I read somewhere it can take up to 15 tries for them to get used to the taste of something new 🤦‍♀️

We had salmon, sweet potato and Zucchini puree today, she loved that but still no go with avocado

CherLW · 03/03/2022 18:12

@MrsTD88 I hope Jesse will be a good eater, just want to give it the best chance he won’t be picky!

@AdventuresAwait I always think about choking also.. I’m just trying not to worry and just remember that it’s highly unlikely. It’s soooo overwhelming!
Green beans is a good one, I’ll have to try that. Jesse only liked the broccoli so far I think 🤦🏻‍♀️.

In the cook books for 6+ months they make pastry pin wheels with courgette and savoury flap jacks but I feel is it to early to give him that? How many single veggies/fruit do I need to give him until I start mixing things 🤷🏻‍♀️ My mum is making cottage pie over the weekend and we’re visiting so I’m going to mash some of that up and try it. I’ve got the timing wrong too a few times, he also gets a bit bored in the high chair.. hopefully when he likes eating more he will like the chair more! 🤞🏼

@CherLW, the green beans are good because she can hold and chew on them. Then she gets a bean out and I can see her moving it around her mouth. She's not swallowed one yet though... they came out with water she spat out lol

I don't know how many different foods to give before mixing either but I think things I've read say you can from 6 months. Think I'll just do some more on their own, especially the allergens, and then mix.

I found this helpful today: www.whattoexpect.com/first-year/feeding-baby/baby-led-weaning/

And also re read one of the chapters in a book I've got to try and increase my confidence again xx

CherLW · 03/03/2022 18:35

@AdventuresAwait definitely going to try those.. thanks for the tip! Jesse isn’t a fan of th water either 😂 he has swallowed some tho which is at least something.

That’s what I’ll do, I’ll get some of the allergens done and then I’ll start mixing.

I’ll have a look at that link now 😊 thank you x

It's been so long since I've done the weaning thing. Can we give tap water from 6 months or is it cooled boiled? I can't remember! Also do you sterilise their cups?

AdventuresAwait · 03/03/2022 22:04

Hi @MrsTD88, I've been giving cooled, boiled water but think I read that tap water can be given, though one book suggested filtering it. I'm not sure though.

I googled about sterilising and what I saw said cups, bowls and spoons etc do not have to be sterilised, just washed thoroughly. Only teats or sippy cup lids etc need to be. Here's a photo of one I saw. What do others do?

MrsTD88 · 03/03/2022 22:16

Thank you @AdventuresAwait how are you storing the cooled boiled water? Do you put it in the fridge or let it go to room temp? That makes sense about the bowls etc. I had both my babies at Forth Valley hospital. I need to dig out all the weaning stuff my HV gave me about weaning. Planning on starting in about 2 weeks.

AdventuresAwait · 03/03/2022 22:29

@MrsTD88 I just let it go to room temperature but I'm a first time mum and not sure if I'm doing it right! Going to relook about whether tap water is OK and maybe get a filter jug if so.
When I click on the link in the photo it actually downloads a booklet. Maybe that's what you have? Are you doing baby led weaning? Finger foods or purees? Xx

AdventuresAwait · 03/03/2022 22:34

@MrsTD88, I just came across this which looks quite helpful:
www.nhs.uk/conditions/baby/weaning-and-feeding/drinks-and-cups-for-babies-and-young-children/

MrsTD88 · 03/03/2022 22:52

@AdventuresAwait oh fab, thanks. Will have a look at that tomorrow. I'm planning on doing a mix of purees and finger foods for the first few weeks then hoping to move on to solely finger foods/baby led weaning but I'm keeping an open mind. I met a mum at a class a few weeks ago and her 7 month old won't take to food at all. How are you finding baby led weaning?

AdventuresAwait · 03/03/2022 23:02

@MrsTD88, ok so far I think. She's enjoying exploring the foods and putting them to her mouth which I think is the main aim at this stage (we just started this week). But I've not been great at planning so it's been hit and miss. I was unsure of which foods to introduce but now have a list to work through! Going to make a plan for next week so will update again then xx

GWhiteley · 05/03/2022 08:00

I tried giving Alyssa just tap water & it didn't really agree with her, so we're sticking to cool boiled water for the time being. She's full of a cold at the moment & got covid so not really trying the food thing properly just yet. She's had a taste of my dads banana & liked it though!

GWhiteley · 05/03/2022 08:01

@AdventuresAwait what sorts of things are on your list?

