Welcome March Mums (and late Feb/early April Mums!) from the March 2008 threads.

big, not bog = one handed typing!

MarchNowFebMum · 05/04/2008 19:55

Hilarious thread here

Had six week check up Thursday and all is well. Was fairly quick - just baby's stats and a quick feel of my stomach, no pelvic exam. - LO is 10 lbs (I thought to myself that's still smaller than MB's George!) which is great. Only issue is that LO's 'hip is clicking' according to dr and has to be ultrasounded (word?) on Monday to see if it is dispalced. Apparently hip displacement is common in girls (and breech which she wasn't). I was surprised how concerned they were about it when they don't routinely check for so many other things!

Got a nod in the sex department - dh's birthday is Tuesday, maybe I'll make that his present, har, har.

e14 sanam also was very sleepy in the beginning and only ate every 4-5 hours, sometimes 6. she took 2 weeks to get back up to birth weight and is excellent weight now as per above.

this is obviously personal preference/philosophy but I never woke her up to feed even though was told to by mw, etc. if i woke her feed was very unproductive/faffy, which frustrated me, affected milk supply etc. we stuck her to her schedule and she eventually started drinking more milk more frequently.

echo comments on getting lots of rest and upping eating/drinking water, good luck!

"Never wake a sleeping baby" as the old saying goes, personally I adhere to it as Tilly likes a long sleep.

I took Tilly into London yesterday to show her off to my colleagues and DP's office. Really enjoyed going into town so if anyone fancies a Central London meet up count me in! Can't believe she is three weeks old now, it's flown by.

MNFM - are you supposed to wait for sex? Or is that if you have had a v birth? I have done the deed a couple of times (had emcs) - should I not until I have had my check up?

turtle23 · 07/04/2008 09:53

MMH- hats off to you, lady. You're doing well to even contemplate sex. Aren't you meant to hold off after a cs, though?
My poor LO just seems to be greedily grabbing every thing going round. Off to GP as he has oral thrush now. Feel so guilty.

e14mum · 07/04/2008 10:00

don't feel guilty turtle! I thought oral thrush was not uncommon.
sex? my body would implode at even the thought of it at the moment.

OnlyOnePairOfHands · 07/04/2008 10:42

Hello all,

spugs · 07/04/2008 11:31

not even contemplating sex over here yet! though the dh is, bless him. i had to explain that dd3 is only 2 weeks old and im still bleeding so its the last thing on my mind.

missing my heels - you lucky thing having such a good sleeper. does she not wake for feeds? ismay sleeps practicaly 24 hours a day and just wakes every 3 hours during the day for a bottle and then has a feed at 1am and 5 am which i reckon is quite good going. shes taking a lot less milk during the night as well so hopefully it wont be long till we can drop one of them.

modusalk - cna you not feed them whilst there sitting in bouncy chairs?

weve got lots of snow up here and its freezing, unfortunatly im getting a new front door fitted so the house is freezing as well.

turtle - oral thrush is very common so dont feel guilty, hope it gets cleared up soon

MissingMyHeels · 07/04/2008 11:56

Turtle - don't feel guilty, it's just one of those things! We all have 18yrs + of feeling guilty about various things, don't use it all up now! Hope Pascal is all better soon.

OOPOH - I didn't even think about it, they really should tell you if they need you to abstain! Will hold off for the time being. Plus need to get contraception sorted, don't want to make a sibling for Tilly! Good luck getting your routine sorted, I'm loosely following the Baby Whisperer which seems to be working fairly well now I've managed to get past the patronising tone!

spugs - That is also excellent sleeping! I find Tilly cluster feeds from 8-11 so I think she is just tanked up so hence the sleeping through.

I'm finding that I have to DO something every day or I get really bored and stroppy so have planned lunch for everyday this week apart from today. Might force myself to go food shopping this afternoon [yawn] and try to find some local baby groups!

OnlyOnePairOfHands · 07/04/2008 12:33

MMH- I'm currently dipping in and out of the Baby Whisperer too, also trying to ignore phrases such as "your little love bucket" I thought she was referring to my fanjo!!

Do I just let him scream betewen feeds though? He doesn't go 3 hours, never mind 4. He's yelling now and I really don't know what's up. He finished a feed at 12, has been burped and has a clean nappy. He's tired but won't settle. AAAGGGGHHHHHHH

skidoodle · 07/04/2008 12:45

Hi all. I had a baby. EMCS on good friday. She is 17 days old and just beautiful. Now she is old enough to kick me in the wound. I'm so proud of this particular development I am knackered and kind of cranky today.

Nice to read how you're all doing. V. jealous of those doing 1-hand typing. We had latching issues that are only just being resolved so right now for me feeding is all I'm doing when she's feeding. Sometimes I get to go online on the iPod, but rarely get to join in - no-handed typing for me.

congratulations to all whose babies have been born since I went in to be induced.

sk

turtle23 · 07/04/2008 12:46

I know it's silly to feel guilty. But he talipes he has because my uterus was too small. The thrush he has because I had thrush that wouldn't go away when I gave birth. The tongue tie is male hereditary, so I'll let DH take that one, but nothing he has has come from anything but us. On the other hand, he's gaining weight like a piglet, sleeps well and is dead cute .

MissingMyHeels · 07/04/2008 13:02

OOPOH - It drives me nuts when she says things like that, and referring the reader as "luv" and "ducky"

When Tilly has done E and A and is refusing to do S I swaddle her and put her down with her dummy, for her, this tends to work and she'll nod off eventually. Although sometimes she just wants to be cuddled and it doesn't work!

Congrats Skidoodle!

