Newborn support group anyone?

Anyone else want to join me for a bit of moral support?

DC3 was born on the 28th February (so pleased he wasn't born on the leap year day!)

He doesn't like being put down so I'm pretty exhausted. DH and I are taking turns to sit up with him at night but as I'm breastfeeding, I'm having to do more. I know it's not forever though.

Milk has just come in so I'm feeling pretty emotional at the moment. Again, I know it will pass!

I'm just about to attempt to put him down in the crib, wish me luck!

I had ds weighed yesterday. He was 11 days old yesterday and had put on 12oz since birth.

Had a bad night last night with him waking up every 45 minutes avd taking half an hour to put down every time. I'm pleased he went back in the crib each time but I'm exhausted. DH goes back to work tomorrow and I'm terrified of getting my 8 and 6 year olds ready for school on time. DH leaves for work at 6.30 so can't help at all.

@cupcupgoose 12oz is amazing well done mama!
I just had mine weighed too and he's passed his birth weight already (5days old now)
It took DS1 3 weeks to reach back up to birthweight so I'm feeling pretty good about things today.

We are co-sleeping for now. Can't get him down in the cot and I wasted so much sleep time trying with DS1 I've decided to just embrace it (but also making sure we are doing it safely following lullaby trust guidelines!)

I'm worried about when my husband is back at work too. More for bedtimes for me though. He rarely makes it back in time and I don't know how I'll get DS1 some one to one attention and get him to sleep when DS2 just wants to be held!
Not to mention when he has to work away which happens 2-3 times a year!

I'm sure we I'll find a rhythm...

CupCupGoose · 11/03/2020 19:31

That's great @hiimmumma, especially since you're dealing with a tounge tie too. Is it any less painful today?

We kind of 3/4 crib 1/4 Co sleep. Like you I wasted way too much time trying to get DC1&2 in the cot that if it takes more than 2 attempts to get ds in the crib, I just put him in bed with us until the next feed.

If bedtimes prove difficult on your own, maybe try a stretchy wrap sling. I got mine for £15 on amazon just to use around the house.

My husband has been back at work for three days so I'm getting used to looking after her in my own in the day. Tonight is a hard night 😩 I've been feeding her for ages (cluster feeding) and she keeps throwing it up so I'm covered in my milk that keeps leaking and her sick. He's home so could take her so I can finally shower and go to the toilet but I'm trapped feeding! Exhausting..

I need to ring my gp and book my 6 week appointment, I'm sure I was told they would ring me but haven't heard anything

hiimmumma · 11/03/2020 21:43

@cupcupgoose yes much less painful now. Just the forceful let down at the start of the feed really. Does hurt if his latch gets lazy but I just take him off when that happens.
He threw up blood today which was quite alarming so I took him to a&e. They think it's just from my nipples but it was quite red and looked like clots so they were a bit concerned. They took his blood to send off and sent us home. Hopefully will all come back ok. He's happy enough in himself.

I have got a wrap sling so I'm sure we can find a way to make it work. It's just usually I get into bed with DS1 and talk about our day and how we are feeling and cuddle him until he is asleep. Managed every night so far but I know one day it will be tricky to do that. It's just kind of our thing, I don't want to have to stop.
It's replaced nursing to sleep once I got pregnant.
Can't imagine juggling three of them! Any other tips? 😂

Lcw29 · 12/03/2020 10:25

My DS is slowly improving with his colic. He finally did a massive poo yesterday and slept for 3 hours lol been using infacol and comfort milk to help. Just taking time. He also is a bit refluxy but manageable

Can't wait for bleeding to stop now though. I hate wearing pads! Gone a bit brown red today but very light. Although I need paracetamol for my c section pain and the shops have run out due to people stock piling! Will have to ask my doctor for some I guess...ridiculous!

LolaLollypop · 12/03/2020 13:28

Anyone else still suffering with sore nipples? When baby latches it's really painful, it does ease off after a while but my boobs have started throbbing when baby isn't on them now - like sharp stabbing pains. I really need to get down to the BF drop in but with all this Coronavirus stuff going on my DH wants me to avoid any groups etc!

My back is also killing me Sad. Perhaps I just need to get my position and latch sorted out!

MamatobeFeb20 · 12/03/2020 13:31

@sulkysukey - i got a 6wk check sent out to me and as far as im aware, its still going ahead. I was at the GP yesterday with DD and it was so busy but apparantly nobody with flu symptoms is getting seen?!

@CupCupGoose - I've had such a juggling act getting my eldest ready in the mornings on my own with a constantly breastfeeding 5week old! Take my hat off to you managing two other children!

