Hello all ! Been very ill for the last week or so - hence radio silence... Joe has managed a couple of long stints without food overnight - from 23h to 05h the other night and then 20h to 04h last night. I can't believe it! I really thought he'd be like ds1 and feed 3 or 4 times a night until I pushed him to go through. Mind you, I did leave him to cry himself to sleep a couple of times when I was feeling really cr*p and couldn't deal with his crying so I think that being able to settle himself in his cot by himself has probably helped a lot...

Dh away in USA for a few days so will be going quietly mad without adult conversation. We're having our antenatal class over on Thursday evening so will be shopping and cooking tomorrow. Can't believe it's almost Christmas!

Hope you are all okay and no-one else is suffering from this horrid cold which seems to be doing the rounds.

PolarMummy · 18/12/2007 21:05

Missbumpy - I leave Zoe in her cot in the morning while I have a shower, I try to shower while she is asleep but don't always manage it, but luckily she will lay in her cot awake and allow me to have a quick shower (ejt I think I could challenge you on the quickest shower, apart from at the weekend when DH is here and then I can't have a quick shower at all ) We also have a mobile on her cot and she loves it and we have a mobile bit to our baby listener so I take that into the bathroom with me. As for a routine or getting things done during the day Zoe is 11 weeks and we have no routine and I just get done round the house what I can (very little tbh) but we are generally both happy and healthy which is the most important thing to me

alicet hope getting the mirena fitted goes ok, will be thinking about you

ejt hope that mairwen still sleeps well for you tonight even though she went down early.

Well we have had a bit of a mixed bag today, Zoe slept really well last night 12 - 6.30 and then fed and went back down until 10.30 and was in great form but that didn't last I am not sure whether her tummy is bothering her or if she was just tired but she wasn't in good form during the day, mind you she is in great form now sitting in her seat chatting and laughing away its class I really want to buy her a swing but am trying to resist as she already has a play mat and a bouncy seat! But I have seen some on ebay and I really want to get her one

ChocolateHobnob · 18/12/2007 21:07

hello all! short message just to say hello really... been out all day, got my hair cut (hurrah!), been to see friends, been to my parents for dinner... Rebecca is now in meltdown mode - overtired and needs calming - and I'm tired too! DH is calming her though...

Oh and I second, third, whatever the Hugabub. I confess I've been known to email, read, and even watch television while DD is in it, having decided that chores might wake DD up. But I am lazy mummy!

Oh and showering - the swing works for me, she loves it. I am a 100% swing recommender!

OK too tired to read/type more. Take care all and more tomorrow!

Katsh · 18/12/2007 21:14

Hi, just thought I'd wish all a Happy Christmas - can't see me making it on here again for a while. We've had a fairly exhausting past week. All the family unwell with viruses ( self included) and then bub got bronchiolitis and we were in hospital. He's recovering well now, but 2 1/2 days of him needing to feed every 45mins to an hour has well and truly exhausted me. He was struggling to breathe and therefore feeding tired him, so he'd only manage a little before falling asleep, but would still be hungry.
He is now going 2 - 2 1/2 hours between feeds so it's getting better. Missbumpy don't worry about the 3 hourly feeding. That's what Rory was like too, and now we've gone backwards !!! Last night he was awake 4 times - and yet 4 weeks ago he was only up once in the night. All babies are different and you just have to go with it for the first few months. I'm sure you are doing a great job and giving him all that he needs. His being ill has certainly made me much less bothered about pushing length between feeds or night sleeps as I've realised that he will feed when he needs to and sleep when he needs to and so long as I am not too tired/ hungry / thirsty we'll get by. I am having to downsize my Christmas aspirations, but I think everyone will cope with that for one year.
Anyway good wishes to all and enjoy Christmas with your beautiful babies

strawberrylace · 18/12/2007 23:09

Dalrymps and alicet ? thanks for the advice about the hugabub. I do actually have a sling, and I just forget to use it, so I am dusting it off and going to give it a try?

Unicorn ? just saw your post about getting settled in a cot. Ds has been in his since week 3, with the help of a Blossom Farm rabbit from ELC ? has lights in its belly and projecting from its head onto the ceiling, plus 6 tunes ? all controlled with a remote control from the comfort of your bed! I think it helps him to settle, or it may just be helping me go to sleep so I don?t notice him awake?.

strawberrylace · 18/12/2007 23:12

Missbumpy ? I haven?t been brave enough to bf in public either yet! So I time any trips out shopping etc with military precision to go straight after a feed. This gives me a good few hours round the town, esp as Olly will sleep for ages in his pushchair. I have found I have to put him in his recliner chair and take him into the bathroom with me if I want to have a shower without hearing him scream from the bedroom. If I get him dressed immediately after his morning feed I can usually get washed, dressed, hair and make-up done while he?s happy in his chair for half an hour.

