Babies born July/August 04

Hello everyone. My DS2 was born on July 4th and I have been waiting for a "Babies born in July" thread since then, but none has appeared! (at least I don't think it has). So I thought I should start one, I didn't have Mumsnet for DS1 and I wish I had. I thought it should be July/August since almost all of the July babies were/are late! How is it going for you all?

I know what you mean kitty about the weaning confusion, I had to start DS on baby rice at 14-15 weeks because I couldn't fill him. He would have 9oz of SMA white then breast milk straight after!!! Plus he was watching everything we ate, and woke in the night when he had slept through for 3 weeks, so I took the plunge.
I didn't start fruit and veg until he was 18 weeks and now he has tried quite a variety and has yet to find something he doesn't like.
I am still so confused about how fast to go, what he can have and when, and how much to give. My mum wants him to have a turkey dinner on Xmas day!!!
DS has 3 meals a day and eats loads, but he is the size of a 9 month old.
I think the best thing to do is look for signs from your baby and take it steady if you are weaning before 6 months. Apparently I wasn't weaned until I was 8 months old.
But I have found that each book/article on weaning says a different thing, and I have decided not to worry too much but avoid gluten until he is 6 months old.

Aah, I wondered where this thread had gone. Confusing us with new topic headings.
I wasn't going to even think about weaning until ds was 6 months but I confess I am now considering doing it earlier.
He doesn't drink a great deal of milk - still only 5oz bottles and often doesn't finish them - but he does show an interest in our food and he has started waking up in the night again when he was sleeping through so I'm wondering if a bit of baby rice would fill him up better.
He's only 18 weeks though so I'm not going for it just yet.

littlerach · 07/12/2004 13:09

Sponge, that was my reason for starting early. DD2 only took 4oz most of the time, and was not consistent on the centiles. She now has baby rice and fruit and veg and even drinks more milk!! She follows the curve now, and is much happier in herself - such a relief!

SpringCrimboTurkey · 07/12/2004 13:17

My HV advised weaning before 6 months was OK iof that is what suits yoyr baby - however, not to do it before 16 weeks as their digestive systems cant take it.

Evie is now on 3 meals a day along with 4 9oz bottles and she's still hungry - not sure wot else to try?

Quacks - that sounds great - i wish i could stay off work longer but what with moving we just cannot afford it now ( mortgage twice as big).
Going back 6th Jan 2.5 days a week.

Hope yor trip goes well littlerach - America sounds lovely this time of year :)

littledonkeyrach · 07/12/2004 13:25

Apparently they have had rain and ice - great - repacking now!!!

merrykittymas · 07/12/2004 15:14

took me ages to find the thread again

Abbie has her first cold :( she's all sniffly and coughing bless her. I've given her some Calpol which she loves(!)

20 weeks today still umming and aahhing about the weaning situation. Think I am going to wait another 2 weeks then she will be 5 months and take it slowly with one meal a day. She's started wakening in the night for a feed around 4ish but it's not a hassle as she has a feed and goes straight back to sleep (the joys of breastfeeding I don't think I ever fully wake up) but she has also started fussing during feeding in the day and biting my nipples and it hurts :(

sleepytinkerbell · 07/12/2004 18:48

hi all, sorry to jump in for some advice but i need your help ladies please. Ds is 16 weeks and still nowhere near sleeping through the night. I gave him half a cup of baby rice today at 11.30am and cant for the life of me remember how often he is supposed to have meals, anyone got a schedule to help me out? Thanks

merrykittymas · 07/12/2004 20:17

Annabel Karmel's advice goes like this:

Start off with one meal a day (baby rice veg etc) do this for 2 weeks then increase to 2 meals a day for 2 weeks then 3 meals a day from there on in. Don't think it matters which meals you start with ie breakfast, lunch.

nicnee · 07/12/2004 20:56

I started DS on 1 meal a day (lunch) for 1 week, then introduced tea the next week, but held off on breakfast for a few weeks, only because DS was only 15 weeks when I started (on HV advice) and he seemed satisfied on 2 meals a day for a while. He now has 3 meals a day, but obly has a small breakfast, and has only just started to cut down a little on his milk after 6 weeks of weaning.

moondog · 07/12/2004 21:00

My 22 week old has still had nothing but breastmilk. Anyone else holding off?
(I was planning to stay off solids until 6 months anyway, but what clinched it for me was someone on a thread here saying how by holding off, she had avoided all of that boring food preparation and feeding of tiny amounts of puree.
Admittedly it is fun first time around but these days, I have more than enough to do!)

