Hello everyone. My DS2 was born on July 4th and I have been waiting for a "Babies born in July" thread since then, but none has appeared! (at least I don't think it has). So I thought I should start one, I didn't have Mumsnet for DS1 and I wish I had. I thought it should be July/August since almost all of the July babies were/are late! How is it going for you all?

Phoebe made me laugh so much today. She is really into her feet at the moment, and as she is a thumb sucker, she started sucking her big toe! PMSL! I can just see myself telling the story to her 17 year old self's boyfriend to embarass her!!

Hi all,

Well, I've finally had some time to read through all the messages that I missed and I'm glad to read so many positive things. I am really enjoying Thomas at the moment. He is just so gorgeous and so much fun. He's just over 5 months now and learning to sit on his own. He's had a bit of a cold recently as well but nothing too serious. He's had sticky eye since birth, really, so I've been prescribed eye drops several times. He now has an ointment which is twice as strong. It seems to work but I still think it will probably come back as soon as I finish the treatment. It's almost as if I can't take him outside, that the cold air or wind just causes it to flare up. Maybe I should have the rain cover on his pram permanently
He is sleeping really well. He takes 2 or 3 naps a day and sleeps 12 or 13 hours straight at night. This has coincided with the introduction of solids. He seemed very ready so I started him quite a while ago. And he's loving it. I now give him three 'meals' of solids a day but he still drinks at least 3 bottles of milk too. He loves his veg but he hates bananas!

Speaking of milk, I have recently given up breastfeeding. I was just so sick of it, so sick of all the expressing I was doing. So last week I was quite uncomfortable, trying to express as little as possible to let the milk dry up. Now my boobs are quite soft again, I had almost forgotten that they were ever like that. Not that my old bras fit yet... But I'm so happy to be done with it!

I have not had a period yet although I've felt like it was coming several times. In a way I just wish it would come so I would not have to worry about it surprising me.

Sorry for this long and random post but I just wanted to catch up on everything. Hope everyone is having fun getting ready for Christmas.

Eshay · 18/12/2004 21:21

Oh, and I've not taken him swimming yet. I would really love to but I too feel a bit uncomfortable in my own body just yet and the problem with Thomas' eye makes me put it off as well.

merrykittymas · 18/12/2004 21:27

aww I got a thumb sucker too just when she is tired she sucks her thumb to send her off to sleep.

Eshay I'm not surprised you have given up breastfeeding with all the expressing well done for getting this far with it, sorry to hear about your little man's eye bless him.

I bought Abbie a bear from the bear factory today I know she's had loads as gifts but I wanted one from Mummy and Daddy on her first Christmas, it's really sweet and we've named it nik-nak because she makes a sound that sounds just like nik-nak I'm sure she'll appreciate it when she's 17.

Spacecadetiscomingtotown · 18/12/2004 21:40

All of mine , have and still do suck their thumbs, apart from Emily, she cant find hers and sucks on her wrist instead!!

hermykne · 19/12/2004 14:33

hi everyone
have had no internet access for4wks! distraught without my mumsnet
anyway
wish yiou all a happy christmas

my ds is a little monkey, still breast ffeding as he refuses to take a bottle despite dd even trying to get him to take it.
real pain at this stage as he is still feeding in the night , he is 19wks so i'll keep going but i had to start the solids to see if that lengthened feeding times and it did.
but anyone know how much at what stage? g ford says 2 scoops in wk 2 to 3 , whats a scoop.
had a jar of banana rice pudding the other day and after the pear and baby rice he was looking for more so i gave him some , heloved it? and still took the milk afterwards.

moondog your baby sounds similar to mine.
must print this off to catch up

Xmasspongecake · 20/12/2004 10:55

I've tried Harry on some baby rice and banana but he isn't really interested yet so I think I'll leave it a week and try again - repeat until he takes it!
He's still waking up for a night feed, occasionally 2 but that's only if the evening goes wrong in terms of feeding and sleeping times.
With his cold he's been coughing and snuffling so much he's waking up about hourly though, which is really tiring. He goes back to sleep very quickly but not before he's thoroughly disturbed us .
He's still gorgeous though .

merrykittymas · 20/12/2004 16:30

hi all

having a terrible day couldn't get on a bus today cos of the pram so had to go home and get the sling Abbie's been really grizzly all day as well. But she did have 3 cubes of sweet potato and was looking for more had to give her booby. DP's transfer to Scotland not looking good either its at his managers discetion and he's being a complete a about it

Eshay · 21/12/2004 10:32

Hi MerryKittyMas,

Sorry to hear yesterday was not a good day for you. I hope today is going better for you and that you DP's manager makes up his mind about the transfer. What happened with the bus? Was it too busy or was it one of those silly ones where they've got a post in the middle of the path?
Good that Abbie liked her sweet potato. Solids can be a real mess but it's so much fun.

MrsEvs · 21/12/2004 22:11

On the swimming thing, really want to take Phoebe, and would even bear the horrors of putting myself in a swimming costume (just wont look in any mirrors and be in denial!), but what I was worried about was her getting cold? Can you take them in the normal pool or does it need to be a specially warm baby one? We have a YMCA near here that does baby swimming classes from 6 months so I might do that with her. (They also have a child care facility attached, and if you're a member they will look after the baby for up to 11/2 hrs if you want a swim yourself - bonus, will have to join!)

Phoebe now wants her own spoon when she's eating, apart from sticking it in her mouth she also likes to whack me over the knuckles with it . She hasn't really grasped what she's supposed to do with it and mostly just chews it, with a tendancy to stick it too far in her mouth and make herself gag!! I shouldn't laugh but she always looks so suprised! I agree, solids are messy but fun

merrykittymas · 21/12/2004 23:04

hi all

Had a better day today thanks. Got Abbie weighed she's not a whopping 14lbs 6ozs bless her she's intent on sticking to that 25% centile line not that I follow it much. I think I will have to get the 3-6 month vests out now!

