That sounds hard @Littlehouseinthebigcity
Hope she feels better soon.

Im having a bit of a stand off with the CM who insists on giving cows milk in a bottle. DS would happily take it from a cup but she's not keen coz of the mess (what mess?). Other than that he's settled really well so I shouldn't complain too much. No tears at drop off by week two is pretty impressive.

I wonder if I'd be better off just skipping milk all together. He has BM when with me. He could just drink water from a sippy cup then.

kyles101 · 17/09/2020 21:26

Argh, I've missed loads!!

Happy birthday to the squishes I've missed.

@iano ds only has water at nursery, he's on cows milk first and last thing only (he absolutely guzzles 8oz at each - he was always a nightmare on the breast and only marginally better on formula - the boy wanted blue top 🙄

I saw my hv a few weeks back who said she'd get back in touch about now to do his 12 month review but that she could see he was doing everything anyway. We had fairly regular contact with her for the first 6 months due to him not gaining weight as quickly as "the chart" wanted him too so it is actually always quite nice to see her, I won't mind her coming again but I know I'm in the minority, even in this area, with having decent hv contact - a friends little girl hasn't seen the hv since she was 6 weeks old, she's now 18 months!!

I cancelled jabs last week due to a cold so they're rearranged to next Thursday. Do we give calpol before these ones?

Dyra · 17/09/2020 22:48

I'm sure Catherine will settle in before long. Hopefully it's just the initial being left behind upset is all you see and she cheers up rapidly afterwards. @Littlehouseinthebigcity

That seems silly of your CM @iano. I thought at 12+ months bottle usage, if not needed, should be discouraged. Maybe if you provide her with a no spill sippy cup as an alternative rather than an open cup? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think giving Calpol prior to the 12 month jabs is up to you @kyles101. I've not read anything for or against it (not that I've read much). I think they're better able to cope now they're older and might not get a fever from the MenB jab. I'm still giving it ahead of the jabs on the spurious reasoning that Alice recovered much quicker from the 16 week jabs than she did the 8 week set. I've also got her some chocolate buttons as a treat.

Dyra · 17/09/2020 22:49

Forgot to mention I gave Calpol prior to the jabs at 16 weeks, but didn't at 8 weeks. 🤦🏻‍♀️

kyles101 · 17/09/2020 23:04

@Dyra milky buttons already in the house here too! He's due at nursery the next day so I hope he doesn't get a fever, although I hope they'd be sensible and not call for testing if it's just after jabs... I think I'll prewarn them...

Horehound · 17/09/2020 23:11

I didn't give calpol for the 12 month jabs as the nurse says they only recommend if the babies do develop a fever but since they are a little older they can regulate their temp better.
But I wish I had! Arthur was fine for a few hours so I was Gona put him to nursery for the avo but just as I called them to say he'd be in he took a really bad turn for the worst
I should have just given him the calpol before the appointment.

Also, he's developed a cold/symptoms about a week after he had the jabs and he is still suffering now.
I have had a shite week and my husband also got sinusitis. I'm sure Arthur has it too. And now I feel ill :(

All whisky trying to get the house red up for photos to put it on the market. And I don't even want to sell really I just got annoyed when a neighbour had a party one day! What a faff.

iano · 18/09/2020 07:12

Out nurse called to say to give Calpol. She also recommended giving two more doses during the day. I thought it was a bit OTT but he had a fever over night.
She also mentioned there may be another fever and rash a week after the shots and again 3 weeks later. Weirdly she told me not to get a CV test if that's the case. Apparently all that info is in the red book.

I tried suggesting the non spill sippy cup to the childminder but she's having none of it. He only has one bottle there so Im not sure if I'm over thinking this. Other than that she's great... so much better than ds1's nursery.

Littlehouseinthebigcity · 21/09/2020 06:56

For the last two nights she's woken up at 4 and been fairly inconsolable unless feeding. First night I managed to snuggle her back to sleep and she slept in with us, this morning I ended up pushing the buggy round the lounge and letting her have an hour in there while I went back to bed. So tired and so frustrating - I just don't know what's causing it!

