From bits I’ve read online, 4oz is about the max a newborn can consume in one go and they should be feeding 8-12 times so lasting No more than three hours sounds about right. That’s how my LO is anyway, but she’s also less than two weeks old. I’m not expressing yet so not sure on actual amounts but my midwife said feeds should be somewhere between 10-45 minutes.

shellby28 · 07/04/2020 22:11

@Jesskir89 thank you! It was pretty scary but all turned out ok. She was 5lb 12oz, after we were told she was already 6lb 3oz at our 36 week scan, so that was a surprise! Hope you're doing ok

Jesskir89 · 07/04/2020 22:16

@atomcats freddie feeds anything from every hour to every 4 hours its mad. When I express for his night feeds he's taking 3oz now and he's 3 weeks and 4 days old. He's a hungry horris lol. @shellby28 I was told at 37 weeks freddie was 6lb 8oz he was born 15 days later and weighed 6lb 11oz. Them scans are way out lol.

Well think I won the biggest baby prize haha

My not so little one was born 11 days late swerved the induction by a matter of hours! He was born 5th April at a whopping 10lb 6oz!!! Can't believe it haha

Labour wasn't so bad opted for an epidural as pain was intense (probably as he was so god dam big) don't know why I didn't have one with my first baby as it made the experience much more positive.

Hope your all well!!

1Pinkfluffyelephant · 10/04/2020 09:42

@jollybobs89 I think if I would have gone full term I might have been fairly close. My little boy was 9lb 9oz at 38+5 Confused

shellby28 · 10/04/2020 10:16

@Jesskir89 all good here! Little lady has put on 1lb in 12 days, bringing her back up to over her birth weight at 6lb 6oz which I'm really happy about. Was overly worrying about her weight so its put my mind at rest. How are you doing?

NixGostling · 10/04/2020 11:27

I cant believe my little girl is 3 weeks old tomorrow! She is starting to get too big for some of her babygrows already so we must be doing something right! She is suffering a bit with trapped wind though, poor thing. Newborn digestion has a lot to answer for doesn't it?!
Have a good easter Mums! Xxx

abbs1 · 10/04/2020 13:26

My little boy is 3 weeks old already time is just flying by!
Hes really struggling with wind and pooing bless him. He was up nearly all night but he managed to finally pass a stool this morning. As I cant breastfeed hes on formula and but it seems to be making him more constipated even with alternating ready made and powder formula as recommended by my midwife. Any ideas on how to help with this?
I've got the health visitor coming round next week to weigh him as he was only a tiny 5lbs 12oz so hoping hes back to his birth weight or maybe more. I feel like hes grown.
Hope you all have a lovely Easter 🙂

Jesskir89 · 10/04/2020 15:21

@jellybobs89 congratulations! And I bet that hurt lol. @shellby28 brilliant news about the weight gain well done you! @NixGostling happy easter! And yes mines suffering with wind too. @abbs1 sorry hun not sure about constipation have you looked on the NHS website? Freddie is 4 weeks old today and is getting chunky. When we weighed him last week he was 8lb 6oz, I bet he's nearing 9lb now x

Our baby is just over three weeks now and has gone from being completely chilled to really unsettled. He was vomiting most of every feed and wasn’t re gaining his birth weight. GP started him on gaviscon which helped the vomiting but he is now windy, constipated and screaming the entire time he is awake Sad luckily he is feeding and sleeping 4 hours between feeds (went 5 hours over night). Has anyone used carobel as an alternative to gaviscon, I’ve read some stuff online about it doing a similar job but doesn’t bung them up? Hope you are all doing ok in the current situation Brew Flowers

Jesskir89 · 11/04/2020 14:48

@1pinkfluffyelephant sorry to hear that it must be hard for you and poor baby. Freddie suffers with wind but not as bad by the sounds of it. Hope babies better soon. We're OK thanks just bored and missing family x

@cassie124 @Jesskir89

Sorry I'm late to this group. My baby was born at almost 34 weeks and I was originally due in March so just wanted to to see how everyone was doing.

Regarding the breast pumping - as he was in special care unit I was pumping through the night and then took the milk in for him. More recently I've been trying to up my milk supply as I wasn't producing enough for him (he didn't seem satisfied at all after a feed!) I had to revert to formula tops up until my supply increased. When I started I was barely pumping much 40ml - 80ml and his bottle feeds through the night were around 90ml. To increase my supply I was pumping hard - after each breast feed 15 mins on each side and through night too when he had bottles. I did this for a good few days and my supply has increased. I'm now pumping 80ml after a feed and 140ml during the night.

I saw someone else was struggling with baby taking bottles - I found the nuk ones have worked well with combination feeding.

