New thread for our incessant chatter!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
MargosBeenPuttingSpellsOnMN · 16/10/2007 12:43

I'd like a mcMansion as well! (How would I keep it tidy?)

jabberwocky · 16/10/2007 12:53

lol, Margo, I think having all the extra closet space to cram things in would be my solution

bp, I feel the same way about the g&t threads. Have bee on there a few times and I get a handful of good responses and a bunch of snippy, sarcastic ones I'm so used to the great support network on MN that it really saddens me that it is apparently not going to be available much for this part of my life.

Thanks everyone, for letting me rant a little on this thread

Elibean · 16/10/2007 14:10

Another vote for a McMansion, if it means there's room for us lot

I've never visited the G&T threads, but am baffled as to why people would bother to go there to be sarcastic and snippy (I'm sure they do, not doubting you for a minute Jabber!). If they don't have the need for G&T support, why go there?

Oh wait, maybe

It does account for an awful lot of nastiness in life

Jabber, I hope you get loads of support - anything thats not totally mainstream needs it, IME. xx

castlesintheair · 16/10/2007 14:13

Jabber maybe you should start a thread in education and choose your words carefully so like-minded souls will get you and those who are just out to G&T bash won't notice it. I "belong" to a support thread called "dreamer of dreams born out of my true time, why should I strive to set the crooked straight". We all have "dreamers" which is a very broad term btw. Take a look and you'll get what I'm banging on about I might have to join you if you do start one as DS also has a v.high IQ (top 2%). He fits into so many holes and so few, if you get my drift (hence the thread title). Sigh.

jabberwocky · 17/10/2007 02:11

Thanks everyone You guys really are a lifeline for me in so many ways.

castles, I looked for your thread but didn't find it. Evidently ds1 doesn't get his brains from me, lol. Can you link to it?

FunkyGlassSlipupandyouredead · 17/10/2007 08:02

I havent been to the G&T area ofMN. Sounds a bit grim. I can imagine its quite a challenging situation actually.

DD2 beng a sweetheart and waving all the time. It is very sweet, especially as she does it as she's goingto bed as a way of saying goodnight.

DD1 wrote her name all by herself yesterday and came to show me when she had finshed. I am very proud of her. She's only 3.5 and I had no idea she could write any letters by herself othr than O as we always write her name so she can trace it in cards etc. [proud mummy emoticon]

castlesintheair · 17/10/2007 14:43

Jabber this is the dreamer thread. It's been going for quite a while so there's lots to read so if you don't want to wade through it all look near the beginning & you'll see our "dreamer's" profiles. dreamer's thread

Elibean · 17/10/2007 20:38

Love the idea of a dreamers thread. I would visit, only dd is more of an anarchist than a dreamer One of her grandfathers was actually an anarchist - as in Spanish Civil War etc - so clearly dh's fault

FGS, lovely Well done both dds.

babypowder · 17/10/2007 22:20

Oh, I want an anarchist in my past

On the history front, I was amazed to learn recently that my dad's grandmother never lived in any more than 2 rooms in her entire life. It seems incredible, and so remote from my own lifestyle (not that I live in many more than 2 rooms, but you know what I mean) And my mum had to teach women living in remote Canada what a bathroom was for and how to maintain a home when they had been used to a more nomadic existence. And this was the 70s! Don't know I'm born, me.

DD2 had her 10-12 month check yesterday. She's not 10 months yet, but has trebled her birth weight already. I just love the percentile charts. Apparently, DD2 is short, fat and has a big head. Really, she is truly beautiful, if a little chubby.

Elibean · 17/10/2007 22:25

Wow, bp, that sounds like some interesting history to me! How come your Mum was doing that?

I too have big headed dds. Though dd2 seems to have skidded down from 50th to just above 9th centile since starting weaning...not the cherub dd1 was, she. Gorgeous, though, and thankfully, eating like a piggy again to catch up.

jabberwocky · 18/10/2007 03:39

Bigheaded babies here too Ds2 is up to a bit over 18 pounds so over 3 times birth weight as well. Of course, he was initially realllly small, especially after losing half a pound in the hospital.

FGS - very impressive!!

FunkyGlassSlipupandyouredead · 18/10/2007 08:14

DD2 is 16lb 15oz now. I'm vey pleased as that is exactly 10lb heavier than at birth. Sheis identical in weight to DD1 at this age but 2cm shorter (we measured her too ) so looks fatter.

Indith · 18/10/2007 12:53

Hello!

What is this I see about moving to Jabber's? Did we not try that last year but it never happened? False hope that is. Still, just in case, I'll have the full English in the morning please. Eggs with nice runny yolks and bread fried in butter not oil.

On a more serious note Jabber, congrats on the G&T thing. The G&T threads always seem a little odd to me. I don't know if that is because it is a fairly recent thing (that we classify kids that is, there have always been some who were rather more academic than others). But always remember that at the end of the day kids are kids. Their educational needs must be met but not at the expense of their childhoods and their friends. Being marked out as different and treated differently is hard.

I am descended from a clog maker. Pretty boring me.

Ds has not yet perfected the crawl. He manages to put one side forwards then goes flat on his tummy, pushes up again and throws the other side forwards. Pretty effective if rather violent. Launched himself at the bath yesterday (from on the floor, I don't let him practice in the bath!) and got a big bump. Think he is immune though as he just carried on with this big red mark on his head.

Think ds is catching on to 'bye bye' and to creche. Until today he has just looked bemused when we get there. Today I sat him down, he started playing with the toys. I waved and said 'bye bye' and he burst into tears.

