Thought I'd start a thread to give somewhere for Jem, Washersaurus and Bresha to discuss their little ones and make all those of us waiting impatiently jealous!

Who will be next??????

HI everyone,

OOh I've only been on holiday for a week and it's all changed on here. Not had time to catch up completely but just to say glad to hear you are feeling better Pink.

Best thing we bought this time was the tummy tub

Worst thing - reuseable nappies - just not got into the habit of using them instead of disposables.

Alex is now refusing to take a bottle - I introduced one at about 6 weeks and then Dh was giving him a dream feed each night for last couple of weeks. We went on holiday and he is now refusing to take it at all - his big brother was the same looks like I've got another battle on my hands took ages for DS1 to finally give in and take a bottle - glad I'm not due back at work for a while.

GillL · 30/10/2007 09:48

Dd's starting pre-school today - my little girl's growing up I know she'll love it but I can't help worrying about her as she's quite shy and a bit of a pushover when other kids take toys away from her. I'm sure she'll toughen up.

We didn't buy much for ds as we had all the equipment like baby gym from dd and we are given so many clothes that we haven't even bought any 0-3 or 3-6.

  1. Worst thing - Murron's pouch sling. He's far too big and heavy to lay in it now and it kills my shoulder and he doesn't like sitting in it either. When I had dd it was the baby bath.

  2. Best thing - We haven't bought much other than a cot. I'll probably think of something later.

  3. We've got a Graco buggy from dd and dh wouldn't let me buy a new one. I wanted one where the baby faces me and the shopping basket is bigger.

My2WooooooooooGhouls · 30/10/2007 13:41

my goodness mamamila - what a trip! and you've to do it on a monthly basis ??- hope it's easier next time. bet you were glad to get home after that.

gill - how did your DD1s first session at pre-school go? my DD1 started playgroup (is that the same thing? i get confused with the differences between scotland and england) 2 mornings a week in september and we had a few rough weeks where she cried but soon settled down. she loves it, gets to do all the messy things that i don't have the time to do with her at the moment.

DP forgot to take his bank card today - so i've spent time whilst dd2 is sleeping buying xmas presents on-line with his card now i just need to break it to him gently how much i've spent....

shrinkingsagpuss · 30/10/2007 14:08

You are sooo naughty!! I have internet banking... on DH's account. He never reads his staements, so I could rtansfer out what I want!

conkertree · 30/10/2007 14:14

hi folks - that does sound an exciting way to get jabs mamamila - guess it would be more exciting if it was a choice though rather than having to do it.

another terrible night last night for us . Awake from 12pm - 3.10am - with about 20 mins sleep in that time to lure us into a false sense of security and let us just get off to sleep before waking and screaming again. I ended up in tears as well cause its so horrible when there is just nothing else you can do for them.

the only thing that he seemed to like other than feeding was biting down on my finger, so went out today and bought some teething gel and have tried it on him - certainly stopped him crying and he's sleeping just now. will see if it works tonight. fingers crossed.

thought he'd sleep lots today but not so far. guess he doesnt need as much sleep as his mummy.

am heading to the north east next week to do a course for 2 weeks (first block out of 5). dh will be looking after ds and bringing him to me at lunchtimes and either morning or afternoon break for feeds. really hope it works cause it could be the key to me being able to give up my job, but am nervous given how ds has been this week.

about the reusables - i hadnt got into them until about three weeks ago, but now that i am used to using them everyday, i find them really easy. still use disposables from time to time and at nights, and the mix seems to work fine.

My2WooooooooooGhouls · 30/10/2007 14:40

it's good to be naughty sometimes everything is mostly for DDs so he (hopefuly) can't complain too much....

conker - big hugs, it can be so hard when they don't settle and you can't figure out what's wrong (if anything). i think we've all been there and will be again. normally when we have nights like that DP and i end up falling out too. which really doesn't help things. DD2 has been a bit unsettled last night and today too (wonder if it was something about babies born on the 7th in SRI?? ) either that or they know that the next round of injections is only a couple of days away. when i'm burping her she really loves to bite down on my fingers. dont' know what teething gel you got but i found dentinox the best as you can put it on more often than the likes of bonjela...

