and was totally at home in the water, he even managed to float on his back- he just spread out like he in bed and chilled with his hands behind his head - he looked so funny that everyone laughed at him 'cos he looked so relaxed!

Christening was yesterday - it was lovely (except for pil in law who walked out - we don't really know why yet but they do it for most family occassions including bil's wedding!)- perhaps it's an attention thing. Mil left without saying bye- i had to shout down the drive after her! Everyone else had a fab time, we had loads of friends and family in the garden with all the children too, it was really good fun. Service was very family centred too which was lovely. Of course weather made a huge difference, i love big occasions like that, when everyone in your life gets together- our wedding was like that too, a mish mash of different people and lots of kids! Mad but great!

Had to go into work today from 11.15 to 4.30- it was very stressful, my mum had ds- he wanted double boobie when i got in! I think he found it much easier than i did! Am not looking forward to it at all, only a few more weeks left

Am off to up my cuddle quota as i have missed out today!

Take care all!

gingermumi · 09/06/2008 21:02

Have just read that back - looks like an eight year old wrote it! Oh dear! see what going to work has done to me! Am even worse than usual off for that cuddle !!

Haylstones · 09/06/2008 21:08

Hi all, thought I'd pop in quickly and say hello. Just back from a lovely weekend in Devon wherer we spent most of the days at the beach then the evenings at the kids club and disco- classy stuff! Ds loved it and the lack of routine didn't upset him too much, thankfully.
We saw our GP tonight who said there is nothing to worry abotu with ds's weight. He is just a big boy and he is definitely developingwell. Am reassured now!
Thequietone, my ds was born on the 24th Feb and has started showing an interest in everything including food but I think this is just a phase and doesn't mean he's ready for weaning. He's still settling on breastmilk even if he isn't sleeping through (yet )so I'm waiting until as close to 26 weeks as possible. Re the babywalkers, I'm definitely not getting one. we didn't have one for dd and fwiw I think there is some basis to the idea that they are not recommended. Some countries (Canada for definite)have actually banned them from a safety point of view and the development issue. Dd had one that spun round but she couldn't walk in it- think it's the Graco Entertainer- and it was fantsatic. Her feet were flat on the floor and it kept her occupied for hours. I should dig itoutof the garage for ds soon...
Off to catch up on the weekend's washing etc. Sweet dreams everyone

violeta · 09/06/2008 22:24

Hi all,
It's been ages and ages since I posted anything here, but when I've had a moment (with dd in my arms sleeping as she often won't go in the basket during the day) I've caught up on everyone's news.

Poblet: I haven't been completely okay down below since the birth either - I get pains every now and then, particularly when I've been standing still for a while. I got the GP to refer me to the gynaes at the hospital and I may have to be restitched... Not fun. Anyway, if you haven't already it could be a good idea to get the specialists to have a look - before I got referred numerous midwives and two GPs had had a look and they hadn't seen that things hadn't healed properly.

DD's weight seems to be getting better slowly. Put it this way, I'm waiting for her to wake up at night now rather than set the alarm so she fed every 3/4 hrs or so at night. She's on the 2nd centile, little for sure but amazingly long. I went to a b/f group today and a couple of 5 month olds were shorter than her (though a damn sight wider!). I think it's her length that makes people think she's little.
thequietone: DD was born on the 26th, and yes loves to stick fingers, fist or whatever falls in her mouth. Trouble is that I know it's a hunger cue too so I get paranoid she's hungry! She's an absolute joy though - I had no idea it was possible to have so much love for someone.

Has anyone else had this weird thing of waking up at night and suddenly wondering where DD/DS is? I have this sinking sensation that she's not in my arms (feeling I've fallen asleep after feeding her or something) and then of course I look over and she's sleeping blissfully in the basket, hands behind her head, oblivious to my panicking!

Have a good night all.

Gill79 · 09/06/2008 22:59

I have also dreamt that I forgot I had a baby and went to work, leaving her home alone