The buses already had other prams on them I just wonder what would of happened if there was a wheelchair user wanting on. I can't fold the buggy while holding DD and bags, as if the driver would have waited for me anyway.

Spacecadetiscomingtotown · 22/12/2004 09:00

kitty, I remember v clearly struggling to get on a bus when dd1 was a toddler and ds1 was a baby .I used to hate it.I had a really heavy pushchair, a baby and a 2 year old.It was a nightmare, I dont think anyone evr helped me once and on one occassion I nearly dropped ds! while struggling with a weeks shopping, pushchair etc, the bus driver just stared at me. im glad that with my younger 2 i can drive although going into town, its better to use the park and ride, but i cant face it!em is keeping us up at night with her cold, she is feeding twice in the night again, am shattered.

littledonkeyrach · 22/12/2004 10:50

Think we all have babies with colds then!!!
A friend of mine has a baby a yr older then ours, he always seems to have a cold in the winter and spring. The dr told my friend that late summer babes are more prone to them, not sure if this is a medical fact!!

So busy packing for the states, plus the usual xmas stuff!! I keep rethinking what we need to take, then think if Evie grows we'll need next size etc!!

MrsEvs · 22/12/2004 23:31

Where in the States are you going rach?

Phoebe seems really bothered by her gums at the mo, she's chewing them and holding them constantly. Keep expecting to see a little tooth there any day now - am half excited half sad that her lovely gummy smile will be gone forever!

Xmasspongecake · 23/12/2004 11:34

Harry got sent home from nursery yesterday as they called to say he had a temperature. When I turned up he was cool as a cucumber and grinned at me from ear to ear. Little faker . Had a better night last night. He was still coughing but less and only woke up to feed once - we've been having the twice a night feeding too Spacecadet, I think becasue he's been feeding less well in the day because of his cold.

I've had trouble on the buses as well. Got on one once with Harry, aged about 6 weeks, in buggy, loads of shopping under him and hanging off it. Bus driver said I had to fold it. No-one offered to help despite the fact that the two other buggies already on were lightweight ones with quite big kids in so could easily have folded theirs. I struggled with my bags for a bit whereupon the bus driver turned round and shouted "are you deaf or what" .
I now take Harry in the sling or drive where possible.

merrykittymas · 23/12/2004 15:00

thats awful sponge maybe it's a London thing and Ken reckons we should all be going by bus let him try it with a baby!

Abbie had mashed potato today she made faces at it and wasn't impressed tasted ok to me, still no teeth though!

Spacecadetiscomingtotown · 23/12/2004 17:37

What a horrific bus driver! I would have swung my shopping bags in his face! You could be right about the night feeds, Em is refusing her solids in the day so i suppose she is getting hungry in the night, hope it doesnt last much longer!

MrsEvs · 23/12/2004 21:10

DH came back from the supermarket with a chicken and rice baby jar - can I give her chicken yet? Have only really done veggies and fruit up to now along with the baby rice.

Hope all the little ones with colds are feeling better.

tangerinecath · 23/12/2004 22:19

Haven't been able to find this thread for a while! Hope all the babies recover from the sniffles in time for Christmas. It's so exciting isn't it, baby's first Christmas

My dd sat unaided for a few minutes today without wobbling at all! I am ridiculously proud. You'd think that no other baby had ever done it before!

MrsEvs, I fed her chicken yesterday for the first time after consulting with my HV, but she's now 25 weeks old (we only make it onto this thread by the skin of our teeth!)

littledonkeyrach · 24/12/2004 08:56

We are going just outside LA, so Disney is on our list!!
Had thw orst night last night, up from 12.30 - 2.30, then 5am onwards. She can hardly breathe, so horrid. Am off to drs later, dreading that she will be ill on flight.
Merry Xmas to all, and to your little ones, and a fabulous new yr.xxx

merrykittymas · 24/12/2004 11:25

hi all

Just back from supermarket the bread aisles were empty, is there a bread famine I don't know about going on? Lucky I just had to get a few bits and bobs.

I hope you all and all your little ones have a great first Christmas together. xxx

Xmasspongecake · 24/12/2004 11:57

Littledonkey, make sure you have a bottle to hand for landing as this is when it really hurts the ears if they're bunged up, but swallowing helps a lot.
We're off to my parents in a couple of hours so Merry Christmas to everyone. Hope you all have a magical time with your new little ones.
Lots of love.

Spacecadetiscomingtotown · 24/12/2004 12:58

Hi everyone am signing off for christmas now, Dh has a mad idea that he is going to Tesco this afternoon! ha!ha! rather him than me, we are just about sorted for christmas but still have quite a few pressies to wrap, eekk!!, no family over christmas, we usually go to wales to my mums but couldnt face it this year!, they are coming to us for new year and mum is doing the cooking, hooray!hope you all have a lovely first christmas with your babies.

MrsEvs · 24/12/2004 17:58

Have a wonderful Christmas everyone and a joyful 2005

Rach, I live in Washington DC and did the transatlantic thing with Phoebe when she was about 12 weeks. The bottle for landing and for take off is definately a good idea. Have been to LA/Disneyland myself, was really fun, have a great time!

Thanks for advice re chicken tangerine cath, they don't have HV's in the US which is such a shame. Phoebe is nearly 22 weeks, so I'll wait a couple of weeks and maybe give it to her then

Eshay · 25/12/2004 09:16

Happy Christmas to everyone!
