5 month on Ready Brek

Hey everyone,

I just wanted some advice about my little girl. She’s 5 months old and on Ready Brek as well as her normal milk for her reflux. I originally had her on baby Cow & Gate porridge but my hv said to give her ready brek as it’s better for her.

A month in and she has a raging rash all over her body - she’s on creams and antibiotics but it’s doing nothing. Could there be an allergy to something in the ready brek?

Please help!

Ready brek is oats and vitamins so unless she can't tolerate oats there's not much more in them. What milk is she on?

madeamist · 22/11/2020 16:01

I’d say stop the porridge for reflux and ask your hv for some age appropriate advice
Babies shouldn’t be having solids before 6 m and it coukd be aggravating the reflux there are medications available which would be better and the hv should know this

madeamist · 22/11/2020 16:02

Has cmpa been investigated as a reflux cause as well ?

foxyroxyyy · 22/11/2020 16:04

Stop giving the baby ready brek!!!!

snowone · 22/11/2020 16:08

I was told by my HV that if I wanted to wean before 6 months that I should give nothing other than fruit or veg as a babies digestive system isn't developed enough for anything else.

theantsgomarchin · 22/11/2020 16:25

Your baby is 5 months old and you've been feeding her ready brek for a month already? Wtf

madeamist · 22/11/2020 18:38

I think OP has been given bad advice from the hv tbh by the sounds of it which is wrong but hopefully no damage has been done and OP can now get some up to date advice
@Blondeyoghurt can you get a gp appt to discuss the reflux ?

ShirleyPhallus · 22/11/2020 18:39

What did your doctor tell you it was when they gave you antibiotics?

Blondeyoghurt · 22/11/2020 21:10

My doctor told me it was infected eczema because the rash is so bad atm.

Can I just let all the snidey posters know that I’m going off purely the hvs advice. @theantsgomarchin she’s had baby porridge for 2 weeks & ready brek for 2 weeks due to her reflux.

Honestly guys I’m just looking for advice about her awful rash so I’ll just delete the post if I’m just going to be criticised about giving her baby foods.

Thanks a lot Angry

I think it might have too much salt in for under 6 months?

Were you told by a doctor to wean your baby early? I'd go back to your doctor for advise perhaps?

dementedpixie · 22/11/2020 21:16

Ready brek does not and has never contained added salt

thecakebadge · 22/11/2020 21:16

It’s not ideal but there’s lots worse things you could be giving than ready brek. Don’t worry about it, although HV advice is quite old fashioned.

Did the rash only come up once she started on it, and not with the baby porridge? If so I’d be inclined to stop the ready brek and go back to porridge and see what happens.

Blondeyoghurt · 22/11/2020 21:19

@thecakebadge yeah I’m thinking stop that completely and go to baby porridge. She had horrendous reflux and it was the only way to stop it south out the effects of medication. I got a phone call from a healthy eating hv saying to switch to ready brek and that’s how the rash has started so I’m just at a loss now!Confused

Whats in the baby porridge? Is it rice based rather than oats?

What milk is it? Could be cows milk protein related too

dementedpixie · 22/11/2020 21:20

Carobel is a product you add to milk as a thickener to help with reflux

Doublebubblebubble · 22/11/2020 21:21

@thecakebadge right?

I have 2 children (10 and 5) and I would honestly stop the readybrek for a couple of days and maybe switch back to babyrice if shes had it before.

Op is it a bumpy raised rash or hives?

Blondeyoghurt · 22/11/2020 21:21

It’s just smooth porridge so oats and milk - she’s had cow and gate milk since birth and never had a problem, could it crop up as late as now?

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 22/11/2020 21:21

For goodness sake guys, advice changes all the time for weaning. A bit of baby porridge or even ready brek isn't going to kill the baby! The op has followed hv advice, what else are first time mothers supposed to do? She's not come on saying she's feeding the baby blended chow mein and chips.
Op, have you tried Aveeno cream for your baby? Two of my dc had very red eczema as babies and the regular (dark blue band on the bottle) one is the best thing I found. Still use it now. Amazon is usually cheapest, less than £4 usually.

Blondeyoghurt · 22/11/2020 21:22

@Doublebubblebubble it’s like typical eczema tbh, but I know it’s not that. It’s absolutely all over her body and feels like grit on her skin. She’s started to scratch it tooSad

Backbee · 22/11/2020 21:23

What milk are you using in the ready brek? Baby porridge essentially has formula already added to it which is why you just add water, but if you use formula/breast milk in the ready brek probably better at that age than cows milk if you are using that.

Blondeyoghurt · 22/11/2020 21:28

@EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide thank you so much for the support it’s really hard sometimes not knowing what to do as a first time mum! I’m going to get some tomorrow now you’ve mentioned it!

@Backbee I just use some of her cow and gate milk with it so nothing new!

@blondeyoghurt

Oh bless her and that kind of rash makes me think its either a soap issue or maybe a change in detergent?

My eldest had eczema as a baby and got a similar type rash from a change in detergent. Obviously I could be wrong but have there been any changes?

Thatwentbadly · 22/11/2020 21:31

Only a paediatrician or a paediatric dietitian are qualified to tell you to wean early, before 26 weeks. Weaning early can potentially cause long term harm to the gut. A baby should not be given any thing with added salt.

I would stop all food and discuss the reflux with a GP. Both my girls had horrific reflux caused by CMPA. I know it awful but early weaning is rarely the answer.

dementedpixie · 22/11/2020 21:32

Ready brek has no salt
