Agreed on the flavour. I'm pretty heavy handed with garlic, parsley and oregano. Alice adores chicken fajitas (from a packet still, one day I'll learn). Curries too.

We found Alice likes tomatoes by accident. I hadn't been giving her raw ones since they're a bit acidic. But she swiped a quarter segment off my plate and the next thing I knew she was spitting the skin out! We've started giving her clementine segments now. We nibble the inner edge off do she can get at the flesh.

Fish fingers are a superb idea. Will definitely try making those next time I go shopping. We have the same beaker @Megan2018! Alice mostly has the hang of it, except every so often she tries to drink out the bottom so it free flows directly onto her tray..

Megan2018 · 24/05/2020 20:54

@Dyra Felicity has some open cups too but sometimes I can’t be bothered to clean up the spillages so the lid is better! But she does enjoy tipping it up still Grin

I made Enchiladas the other day from scratch using Chipotle paste, would work for fajitas too I think. Will see if I can find recipe again, was dead easy (I used to use packets).

@Horehound Myanmar, wow! It’s really lovely Smile

Megan2018 · 24/05/2020 20:57

It was this one - very baby friendly, she loved the beans and it wasn’t too hot (I used a smidge less chipotle www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/chicken-bean-enchiladas

Horehound · 24/05/2020 22:27

Thanks :)

Looks good Megan, i'll give that a go too.

@dyra we have similar cups and arthur is really good at drinking from it but does every now and then he will try to sook from the bottom and ends up soggy.
He absolutely loves drinking from our glasses though. I occasionally allow a tiny sip of juice but the rest of the time I'm battling him away from our stuff and cups of tea etc.

Dyra · 24/05/2020 23:39

Oh wow that recipe is super easy! Will definitely try it out. More stuff to add to the shopping list. Thanks @Megan2018!

Glad Alice isn't the only one that tries to suck from the bottom of the cup.

kyles101 · 24/05/2020 23:57

@Megan2018 I do the exact opposite and put all of DS portion on his tray, and the fruits in the side pockets, it never occurred to me he'd be overwhelmed! He ends up with the strangest combinations in his mouth - prune and quiche, raspberry and cheese 😂

He hates tomato skins, regularly chews on them for ages then still ends up spitting them out, them but it's the first thing he goes for on his tray so 🤷‍♀️

Megan2018 · 25/05/2020 04:09

@kyles101 it was just what my BLW book advised, Felicity chucks half of it on the floor immediately if I give her too much (but will eat the thrown bits when re-presented). But I’m sure not all babies mind Smile

She eats the strange combinations though too as she’ll retrieve bits from the bib from earlier too or I’ll pick up bits from the floor mat.

It’s such fun isn’t it! I’m really enjoying it Grin

kyles101 · 25/05/2020 06:58

God DS would never throw food, the poor dog is mortified that he won't 😂 she'd much rather live with felicity! Sometimes the tray is barely on the table before the claw comes out and he starts shovelling in!

Dyra · 25/05/2020 08:46

Alice usually only chucks stuff on the floor when she's done and sweeps her arms through whatever is left. Stuff hits the floor while she's eating though. We have a target tray, but a mat seems such better. If food lands on the tray, it can be re-introduced. If it misses, it's gone. It's amazing the combos they'll have. Though raspberries and cheese sounds tasty!

Never thought she might be overwhelmed at times.... Sometimes I add more over the course of a meal, others she gets the whole lot in one go.

Dyra · 25/05/2020 09:05

Toast for your little ones. Crusts or no crusts?

Megan2018 · 25/05/2020 11:02

Crusts here unless they are very hard- so sometimes the top darkest crust of the slice I leave off.
She finds it easier to pick up with crust but doesn’t always eat it.

Horehound · 25/05/2020 13:51

Arthur doesn't drop or lob food either but sometimes stuff just slips and ends up down beside his bum on the chair. Often find blueberries stuck to his bum!

I cut the crusts off for Arthur but DH leaves them on. He copes either way :)

Littlehouseinthebigcity · 26/05/2020 15:14

Really interesting to read about you all doing BLW! We're doing mostly purées with some sort of finger food at each meal but want to start giving her more of the same as the rest of us!
Last night I had a bath and...didn't have to get out once, she actually stayed settled from 7pm till around 10. Unfortunately she was then unsettled from 4am but you can't have everything- my bath was very exciting 😁

Horehound · 26/05/2020 15:57

Lol @Littlehouseinthebigcity all my baths for the last 9 months have included Arthur in them hehe
Sounds good! Shame about the unsettled night later on but it's still a bit of a win when things go your way

I am like you, we did mainly purée and Arthur really enjoyed them and still does but he is definitely an independent wee chap and is looking to do things himself so I am giving him more to eat himself but always with a purée on hand in case he gets fed up. I think my worry with BLW is that they don't actually eat as much as they do being spoon fed. I'm happy doing a mix and so is Arthur :)

db92 · 26/05/2020 21:23

We did mainly purées here too as we started early and Ellis was a nightmare with gagging. We're still spoon feeding at breakfast and lunch but food is not longer puréed just mashed if potatoes or cut very small if veggies and meat etc. Lunch is finger foods. And tea time always has finger foods along side the spoon which he enjoys. More often than not we give him the bowl and he'll use his hands to shovel it on his mouth lol.

