Welcome Meep. Hope you had a good Christmas.

Well I am all geared up to start dd on solids at the weekend. Guess I ought to get on with it although she is back to sleeping through the night again! Just got to get me back to sleeping through the night again

Hope everyone has a good New Years Eve whatever you're doing. I think this is the first year we have had no invites to do anything. Guess we have become sad and lonely since becoming parents - either that or people have assumed we won't want to do anything (which I don't really - I'm shattered)

thepreciousbabycheeses · 31/12/2007 20:15

hello Meep!

MelissaM I do not want to hear about your baby sleeping through! Ds was great over Christmas, first my parents then the in-laws, however it right royally buggered up his lovely new nap and self settling scheme.

Back to the beginning, he was up at 2am and 5am last night.

I will be sleeping through 12am. 2007 has been great tho.

Happy New Year everyone!

MelissaM · 01/01/2008 15:23

Hi Theprecious

If it makes you feel any better dd woke at 10 - just as I was finishing expressing - but she did take the bottle I gave her thankfully

Christmas does seem to have messed up dd's routine too. Back to it tomorrow.

Happy New Year everyone

pulapula · 01/01/2008 18:53

Happy new year everyone,

I've just had a little cry whilst putting DS to bed tonight, as tomorrow is his first day in nursery. My little boy is growing up fast. I'm not going back to work til March, but he's doing a day a week until then, to get settled in (before the separation anxiety stage kicks in) and to give me chance to prepare for going back to work. Last time it was really hard doing both at the same time.

catstar · 01/01/2008 19:53

Happy New Year everyone!

Just catching up on everything, but notice PulaPula that you refer to a separation anxiety stage - when does this kick in? DD will be going to nursery at 7/8 months (March) - would I also be wise to start the settling in days in January?

Sorry gotta get going so catch up soon .

pulapula · 01/01/2008 22:31

Catstar,

I think separation anxiety can start anytime between 6 and 12 months, but probably nearer to 12 (or peaks around then). I am just trying to convince myself it makes sense to start him now rather than March, so starting him when he's not aware of whether I'm in the room or not seems as good a time as any. Sometimes I feel selfish to start him now so I can have some time to myself too, but I guess I have spent 6 months with him 24/7, so a bit of free time to get my haircut etc before returning to work is not unreasonable (?), although I guess I could have left it another month. Friends whose babies started nursery at 6mo settled easier than those at 12mo but I don't know of any babies who started between 6 and 12mo.

Myfairone · 02/01/2008 12:26

Hi all,
I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year.
I am pleased to report that LO is now sleeping through the night again after our trip to the USA....I never thought it would take me a month to settle him back to his old routine!!!!

I have decided to take 3 more months off from work...cant afford it (so feel terribly guilty) but just cannot get my head around the fact that I have to leave him....does anyone have any tips of how to get through it....I can just cry at the thought of it!

Pulapula, makes perfect sense to book LO to the nursery now to get him used to it.

meep · 02/01/2008 15:51

Happy New year to all the July babies and their mums!
2008 hearlds weaning for us - baby rice starts on Friday! dd has been woken for a 10.30pm feed since she was about 5 months old - am desparate to stop it but too scared to in case it starts the night feeds again!
We were away for New Year with friends who had babies around 1 year old - supposedly the separation anxiety gets really bad when they start walking - until they walk they don't know the diffeerence between themselves and mummy - but when they walk their independence hits them and they get clingy! Well this is what I was told - so we will see what happens!
Pulapula - my dd starts nursery in a week and I cry all the time about it - so it's niceto hear that they settle better at 6 months - I will keep telling myself that!

pulapula · 02/01/2008 18:59

Well DS was a star at nursery- no trouble at all and so good the staff want to take him home with them. His 2x2 hour naps (not surprisingly) were replaced with 40mins and 25mins, but I managed to get him down for another 40mins when we got home as he was so tired he would cry if he wasn't being held. He ate and drank very well too, polishing off two 8oz bottles and 3 solid meals. I had taken my own purees, but they also gave him theirs which included pasta and veg (pureed I hope!)- so much for introducing new foods slowly (he's only had pear apple and carrot at home). Oh well. Doesn't seem to have had any adverse effects.