MarmaladeSun · 07/12/2004 21:35

Hi all. I'd have loved to have held off solids until 6 months, but gave in and started DD on them last week, at 20 weeks. She's a big baby, weighing 9lb 6oz at birth and at last weigh in, a couple of weeks ago she was 16lb 11oz. She went from being an OK sleeper, waking once or twice a night, to a complete nightmare...the longest she would sleep was 2 hours in one go, the usual being 15 mins to 30 mins! Anyway, I started her on one meal a day, baby rice, at tea time and have just started introducing lunch as well. Was planning on just a spoonful but she guzzles it and screams at me if I take more than a nano second to refill the spoon! I feel incredibly guilty weaning her before 6 months however, but I guess I did ok getting to 5 months given her size and appetite. Am still breastfeeding tho, so am pleased about that. She's an absolute joy; and makes me melt when she giggles and chuckles. The most beautiful sound in the world Grin

sleepytinkerbell · 07/12/2004 22:04

thanks for the advice ladies, its amazing how i have absolutely zero memory of what the hell i did 4.5 years ago!!! So i guess i will stay with the lunch meal for the moment any other advice gratefully accepted Smile

moondog · 07/12/2004 22:08

I think I may do the same Marmaladesun. I've got a big fella-not sure how much he weighs now but 2 months ago he was 14lb 10oz.
Sleeps great from 6-12 pm but then waking every couple of hours for a feed and I am worn out.

littledonkeyrach · 08/12/2004 09:37

Last lot of jabs today - and she has a cold - poor thing. Can hardly suck her bottle.

I know what you mean, marmaladesun, she almost pants when she sees the spoon!! And scoffs huge amounts at a time!

What happened to Toothache, or has she changed her name?

DingDongDinosaurOnHigh · 08/12/2004 09:46

hello all - yes, still holding off weaning here too - although blake is an awful sleeper!

merrykittymas · 08/12/2004 10:45

I'm glad I'm not the only one holding off, feel like a bit of an oddity. Have bought a blender and her weaning spoons!

Her colds a bit better today :)

I think toothache hasn't got internet access at home:( shame would love to know how shes getting on

DingDongDinosaurOnHigh · 08/12/2004 13:37

sweetkitty have you given any formula yet, or are you still exclusively breastfeeding? I keep NEARLY giving DS3 formula and then deciding not to at the last minute. However am off to get hair cut and coloured on Friday morning - will be gone for quite a while and not sure I can express enough milk for himself!

moondog · 08/12/2004 13:49

Crikey! Just tried ds with a 1/2 banana (first food ever) in desperation as he has done nothing but whinge for several days, wakes all night and never sleeps in the day! Anyway, he gulped it down, followed by a quick b/feed and is now sleeping (he never sleeps in the day!!!)
To make it even better, dd (who only operates in 5th gear) is also sleeping.
Just sitting here enjoying the peace!
Might be a coincidence, but maybe he WAS ready for some food despite me wanting to hold out for 3 more weeks?

nicnee · 08/12/2004 17:17

Just been reading all the weaning dilemmas about when to start and trying to hold out until 6 months and a pearl of wisdom from my mum came to mind. She used to be a midwife and told many of the mums when their baby wasn't following the recommendations - 'your baby doesn't read the book'.
I wanted to follow government guidelines with DS but at 15 weeks I could not fill him as he was the size of a 6 month old at the time. I have not felt guilty in the slightest as he has gobbled everything he has been offered, so he was definately ready.
So basically, I wanted to advise - follow your baby, not the books.

littledonkeyrach · 09/12/2004 09:36

very true!

Well, Evie is now satisfying the HV as her weight has stabilised . Was quite concerned as we saw GP yesterday before the jabs and saw a note beside our name which said "failure to thrive????? Please check." I guess this is because her weight kept going down on the centiles. The GP took one look at her and said she was fine - as we thought!!

Any tips for snotty babies? She slept poorly last night as she is so bunged up.

sponge · 09/12/2004 10:07

Harry's all snotty and coughing quite a bit now too, poor little mite. This is what happens when they start nursery and start to mix with other kids and all their germs. It puts him off his feeds a bit as he can't breathe and drink at the same time Sad.
Plus he threw up his entire morning feed this morning. He's always a bit pukey but has never done the Exorcist projectile thing before.
I hope he gets better quickly as I hate seeing him poorly and it makes me feel worse about leaving him at nursery.
Having said that it's almost worth it for the huge grins and giggles I get when I pick him up. He looks so pleased to see me Smile.

merrykittymas · 09/12/2004 10:58

hi all

Abbie still has her cold she's all snuffly as well :( she likes the calpol as well

Having my first night out since she was born tonight so will be leaving DP with a load of EBM.

sponge · 09/12/2004 11:55

Harry doens't like Calpol Shock.
He splutters and spits it out, although the bit that does go down has the desired effect.
Odd because dd loves the stuff and always did.

MarmaladeSun · 09/12/2004 13:21

For all the poor loves with colds, have you tried the dummies designed for 'bunged up' babies? I got mine in Tesco, and the bit opposite the teat opens and you put a drop of infant olbas oil on a ball of cotton wool, put that in the open bit and then close it. As babe sucks the dummy the olbas oil is inhaled through his nose. Worth a try.

XmasQuackers · 09/12/2004 20:24

Littlerach, this is my first time. The manager has assured me I only need do 1 shift per month if that's what suits. I'll give it a go!
Sring chick, glad you got PT!! Good for you. I'd go back too if I could get decent childcare!