Getting very stuck on meal ideas here so loving the food shares! Never really thought to give him our curry's or fajitas - will definitely try.

Ellis is a massive fan of cucumber and strawberries. In fact give him and fruit or veg to hold and eat and he is happy as Larry.

Geegrl19 · 27/05/2020 02:23

@db92 we're like you, a mixture. Having to be super organised re dinners so we can all have the same so that's it's something he can manage. Is hard on work days as have to have food to go as soon as we get in. Been precooking and got the slow cooker out to help with that.

Newsflash too. Nate slept till 6.30 this morning. Amazing. Am sure it won't happen again anytime soon but feel like I'm winning today at work!

db92 · 27/05/2020 09:02

@geegrl19 Hallelujah for Nate sleeping, hopefully it continues!

We've been the same with trying to get something we can all eat on work days. To be honest we rarely manage it purely because of the times we both finish and are ready to eat, it just wouldn't work with feeding Ellis. I need to start preparing in advance I think

Horehound · 27/05/2020 17:42

Gave Arthur a beef stew tonight and he enjoyed it along with rice which I'd never given him before :)

No poop though since the last one so that's 4 days I think!?!
I'd not given him egg so it can't be that hmmm

Horehound · 28/05/2020 08:57

Poop today huzzah!

@db92 do you have a slow cooker?

I think we need to start batch cooking and freezing meals.
I made the bees stew two days ago and Arthur had it yesterday then yesterday I made spaghetti Bolognese and Arthur will get his portion today.
He is eating dinner around 5pm and we eat about 8.30!

yevans · 28/05/2020 10:52

@Horehound we used to do the same with meal times. I've just recently changed to us all eating at half 5 together and she's eating SO much better for some reason! As I was faffing trying to prepare her something, I thought I may as well do us all at the same time. Any left overs she will usually have for lunch the next day :)

Horehound · 28/05/2020 11:07

Yeh I think we will move to try that @yevans cause I'm too hungry by 8.30! Sometimes dh doesn't get home until 6ish though and then that's too late for arthur. Another thing is our dining room is far away from the kitchen and I'd prefer arthur eating in there cause it's easier to clean up but we don't have a table for us in there. Guess we need to get one!

Megan2018 · 28/05/2020 11:19

We always eat dinner together as a 3, breakfast and lunch is usually the 2 of us unless DH not working.

It is really important in BLW to eat as a family as it’s how they learn what to do. Letting them feed themselves as part of a social meal is one of the key principles, I think people get hung up on it being finger food vs purées but it’s about eating as an experience.

We will be really limited once I’m at work as she’ll eat at nursery 4 days a week so we are maximising eating together this first year.

We sold our dining table a while ago as it doesn’t fit our new house but not yet bought a new one, but we have an island in the kitchen with a breakfast bar so the 3 of us eat there for now.

db92 · 28/05/2020 14:57

It's impossible for us to eat together during the week as much as I'd love too. By the time we've both finished work and OH is home, it's closer to 6pm and just too late for Ellis. We all eat together at the weekend though and days that I'm not working I'll have lunch with him.

He had his first chicken curry last night and loved it! Thanks for whoever suggested it

Horehound · 28/05/2020 15:10

Aw that's great @db92 :)
I've got to the fish van today so I'm gonna make fish fingers for over the weekend!

I definitely do not stick to any hard and fast rule about anything. Never have!

kyles101 · 29/05/2020 08:41

Ds always has his evening meal "alone" in that we don't eat but at least one of us will sit with him, both if dh is home. It's just far too early for us to eat, especially in this heat. We eat once he's gone to bed. Breakfast and lunch at the weekend we all have together.

Yay for poop!! We've had the opposite problem yesterday- 6 in one day 😳 so I let him have a bit of a carb / brat fest yesterday, so bananas toast and pasta featured heavily.

@Horehound I don't necessarily especially batch cook anymore, but I'll just do a little extra of anything I'm cooking that happens to be appropriate to freeze then ds will have for lunch the next day and a couple of portions in the freezer. My problem is remembering to use them up!!
