Hello all!

Welcome Strawberry Lace! I'm a firsttimer too, Rebecca born 13 November (13 days late so I frequent October and November boards!).

I can't remember what everyone's said cos I've not been here since Thursday! Scary! Other than Anya'smum - how are you feeling today? I often feel like DH is criticising me and vice versa - when you get tired I think you don't say things properly, or at least I don't, and then I misunderstand what is said back, and we're all touchy about how well we know how to parent cos in the end it's just trial and error and lots of love! Hope you got some sleep and Anya is a bit better. Can I ask, what is Anya's diagnosis? I must have missed it.

The other news I've retained is that some of you have got jiggy (how?! I had an emerg C-section after only getting 4 cm dilated so no issues at all in the relevant area but I cant think of much more than sleep and food!) and that Ben has slept 12 1/2 hours. Rebecca can go six-seven hours without food but sadly she cant sleep that long - so she will feed at say 9 pm, go to sleep finally at midnight, and wake at three for a feed. But I only get the sleep from midnight to three! Hmm.

Had inlaws here for three days. Nearly killed them on day 1 when they sat around waiting to be waited on with cups of tea and meals and criticised the insomniac tendencies of my daughter ('why doesnt she go to bed at 7 pm?' 'why isnt she in a good routine?' etc) and compared her unfavourably with their other grandchildren (who apparently slept like angels from birth due to good parenting skills) etc. It did improve as the weekend progressed but it was tiring entertaining nonstop and it made bedtime even more fraught (DD resists sleep madly, constantly and crossly).

OK, time to do some muchneeded clothes sorting and so on - havent had chance to do anything all w/e - hope you're all okay and special hugs to Anyasmum and J20 if you're around!

TheLadyEvenstar · 17/12/2007 12:34

i on other hand am desperate for 3-6 mmonth clothes lol

Inzi can def advise about your dad... I can't think of a reason why the back pain is linked to his hernia unless the hernia is causing discomfort and causing him to walk in a funy way thus stressing different parts of his back than normal. However hernias usually don't cause pain. He has been given the right information about the recovery I'm afraid - is there no way he can do less manual stuff while he recovers? He doesn't have to have the surgery. But the reason we recommend it is that a proportion of hernias will go on to become what we call strangulated - where it becomes stuck out sometimes with bits of bowel trapped inside. This is an emergency and he would need it dealt with asap. Basically to have it repaired before this happens is a very straightforward procedure that is usually done as a day case assuming your dad is fit. SO we recommend this to avoid the much more complicated operation that needs to be done if it becomes strangulated. So if your dad is adamant he won't have it done he needs to know to seek medical attetion even if its out of hours if the hernia becomes stuck out and won't go back in or if it becomes much more painful.

Anyasmum sorry to hear you're having a tough time honey. Dh and I had a lot of these 'discussions' when Sam was tiny - he thought I had it easy swanning off o have coffee with my mates and didn't appreciate that its not really like that!!! This time he is a bit more aware of how things are so has been a lot more supportive. You said Anya has achondroplasia didn't you? I am a doc although not in any relevant area I hasten to add... But I do know a little about this so might be able to answer basic questions. WOrth chatting to people who know more about your case though rather than me.

Choc sorry to hear il's were such a pain.

MrsFish at Ben's sleeping!

Hello all else! Got to run as Adam shouting! Back later...

Just a quick hello to say I am still alive! Not feeling too well at the moment. Going to see the Dr today. Been having tummy pain for weeks now and it has been worse the last few days. Hope the Dr can help.

Dareh has been really fussy too - no idea why. Wonder if he is a bit under the weather too or maybe just being a baby!

Hopefully I will catch up on all the posts soon.

AnyasMum07 · 17/12/2007 16:27

Hi. Thanks for all the hugs - it helps just to be able to vent. Feeling better today - dh and I have talked and had a cuddle. Anya's had a much better day too - we're trying waking her from a nap to feed rather than waiting until she wakes herself and it seems to be working. Although we haven't got to the worst part of the day yet so fingers crossed....!

