Babies born July/August 04

Hello everyone. My DS2 was born on July 4th and I have been waiting for a "Babies born in July" thread since then, but none has appeared! (at least I don't think it has). So I thought I should start one, I didn't have Mumsnet for DS1 and I wish I had. I thought it should be July/August since almost all of the July babies were/are late! How is it going for you all?

Harry had his first "solid" food today.
He's been chewing everything in sight over Christmas so I tried him on some baby rice this afternoon and he wolfed it down and wanted more. So cute the way he slurped at it .

merrykittymas · 28/12/2004 21:35

hi everyone

hope you all had good christmases with your little ones

we had a quiet but really nice day. Don't think Abbie was very impressed opening her presents she was straining to see the TV!

solids are going well, sometimes she has a couple of spoonfuls other times she wolfs the lot I think it's more about getting used to the spoon and the tastes than getting much nutrition. Have you tasted baby rice it's horrible!!

Spacecadetiscomingtotown · 28/12/2004 21:45

Baby rice tastes like wallpaper paste!!!Emily is almost over her cold now and has started eating properly again, had a scare last night when dh woke up to find em stuck on her front, with her face buried in mattress whimperimg. She had decided, finally to roll over, only she then couldnt get back and was stuck, thank god dh woke up, tonight she has been pinned in with her sheet!! but will still find it hard to sleep for worrying, none of the others used to roll over in the night, im worried she will stop breathing.

Eshay · 29/12/2004 08:53

Hi all,

DS was whimpering and on his front this morning as well. I know he can roll back though, so I'm not too worried. I think he was just a bit surprised to wake up like that or maybe he was just being lazy.
His eyes are still causing him some discomfort. He had an ointment and that seemed to help but now that it's finished his eyes are all sticky again. I'm going to have to go to the GP again to ask for something stronger. I don't like having to keep running to see the GP but I can't just leave it.
Newsflash: DS has cut his first tooth! I haven't actually seen it yet but I've sure felt it. Finally - after three months of off and on teething pain.

Xmasspongecake · 29/12/2004 11:12

Try not to worry Spacecadet. Harry wakes up on his front most mornings now and he is wimpering but only because he can't get back over so is frustrated.
Once they can roll they can also lift their heads enough to turn to the side so she's very unlikely to suffocate and the grizzling will wake you up.
Bad night with H last night. He woke at 1 for a feed which was OK but wouldn't settle in his cot so came into bed. Then woke again at 5 and wouldn't stop crying. I thought he had some wind but I couldn't get him to bring much uo and what did come up didn't settle him. Eventually resorted to a dose of Medised which did send him off but he still grizzled again hourly until 8, then fell into a deep sleep until nearly 10! Typical - only sleeps well once I'm wide awake.

merrykittymas · 29/12/2004 17:30

Abbie has shown no intention of rolling from one side or another, she moves round her mat, well her legs move her head stays where it is.

Is it a boy/girl thing cos all the boys her age are a lot nore mobile whilst the girls are happy just to lie and take it all in?

MrsEvs · 29/12/2004 21:23

Phoebe is also completely uninterested in rolling over. She managed to get onto one side a couple of times but never bothered after that. She also wriggles around the mat, but is more interested in getting up. Whenever she is on her back she just tries to lift up her head and shoulders - she gets further all the time bless her, but I don't think she realises it will be a while before she can do it! So maybe it is a girl/boy thing I don't know. I did read once that boys did tend to be quicker at the physical things and girls quicker with language and communication (which makes sense if we compare the adult versions ), but I think it's probably just an old wives tale?