and you've got me trying to guess what type of course it is . i'm sure that it will all work out ok.

conkertree · 30/10/2007 14:47

hmm wish i'd asked about teething gels before going out cause i did wonder about getting that one so i could put it on whenever he cried, but in the end went for the bonjela one as i thought it might be stronger and so help cut out enough pain so that he can get to sleep at night before it gets sore again.

and yes, did end up falling out with dh cause everywhere i've read says he can put him down more easily if unsettled at night cause if he smells milk, even if he doesnt really want it, he will think he probably does, but dh did the usual of turning over and hiding under the covers every time he cried. wouldnt mind but the only thing he has on today is a work conference thats one of these ones you go and sit at the back and fall asleep in.

hope you gots lots of lovely things for your dds. i have no idea what we will get ds but will have fun looking.

just need to get a wee bit more info about the course to make my final decision that i'm going and then i will reveal all (although may well be an anticlimax).

GillL · 30/10/2007 14:52

She was fine thanks My2Woooooo. My mum took her as she will be taking her when I go back to work (so she doesn't get confused). I went to pick her up and she came running over to me with a big smile on her face and gave me a big hug. Apparently she was fine for the first hour or so and then got a bit upset. The lady asked her if she wanted to go and play with her cousin. She did that for a few minutes and then went off on her own and was fine. She really loved playing with the playdough (it was homemade and was all over her hands). She's currently doing 2 sessions per week and will do 5 sessions after Easter when she's 3.

Poor you conker. My dd had me in tears on many occasions when she wouldn't sleep and I was exhausted. I hope your ds starts to sleep better soon. My nephew had 2 teeth by the time he was 3 months.

tokentotty · 30/10/2007 15:55

Hey all, just back from Peanut's first injections - boy did he shriek when the first one went in !!! Still, he's asleep in his car seat now as thought I'd leave him there for half an hour as he was so soundo. What with that and his horrid cold I feel really rather sorry for him !! Having said that, after his weigh in last week at 9lb 8oz I was a little nervous about this week despite stuffing him up but needn't have worried that's for sure - 10lb 10oz !!! Go on fatty !!

Glad to hear DD's first day went so well Gill, must always be a bit of a wrench. As for your injection trip mamamila - holy cow, how stressful !

My2WooooooooooGhouls · 30/10/2007 16:18

i think when it comes to teething you end trying anything and everything to find what works for your wee one! that's if your lucky to find something that helps them!! dd1 had 8 teeth by the time she was 8 months and boy did she suffer with them coming through (and so did we - especially on the way back from holiday in Skye stuck in roadworks at fort william for about 1.5hours!) with another couple of hours drive after that.

gill - i'm glad her day went well - playdough is very popular at my DDs playgroup too

tt - over a pound in a week, that's good going!

mamamila · 30/10/2007 19:21

oh TT i hope your wee guy is happier post jabs than Mila. she's had a 38-39c fever today and just not herself. calpol has helped but i hope she's better tomorrow.

also wondering how you like the amby hammock?

is anyone else still swaddling their lo's? we still use the miracle blanket most nights, she often still has a bit of a scream time after 6ish when she's tired, although it's getting much less and she can sometimes be distracted from starting. she's all smiles once strapped down in the swaddle blanket thing, i'm going to remind her of this when she's older! but she's growing to tall for it so i've been using a cotton sarong

and when are you all going back to work? what will you do with the lo's?

Hersetta · 30/10/2007 19:32

Hello all,

first time in a while as DH is now self employed and working full time from home so is commanding control of the computer so have n't been able to find the time to log on, read all the posts I missed and post one of my own. However tonight, DH is out at football and our new broadband connection is working great and DD is asleep in her buncer so can say hello to all.

We are all doing great. Caitlin continues to amaze me by being such a good, happy baby. She's eating well every four hours and still sleeping through from midnight to around 7.30-8.00. We are so lucky as from the day she first slept through at around 4.5 weeks, she hasn't had a single night that she has woken up after then.