Jesskir89 · 13/04/2020 16:09

@NailQueen9 hello and welcome! 34 weeks wow! Do they know why baby came so early? How's he doing now? I'm glad you've managed to increase your milk supply sounds like hard work! X

@Jesskir89 we are doing ok, thanks how are you getting on? Good news about the weight gain! I know I’ve found it reassuring that ours is gaining even if I feel like breastfeeding isn’t going perfectly (latch issues...).

DD is more fussy at the moment than she had been previously, feeding little and often and preferring to sleep on one of us rather than her crib... I think it’s her way of making up for having a relatively chilled first few weeks 😂

I’ve tried pumping now but finding that she is guzzling a bottle really quickly and it doesn’t seem to satisfy her. I’m managing around 3oz so maybe she needs more? I only gave a basic hand pump so I might get more out of something more substantial. Does anyone have any recommendations? I like the idea of the Evie pump, but the price is pretty eye watering!!

@jollybobs89 congratulations and wow that’s a heck of a size!! Hope you are both recovering well

@NixGostling we’ve also moved on from some of the baby grows, it’s crazy how much she’s grown! Although we are also using cloth nappies which bulks her out a bit. But even then she was 8lb when she arrived so they were likely to be short lived!

@abbs1 Did the health visitor offer any advice for the trapped wind? DD seems to struggle with pooing at tines and it’s horrible to see her so upset and straining Sad I hope yours is feeling better now

@1Pinkfluffyelephant sorry to hear baby is being sick and having issues with wind etc. I hope the medicine is starting to help

@NailQueen9 Thanks for the recommendation for bottles! Did you notice a big difference when you switched?

abbs1 · 13/04/2020 16:31

@atomcats the health visitor just said to alternate between powder formula and ready made. My little boy really doesn't like the ready made stuff but I keep trying. It definitely helps with his poos but he still passes a lot of wind. I find keeping him upright for 20-30mins after feeding helps and also massaging his tummy when he starts to strain and it helps to pass the stool.

NailQueen9 · 13/04/2020 17:33

@Jesskir89 he's doing well. Ten weeks old already though developmentally I should base it on his original due date. No reason for him coming early, my waters broke and he was just ready to meet us!

NailQueen9 · 13/04/2020 17:36

@atomcats he was on the premature bottles before that so it's hard to compare. I just know that now he will take breast or bottle happily but the nuk bottles have a nipple like teat apparently.

Re the pump - I got a medela one because that's the brand they have in the hospital. I went for a single side one as the double side one was double the price!!! I keep trying to justify if by thinking imagine how much we would have spent on formula!!

EventRider1 · 13/04/2020 17:38

Late to this group but hoping I can join in!
My daughter was originally due on the 27th March but luckily she decided to rock up 10 days early on the 17th so we managed to get in and out of hospital before a majority of the rule changes and lockdown.
Hope everyone is coping okay with being shut in at the moment. Fingers crossed we can all get back out for the summer 🤞🏻

1Pinkfluffyelephant · 13/04/2020 18:36

@atomcats I use the lansinoh double electric pump and did with dc1 too. On amazon for between £75 and £114 roughly when I got mine. I’m only managing around 4oz max at a time but that’s because I don’t pump over night and now annoyed with my self because I feel like Ive ruined my supply. Baby started fussing at the breast, clamping on my nipples and thrashing his head around and I ended up getting so sore I physically couldn’t feed him. Started to pump but didn’t really commit to it enough Sad

singme · 14/04/2020 07:47

Hello to all the new people! This feeding is all consuming isn’t it. Spend all my time worrying about it. Latch on the left side is really painful no matter what I do position wise, think she’s just got a shallow latch on that side. I’ve got a hakaa breast pump, I usually get quite a bit if I pop it on the side I’m not feeding from. Otherwise I get a wet bed and baby gets a wet babygro. Still feeling a bit tearful, stitches are still sore and spend my life covered in milk! Hope it will all get easier!

Jesskir89 · 14/04/2020 12:27

Hi girls and welcome our new members :) for those who are struggling with baby latching on ask your health visitor to check for tongue tie. Freddie has it so is on the list to have it done. Regarding breast pumps I've got the Bella baby on amazon for around 40 quid it's brilliant. I give freddie expressed milk at night then in the morning I can express about 6oz then I go again late on after he's fed and is sleeping. Glad you're all doing OK in this shit time. @atomcats were good thanks @NailQueen9 glad all is well :) @singme I was the same but it gets easier. Just look at baby when you're feeling low x

@jesskir89 the last 2 nights have been a nightmare! Little one up all night just crying fussing hungry and just wouldn't let me put him down for nothing! During the day hes only sleeping like an hour before waking and crying again. I'm shattered. Any ideas on why this could be? Growth spurt maybe or just needing mummy? Hed been doing so well at night so no idea what's going on. Hes 4 weeks old.

Jesskir89 · 17/04/2020 22:07

@abbs1 sorry to hear this. Is he struggling with wind? We're having to burp freddie for ages before putting him down otherwise he's crying with trapped wind. Just a thought x