Choc, Anya's got achondroplasia, which is a form of dwarfism. I'm trying to be glad that it's not worse - there are a couple of associated problems that we need to test for and may need correcting over the next few months, but her health/life span/mental capacity are not affected at all - she'll just have short arms and legs. It's hard work being positive about it though, especially when I'm tired.

angry at your il's choc - don't take any notice.

AnyasMum07 · 17/12/2007 16:28

meant not angry!

Hi all,

Just got back from London and we had a fab time!
Got there yesterday around 3 and had afternoon tea at the hotel -afternoon tea, get me then went to Oxford street/regent street to look at the lights. Hamley's was still open so we mooched around in there and got Ollie some cars from the film 'cars' to help his collection. It was busy but not as busy as I thought it would be. They shut 20 mins after we arrived so we didn't have time for Ollie to get stupidly excited
Went back to the hotel and had dinner in the room as I couldn't face the restaurant with Ollie and Henry. We all watched Shrek and Ollie was then stupidly excited that he couldn't get to sleep. We ALL had to go to sleep at 10 as both boys were in the same room as us and Ollie was getting his 3rd/4th wind...

Father Christmas in Harrods was fab and we got the photos, then more mooching round the toy dept. Ollie was soooo excited after seeing FC that he was bouncing off the ceiling by this point. Then went to daddy's work and met his work mates (Ollie was very confused as the dealing floor where dh works DID NOT look like the 'bank' he had obviously formed in his head!! Not really impressed at all) Then onto a ride on tube -Underground Ernie - then back to the hotel in a taxi to pick up the car.

Knackered, knackered, knackered but really pleased we did it. Henry decided to do his 1st night of nearly sleeping through -10 till 5.20am - I did not sleep as my boobs were fit to burst and when he woke I nearly lept on him as I was starting to ache!

Back at home and having a lazy evening as we're all really tied. Ollie in bed and dh sorting Henry out for me.

We used the Hugabub all round London -dh yesterday and me today- didn't even take the pram. It was great as we could go on the underground, taxi's, escalators without worrying about folding buggies and finding the lifts. Would definately recommend one. I have a snug cardi from Isabella Oliver that I still use and wear over the sling so Henry is warm but not overheating. Even got talking to a pregnant women in Harrods about the slings as she wanted one and was asking if they are any good!

Anyasmum - Are definately up to meet up this thurs I'll reply to your email.

Les - Nice pics!

Catch up later
x

TheLadyEvenstar · 17/12/2007 20:17

it even hurting to smoke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MrsFish · 17/12/2007 20:24

Ooo dear I would take the pain from you but I have been in discomfort with my back and neck, don't want toothache too I went to see my chiropractor today, last time I went was Feb 06 don't know where the time has gone. He cracked my neck back into place... twice! even though I know its going to happen its still a shock when he does it, I think its the noise more than anything then he did my lower back, said it definitely needed doing, my neck feels so much looser now. It will take a few days to get the real benefit, but at least t feels better. I think I need to start having regular back massages, especially now I'm getting older

Muppet - sounds like a fab time was had by all

alicet · 17/12/2007 21:34

Muppet I have a fab cardi from Isabella Oliver too that I wear over my hugabub! Is it the wrap one that has 2 long ends? Its great... Glad you had such a great time - sounds fab.

LES sorry to hear about your tooth and MrsFish sorry about your back...

Well we had a lovely morning at the toddler group Christmas party today - Sam met Santa for the first time and he was totally non-plussed - he was much more excited by the bag of chocolate buttons he got in pass the parcel! Then this afternoon we went to one of his friends houses - they had a lovely time most of the time but did a lot of the wanting to play with the same toy at the same time toddler thing so didn't get as much of a catch up with her mum as I would have liked!! Never mind, Sam and her dd are supercute together - Alice just chases Sam to give him kisses and cuddles all the time!

Anyway, watching dragon's den at the mo - I love it! Especially when they try to put forward really crap ideas!

strawberrylace · 17/12/2007 21:48

evening everyone!