I know you were discussing Cebebies and Baby DVD's but has anyone with sky discovered Baby TV or Baby First. Two channels dedicated to babies. mostly they play classical musical with swirling balloons, kites etc which Cailtin stares at intently for 20 minutes before falling asleep. They showed a cartoon this morning with different animal sounds and she got very excited by the sheep sound. Instead of baaaaaaa, she has been squeeking out Ahhhhhhh and then giggling - very cute. Dh has started recording Thomas and friends for her and they watch it together after he has eaten his lunch - not sure who is enjoying it more to be honest!

Banana - sorry to hear your DP is not being supportive. He needs a kick up the backside untill he realises how lucky he is that you have done all the night feeding - my DH looked ike a zombie when he had to do it for 6 nights when I went back into hospital.

I do love the hellium balloon idea though and may try to get her one when we go shopping on Thursday and she spends and hour every night just kicking and generally being squiggly on her change mat on the sofa every night.

TT - glad to hear that Paddy had a great week and put on loads of weight - sounds like your plan worked so if it aint broke, don't fix it. We are off to Spain too in 2 weeks - have a baby passport which is so cute. We went and had her photos done at a photograghers (only five pounds) and something about the photographer make her laugh manically. Fantastic photos, but not suitable for a passport as even babies can't be laughing - he had to turn away and then she looked all erious so he turned around quickly to snap her before she satred laughing again - needless to say we also purchaed the laughing photos and were given to the grandparents as wallet size photos - which they all love.

Mush dash - she is waking up and will scream like a banshee for food in abount 20 seconds I reckon. 19, 18, 17........

conkertree · 30/10/2007 19:41

wow hersetta - sounds like you're having a great time. Hope it continues that way.

Despite ds not being quite himself this week, am still loving it all. Just wish he could do 7 hours at night like your lo.

i am tempted to try swaddling now mamamila as he's been having trouble getting settled - although might try putting my t-shirt in his basket first - got advice on another thread about that.

as for work, am going back mid April, and going back three days a week.

but am going to do a kilt making course starting on Monday, with a long term view to giving up my job probably when we have a second lo, and doing that as a part time, stay at home job. got final confirmation of the course this afternoon, so am really excited. nervous but excited, as it will hopefully be the answer to my desire to stay at home full time .

pinkrangernowwobbles · 30/10/2007 20:11

Just added more photos

GillL · 30/10/2007 22:12

Glad Paddy's putting on weight now. You must be very relieved.

I don't think dd ever really suffered with teething. I never really knew when she was teething anyway. She was a real dribbler anyway and never got a temperature, nappy rash etc. I used to give her teething powders and dentinox teething gel as a precaution though. A lot of people I know swear by the teething powders. They're in a blue and white box (old fashioned looking). I'll get the name if anyone's interested.

I haven't swaddled mamamila - ds is such a warm baby that I was worried he'd overheat. He's very good at getting himself to sleep at night though. I can put him down awake and he will be soundo within 20 - 30 minutes.

Good to hear from you Hersetta. I think you have an advanced baby there. Ds is 11 weeks now and I have only heard him laugh once. He doesn't really talk much either - the odd coo here and there.

Can't see your pictures pink.

loler · 30/10/2007 22:14

Conker - good luck with the course, sounds interesting. Don't think I would havw the patience to do it - i've tried superglueing buttons on though!

Had an interesting morning. Changed ds 3 times in an hour after exploding nappies! On the last change he sounded like he was gagging, thought he was being sick so went to wipe it and found he had a mouthfull of wee! Smiled nicely though so must have tasted nice. Got to the doctors for 8 week check to find I'd got the wrong time and was 1/2 hour late for my appointment. Blood pressure was sky high - though she said that this was understandable (anyone else had this?). Then .......shockingly after what everyone else has said............I had an internal.

Back to trying to carve a pumpkin face!

Hersetta · 30/10/2007 22:27

Got all that to look forward to mam - we have our first injections on Thursday. Have got in the calpol just in case she is poorly. To be honest I'm not surprised poor Mila is unwell. Your journey to clinic sounds horrific - very stressfull on all of you I bet. Hope Mila feels better tomorrow. Love the photos of her with the masai by the way.