Turtle - he's adorable!

merryberry · 07/04/2008 13:22

congratulations skidoodle!
and turtle, your baby looks just like a Pascal, he really does - lovely!

my nearly 4 week old was lined up next to a 4 month old in the library this am. gg looks new-baby, but was almost the size of the 4 mth old! i had another thread running about big babies a while back, and apparently i can look forward to busybodies asking me why he isn't at school, aged 3, if he carries on growing along his birth weight height/weight.

just waiting for MW to sign me off. will laugh in her face if she suggests sex, this year, sleep is the new sex, as far as i'm concerned. though we did manage a lovely random, 'where did that come from?' snog at the back of that crouch end moneky restaurant on saturday, we must have been that excited about the impending onion rings and no washing up....

Jaysfinished · 07/04/2008 20:34

merry, how big is LO now?

modsaluk · 07/04/2008 21:37

good evening all, just feeding Harry at the moment. The twins seem to be getting into a kind of routine. Millie is still been sick after some feeds though and Harry has had a few turns to be sick too.

I too could not even think about sex at the moment, after my first child i remember feeling like a teenager again having sex for the first time as was so nervous it would hurt or feel the same etc. This time i am far too tired so is Hubby.

He is going back to work tomorrow i am so not looking forward to it.

I have tried feeding them in their bouncers and it seemed to go ok until Millie was sick all over her chair. But it is a way forward if they both want feeding together, dont think i could leave them to cry even though i know it does not harm them etc just so distressing when they are screaming for a bottle whilst it warms never mind for fifteen / twenty minutes whilst i feed the other.

The midwife is coming tomorrow so we can see how much weight they have put on, we think Harry has put on quite a lot of weight can tell by looking at him really but Millie is quite dainty so not so easy to tell, i think they will discharge me tomorrow.

merryberry · 08/04/2008 07:46

i don't know jay, i;ve sort of got tired of the minor celebrity and everyone gagging to know how i manage to walk after the birth, and so am avoiding the baby clinic. I think i will go next week, as its school break here andwe've nothing else to do. it's clear he's gaining to look at him and hold him. i love those mornings/nights where you look at babies and you can see they have inflated while asleep!

Jaysfinished · 08/04/2008 08:41

Sorry, didnt mean to pry!! Was just wondering as, Cooper, lost a fair bit in the first week but then rapidly put that plus more on , and is now just under 13lbs, thing is though, where your 'little' one looks like a big baby, Cooper just doesnt look like he weighs that much, its very strange.....

merryberry · 08/04/2008 09:11

oh you girls are allowed to ask away. it's the men who are doing my head in when they ask, and look at me speculatively trying not to stare at my crotch! women just ask, was it CS, did you tear?

GG lost 11 oz in his first 4 days, but had put it back again in 12 days from birth. and those 11oz still weren't 10% of his birth weight, bless him, giganto babe.

Jaysfinished · 08/04/2008 14:54

same as Cooper, 11oz in the first four days! how funny!

spugs · 08/04/2008 15:26

congratulations skidoodle my little one was born the same day

turtle - pascale is beautiful

i have a blooming coldsore in the corner of my mouth which i think is spreading across my top lip!! im now terrified of giving it to ismay as im sure i read somewhere its dangerous (i can feel a health thread coming on). zovirax seems to be making no difference to it so im not sure what to do, might try those patch things.

also have tried out sling today, my friend lent it to me, its a tricot something or other. one of the really long ones you wrap round yourself 10 million times. was really comfy and izzy seemed to like it. were off on holiday to the lakes tomorrow for a few days so think we'll have to give it a proper testing

monthlymayhem · 08/04/2008 16:16

Thks Merry for the colic tip, yes my resolve not to use a dummy lasted all of 5 days

One of my newly healed nipples has cracked again so am using a nipple shield on the sore boob for the first time today. I know they're often frowned upon, but I reckon if i only use it for a day or so until healed then it's better than giving up bf... If anyone has any +ve or -ve experience of using them I would be interested to hear!

As for sex, as much as I would like to I'm too much of a coward that it will hurt and so going to give it a bit more time...

MissingMyHeels · 08/04/2008 16:55

MM - nipple shields were the only thing that kept my bfeeding, DD couldn't latch on to me until about a week ago. Am still ffing her a few times a day but the nipple shields were a life saver for me, if you think they're going to help you then sod what anyone else says (I had MW's frown upon me using them), your breasts and your body and you don't need to justify it.

The only thing I found was that it took a long time to feed as it's not quite as efficient as them being on you so becareful not to let your ducts get blocked - I expressed a little to ensure this didn't happen.

HolidaysQueen · 08/04/2008 19:17

Anyone got any advice on combined ff/bf? For the third day in a row my DS (8 days old) has been cluster feeding in the evening and it is getting a bit much for me - we're thinking of introducing just one formula feed to give me a break in the evening if he keeps going like this, but I don't want to affect my milk supply if I can help it.

Basically he was 4.1kg at birth, lost 400g due to a few problems at first but has put on 150g in just 3 days now my milk is in and boy am I feeling it!!! He's just fed at 2pm, 4pm, 5.30pm and 6.30pm - draining both breasts the first three feeds (delatched himself, definitely in that milked-up stupor each time so I'm pretty sure he was sated for a short while at least) and then just topped up at 6.30. I had to come upstairs to decompress for a short while as I was getting wound up but can hear DH soothing a squawking baby downstairs and feel like I am needed again...

The upside is that he has only woken once at night the last two nights so this cluster feeding is working but I just find it physically and mentally exhausting.

Any tips?

turtle23 · 08/04/2008 19:36

thank you, spugs.