Glad the colic symptoms are easing off @Lcw29. DD got diagnosed with silent reflux yesterday at the GP and d we've been started on Losec (omeprazole) - bit wary about starting medication but after three VERY unsettled days, i need to try something, im demented. She doesnt even tolerate the sling in the daytime! Interestingly enough, she goes down in her nexttome at night and sleeps for 2-3hrly stints, probs cos shes SO knackered by that time from crying and nap refusing!

MamatobeFeb20 · 12/03/2020 13:34

@LolaLollypop - yes!! My boobs go like that at times and also my back pain is insane from feeding constant and rocking her a lot. Wondering if its cos my core is so weak from pregnancy so my back is taking a lot of the strain?!
As for the boobs, ive heard that sharp, shooting pains can be a sign of thrush. Does baby have a white coating on their tongue? I'm wondering if i have latch issues as i can often hear a clicking sound when DD is swallowing. Shes gaining weight well and its not painful to feed but that could maybe explain some of DDs reflux/wind symptoms too?

LolaLollypop · 12/03/2020 14:36

@MamatobeFeb20 just googled Thrush and I have just finished a course of antibiotics which can cause thrush Sad Oh nooo surely not something else to see the doc about?! I'm going to work on my latch this weekend and see if the pains improve then I guess speak to the GP - really want to avoid doctors practices at this current time!

My LO does have a light white coating on his tongue but this could be milk residue.

Just want my boobs to stop hurting!

Salire86 · 13/03/2020 09:57

I thought dd was coming out the other side of this over extended growth spurt on Wednesday but yesterday was awful. She cluster fed from 1pm to 12am only taking one brief nap. I don’t even know how she stayed awake that long. I left her sleep against me last night and she slept for just over 4 hours which is the longest she’s ever slept at night. Anytime I took her away from the breast yesterday she would get really upset and I’d get a max of 5 minutes out of her with distractions.

I’m just wondering now could it be silent reflux and that she’s comfort feeding because of pain. She gets very fussy at the breast at times and goes red and scrunches up so I take her away to wind her but she wants to be put straight back on. This doesn’t happen consistently throughout the day though and most of the time she appears settled as long as she’s on the breast.

She appears content so far this morning so I’m really hoping we have a better day but I’m thinking should I bring her to the doctor before we head into the weekend.

MamatobeFeb20 · 13/03/2020 11:31

How old is she @Salire86?
My DD does similar - she'll feed and feed and feed yet fusses and arches her back. She doesnt settle outwith feeds some days. My HV suggested it was silent reflux and the GP agreed so prescribed her omeprazole. We're only on day 2 of it so don't jt know if its helping yet but yesterday was horrific, today shes so settled but she seems to follow that pattern of having a really unsettled day followed by a great day.

CupCupGoose · 13/03/2020 12:38

@Lcw29 so pleased your ds is a bit better and had a poo! Horrible seeing them in pain. I'm also getting fed up with the pads and bleeding. Probably tmi but wearing them constantly is making me a bit sore around my knicker line.

@hiimmumma that must ahve been scary! Have they rang you back yet? When he's sucking, he will probably draw more blood out I suppose?

DS is getting really fussy and hard to settle in the evenings, similar to what some of you have described. Once eventually I get him to sleep, around 11/midnught, he will sleep really well but it literally takes about 4 or 5 hours of walking around the room, rocking, feeding, burping ect.

This is my second day of DH being at work and I was actually early for school this morning. It helped that it was non uniform day and my kids have school dinners on Fridays so no packed lunch to make. I already had ds in the sling so ended up wearing a pyjama top on the school run under my coat.

Salire86 · 13/03/2020 13:57

@MamatobeFeb20
She’s 4 weeks, she’s been like this for 2 weeks now. I rang the hv this morn who suggested infacol for two days and if that doesn’t help to try gaviscon. Fingers crossed one of these helps her.

hiimmumma · 13/03/2020 15:26

@cupcupgoose yes bloods came back fine and it's not happened again so I think we are ok! Feeding much better now. DS is one week today.

I'm so sick of pads too. I thought I was getting to the end of it then I went for a walk and it's like something shifted and it's so heavy again. Just want it to be over. Between being pregnant and breastfeeding I've only had two periods in the past 4 years so really not used to this.

In good news my DH's work have just given him an extra week full pay paternity leave so he'll be off for 3 weeks now Given everything with corona I think they are just happy to keep people out the office as long as possible!

Lcw29 · 13/03/2020 18:18

@hiimmumma that's great about the paternity leave . My husbands work may possibly start home working which actually would be nice at the moment.