Well, we have had a busy two days. Yesterday had lunch with a couple we met in hospital - both our boy and theirs slept through and we got to have a good catch up. Today I took Olly to the baby clinic, and he now weighs 11lb 14oz - which means he's put on a pound in the last fortnight. Glad to know that my milk is getting used!

Then we visited his nana on the way to help my grandma celebrate her 93rd birthday. All the old ladies in her old people's home cooed over him - he is such a flirt. My mum is now staying with us for a couple of days, so he is having a real nanny day!

strawberrylace · 17/12/2007 21:50

MrsFish - def think i would try to settle him if he wakes during the night rather than going straight to feeding. Olly goes down about 12.30am, then wakes about 5am, and just wants his dummy found for him, or to come in our bed, and then he'll sleep till 7am - bliss

Choc - in-laws can be a nightmare can't they?! I am lucky with mine, apart from my step gran-in-law (yes, it's complicated) who says things like 'he's crying, are you sure you're producing enough milk to feed him properly' when all the health visitors are v happy with his weight gain, he is a happy chappy and is actually just tired...

Anyasmum - hope things are getting better for you - i agree that feeding them before they realise they want feeding is the way forward - it's how i've managed to get Olly to feed easily - esp at night

inzi - 9 for xmas dinner? you are a marvel, i am going to rellies cos i am a lazy person and am happy to let others cook for me

Muppetgirl & alicet- glad you had fun with santa...

LadyEvenstar - ouch ouch ouch poor you

alicet · 17/12/2007 21:57

strawberrylace great to hear you sounding so upbeat! Irritating when other people think they know better than you about your lo though isn't it? Always feel like slapping the blue rinse brigade who always suck their cheeks in and nod knowingly at each other saying 'ooohh is he hungry?'. Umm - no he's shattered actually and you by just clucking at him and tickling under his chin are just stopping him from sleeping!!!

Shouldn't get so irritated really as they mean well but it is irritating!

muppetgirl · 17/12/2007 22:00

Hi Alice -yep the one with the really long ends -that get longer!! I also still use the turtlenecks in black and burgandy that I live in!

alicet · 17/12/2007 22:03

I sold most of my IO clothes for about £250 on ebay! Had tonnes - thought I'm not doing this again so may as well look glam!!! Still have a couple of wrap dresses though that I'll keep until I lose my jelly belly

muppetgirl · 17/12/2007 22:08

I've decided to find a womens refuge (there must be one locally) and give my maternity things and anything else they could find a use for.

MrsFish · 17/12/2007 22:18

I'm still wearing most of my maternity tops, this weight is NOT shifting at all really must start getting on the cross trainer, and another thing I am getting heartburn again

nellieloula · 17/12/2007 22:22

hi everyone - hope you're all ok. things here are ok - DH has been at home which has made things considerably easier esp as DS and DD have been full of cold. I remembered the saline drops tip from a weeks ago (alice and floria I think?) so thanks for that! I'm very at all these sleeping babies - Madeleine is still day/night confused so is still awake and content now but will sleep all day tmrw! I know that I need to wake her up in daylight and put a atop to the marathon naps but to be honest it is so much easier getting shopping and everything done with her happily napping in the sling. Also, she's still so little (8 weeks and just 9lbs) we'll re=look at it all in the new year I think! anyway, just wanted to say hi and hope you all get good nights.

strawberrylace · 17/12/2007 22:23

alicet - know exactly what you mean re people meaning well, but not helping. i have to keep biting my lip and smiling nicely. I'm just too stubborn sometimes (most of the time) and like to do things my way, so am happy climbing the learning curve without their input from 30-odd years ago. esp when the 30+ son of the interfering person concerned spent all of the xmas get together hungover and either ignoring hsi kids or shouting at them....

muppetgirl · 17/12/2007 22:30

Advice time!

Have b/f Henry every 3 hrs today and he has had both breasts each time. I'm knackered so we f/f him at 7pm (instead of breast) and he took 6 1/2 ozs adn I've just dream fed him at 10pm and he's take 4 1/2 ozs. so 11ozs in 3 hrs -do we think this is a lot or am I just worrying to much?