Thanks Conker. I know I have been really lucky. just hope it continues when I go back to work full time in March. Looks like it may only be for a month though as will be made redundant on 31st march most likely. Thought it was going to be 31 December but things have been pushed back a bit. The thought of going to interviews whilst my brain made of jelly horrifies me. i am just so forgetful at the moment. Missed my hospital check up last week when I thought the 25th was Friday - wish someone had told me earlier it was Thursday ! Doh !!

Sorry for the appauling spelling earlier - was rushing to type everything before she woke up. She is now asleep again having exhausted herelf by filling her nappy and chatting away madly on her change mat whilst my mum listened on the phone.

Hersetta · 30/10/2007 22:38

Hi Gill,

Wish my Lo woud settle herself to sleep - she has to be utterly exhausted to ettle herself. Most mights she either falls asleep on me or in her bouncer with the vibration on - the vibration is vital. I can then lift her into her basket and then into her cot without a murmur.

People have been saying they think she will speak early. she is the youngest in our NCT group and is making lovely baby noises and giggling far more than the others who are mostly five weeks her senior. She laughs at the oddest things though - her favourite is the kitchen light which she stares at every morning when we have a bath and get changed - she absolutely loves it. Also the prints in our living room are a big success as they have lots of bright colours. She mostly ignores the toys we have bought her though and just stares and laughs at things we haven't spent a penny on - very frustrating.

mamamila · 31/10/2007 07:02

hi all,

nice to catch up with you hersetta, your baby sounds like an angel. do you think it's worth buying those baby einstein dvd's?

i hadn't thought of her watching tv she's started to enjoy 10 mins lying in her pram staring at the roof and whatever else catches her eye. mila's very smiley and throaty giggles in the morning

conker- kilt making sounds great

loler- had to laugh at your poor lo peeing on himself!

and mywee and gill you must be relieved to have your older dc's in playgroup

how do all your lo's fall asleep, Gill- does your lo cry at all to settle or how does he do it? do you just put him down once he's fed before he's too tired? please tell the secret!

mila sleeps really well 8.30pm - 4 or 5am then a feed in our bed and sleeps till 7 or 8am. but in the day will only sleep in the sling. we've tried putting her into bed or pram awake but she's never settled alone since week 1 or 2. sometimes she'll fall asleep feeding or being held but is awake in 5 mins if we move her.

we can't do much from 5pm ish as she's so noisy! i'd like to change the evening routine as it's shame she has her screaming session around bathtime. i can never give her massages after bath as always screaming. she gets overtired and wants to feed but won't and just seems to need to be held and cry off and on until around 8 when she'll have a long feed and conk out.

if she sleeps earlier than 8.30 she'll wake at about 3 full of life

oops missy calling

GillL · 31/10/2007 08:57

How awful for you Hersetta being made redundant whilst on maternity leave.

Mama - I give ds his last feed and wind him. Sometimes he falls asleep while having his bottle but most nights he stays awake. I put him down in his cot as soon as I think he's got no wind left. Occasionally he will cry but most nights he is perfectly happy. When he does cry I put a dummy in his mouth and he's fine. I try not to give him a dummy though as I don't want him to get dependent on it to get to sleep like his sister was. It's nice having a baby who can get himself to sleep. I actually found out by accident one night that he would do this as I needed the loo and put him down. When I got back upstairs he wasn't crying so I left him and have done so ever since. I used to have to rock dd and pace round the room and wait til she was really asleep before I was able to put her down, otherwise she would wake up as soon as I put her in the cot. It was back breaking.

Mama - dd was already going to my mum's on the days she now goes to playschool so there's no real difference for me. Mum takes her so I don't have to be up and have the 2 dcs ready by some silly hour of the morning (playgroup is near where mum lives and no where near me so she can take her when I'm back at work).

mamamila · 31/10/2007 09:27

oh you're very lucky Gill. esp to have your mum help so much. does lo settle to sleep easily in the day too?
mila slept for 30 mins in her pram this morning but woke up tired and grumpy so she's back in the sling. i have to do catch up on all accounts at end of and beginning of month so i'm standing up using comp and it's killing my shoulders/ back and legs!

i always planned to let her learn to settle herself but she just doesn't seem to be that sort of baby. if we put her down she'll eventually start to cry and get more upset until she reaches car alarm pitch. in the evening if she's in scream mode there's not much we can do with her but swaddle and jig her about

hi to banana too! has your dp sorted himself out yet? mila also has a good old stretching and farting session on waking

stretchmarks · 31/10/2007 10:02

Loler - lol at your lo weeing in his mouth

I put DS2 down to sleep in the evening after his feed approx 7pmish. He settles himself within 5-10 mins some evenings with a bit of crying depending on how tired he is.