PolarMummy ? I second Choc?s swing recommendation. We were given one and I wouldn?t be without it (even if he doesn?t like it some days) Kept him happy at a recent family xmas do (and out of the reach of interfering in-laws), and he swung in the kitchen while I cooked this afternoon

Katsh - sounds like you've had a nightmare time - here's hoping your Christmas is better

Well, should go and get ready for bed now, before ds wakes for food. see you all tomorrow!

muppetgirl · 19/12/2007 09:08

HI all

Thanks for the advice re the sticky eyes Alice. It's made my mind up that it isn;t conjuctivitis. None of us have and bear in mind Henry has had it for 5 weeks now and it's got neither worse or better so if it were an infection I am assuming it would have got worse? We have decided to go with the bathing of his eye -we've been doing that anyway but the hv says it has to be done 10-12 times a day. We still have the eye drops so if it doesn't improve we'll try those and then go down the swab route.

Good luck with the coil fitting though, thinking of you

Miss Bumpy - re the b/f in public I did asap as I knew I would build it up in my head and not do it at all -as what happened with ds1. If you want a bit more freedom and want to be able to feed in public have a go at home with the clothes you would be wearing, practise in front of a mirror as this will show you what others actually see and gives you more confidence becasue they can't actaully see what you think they can iyswim!
B/f tops are great, I use the vest ones from Mothercare. I can then put a jumper on top and this keeps me warm. V-neck jumpers are great as you can rumage around in them and sort yourself out before getting lo ready.
There was me even b/f in Harrods!! (Okay it was in the children's cafe )

Well, an unsettled night for us. Ollie isn;t well and we found him crying in the bathroom a little confused as to what he was doing there -water/wee? we never did find out. Henry slept from 8pm-2.30am-6am so not bad.
We are aiming our way up North this morning and I think when we arrive I will just sleep, sleep, sleep!

Have a good day all
x

missbumpy · 19/12/2007 13:26

Hi everyone

ejt - I'm so impressed by your routine! I don't have anything that could even loosely be called a routine yet!

katsh - sorry to hear about you and LO being ill. My DD had a nasty chest infection a few weeks ago and had to stay in hospital and I've had a cold and mastitis so I know how you feel. I felt that the feeding went backwards too. I think DD's just trying to build herself up after being ill....all well and good but my poor nips are suffering!

strawberry - I time trips out with military precision too! I can't imagine just going out without knowing where I'll be when DD next needs a feed.

So, those of you whose LO's are sleeping through most of the night, how did you do it? Is it a formula thing? Did you actively encourage them into a routine or did it just happen?

I'm so !

Strawberry - had exactly the same problem with Anya - she would sleep wonderfully at night but was rubbish during the day. We've solved it by watching for her getting tired (first sign with her is rubbing her eyes) then taking her to the bedroom, shutting the curtains so that it's dark-ish, putting on the rainfall sound thing that we've got which is very soothing, and putting her to sleep with her dummy in her moses basket. At first she took a bit of persuasion to actually fall asleep - often needed cuddling to sleep and then laying down (then picking up/cuddling/laying down repeatedly) and she kept waking up too soon but we were really persistant and did it every time she got tired. It only took a couple of days though and she now goes to sleep really quickly for a nap and stays asleep for an hour or two at a time. Evenings are much better now as she's not overtired.

inzi - I've asked hv & doctor about the straining to poo thing - Anya does it too and usually to little effect. Am told it's fairly normal, they're just learning about the sensations that their new stomachs are making, and there's no worry unless they go for 4 days or more without pooing.

Had a frustrating day yesterday - Anya was refusing to feed again - she was crying when we tried and could only be persuaded to take the odd ounce. Went to the GP in the afternoon who said she was clearly distressed about something but couldn't find anything wrong so referred us to the hospital to get a urine sample and test for infection. We tried feeding her again at the hospital and the little minx took about 6oz without a murmer! Then she went to sleep for half an hour and woke in a very good mood. Did urine test anyway, was negative, so no idea what was wrong. They sent us home but have given us open access until tomorrow morning so we can go straight back if she goes off her food again. Have had a really good night/morning though - feeding normally, sleeping a lot (having worn herself out from crying yesterday no doubt), and been to playgroup this morning. Fingers crossed it stays like this!

strawberrylace · 19/12/2007 14:37

my question of the day - have you ever wondered how babies manage to do vertical poos all up their backs? With such force that it goes through two layers of clothes and nearly through the baby sleeping bag... Not a nice way for mummy to be woken up today Olly!

