Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Caz10 · 30/04/2008 12:56

great news lizzer!

my friend is just weaning herself off of thumb sucking...at 32!! no physical probs as a result though, she is just embarrassed!

claraquitetirednow · 30/04/2008 13:09

Hi Kelbel
I started with a little bit of baby rice, probably about three or four teaspoons on the first day, about the same the next day. I feed her at lunchtime only at the moment. Then I graduated onto some purees - carrot, sweet potato, pear and apple. You can of course buy them all ready-made but I have made my own as it doesn't take long to whizz up the small amount they need at this age. I usually give her a bit of milk, then about four of five (small) spoonfuls of puree, which I often mix in with baby rice too, then the rest of her milk. In a week or so I will probably start giving her breakfast too - but will need to reduce the amount of milk she gets (we are gradually aiming towards 5 bottles a day, at the moment she is on 5 and a half).
When she gets to 6 months-ish I will probably start giving her more finger foods as well as "chunkier" food (eg mashed up rather than pureed).
I hope this helps, I am not an expert, just saying what I am doing/did with dd2. Lots of people on here MN) will have their own opinions of weaning but ultimately it really is a chocie for you to make when you start/how much to give/how to do it.
Good luck!

Lizzer · 30/04/2008 13:50

OMG!!!! So its a bit of a lifetime habit then!!!

KB, yes we did what claraq did re weaning, i was confused too by the teaspoon of dry or slop! Ds loves his purees and rice but can't wait til the finger food stage

Amani · 30/04/2008 15:06

Hello,

Hope you all are well.

Not been on for a while as DD2 ear infection come back again and am finding it really tiring to cope with a demanding toddler and a sick baby.

On top of that DD1 nursery have increased their fees substantially and at the moment DD1 goes two sessions a week which is not too bad. But when both her and DD2 are in nursery (when I return to work Aug/Sep) we will feel the impact of the rise, so been trying (among the madness) to find another suitable nursery for the two of them, as waiting lists can be long....

skidaddle · 30/04/2008 15:19

Hi everyone,

Lizzer - fantastic news about your DS, you must be so relieved

meme - good to see you back on and so sorry to hear about your PND. Maybe your HV or GP could talk to your DHto try and get him to understand PND because you need his support more than anyone's. Great your DD is doing so well though

clara - that article made me cry at the first paragraph so am going to postpone reading the rest of it until I am alone (currently in a shared office)! You're right, it puts our trivial little moans and groans into perspective. Noah is absolutely gorgeous as well

clairey - i would have come to your nappuccino as well -sounds like a fantastic idea. You are very brave organising one like that when you don;t even know who might turn up

Hi insy - good to see you back as well although sorry to hear about you lack of sleep. Am intrigued to try a bum genius now - how much do they cost

caz10 and awen - that video sounds very interesting - might see if I can get hold of a copy as I want to try BLW too although here is a confession - i don't want to start DS on solids because he is my little baby and he only needs me and once he is on food he won't be so little anymore and wont need just me - isn't that shameful? I can just about cope with him growing up if I can be assured that i can have another one... Plus when he starts waking every hour because he is starving I might change my tune!

amani - and awe at your cleaning - I would love to be that clean and organised but DH is such a pig that even if the house is perfect he wrecks it within half an hour, e.g. comes in and chucks his wet swimming towel and trunks on the living room carpet and doesn't pick them up again until he is going for another swim a few days later. I also once came in the door to find a POO in the hallway (DD's not DH's) - i shouted up the stairs, why is there a sh*t on the floor? And he came down grinning, oh yes i meant to clean that up but we were playing this game and I forgot - it had been there for an hour. I bet no-one else's DH is that revolting, challenge opened...

skidaddle · 30/04/2008 15:21

crossed posts amani - sorry to hear DD2's infection is back - will she get some more treatment? I am also dreading nursery fees when I go back. Can't bear to think about leaving DS at all anyway so am sticking my head firmly in the sand and refusing to talk about it atm - would this work for you?

suey2 · 30/04/2008 15:59

oo BT, hope you haven't caught virtual flu!

Caz i am starting to feel better, thanks- could do with some sleep though. Poor wee mite doesn't understand why she can't breathe through her nose. My appetite is tiny- i felt really full after a bowl of soup this lunchtime and i only had weetabix for breakfast. Milk diminishing fast, but at least she is eating less at the mo too, and i have managed to stack some in the freezer.

BouncingTurtle · 30/04/2008 17:25

Poor you suey!
No not flu, migraine brought I think by my iminent period, which so far is 4 days late. Apparently bfing buggers up your cycle, as I used to be regular as clockwork before!

suey2 · 30/04/2008 17:42

gosh, i haven't had a period yet. not looking forward to it

Lizzer · 30/04/2008 17:45

Me neither, but some bf-ers do get them back straight away. So let me get this right BT, you're feeling sicky, have now had a migraine and are 4 days late?

