BP - also meant to say that if you are concerned then talk to her teacher. I think that if they teacher was concerned then they would already be talking to you.

babypowder · 06/09/2007 20:31

I'm probably just being silly - they've only been in school for 3 weeks, and I'm sure that no one expects them to be able to read independently yet. She'll get there - she's not daft.

I am, though! Bloody motherhood sometimes feels like a test of my skills

babypowder · 06/09/2007 20:33

Margo and FGS - hope the LOs get better soon. The bugs doing the rounds atm are horrendous.

Olihan · 06/09/2007 20:37

BP, is she sociable? Does she have lovely manners? Can she sit and listen and follow instructions? Can she dress herself? Can she toilet herself independently? Does she play independently and co-operatively with other children?

All of those things are far more important than being able to read when they start school. If she can do most of those then you can consider yourself to be a fabulous mummy who has perfectly prepared her dd for school.

They go to school to learn, she doesn't need to be able to do anything academic yet, so don't worry.

magnolia1 · 06/09/2007 20:55

Fgs, hope she is on the mend now xx

Bp, dd4 is 4 but one of the youngest so probably in the same school year as your dd. Her name, mummy, daddy and her sisters names are the only words she can recognise.
We read to her at bedtime but she can't actually read anything at all.
I was worried about her writing her name when she starts reception (tomorrow) and she can now do it but her nursery teacher said they are happy if they can write the first letter!! So reading is really not anything to worry about so soon xx
Welcome back Calm, hope your summer was good x

Ds1 now has 6 teeth and as of yesterday decided he could actually crawl rather than roll
But he makes a bee line for eveything he shouldn't tough
And keeps picking up bits my hoover has missed

magnolia1 · 06/09/2007 20:56

tough = touch

accessorizewithbabysick · 06/09/2007 21:11

hello all, nice to see you back calm
v.sorry to hear of all these poorly babies, what is it about september? hope they improve soon margo and fgs [hugs]
I know nothing about reading, bp, haven't even remotely thought about these things as ds1 a year off school. I was more concerned with him being out of nappies quite frankly! I just figured if I read to him and pointed out letters and so forth he'd pick it up when he went to school. Until now, he's been quicker at some things than his friends born the same month and slower on others. Same with ds2 (who clapped for the 1st time today, so pleased with himself!). So I figure it's the same once they hit school. Your dd may well be responding really well to something else her bf isn't.

castlesintheair · 06/09/2007 21:44

BP, agree with what others have said about being able to sit down when asked & wipe own bum etc being more important, but will just add my recent experience. DS has just started year 1 (he's 5) and he could recognise lots of words & write a bit when he started school last year but he still came home with the wordless books for a few weeks. I was quite surprised (though not concerned) at the time. I think it is to do with how much they read aloud in class and, as I've probably mentioned before, DS has language issues. What I'm trying to say is some kids are more confident and vocal and it took them a while to realise his ability. Btw, he can read & write pretty well now (for his age probably above average) though his handwriting is pants

Hi Eli glad you had good hols

Everyone else, sorry to hear about lurgies etc. My 3 are fine but I seem to have acquired a mysterious hacking cough from somewhere

DD2 crawls at lightening speed now. She is so determined. She is also standing up and 'cruising' around anything she can get her hands on. She did a sort of zombie free-style walk yesterday, so could be the start of things ... gulp!

weirdbird · 06/09/2007 21:47

Have recovered from bee trapped in hair incident, but it still give me the ebee geebies to think about it.

We are also snot central here, not had much sleep the last 2 days, poor thing can't breath properly but she doesn't sound as bad as some of your LO's, no rash or anything like that.

Margo and FGS - Really hope yours start improving soon, am hoping that today was the worst of it, the only thing I keep reminding myself is that they do get better very quickly when they are this small

BP - DD1 has just started Year 1 and can now read some words and can write a reasonable amount, she couldnt do any of this when she started last year, could just about write/ read her own name and that is it. As long as you are reading with her on a regular basis you really have nothing to worry about!

FGS - Your DD looks adorable in her glasses!

WB, love the one of dd2 behind the stair gate .