AdventuresAwait · 05/03/2022 08:40

@GWhiteley, that's good to know. I might stick to the cooled boiled water for now. Sorry Alyssa has covid. I hope she's feeling better very soon.

I am actually typing up the list of first foods this evening as it's quite long! I could then share it here if helpful? It is a list of things I've read that they can have from 6 months. I just had info in different books, apps or websites and needed it all together to make it easy for me to tick off and also to give me ideas!

GWhiteley · 05/03/2022 08:57

If you're happy to share that would be great. All I've got so far is carrot & broccoli!

AdventuresAwait · 05/03/2022 09:44

@GWhiteley, yes I'll do it later and pop it on. Our little one likes green beans and parsnip! That's what we did after broccoli and carrot xx

AdventuresAwait · 05/03/2022 12:21

We also had weetabix today which seemed to be enjoyed!

AdventuresAwait · 05/03/2022 22:30

Sorry @GWhiteley it's been such a busy day and I've not finished it yet! I will get to it but also, the book 'Simple and Safe Baby Led Weaning' lists foods and how to serve them which may be helpful.

GWhiteley · 06/03/2022 05:50

Thanks @AdventuresAwait I'll have a look.

I'm still breastfeeding exclusively as although Alyssa is now 6 months she's got covid & a really nasty cough & cold so didn't want to start weaning her until it's gone. However, because she can't breath through her nose very well it's changed how she sucks & now both nipples are ruined to the point I'm dreading each 2 hr feed & don't think I can take much more. When she's with me & upset all she wants to do is feed & she also feeds to sleep with me as well but I'm in agony. Sorry just had to get it off my chest

AdventuresAwait · 06/03/2022 07:18

Oh @GWhiteley I'm sorry, that must be tough. Still breastfeeding here and suddenly much more regularly (not sure why) so I'm tired but I can't imagine it if in pain too. Do you use the Lansinoh nipple balm? I haven't used it in months but remember it really helped when my nipples were sore when she was a newborn Xx

CherLW · 06/03/2022 20:50

@GWhiteley sorry to hear about your little one being unwell 😞 fingers crossed she’s getting better quickly. Jesse had a bit of a stage when he would feed differently and it was so painful! I used to apply the nipple cream as often as I could, like before a walk etc so I knew it would have a couple of hours to soak in.

Jesse isn’t loving food but just going to keep giving it… he’s had carrot, broccoli, avocado, banana, strawberry, yogurt, cucumber and a piece of whole meal bread crust.

I wasn’t sure about the sterilising of the sippee cups either! I just give him water from the tap… that he just spits out 🤦🏻‍♀️

Has anyone who feeds their little one to sleep managed to get away from doing that? I don’t mind at the moment but I know eventually it will have to stop

OP posts:
GWhiteley · 07/03/2022 05:52

@CherLW it's excruciating. I dread every feed, and since she's still feeding every 2 hrs each one comes by so fast!

I don't sterilise the sipper cup as such, I do run boiling water over it before each use.

As for the sleep to feed, Alyssa still does this & sometimes I really struggle as she'll have had a good length of Fred but is still awake! So my parents take her & she falls asleep on one of them. I think until I stop breastfeeding altogether her feeding to sleep isn't going to change. If you get any good advice though I'd love to hear it!

AdventuresAwait · 07/03/2022 09:44

@CherLW, I'm still feeding to sleep at night. But not worried about it at the moment. I know that isn't any help, sorry!

Anyone have advice on how to transfer day time naps from a sling/sleeping on me to naps in a cot please? Xx

bewitchingnight · 07/03/2022 10:02

Hello everyone, not posted in a while but have been following along! Went out and bought a high chair yesterday, Clementine is 6 months on Wednesday, can't believe it! Been reading about baby led weaning and excited / nervous to start.

@CherLW I still feed to sleep a lot of the time, I hate all the patting and shushing so happy that feeding still works quite often! But I do try and do at least one wake up in the night with rocking just so I know it can be done. I don't always feed to sleep in the daytime because the feeds don't always line up with naps.

@GWhiteley poor you that sounds awful. Have you tried nipple shields? I used them for about 8 weeks right at the beginning and they really do help whilst you need to heal, the mendela ones are good because they come in different sizes

bewitchingnight · 07/03/2022 10:04

@AdventuresAwait I've been starting with the morning nap and it's been quite successful - I just put her back in her sleeping bag, feed upstairs and then back in the cot for the nap. It's shorter than it would be if she was on me though. I've tried with some other naps in the day which are hit and miss but the morning one has been ok, I guess the sleep associations from the night are still quite strong?