She did manage to stay sitting up unaided for a good three minutes the other night, but she was still so wobbly, it made me laugh - she looked drunk! A new development is her pulling her knees under when she is on her tummy. She never really liked her tummy time before and I probably gave her less than I should have as a result, but now she seems to enjoy it a bit more and sticks her bum in the air

We had a quiet Christmas here in Washington - my first away from my family What made it worse was that all my other siblings and their 8 kids were there - I would have loved Phoebe to have her first Christmas with all her cousins. We still had a nive day though, just a bit weird IYSWIM

XmasQuackers · 30/12/2004 12:17

HI, HOPE EVERYONE HAD A GREAT FIRST XMAS WITH THEIR BABIES!!!!!
HOPE YOU;RE ALL WELL, WELCOME TO ANY NEW MUMS THAT HAVE COME TO JOIN US RECENTLY, SORRY NOT POSTED FOR A LITTLE WHILE, BEEN AWAY AND HAD REL'S OVER FOR XMAS AND STILL HERE NOW! AH WELL TODAY IS WHEN WE GET OUR HOUSE BACK!
GEORGINA DOING WELL ALTHOUGH I HAVEN;T WEIGHED HER FOR 6 WEEKS - BAD MOTHER!!!!!!
I THINK IT IS A GRIL/BOY THING. DD1 WAS ALWAYS INTERESTED IN BOOKS ETC BUT ALL THE BOYS ROUND HERE COULDN'T GIVE A MONKEY'S!!

Eshay · 30/12/2004 16:26

I think the rolling over is possibly a boy/girl thing but I should also point out that DS was born 8 July so could be almost 2 months older than some of the August babies.
This morning I felt like somewhat of a bad mum as a dad asked me how much my DS weighs. I haven't had him weighed in ages so I guessed about 8kgs. Then the dad said his boy, who was quite a bit smaller, was over 8 kgs already. Do other people still keep track of their babies' weight? And what about their exact age? I just stick to 'nearly x months' or 'x months and a bit'.

merrykittymas · 30/12/2004 17:21

I just use months now and say 5 months if she was nealry 6 I would say 6 months. Someone asked the other day if she was premature! She's not that small bless her. If anyone asks her weight I just say 14lbs odds last time she was weighed.

going to try her with a bit of avocado tonight see what she makes of it

MrsEvs · 30/12/2004 17:25

I've only had Phoebe weighed twice since we left the hospital! Once at 6 weeks and once at 2 months and I doubt she'll be weighed now again until her 6 month round of shots. I don't think it matters as long as you're not worried they're not thriving does it? You shouldn't feel in the least bit bad as far as I'm concerned Eshay, you shouldn't feel like a bad mother just because you not obsessed with statistics

As for the age, I was in weeks until about the 16 week stage but now I just think of it in months. Who can keep track!

MrsEvs · 30/12/2004 17:30

I tried avocado with banana last night kitty, she wasn't that interested, didn't turn her nose up at it just didn't seem bothered. But gave her some mango mixed in with her rice this morning and she wolfed it down

Also tried her with a cup. She was mostly interested in biting it and most of it went straight down her chin She did eventually seem to grasp that there was liquid inside but just stuck her tongue in it and tried to lap it up like a cat!

Eshay · 31/12/2004 09:14

DS is doing very well so I wasn't worried about his weight until this dad made it clear to me I was way off in my estimate.
DS drinks water from a beaker while he is in his high chair. I've tried to feed him his milk from it before but he then throws a fit and absolutely refuses to even try, as if to say: "Milk belongs in a bottle, mum!" Funny really, as he had no problem switching from breast to bottle.

merrykittymas · 31/12/2004 18:35

the avocado and banana didn't go down too well but I gave her apple, strawberry and baby rice and she wolfed that done, don't blame her about the avocado it looked yuck and didn't taste too great

Happy first new year to all the babies and their families

Eshay · 02/01/2005 21:01

Thomas hated banana too and loves everything else I've given him. I think it might be to do with the texture rather than the flavour as he loved banana flavoured porridge.
Today he cried like he's never cried before. He's got his second tooth coming through and it's causing him a lot of discomfort. We put him in his cot for a nap and he cried so much that he was shivering when I picked him up to calm him down. I felt so horrible! We gave him a bit of Calpol and fortunately that made him feel better soon.

tangerinecath · 02/01/2005 22:03

Hi everyone, Happy New Year to you all and I hope you all enjoyed Christmas with your bundles of joy! DD loved the wrapping paper best of all!

Eshay poor you having to cope with teething, dd's had a few grumpy days recently when I was wondering if that was going on but no teeth appeared and she's been back to her usual sunny self for the past couple of days.