I spent a day with my DH- a bit of shopping in the morning and household chores in the afternoon, including making some more purees. Felt very strange not to have DD and DS in tow.

dorisofdevon · 02/01/2008 23:01

Hi to you all, Hope you all had very merry christmas's and Happy New Year's. Sorry it's been so long had an unexpected hospital stay for the two weeks before christmas with dd2 but managed to escape on Christmas eve (by which time we had sent dd1 to scotland on holiday!) However had a great belated christmas and am feeling positive about the year

It's an improvement on last year which i spent in hospital with morning sickness i've decided that as we have fully utilised all the tax we pay into the national health service last year this year we will not need to stay in hospital AT ALL, well I'm ever hopeful

Anyway LO is now weaning but still waking in the night however she needs all the calories she can get as she had nearly two weeks without eating and lost weight. Still we have the review tomorrow so fingers crossed

Happy New Year to you all

bilblio · 03/01/2008 00:46

Hi all, a belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Glad to hear that on the whole we all had good ones.

We were at my parents Christmas Day, Dad has been making a remarkable recovery, so good that he was out of hospital over a week before Christmas! It's the first Christmas I've spent there for years as I've usually offered to work Christmas Day... (saving up the Brownie points so that when I had kids I wouldn't have to work it.)
We only got B a couple of presents. A tickle-me-elmo, which she wasn't bothered about, it only got turned on once as my niece who is 18mo was Terrified of it . I like it though. At least the rainstick went down well. It was voted best Christmas present by everyone, and has already been successful in keeping B distracted from her evening whinge for 45 minutes.

New Year was a quiet one. We were supposed to be going to a party at a friends, but their 11 week old had spent the night before in hospital after being dropped on his head by his Uncle! Thankfully he's okay.

We'll be joining the weaning gang in a couple of weeks time. I'm leaving it as long as possible. We did try a bit of carrot and broccoli on Christmas Day, it resulted in some fantastic faces and a messy carpet.

On the Sunday before Christmas B finally sussed rolling over, after threatening to do it for about 2 months. It's now her favourite trick and she does it as soon as we put her on the floor. Nappy changes are infinitely more interesting. Unfortunatly she can only roll from her back to her front, not from her front to her back (which is supposed to be much easier.)
I had to get out of the shower 3 times the other morning to flip her back over. If she doesn't learn to right herself soon I'll be sitting her in the bumbo when I have my showers.

meep · 03/01/2008 09:13

dod - sorry to hear about your LO - I'm new on here so don't know her story - but glad that she is ok now!
Pulapula - that is what worries me about nursery - the lack of decent nap times! I won't be able to collect dd until about 6pm - I take it they will feed her before I get there so that I don't have to try to do that with a grumpy baby?!
No rolling for us - just some interesting hip thrusting while dd is on the floor! But she has managed to sit on her own especially if she has an interesting toy to focus on! Biblio - the bumbo is definitely the way forward for taking showers!
Well we're off to Ikea today to buy a high chair - was debating whether to get that or a Tripp Trapp - and tried a friends Ikea one at Hogmanay and it was fab - £13.99 - you can't go wrong!!!

PinkPussyCat · 03/01/2008 12:36

Hello there!
Just want to introduce myself, I had my first baby in July 07. I have been using mn for a wee while, but didn't realise about the post-natal clubs until now!
I know you must all know each other really well by now but do you have some room for a latecomer?
Happy New Year btw

meep · 03/01/2008 13:02

Hi PPC! Has your hair stopped falling out yet?
I'm new too - I even searched for the July 07 post-natal club and couldn't find it!
Dd just had her first taste of baby rice - she would only take some if I held her as if she was going to get milk! I'm not sure she is convinced about this whole weaning process!

PinkPussyCat · 03/01/2008 13:09

Hi meep!! Good to hear from you, the hair seems to be very much back to normal, thanks for asking! But only just - i hadn't realised it would take nearly 6 months to settle down. Only takes me 5 mins in the shower now, no hairballs to clear up anymore lol!
Not started ds on any food yet, and he doesn't seem that interested anyway tbh. He is officially 6 months old on 18th, and dh has got it into his head we will all be sitting down for tea together on that evening. Boy is he in for a disappointment

PinkPussyCat · 03/01/2008 13:12
meep · 03/01/2008 13:19

I now have the fuzzy new hair growth thing going on - very bizarre! I am going to look so stylish when I go back to work - fuzzy hair - rather inflated tummy and bum - sick stains everywhere

PinkPussyCat · 03/01/2008 13:32

Mmmm...gorgeous eh?
Yes I too am suffering from double-fringe! Would love to just shave it all + start again but wouldn't want to scare anyone!