Caz10 · 30/04/2008 18:33

lizzer! any chance BT??! Oh I am SO not broody atm!

BouncingTurtle · 30/04/2008 19:49

Nah... I really don't think so...

I feckin' hope not...

My periods returned I think when ds was 9 weeks old, few people say that bfing makes them very irregular.

insywinsyspider · 30/04/2008 20:31

kebel - we're doing 'food' at 11am just before bf and then at 5pm which is between 3pm and 7pm feed. Only been doing it a week and doing couple of ice cubes of pear in morning and baby rice (one table spoon of rice to 4 of milk) I think he could take more but takes too much patience and ds1 v demanding, he decides to climb something whilst I'm trying to spoon rice several times back into ds2's mouth

skid - you win with gross dh! and bum genius are bout £10.80 each, I have 14 nappies in small and 12 in large so recok I'd need 14 of bumgenius to replace them all - but no takers to buy mine and I can't justify buying more, bumgenius wasn't about when I bought mine

claireybee · 30/04/2008 20:36

LOL BT! Have you managed to complete the deed yet? I remember ds interrupted you that time...

RE Nappies. Tis bumfluff I am an agent for, click on local advisors and you'll see me (well my name anyway!) Awen they aren't much work at all, especially if you are lazy like me and don't bother rinsing or soaking-I do two or three loads of nappies a week and that is with 2 in cloth. Cazzy I like terries too, they scared me to begin with but now I get satisfaction from doing a good fold

Is tomorrow I have to leave ds with my friend while I go to the show-eek! At least he takes the bottle ok now.

Am slightly tho, I normally express in the eve to replace his bedtime feed but the past couple of days have also expressed in the late morning so I have an extra bottle to leave my friend in case she needs it...OMG the difference in colour-the milk I express at night is SO thin compared to the daytime ones. No wonder ds wakes up so much at night if that is what he is getting at bedtime.

Insy you are so strong not feeding ds at night...I go for the path of least resistance which often means feeding him every hour from 2am onwards! Wish I could be more like you but |I am never certain enough that he isnt actually hungry iykwim (if I have fed him an hour before |I do try to settle him without first cos I realise he isn't starving but usually give in)

Sorry if not coherent, am at my parent's as leaving dd here with them and have drunk some VERY good wine. feeling rather tipsy now!

macdoodle · 30/04/2008 20:52

ok how old are those that are on "food" -just cos Lil is sooo not interested - she is 18 weeks on Fri absolutely huuuuge (was 17 and half lbs at 15 weeks)...sleeps through the night (from 8pm to 6am 9 nights out of 10)and is lovely and placid in the day - she does feed fairly frequently in the day (still ex BF) sometimes 2 hrly usually 3hrly and maybe 4 if we are out and about and she is asleep in buggy.....so I reckon we get between 6-8 feeds in during the day (she will persistently only feed from one side just not interested in the other side so sometimes I reckon she is topping up from other side when she feeds again quite quickly)....
Also she is soooo fat that when she is propped up she kinda "melts" like jabba the hut and her head control is pretty good but her double chins get in the way I can't imagine her eating anything TBH - BUT am going back to work 5 weeks monday and not sure whether to push it before then???

kelbel · 30/04/2008 21:10

mac - lo 20 weeks this wek, tried him at 18, but he wasn't interested so didn't push it and realised it was a growth spurt - also ex bf here, no chance of a bottle from the stubborn bugger! started the baby rice yesterday and went down v well! started waking alot! and was rarely going an hour and a half tween feeds during the day.

when can you give yoghurt? random question i know

cazzybabs · 30/04/2008 21:46

BT - POAS...just to shut us up.....would be is terrible? Are you using contrception?

Have an interview for KS co-ordinator job. PANIC PANIC PANIC. Haven't had an interview in years. Have nothing to wear (as all the shops are full of summer clothes)...

Lizzer · 30/04/2008 21:51

MacD, oh bless her! Your description sounds so sweet, I would say don't push the food thing, she's always been a laid back little lady iirc, my (not so)LO has been happy on solids for a while but he seemed so ready for it, trust your instincts on this one

KB, apparently petit filous is from 4 months..says so on the pots..however if you read the ingredients there's sugar and other (more worrying) crap in them, fruit pots are posiibly better but tbh i've given ds one or two yoghurts in his time

Clairey (hic) yes, i've had a lurvely glass of wine or two meself tonight ( burp)

macdoodle · 30/04/2008 21:54

Its funny cos I started DD1 on solids at about 15 weeks (was so desperate to get her to sleep)...this one is complete opposite she'd probably fall asleep in highchair if she could sit up long enough ....will try and chill and not push it till she seems ready! Ta

Lizzer · 30/04/2008 22:00

Cazzy, LOL I want the details too! Poor BT

Wow, an interview! I would go for smart slim pants and a long shirt layered with a waistcoat or crop jacket-loving the slimming qualities of them atm and seem to be loads of (cheap) ones around...The nearest i got to work was being told to hoik my ass in to my placement school as they may be looking for part-time teaching assistant position, this was an insider tip as i bumped into a teacher in town today-so excited as it means i won't have to think about returning to the deli (much as i love it, the pay etc is crap)

cazzybabs · 30/04/2008 22:00

I think you know when they are ready because dd3 is no where no ready.

