Babies born July/August 04

Hello everyone. My DS2 was born on July 4th and I have been waiting for a "Babies born in July" thread since then, but none has appeared! (at least I don't think it has). So I thought I should start one, I didn't have Mumsnet for DS1 and I wish I had. I thought it should be July/August since almost all of the July babies were/are late! How is it going for you all?

littlerach, do you think it might be reflux? No experience myself, but have heard of other people taking their babies to a cranial osteopath for treatment - might be worth considering?

My DS3 is often like this in the mornings, but as the day wears on he seems to settle and feed more smoothly. No idea why.

Really impressed at those of you who can express 10 ounces!! Blimey! I've never ever ever been able to express more than 5 at most!

Sponge - yes - DS1 who did have some formula had already developed eczema by this age. DS2 didn't have any until six months, and has always been largely eczema free, although he did get very rashy under his plaster casts, but I think that was just heat and sweat rather than atopic eczema. DS1 is eczema-free now, but was rather bad for a while, so I don't really want a repeat performance...

littlerach · 15/11/2004 18:40

Yes, thought it might be that, gaviscon has made no difference.
We had a visit from HV today, to check her weight. She has dropped again on the chart, to the 12th centile. If she continues to drop they have to refer us to paeds, so I have been told to wean her onto solids. She has taken baby rice well, HV advised jars of baby rice pud and creamy breakfast, as well as fruit and veg. We will have a review in 2 wks, unless I am worried before then. She is absolutely fine in every other way, she olds her head up, kicks well, lifts head from floor, grabs at things etc. So I guess it is just that she is going to be tiny. My mum and sister are both very slim, and we are all short, so I guess that is how she will be.

SpringChicken · 16/11/2004 09:40

Hiya everyone, sorry haven't been about lately, been extremely busy what with DD, new puppy, work and DP's 21st birthday!

Weaning going well - Evie has ben on baby rice for 5 days now - i decided to give it to her with her night time bottle to try and get her to sleep through and it seems to be working a treat. i am going to wait until Thursday and then introduce something new. i tried her on banana yesterday, which she ate but didn't seem to keen on - maybe because it's such a different taste.

Evie rolled over for the first time this morning - I woke up at 4.30 to check on her as i could hear her fidgiting and she was right up on her side, i sat and watched her for a few minutes and she rolled all the way over onto her front i even woke DP up to tell him, he wasn't best pleased! .

Bit of a personal question but how are everyones periods going?
I am getting a bit worried - had first af when Evie was 6 weeks old, which lasted a week - then had another 28 days later which lasted a week - since then DP and i have continued with our usual nighttime activities (more than usual, strangely enough) and i haven't had a period since.
After the first time we managed the full deed i bleed for a week afterwards but i had only finished my period about 3 days earlier.

Am really really confused now - i done a test about 2 weeks ago and it was negative but have still had no signs whatsoever - I'm not breastfeeding so this doesn't come into account but i am on the mini pill - Any Idea's?

dinosaur · 16/11/2004 10:08

Hermykne - yes mine does sound like yours! Mine has a big feed sometime between midnight and 2 a.m. and then another between 5 and 6 a.m. and then never wants to feed in the morning - I haven't fed him yet this morning as he is just not hungry yet! I would really like him to drop one of these feeds and after Christmas am going to start doing some of the things in the NO Cry Sleep Solution book - otherwise I will never survive going back to work in February!

littlerach - your dd sounds lovely!

SpringChicken - sorry can't help, am bf-ing and not having periods yet. (Not having any night-time activities either, much to DH's disappointment )

sweetkitty · 16/11/2004 10:44

hi all

Abbie 17 weeks now and doing well, it's so funny when you leave them in one place go away for 5 mins and they've wriggled to another. Her favourite is moving round on her legs but her head stays in the same position! She likes being on her side a lot now has only rolled over once think it shocked her as she started crying.