Megan2018 · 21/09/2020 10:17

Thanks for the birthday wishes! Felicity had a lovely day, beautiful sunshine and a day out.

We are just back from our jabs, not given Calpol yet-will wait and see if she’s bothered. In my NCT group only one needed any so I’ll wait and see.
12 month sleep regression is in full swing here so it can’t make things much worse Shock

I gave Felicity her first cup of milk ever yesterday- she’s never had expressed milk or formula in a cup or bottle but she happily took some cows. I’m not planning to stop BF but thought it would be beneficial if she is used to drinking cows milk for nursery or if I have longer time away from her. She didn’t seem in the least fazed by it but doubt it’ll reduce her appetite for me. She still feeds a fair bit!

Amazing to hear how well you all are doing Smile

Dyra · 23/09/2020 09:35

Happy birthday Catherine @Littlehouseinthebigcity! 🥳 Hopefully she's given you some better nights sleep recently.

Alice had her jabs yesterday. I didn't give Calpol in the end as I had to wake her from her nap to take her to the doctors. It would just have been too much to have barely woken up, to have foul tasting medicine put in her mouth. Fortunately chocolate buttons were all we needed to calm down and she's been absolutely fine since. Thighs are still a little tender, but otherwise she's perfectly normal. We're going to her first soft play session later. So excited!

Littlehouseinthebigcity · 23/09/2020 22:35

Thanks @Dyra !! We've had a nice day despite both covid and rain stopping some of our plans! She has also decided to sprout 2 if not 3 new teeth today, which both explains the terrible nights we've been having and puts my worries that she'll be toothless forever to rest 😂

Dyra · 24/09/2020 09:46

Three teeth at once for her first teeth?! Poor love. No wonder she was raising merry hell. Hopefully the rest will hurt a lot less.

Happy birthday baby Dustydoorframes ! 🥳

Geegrl19 · 24/09/2020 12:34

Ugh, Nate just took an hour and a half to go to bed. He's always out like a light generally. He's been unsettled the past couple of nights. Could it be after effects of injections (he's been fine up to now)? He had them last Monday, but I know after about a week it can affect them I think? He's not got a temp or anything. Was off his dinner which is unusual as the kid is a complete pig normally! Send help, it's gonna be a long night I bet, sigh. At least I've got to sit down and have a cup of tea and a Caramello bar, yum.

@Littlehouseinthebigcity three teeth at once, ouch, poor thing

Dyra · 25/09/2020 14:01

Hoping tonight is going better for you @Geegrl19. Hopefully Nate's got his appetite back at the very least. Your Caramello bar sounds delicious!

Last night was the worst I've had in a long time. Canadian friend needed my advice/a shoulder to cry on about her newborn, so went to bed at 0230. Too cold to sleep. Didn't fall asleep until ~0430. Alice decides it's party time at ~0530 and refuses to go back to sleep. Just... Urgh.... Had to put the heating on as well. It's still only September! It's only Autumn!

On a more positive note, happy birthday babies yevans and Dipsy ! 🥳

yevans · 25/09/2020 19:23

Thanks @Dyra! She's had a lovely day finished off with fish and chips and ice cream.

Sorry for those struggling with nights, it's always one thing after another isn't it! We've got jabs a week on Monday so will get in the choc buttons in preparation 😆

Geegrl19 · 26/09/2020 07:43

Oh @Dyra that was a bad night for you. Not good when they decide it's awake time and it's not!

Have had a couple of awful nights. Had the daycare call to pick him up early yesterday as not right. No temp but extremely drooly. Got him to the docs as was the weekend and wanted to check no inflamed ears etc. He had a sore throat, hence all the drool. Had another bad night but he is brighter today and not so dribbly. Hoping the worst has passed. Came on so quick at daycare, would not have sent him if there was something specifically wrong, but he wasn't at all drooly when I took him in. Think all his top teeth troubling him too. Can see all the lumps in the gums so they're due. Only 3 bottom ones at the mo. He's currently napping on me. He's keeping me warm and at least he gets a good snooze then. Loving the cuddles too and means I'm not doing housework.