Once all that was cleared up we managed to get to Tesco for the xmas food shop. Not that I'm cooking (too lazy) but like to use the festive season to eat little party food things. Wasn't too bad as thankfully there was a parent & child space plus the right kind of trolley to put his car seat on. I'm sure I've forgotten something but i don't fancy braving the shop again!

My mum is babysitting tonight, so we are planning a night out to the cinema - haven't been for ages cos couldn't bear the uncomfy seats when pregnant - so really looking forward to it

Hope you are all having a good day

alicet · 19/12/2007 14:55

Ladies sorry to hear so many of you and your los have been under the weather. Thinking of you all... Katsch we were in hospital with Sam when he was 10 months with bronchiolitis - it's really distressing watching them struggle to brethe isn't it? Glad to hear he's on the mend...

Someone asked about supermarket shopping - inzi? Our Asda have trolleys that you can attach the car seat to so its actually really easy. I bit tricky to lift the seat up but once there it's not a problem. Or there are ones kind of car seat shaped for little babies. Might try and go Friday lunchtime to get most of the christmas stuff rather than face the hordes at the weekend!!!

Muppet good luck with the journey north!

Well the mirena is in and it wasn't half as bad as I expected! Not an entirely pleasant experience but could have been a lot worse. Thanks for the tip on painkillers ejt. A little uncomfortable now but nothing I can't cope with. And as its more effective than a vasectomy here's hoping there won't be any accidents!!!

Anyway off to feed Adam - Sam has had a mammoth sleep so I have got loads of bits and pieces done. He will prob wake soon though so want really to feed Adam before then... We have a friend coming over for dinner so prob won't see you till tomorrow but thinking of you all...

greedygreedyguzzler · 19/12/2007 17:20

havent been on for ages, sorry. too much going on like everyone else i guess! nativities, xmas parties, xmas fayres etc all multiplied by 2!!!

havent got time to catch up now either which i know is really selfish, sorry! hope everyone is doing well and getting excited about xmas.

just wanted to pick your brains ladies!!!.......................quick question..............anybody elses babies have lots of blood in their snot? nice i know!!! marcy has a cold and i have noticed all her bogies are mainly blood and when she sneezes its snot streaked with blood and there is always blood on the tissue when i wipe her nose. i know she prob just has blood vessels very close to the surface but just wondered if anyone else has experienced it?

MulledwineandJ2O · 19/12/2007 17:29

hi all

greedy - only read your post so far, and i was going to ask the same question! Shannon has had a bad cold for over a week and she has had bloody snot too, so i guess it isn't unusual.

right off to read the rest of the posts

MulledwineandJ2O · 19/12/2007 17:58

ok i've skimmed but if i read everything i wont get chance to write anything, trying to eat my tea, bounce lo in chair and type at same time!

life is so hectic atm, i have to plan toilet trips round lo! she's a good baby but can get very demanding when she knows i'm trying to do something and her nose has been blocked for over a week so feeds are taking over an hour sometimes.

inzi-Jane is absolutely gorgous and such a chunky bum in the pics Shannons got massive thighs the nurse at her injections thought she was there for her 12 week jabs they're that big, and she's well over 12 lb now, lo was only about 10 lb at her age.

alice-that pic of Adam being born is lovely not had chance to look at other pics yet sorry.

i had terrible toothache for nearly 2 weeks which finally went away last week, so thats another one of my excuses for not being around, i wasn't sleeping and couldn't concentrate properly to write i was in that much pain, i've got to go for root canal work in Jan[sob]

right gotta go, mucky nappy calling, will try and be back later!!!

Hi everyone - alice, glad the fitting went ok. I think I'll get one at the 3 month mark (they won't fit them here before that) cause so many people think they're great. Also, what kind of cot mobile do you have? our's only lasts for 3 or 4 mins so is pretty useless.

missbumpy, please don't feel inadequate. I'm on DC no 2 and it is a lot more disorganised - I too feel rubbish when everyone else seems to have LO@s sleeping big stints at night; we currently get 3 hrs if we're lucky and Madeleine has taken to feeding constantly from 3-6am every day. She's in bed with us so that is one ok thing and it's only because she has a cold but it is shattering. All babies are different and they just need to find their pace and routine. It will happen for us too!! Please keep positive and remember you're doing a great job - aren't we all!

big hello to everyone else - sorry baby brain has the better of me!

DS is also poorly (he's had a virus and really nasty conjunctivitus and impetigo as a result) and whilst I feel so sorry for him, he is also playing up like a demon and driving me up the wall! Here's hoping tomorrow is easier!

right - better get on. take care everyone and have good nights.