Ds is as stubborn as his mother. Night one of CC he woke at around 11 and we all finally got to sleep at 2. Woke again at 5.30 so I fed him then and slept til 7.45 when I had to wake him up to leave for creche. Night 2 he only woke once around 4 and took an hour. But he was less frantic and more fussing. Wonder what tonight will bring. Today is his full day in creche though so potential for mayhem.

Right ho time for translation theory. Joy

Gloria42 · 18/10/2007 13:09

Hello from me too.

Once again I need your help - someone has stolen my DS !!!!

The contented, smiley boy who naps during the day and sleeps all night has disappeared and been replaced by a clingy, snotty boy who wakes at 5.00 and won't go back to sleep even though his eyes are almost shut!! He seems to have had one cold / virus after another for about a month now, the poor soul just can't shake it. We've had rivers of snot and vomit - note to self must remember to buy those shares in Kleenex!

Have I just been lulled into false sense of security by original DS?? Is this new DS the reality of babies???

All those with nocturnal LOs, when they are wide awake at 3am, what do you do? Try to persuade them back to sleep or play with them until they make the decision by themselves?

castlesintheair · 18/10/2007 13:42

I've no idea what DD2 weighs as I haven't had her weighed since 8 weeks but she feels pretty heavy to me. I recently found out that they've changed everything (again) and you have to arrange the '8 month check' yourself so now that she is nearly 11 months, I suppose I should do so. I only want the free books

Glad you enjoyed the dreamer's thread Jabber. See you there sometime, though DS is making so much progress I'm starting to feel he doesn't qualify.

Gloria, sadly the 1st year of a baby's life is pretty snot filled. It's building up their immunity. Arm yourself with Calpol/Medised etc, get some plug-in inhaler thingies and console yourself with the fact that aged 5 and a half DS rarely gets colds/bugs anymore. Not long to go!

Gloria42 · 18/10/2007 13:58

Only 5 years to go....

SachaF · 18/10/2007 17:39

Hmm, I was told that Medised was supposed to make them sleep well not in this house!
I think the pain and diarhea is now teething related (please God please, there would then be an end in sight!), I love the 'only give for 3 days' instructions on calpol, atm it feels like I'm meeting this by giving for 3 nights, then having a night off, then giving for 3 nights again! Can't be good! (Before I get told 'bad mummy' I only use it at night, last night he was crying / screaming for 2 hours, 1 1/2 hours in to it all I gave him Calpol).
DS is a little over 8 kg (18lb ish) on my home scales - twice his birth weight - hard to believe that would be 3 times for some babies!
I come from a teacher and a driver...
Soon CC crying will happen in this house again, soon....feeling bolstered by Indith's experience!

MargosBeenPuttingSpellsOnMN · 18/10/2007 22:00

How interesting! My uncle is doing our family tree, he's been doing it for years!

dd2 is waking for long periods of time during the night, cue one tired and grumpy mummy at work today.

I'm glad I only work p/t

I'm not sure that cc would work for dd2, she doesn't seem to ever give up crying unless you pick her up.

Indith · 19/10/2007 10:26

Horrible isn't it Gloria. We have just got over a good month/6 weeks of illness. . I went for lots of cuddling at night and a fair bit of ds sleeping in our bed. Oh and calpol, medised and anything else I could get my hands on. Nelsons teething granules are good as the camomile helps calm them and there is nothing there that will do them harm if not teething.

I also have given calpol etc for far longer than 3 days on the trot. Like Sacha though usually only gets given at night.

Ds woke at 4.50 today! Fussed for half an hour then I fed him on the principal that the alarm was set for 6.30! Hate is when they wake that close to getting up time. Ds of course then had to be woken at 7.45 to get ready for creche. I'm liking this return to sleeping in, he always has been an early to bed, late to rise baby and really needs it.

Margo ds is very stubborn on the crying front but does seem to be working so far.

Just read over what I wrote yesterday. Doesn't sound how it was intended. Tis a minefield. I've seen it go very wrong and I know how hard it is to get right. The best of luck to those nurturing the next generation of brilliant minds.

FunkyGlassSlipupandyouredead · 19/10/2007 11:17

Hi everyone.

MN can be a great place but it can also remind of you of stuff you'd rather keep buried. like here Interested to know your thoughts as feeling very low about it today. Couple with conversation with DH agreeing we are unlikely to have any more children.

Gloria42 · 19/10/2007 12:14

Just heard from one of my mum's group pals, her DD has chickenpox! Now wouldn't that be the cherry on top of the cake !!!

I assume you need to have spots to have cp? Or just general unwellness??

Indith · 19/10/2007 14:54

FGS, I hope that talking about it helps but remember, she is beautiful and wonderful however much stress she put you through to come into the world.

Gloria, may aswell get it over with!

Oh yes...I am at home.....on shiny new broadband! Haha, you won't be able to get rid of me now!

babypowder · 19/10/2007 16:31

FGS - sorry you're feeling blue. I do understand how you feel, but hopefully you feel supported by MN too.

I've just had to phone our doctor's surgery as I found DD2 gnawing on a horse chestnut casing I know that the conkers themselves are toxic, but wasn't sure about the casings. I could almost hear the doctors and receptionist guffawing.

babypowder · 19/10/2007 16:31

And, I keep meaning to ask, do any of you feed your LOs baked beans (like from a tin, not homemade?)

FunkyGlassSlipupandyouredead · 19/10/2007 17:10

Thanks Guys. Just a low day i think but I often wonder what impact the birth can have on the child...

Anyway,

Gloria - I have heard of chicken pox with 1 spot so yes I expect possible.

Indith - glad you have new broadband

Babypowder - sorry but lol @ horsechestnuts. What are our babies like? into everything... I gave DD1 baked beans (tinned) at this age. I've tried to give them to DD2 but she doesnt like them (a girl of taste, like her mother). I have however given her tinned spaghetti....