Mind you I am not ready either ...they are all growing up tooo fast!

kelbel · 30/04/2008 22:29

wednesday must be vio night, ive joined the club

BouncingTurtle · 01/05/2008 07:49

Wed did manage to finish when ds woke up crying and we used a condom.
It would be a bit if a disaster financially as we are counting on me going back to work to start paying bills and not sure we can afford to out two in nursery atm. I actually earn a bit more than DH so me being on maternity leave is meaning we are struggling a bit - the surplus money I had saved up when I was still working has run out, so dh is now sending me his surplus to pay the bills, as they all come out of my account. We want to be able to manage the next few months without borrowing any money...

cazzybabs · 01/05/2008 11:16

God I just looked at Evie - she is such a big girl now!!! How did she get to be so big? Where has the time gone?

becklespeckle · 01/05/2008 13:54

Hi all! Sorry have not been on for a while, the hours, days and weeks just seem to fly by, where does the time go? Evie is 16 weeks now, how did that happen?! Firstly Happy Birthday to my fellow Taureans Bouncing and Louise! Hope you had good ones and were spoiled rotten! Mine was Friday and DH got me a Hot Air Balloon Ride! Am so excited! Will probably go in the summer so get a really good view!

Amani, sorry to hear your DD is poorly again, sounds like you are having a tough time at the moment. Is hard too if you feel you don't get much support/a break. Are you anywhere near to me? I do good listening, cake and coffee if you are! BTW, completely agree with you on GHDs, they are the best!

Skid, my DH is also incredibly laid back with the kids, misses mealtimes, gives them crisps and biscuits half hour before tea (I give fruit if they are 'starving'), no sun cream, leaves them to their own devices, etc. Would never leave poo though about though!

Bouncing, Evie is just the same as Daniel at baby massage! She kept rolling on to her side to be nosey at the baby next to her while I was supposed to be milking her legs (or something). She was fascinated with the other babies and didn't mind the massage either, she was one of the only ones who didn't cry at any point. We all sat round and fed our babies afterwards too which was nice.

Clairey, your DH's wage rise may not affect your tax credits depending on how much it is. We get the lowest amount so our income would have to double to actually affect them. I also don't believe that babies need to be on formula to sleep through, Evie has always done 6 hours at night and from 10 weeks has done 10 and she is exclusively BF. I just think all children are different and you should BF for as long as you and your LO are happy to be that 1 week, 1 year or beyond. As for paperwork, I have a plastic folder on my computer desk for things which need doing or following up. I usually leave it out where I can see it and have dates written on things for when they need following up/paying. Can't currently see it under the huge mass of mess on the desk though!

Macdoodle, I have also noticed my weight creeping up although my clothes are still fitting the same so I am wondering if I am heavier because I am producing more milk? [hopeful emoction]. I do agree with Awen that you don't necessarily lose weight BFing, I haven't and didn't with my boys. Lost a fair bit quite quickly after stopping though so I wonder if your body stores fat as a reserve to help feed baby?

Clara, your friend is amazing, her article made me cry.

Mememummy, hiya! Welcome back, glad your LO is thriving!

Ambi, DD also thrashes around and pulls off while feeding, I am sure it is her teeth as she is sooo dribbly and her gums are all lumpy now, I find a bit of Bonjella on her gums just before feeding (or once she starts thrashing) is good and I gave her calpol too once as she was sobbing with the discomfort and being hungry.

Lizzer, yay! So glad he doesn't need his op, such fab news! I have a thumb sucker here too, Haven't started solids yet but she does try and slip her thumb in at the same time as taking her milk!

Kelbel, I think that Petit Filous have 4 months on them as that is the earliest you should start weaning but I think the recommendation for yogurts is 6 months as they are dairy.

Thanks to you all for your grobag advice! DD is in a 1 tog one and I did think that just a long sleeved vest under (as per the advice thing) didn't seem much in a 20 degree room! Have put a sleepsuit on her instead and she seems fine!

Evie laughed for the first time yesterday! DS1 was dancing and chatting to her and she giggled, so cute! Had her 2nd jabs yesterday and she didn't cry! They have given her a runny nose though and she is a very miserable girl today .

I have loads of silly names for Evie although no favorites yet! I call her Squevie, Sqeeves, Missy la Sqeeve, Missy Moo, Sog Monster, Baby Boo, Baby/Sleepy/Nosey Bird, Princess Chunderchops... I could go on!

Anyway, sorry for the long long post, I must try and keep up a bit more, make it my 'me' time!