Happy weekend everyone! Weather here is shite so not feeling at all guilty about doing nothing, lol.

Horehound · 27/09/2020 21:40

Can I get some advice please?

Arthur has his 1yr vaccination Monday 31st aug. He wasn't good that day but perked up the day after. By the Friday he took ages to go to sleep and was very unsettled and basically from then he has been ill. So we're talking three weeks.
He had what seemed like a cold and he had good times and bad coming in peaks and troughs but on the whole not too bad.
We had to get him early from nursery, I think two weeks ago, because they said he was just not right. My husband also became ill and had what seemed like a bad cold but developed into sinusitis. He was given antibiotics but from what we read online it's usually viral not bacterial and even now he has finished the course, he is still pretty bunged up.
Arthur too. I noticed he was pulling at his ear a few days ago and wondered if he now had an ear infection. In the last three days he has developed a fever. He is VERY unsettled. The first night we took two or three hours to get him down and then he woke hourly. Since then it's been much of the same and we've been managing it with calpol and ibuprofen.
I'm really worried how long this has gone on and he isbt better yet.
On Friday I called the Dr but because I said Arthur had a cough (only at night to clear mucus) they wouldn't see him unless he had a covid test. So I had to arrange a drive through test for him and the result was negative. I called NHS24 again and they said they wouldn't see him anyway as it sounds normal for a baby who has just started nursery Confused

Is it? Three plus weeks of a cold like illness now escalating to fever every day and night.
Usually when he wakes for the first time after we have put him to bed he is all shaky and stuff. He flits between me and my husband constantly and just doesn't settle.
But as I say, I've told all this two two doctors and neither seemed phased.

Arthur hasn't eaten the past two days, only had juice and breastmilk oh maybe some banana.

Today after he woke up at like 4am I got him to sleep at 10am and he slept three hours. Finally he has eaten some toast, orange segments and blueberries but that's it.

He is refusing to be fed to sleep when he wakes up all shaky and crying etc he is never like that usually. We have green snot too.

Ugh I'm so confused and I'm so tired and sad.

yevans · 27/09/2020 21:53

@Horehound so sorry, that sounds really rough. Poor Arthur!!

I think I would be a bit worried about the fever not going away and the shaking. Have any doctors seen him in person? If not, now he has had a negative test could you push for that? I would start a tracking diary of all his symptoms and temperatures etc so you have plenty to tell them and if it's been going on that long they really should see you!!

It's good he is still managing his milk while he's ill though as hopefully that means he will still be getting some nutrition from that so I wouldn't worry about the lack of appetite too much on that count.

Hope it improves soon for you, sending Flowers

Horehound · 27/09/2020 22:01

Thank you @yevans. It has been very hard and I feel so sorry for Arthur because he is usually so happy and there are times when it doesn't matter what we do, we just have to wait for the medicine to kick in before he is calm again and sleeps.

Yes I think I'm going to push tomorrow to see his doctor in person. I did have a really long convo with an out of hours gp yesterday and she did seem good and reassured me it's normal but I just wonder how long is acceptable for all this to go on for.
I'm going to have to take more time off work now (I don't think I've managed to do one part time week yet!) And my husband is only just back to work and is so busy at work but has been doing loads of the night stuff with me. It's been very hard and on top of that we had to get our house ready for photos to get it on the market and had viewings. Omg I know I'll look back at this time and think WTF were we thinking doing this when pretty much all three of us are Ill.
My mum us ill too and she has it on her chest. So it's been different for me, husband, mum and Arthur but we are certain it's bugs from nursery not the vaccination effects as that was too long ago? Just reminded myself he did have a bit of a rash today too.
And last night he had a fever but cold hands and feet and I just read it's a sign of sepsis or pneumonia.
Honestly it's just endless worry. I'll have to call Dr first thing. But when Arthur has had medicine he seems alright-ish. It's when it wears off it is hell