Getting him to sleep in the day is a different matter. Sleeps fine in the morning in his pushchair on our walk to school and will have another sleep when we go back to school in the afternoon. In between this it's really hit and miss - sometimes a bit of rocking to sleep, hoovering around him or if we are going out he will fall asleep in the car usually or whilst walking in pushchair.

We had a bad night last night, think his cold is back again he seemed to be waking himself up and couldn't settle at all - brought him into bed with us at midnight, hoping for an afternoon nap myself today to catch up if not it'll be an early night for me tonight - anyone else find themselves in thier pyjamas before thier kids ?

My2WooooooooooGhouls · 31/10/2007 10:12

conker - kilt making - wow, that's a fantastic skill to have! and obviously will always be needed. hope you enjoy your course.

TT- how do you manage to look so glam!

i think i'll be going back to work in april - about 30hours a week. i've just had confirmation that this years annual leave (around about 265 hours - about 9 weeks) will be carried forward to next year - hooray - so i'll have about 18weeks annual leave to take between april and march. just need to decide how to take it all e.g. lots of short weeks rather than taking an extra couple of months off.

we probably cuddle to sleep about 95% of the time and 5% she settles herself. mostly cuddle at night time just in case she wakes DD1 who doesn't need any excuse to wake up. i read somewhere (think it was 'what to expect the first year' that around 6-9months is a good time to teach them to settle themselves to sleep). the times that she does go herself just put her down sleepy and switch the light off - she'll wriggle for a while and then fall asleep (then then wriggle in her sleep all night long ).

i must be spending too much time on mumsnet as i dreamt about it last night - loler nominated me in the person with the best nickname who isn't married catergory

shrinkingsagpuss · 31/10/2007 11:31

Well, thats our first jabs done as well. Evie is currently grizzling away, but she is tired as appt was at a silly time.

I'm afraid she self settles too - not sure how or why, but I can put her in her cot at night wide awake and smiling, she makes meowing noises for a little while and then goes to sleep! Hurrah. During the day she is a little less reliable, but she is currently settling slightly.

Think I may have over booked myself this mornign - got a friend and her 2 yr old coming for lunch, and DS's surrogate g/parents have just rung to say they are coming for coffee.... oops.

Oh yes - the screaming 2yr old had started at 8.30 this morning... is this a record?

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 31/10/2007 11:40

Hi folks, just scanned through all the posts -you've been busy! Might not have time to post much, my sisters due to come over any minute.

Well, JAMES had a good night last night, I on the other hand just couldn't sleep at all, I was awake all night. I don't know why!

On the subject of getting off to sleep, during the day J generally has two naps, one shortly after we come down in the morning, after his "breakfast", and one in the afternoon. I just put him down when he loses his sense of humour, we don't have particular times yet.

He flails and faffs and screams when I try to cuddle him to sleep, I think because he's such a sweaty betty! So I swaddle him and pop his dummy in, and he's asleep within one minute. Then I undo the blanket because he overheats easily. He spits the dummy out himself very quickly, the only time he'll have one at all now is when he's swaddled, because he can't get to his hands, so no danger of him getting dependent on one.

Loler, your poor little ds, getting a mouthful of wee! I remember when James wee'd in his eye... he's an opportunist with things like that, as soon as his nappy is off you're in danger of getting sprinkled on! He also manages to trump at me everytime I peek in the side of his nappy to check if he needs changing. Charming!

Mamamila, I never knew life was so difficult for you where you are, I feel lucky now, my gp's surgery is literally at the end of my street. I still hate taking him for injections though, I have his second lot next thursday, dreading it! And no my dp hasn't really sorted himself out, but I get tired of arguing so things are quiet here at the moment.

ooh, sis here, back later x