TheLadyEvenstar · 19/12/2007 20:43

Hiya,

Dal have sorted all the outgrown clothes out and hell there is a lot lol 1 black bag full and a box as well. I have got to get a huge box to post them all lol. Can you wait another week????

ChocolateHobnob · 19/12/2007 21:19

Hi all

J20, good to hear from you!Glad you're okay.

Alicet, glad the Mirena wasn't too painful. I am very squeamish about that sort of thing!

Greedy, Nellie, hi! Miss Bumpy, I havent bf in public places as such, just other people's houses. I will but havent got round to it yet. I recommend feeding tops from Jojomamanbebe if you're nervy about it like me - they hide more than the H and M ones. And they dont look too much like feeding tops!

Inzi, all the big supermarkets have special trolleys for carseats and even idiots like me can attach them v easily... oh and well done on the fantastic Hugabub!

Rebecca had a complete disaster last night - screamed and screamed with wind. I am blaming a friend's fruitcake. She was clearly in pain all night! so we got no sleep and I am the walking zombie today. Went out for a long lunch with 2 colleagues and she slept through it all so has recovered from her night but I havent.. Back on the Infacol now (her not me) - I had used it a few times and stopped when wind didnt seem to be a problem (famous last words). Fingers crossed she's better tonight!!!

Hope you're all okay, hello all!

TheLadyEvenstar · 19/12/2007 22:04

Am sitting here looking at Zach who has discovered he can pull his blanket over his face, pull his dummy out n cry n mummy will go running SOD!!!!!!!!!!!

TheLadyEvenstar · 19/12/2007 22:06

Polar, One suggestion JOIN FREECYCLE!!!!!!! I picked up a Graco 3 speed swing for Zachary and he LOVES it. although the noise of the motor can be annoying when u are trying to watch tv.

Dalrymps · 19/12/2007 22:07

Hey everyone,
just eating my tea - at 10pm ... anyway just a quick note to say to LES - of course i can wait a week, just whenever is best for you, if you really have loads of clothes maybe someone else on here might want to share them too? just checking cause don't want to be greedy but if no one else wants any then i'll be glad to take em off your hands

OP posts:
Dalrymps · 19/12/2007 22:18

oh and by the way INZI - you won't regret the hugabub, sooo comfortable it feels like you're hardly wearing it!

OP posts:
MulledwineandJ2O · 19/12/2007 22:24

i'm back for a min, have put some pics on my profile, i think i'm coming down with cold now grrrr so i'll be going to bed soon.

any advice on getting lo's to sleep through the night without a bottle? if i feed her at 8.30pm she'll go till about 3am which isn't bad, but even if i feed her at 11.30 she wakes up at 3am then again at 5am.

right i'm off to bed, will hopefully be back soon, don't know how you all find the time to chat, none of you must sleep!

xx

PolarMummy · 20/12/2007 00:14

Hi everyone

J20 - I find the same type of thing regarding sleep, Zoe will have a big sleep at some point in the evening, sometimes it is after a 7pm feed and she will go to 2 or 3am, so she misses her 11pm feed but if I feed her at 11pm she will still want fed at 3am! Strange creatures babies

Dal I was eating my tea at about the same time tonight, DH was away and his plane was delayed and I had waited for him for tea.

LES thanks for the reminder about freecycle, I joined it awhile ago and have just posted asking if anyone is looking to get rid of a baby swing so fingers crossed, I missed out on one on ebay by £1 I think Zoe has also learned that if she shouts mummy will come as sometimes she sounds really unhappy in her pram, I go over to her and she smiles up at me and looks all coy! I have to say when she does this I don't lift her I just talk to her and or give her her dummy back!

Choc big hugs, I hope you have a better night tonight, its awful when they scream and you can't seem to do anything to help them. I read recently that to help ease wind you can lie them on their and move their legs in a bicycling motion, Zoe loves it, I don't know if it just distracts her or helps move the wind!

nellie this is the mobile I have here and Zoe loves it, esp the jungle sounds, it plays for about 18mins and then there is a remote which you can switch it back on with, not sure how far away it works I have only used it in the same room

Hey greedy good to hear from you, sorry no experience of the blood in snot from the LO's hope it clears up soon

Wow a trip to the cinema strawberry, what did you go to see, I dream of such civilised things but am too tired at the moment and think I would just sleep!

Hello everyone else, my breast pump has just finished sterilising so I had better go and express and get myself off to bed as I am falling asleep while typing. Wishing you all a good nights sleep