MelissaM · 03/01/2008 13:44

Hi pinkpussycat and welcome.

I'm still losing my hair but am sure it will settle down soon. I was shocked by how much at first too - seemed like I was losing handfuls every time I washed it.
We're planning on starting to wean dd on Saturday. DH wants to be around when she has her first taste of food so I thought the weekend would be best. She's 26 wks on Sun & 6 mths on Tues so I guess it is probably about the right time.

meep · 03/01/2008 13:50

I gave dd her first food - took a photo and sent it to DH at work. he was really upset - I hadn't thought that he would have liked to have been there - I feel really awful now as I can't take it back

PinkPussyCat · 03/01/2008 14:09

Hi Melissa! Good to be here
Why does no-one tell you about that hair thing? I used to get in a right old panic over it.
Looking forward to hearing everyone's weaning stories!

Jennster · 03/01/2008 14:31

Hello Meep and Pinkpussycat. It's pretty quiet on here now to be honest but welcome.

Weaning wise we are 23 weeks and so not bothered yet. Gave DS a parsnip to suck on at Christmas and a doughball at Pizza Express on Tuesday, but other than that going to leave it a few weeks. He still has the tongue thrust reflex and has been waking in the night for extra feeds for a month or so now anyway, so getting enough milk from me.

Little sis has discussed going to New York for a week in September and DH is encouraging me to go! We've been together a couple of times, but this would be completely different. Our parents and his sister would love to help him out with dd and ds. He's thinking of taking the time off himself.

catstar · 03/01/2008 15:24

Welcome Meep and PinkPussyCat!!

Pulapula - thanks for info on settling in etc. We will be starting this at the nursery in a few weeks - I am encouraged by your experience! However, I think the separation anxiety is more likely to be suffered by me as I can't bear the thought of Little O sniling for anyone else!!!

Poor little mite - we were back at the doctors this morning as her eczema has flared up again. I saw a different doctor who seemed quite shocked at how bad it is on a 5 month baby. We should be referred to a dermatologist nest week. He started talking about bandaging her at night because she wakes frequently and is writhing around, even in her sleep. We have socks on her hands now as she worked out how to get the scratch mitts off! I really hope we can get it under control with this latest batch of lotions and potions.

Doris - this is nothing compared with what your LO is going through and I hope the hospital stay wasn't too traumatic for you all.

Bilblio - great news about your Dad - what an extra special Christmas.

We are now on our second week of weaning and have so far tried apple, pear, cauliflower, parsnip, carrot and sweet potato with no refusals! LO certainly has a better diet than me - I seem to have lost some weight but all the wrong things are going into my body and I must try to kick the glass of wine I have every night. It's become a bit of a habit.

Anyway, Happy New Year to you all. Our new highchair has just been delivered so I'm going to have a play with that now!

PinkPussyCat · 03/01/2008 16:03

Hi Jennster + catstar! Nice to 'meet' you!

Jennster - am very of you getting to go to New York in Sept, it is my favourite place in the world. Lots of lovely memories of getting engaged there etc

catstar - ds also has eczema, which started off as two patches of dry skin on his legs. We were very quick off the mark to get it well moisturised with Epaderm, but it just seems to be getting worse and has spread to the rest of his body. It's now appearing as red patches rather than dryness. for the last 3 days we have been moisturising 4 or 5 times a day, and I am going to try + see the gp on mon. How did you find your gp when you first went? Did they prescribe hydrocortisone/steroid cream straight away? I think he is going to need it.
Apologies for all the questions!

meep · 03/01/2008 16:09

hello hello to all!!
dd also has excema (as do I) - Epaderm works to a certain extent but we resorted to steroids because the back of her knees were bleeding - worked instantly - just have to be very frugal with it.
She has also been scratching the side of her head - at first I thought she had marks from headbutting my specs but it has gone further than that and is bleeding - poor wee thing
I just hope that she'll grow out of it.
Can I come to New York too??!