Some people have gone mad though. My son got spoken to really angrily by a worker in a supermarket for touching a trolley key fob because of germs. He was with my MIL who also got spoken to very rudely. Had to complain to the manager who was horrified! People go crazy and panic.

hiimmumma · 13/03/2020 19:54

@Lcw29 what! That's ridiculous. It's really making things hard. Usually we would be out to soft play or the library something with DS1 but he's coming to the end of a cold and had a cough (everyone at his nursery has it, pretty sure it's not corona seeing as it's all the opposite symptoms!) and I just feel like I can't fake him anywhere in case he coughs when we are out.
Not to mention all the visitors that aren't coming 'just in case'. I know it's better to be safe than sorry but I'm really struggling to enjoy the baby with a grumpy 3yo bouncing off the walls!

lovesT · 13/03/2020 20:31

@Salire86 we have been giving my little girl infacol for about a week and a half and think it does help her with burping but have been prescribed Gaviscon which I picked up today and have just given her the first little dose because she's been really sicky. It made me feel really nervous because it's not as easy to give as infacol - you have to boil and cool water and mix the powder and it's such a tiny amount for newborns!

She's been really bad today, feeding and then coming off screaming and arching 😢 it's so horrible to see them uncomfortable. Hopefully the Gaviscon will help.

I'm also fed up with pads but she's 4 weeks old tomorrow and it's stopped enough I don't feel I need to wear pads at home! It will end!

She's really awake at the moment and seems happy which makes me feel better 🥰

sadtoday21 · 13/03/2020 23:01

Hi ladies! Do you mind if I join you? My baby is 9 days old and I’m really struggling with feeding.

Any tips for increasing milk flow when pumping? I’m only getting 2 fl oz max per session and baby drinks this in 15 mins! I can’t pump enough for dh to feed him while I sleep and therefore not sleeping at all because he feeds every 45 mins or so. I’m exhausted! I also can’t use right breast atm again because he has a poor latch on that side and just tore half the skin off my areola. Help! 🥺

sadtoday21 · 13/03/2020 23:22

@sulkysukey also wondering whether postnatal check-ups will be postponed due to Coronavirus. My GP is closed indefinitely for all routine appointments. I asked the health visitor to do a video chat instead, but I think the MW needs to come next week to weigh baby again and do the discharge? I’m tempted to cancel, but I think it’s probably important to ensure baby is gaining weight back.

Thanks to pp for advice on colic - I think my baby has this too. I can’t get him to latch properly on right hand side at all and I need to learn a new position for it (he just tears up my nipple with the cradle hold). Vertical hold hasn’t worked for us yet either though, I think I may be doing it all wrong...

LolaLollypop · 14/03/2020 12:32

I'm also wondering whether my health visitor will come next week. I really need some advice on breastfeeding but not sure what to do in regards to waiting for the HV or seeing the GP. I presume all non urgent cases won't be seen anyway?!
I think I'll pop to the local breastfeeding cafe on Monday. Not ideal and DH doesn't want us to go but I'm worried I've got thrush and if I have, it will need sorting Sad

LolaLollypop · 14/03/2020 12:33

@sadtoday21 have you tried the rugby hold? This one really worked for my LO in the first few days. Its a bit tricky to get into position but once you get the hang of it it's quite easy.

sulkysukey · 14/03/2020 20:25

My GPs just sent a text to say they're cancelling all routine appts so I guess our 6 week check won't be going ahead. I was hoping to start running again after getting the all clear so might just get on with exercise but take it steadily. 🏃‍♀️

To get my DD more vertical for feeds I just do the standard (cradle?) hold but move myself over onto one hip so I'm kind of on my side if that makes sense. Really helps with her choking/coughing at let down which in turn makes her less windy. 💨

lovesT · 15/03/2020 18:41

How cautious is everyone being about taking their baby out before vaccinations? It hadn't really crossed my mind because we can't really be house bound until she has them (we've been to the supermarket and quite a few other places already!) I'm not asking so much about the corona virus, just generally are you going out without worrying too much?

CupCupGoose · 16/03/2020 09:41

@lovesT I've never stopped going out as normal before vaccinations. A bit different this time though with the whole corona virus. My older dc both started coughing really badly all night last night so I've got to keep them off school for a week so we won't be going out this week. Between getting up with dc1&2 and the night feeds with DC3 I didn't get any sleep last night.

@hiimmumma great that your DH gets another week off.

Sorry haven't caught up with the thread properly yet, I'm just way too tired. Hope everyone is okay.