yevans · 27/09/2020 22:09

Have you done the glass test on his rash? And definitely mention all the new symptoms when you ring in the morning! Wow. No wonder you're tired you poor thing, you've all got so much on! Fingers crossed it's just a nasty bug he's picked up and he can shake it off soon but it feels like the longest days on earth when they are ill doesn't it! Do you have anyone who could help out doing you some meals etc until you're back on your feet?

Horehound · 27/09/2020 22:26

I stupidly didn't do the test. I will the next time he wakes but I don't think it was like meningitis.
Hmm I'm worried now but at same time don't want to wake him!

Hmm usually would ask mum to help with food bit she's too Ill. We do have a lot of food in the house but it is a chore to make stuff. We had toast for tea last night at 10pm :(

Uft will let you know how it goes.

Stroan · 27/09/2020 23:57

@horehound I'm so sorry you are all feeling so rubbish, especially Arthur.

When DD had her MMR, she wasn't well for 6 weeks afterwards. She mimicked each of the illnesses one after the other, exactly as they warn can happen. It felt really unfair that she got hit by all three. She also lost her appetite completely and became a fussy eater, it's taken 4 years to get her to eat a variety of things. Our Doctor wasn't overly interested once she realised that DD had just had the MMR.

All that said, I would still want him checked out to rule out anything else. Especially with new symptoms, hope you can get him seen soon. Poor wee thing having a Covid test, I cried when DS had to have his done

OP posts:
Geegrl19 · 28/09/2020 07:05

Oh no @horehound, that's terrible for you all. Is so shit that the doc doesn't even want to see him, makes me so annoyed as they're so tiny. I would be calling back and insisting. They should at least be checking him over and also seeing as he had a negative test. Nate has had some horrible viruses since starting daycare - I remember one went on for about two weeks and his temp just kept fluctuating. Eventually he just got better. He currently has another one and I've had him at the docs twice over the past few days for a once over. He's just not himself. Haven't had him tested, but our numbers here have been nothing like in the uk. Poor Arthur having to have that done. I hope that they let you take him in. Sorry, don't have any other suggestions, but I feel for you all. Fingers crossed he starts feeling better soon. Bloody sodding daycare germs - Nate has been sick more times in these past few months than my girls have combined in their whole lives. It's so frustrating.

yevans · 29/09/2020 08:07

@horehound how are you getting on? Did you manage to get to see a GP?

Horehound · 29/09/2020 08:57

Hi all thanks so much for thinking of us.

So the morning after I posted he didn't have a rash and he seemed a tiny bit brighter so we just thought we'd keep him home and keep doing what we are doing.
I would say he has improved a little more since then but not much. He actually had two pieces of pasts yesterday...
My husband has stayed off work to care for him and I'm working from home so I can flit between the study and seeing them.i just can't take annual leave because I've already switched to part time and I'm taking over a project tomorrow from a guy who's been made redundant so I need as much time on with him as I can. I feel guilty though

So things that have changed are: the past two nights he has fed more in the night. previously he was refusing everything and we could only give him medicine. So that's something at least. And I think last night he didn't wake up quite so many times.
He has crusty wax in his left ear so I'm absolutely sure he has or has had an ear infection.
I suggested this a fair number of days ago but my husband wasn't so sure.
Anyway I said again today about taking him in to Dr but my husband thinks they won't do anything it's just a case of waiting for him to get better. I kind of agree now. Since we have seen a bit of improvement, he isn't getting worse and he did have a better afternoon.

I feel so sorry for him though. :(

The nursery called and did say this is normal for a baby starting nursery and that she thought it could be worse this year because the babies haven't seen many babies to have swapped germs with yet.