BP, sorry, ds2 woke as I was typing my post to you so I just sent it as it was, it seems a bit blunt as I meant to add some smileys!

Glad all the poorly babies are well and truly on the mend, seems like they've been giving you all a rough ride.

Mag, 6 teeth? Ds2 is still toothless and showing no signs of any coming imminently. Congrats on the crawling, at him picking up the bits the hoover missed - ds2 is my hoover .

Castles, how is ds getting on with the SALT? Has it helped any?

Eli, rubbish sleep here too - STILL. Up every 3 hours last night, including an hour and a half awake at 3:45. When will he realise Mummy is NOT fun to be with at that time in the morning?

babypowder · 06/09/2007 22:20

Oli, your post was lovely. Thanks for that. I'm such a coward, not posting on a behaviour or development thread!

I'll stop being so self-obsessed now, but thank you all for your words of support

Mags, your LO has nicked my LO's teeth, and I'd like them back now, please.

Olihan · 06/09/2007 22:21

S'ok then, was worried I was being bossy!

weirdbird · 06/09/2007 22:21

LOL - In which case the other 2 are my Lo's g

Though tbh I am quite happy there are no teeth while I am still BF'ing!

babypowder · 06/09/2007 22:23

WB, they are so gorgeous! Loving the mohican

Olihan · 06/09/2007 22:25

Me too, WB, I'm dreading the first time I get properly bitten, gums hurt enough!

spina · 07/09/2007 09:41

hello everyone
hope you're all well(obviously if I read the whole thread I'd have some idea!!)

Really miss my MNing. hope that once life settles down (building site, return to work, etc wise) I'll be back on here....

...... so see ya on the the "Dec 06--I can't believe they're turning 21 years old" thread!!

magnolia1 · 07/09/2007 11:02

@ spina

You can all have ds1's teeth. Every time he gets new ones he grates them against my boob while feeding
They come in 2's as well and he looks so cute.
I can't upload pics as for some bizzare reason my username is not my registered username (although it actually is!) and so I am going to have to re register with a slightly different name.
Will go do that now

magnolia74 · 07/09/2007 11:08

Ok so I am back with and extra 73

Will go update profile with pics now

magnolia74 · 07/09/2007 12:25

I have done a profile page and uploaded pics

margosbeenplayingwithmynoonoo · 07/09/2007 12:39

at how slim you are after 5 kids

Although, I bet you have no time to eat!

Thank you for all the hugs - dd1 is showing signs of improvement.

dd2 has finally cut her first tooth!

magnolia74 · 07/09/2007 12:40

Margo, I hate being this slim I am losing so much weight feeding ds1 the gp wants me to stop Not going to though.

Glad your dd is getting better. xxx

jabberwocky · 07/09/2007 12:49

lovely pics, magnolia! Can't believe 6 teeth ds1 did that tho, went fron 2 on the bottom to getting 4 at once on top. I've had a few nibbles while feeding but nothing too terrible yet. But the nips on the arm really hurt.

fgs, dd1 looks very cute in her glasses. I'm glad it all worked out.

so at all the sick little babies. ds1 and 2 have been mildly snotty w/ cold/allergies but nothing worrisome as yet.

I've been on the phone and computer every free moment (which is not that much) looking at schools abd setting up ds1 for IQ and assessment testing. It is now a given that we will have to move to a better school district and the process of choosing where is overwhelming at times. I think for next year our fallback position is p-t montessori (40 minutes away each way) and home-school. So not a permanently do-able situation. I'm trying to gently make my parents aware of the impending move as they just built a house to be near us last year

AQ, will email you soon regarding poo

magnolia74 · 07/09/2007 12:57

Oh what a headache for you Jabber Hope it doesn't get too stressful xx

FunkyGlassSlipper · 07/09/2007 14:49

hey spina

jabber - i feel sick every time i think of schools. our local one is crap and we are looking around at the moment doe DD1 next year.

magnolia - lovely pictures !

olihan - teeth hurt. trust me.

DD2 is on the mend. She was up at 6 then slept 8am until 11am had lunch and then went for a nap at 1pm and is still asleep - doubl . all the sleep seems to be helping though.