She's eating new things like chicken and cheese now, she's loved everything we've tried her with so far. Haven't tried avocado yet though, as I can't stand it myself, but I suppose I shouldn't prejudice her! She's still bf morning and night and has formula from a bottle during the day, but she won't always take a bottle so I can't drop the morning and night feeds just yet. Sometimes she goes all day without having a drink, my HV reckons that this is OK but it seems an awful long time to me! She doesn't get cross or upset though, she just clamps her mouth shut when she's offered a bottle!

I do back to work in a week's time, she has a few taster sessions at the nursery this week. She's exactly 6 months old today, I can't believe how quickly the time's gone.

Spacecadet · 03/01/2005 23:39

Hope everyone had alovely xmas!! Emily spent all xmas showing everyone her party trick, of rolling over the second shes placed on her back, then furiously trying to move forward, so she looks like shes swimming!!!!Sshe was very uninterested in her pressies but her eyes lit up when she saw the paper!!!!unlike mercinary dd1 aged 13 who kept counting out all her xmas money and asking if she had any more pressies to come once shed unwrapped them all!!!! sigh, why cant they stay so sweet and innocent!!???

MrsEvs · 05/01/2005 15:24

Happy New Year all

Eshay hope the teething is going OK. I hate that, when they are crying, obviously in pain whether it be teeth or wind or whatever, and they look at you as if to say "why aren't you making it better" - definately tugs at the heart strings!

Are people making their own baby food, or relying on jars? I started with jars (they have a couple of really good organic brands out here that have only the fruit/veg and water - nothing added), but then decided to make up some big batches of my own stuff - she wouldn't eat it! She had wolfed down pretty much everything up til then. Anyone else had this problem. Don't know if it was the different texture or what?

Also, having eaten whatever I put in front of her to begin with, she seems to now have a real preference for fruit. I read that this could happen so held off introducing fruit until she was well used to veggies and she ate both happily for a while - but now she only wants to eat the fruit - any thoughts?

Sponge · 05/01/2005 18:04

Mrs Evs it's very common for babies to reject homemade food at first if they've started on jars as the texture of jars is so much smoother. Try to make your own as smooth as possible or add a bit of baby rice to make it gloopier and persevere.
You could try mixing fruit and veg together - apple and carrot or something - to try and get her taste buds back towards the veggie end of things. I wouldn't worry too much though. Fruit is still good for them.

Spacecadet · 05/01/2005 18:17

Emily will only eat fruit at the mo

MrsEvs · 05/01/2005 18:21

Thanks Sponge, I was thinking that I would try and make the next batch a bit more watery, and will defo try the fruit and veg mixed - good idea

littlepik · 06/01/2005 17:45

My dd is coming up to 6 months and i've been breastfeeding her up until now, she still sleeps thru the night for about 8 hours, but should I start trying to wean her now ?......if so ...any tips on whats best to start her off on ???

Spacecadet · 06/01/2005 21:39

anyone got any ideas?? em will not touch anything but fruit, but she has stopped sleeping through and the health visitor says its cos shes not getting a balanced diet. She said she must have more veg and meat, protein, so tried her this evening on chicken anad veg and she screamed the house down and refused it, feel awful, she will wake again tonite cos shes hungry, but what can i do, you would have thought I was feeding her poison!! the way she gagged and screamed at me.

MrsEvs · 07/01/2005 00:22

I defo think it's texture with Phoebe and have found some of the thicker ones that she refused she will take if I water them down a bit first, so maybe try that, or try disguising new things in some baby rice, mix in some of the veg bbut some of a fruit one too, so she thinks she's still getting the fruit. That's what has worked with Phoebe the last couple of days.

Littlepik - if she seems interested in food maybe try her with a bit of baby rice 1st, mixed with plenty of breastmilk or formula, I think that's how most people start out.

littlepik · 07/01/2005 09:44

thanks, think i will try today, i'm going spare, she's suddenly gone from being a really placid baby, to one thats really wingey, she won't stop until shes picked up, any ideas what it might be ?