Yesterday she only had 40 mins sleep all day she wasn't grumpy just laughed and giggled under her playgym even at 11pm last night. She never stops "talking" either don't know who she's inherited that from

I've had one period since she was born was waiting for another this month but nothing I'm def not PG though, think they are erratic cos of the BF. I think it takes your body a while to readjust after having a baby even if you're not BF.

HelloMama · 16/11/2004 10:51

springchicken, probably the reason why your periods have stopped is because of the mini-pill. As long as you have been taking it correctly, there is no need to worry about pregnancy. It is normal to have erratic light bleeding or no bleeding at all whilst taking it.

I haven't had any periods yet! No bleeding or anything. I keep getting signs that one is on its way, ie spots, PMT etc, but then nothing! I too did a test but it was negative, although I crapped myself whilst waiting for the result. DH was disappointed as he would love another one already. I think he is mad!

MrsEvs · 21/11/2004 07:15

Hello all, been moving house and didn't have internet access for a while. I too have started dd on solids. Just done 3 days of baby rice so far - but she loves it! Opens her mouth wide for the spoon, tries to grab it herself, laughs when she swallows some - it's so sweet :0

I'm out in the US and my doctor advised introducing the solids at 16 weeks, although she is a big baby. I really don't think you can put a set time on in though, dd is my 1st but my sisters said it was different for all of theirs, some were ready at 4 months some at 6 (they have 8 between them!). DD was staring at anything I put in my mouth, trying to take more milk than she could hold cos she was still hungry, so I thought she was well ready. And considering I was expecting to get 2-3 spoons into her the first time and she had about 25, I think I was right!!

Is everyone else just so besotted with their babies at the moment?! The proper giggles and gummy smiles - she's just so gorgeous, I can't beleive how gooey I get over her - so wasn't like that before motherhood!

Marmalade, I read your post about not wanting the teeth to come through and laughed, I had just said that to my dh, that I would really miss that big gummy smile when it was gone

MrsEvs · 21/11/2004 07:21

Forgot to say, I am currently having my 2nd period since the baby was born - were only 3 weeks apart Was gutted as although I haven't been bf in the traditional sense, I have been expressing and feeding dh exclusively breastmilk up to now, wasn't expecting to have a period for ages!

A bit disgusting , so if it's too much info I apologise, but has anyone else's first periods been quite clotty?

Eshay · 21/11/2004 09:17

No periods here yet although my hair is falling out like mad!

littlerach · 21/11/2004 10:40

my hair is falling out soooo much!!

I had my first night out last night, with some other mums, and had a brill time, although we all talked about the little ones all night!!

The weaning is going ok, she is taking a few spoonfuls twice a day, mainly of babyrice.

SpringChicken · 21/11/2004 12:32

Well my HV actually OK'd the weaning and gave me loads of helpful hints and tips.
Evie now has baby rice and a bottle for her breakfast - 2 more bottles during the day and then potatos and veg for dinner and another bottle.

She absolutely loves it - she is such a good eater - i make more of a mess and spread it over her face when i'm trying to scoop with the spoon lol

MrsEvs · 21/11/2004 16:38

That's mad, my hair is faling out loads too! I've got really fine hair as it is, but when I was pregnant it was much fuller and thicker (got to be some bonuses right?) and none fell out - I guess I just thought this recent shedding was a return to form, but interesting to see it's happening to others as well.

Eshay · 22/11/2004 08:49

Yes, it is very common after childbirth so I was expecting it to happen. Still, I can't get over how much hair is in my brush and everywhere it shouldn't be. I have actually decided to chop my hair off on Friday because I am sick of it being in the way. For me this is almost a more difficult decision than deciding to try for a baby!

SpringChicken · 22/11/2004 10:07

Need Help! DD has just learnt how to roll over - she has been able to get up on her side for ages but has in the last week leanrt how to get all the way over onto her front.

Am panicking now about when she is asleep at night time - is there anyway i can stop her rolling over or should i just let her do it? ?

littlerach · 22/11/2004 17:14

Just let her do it!! If she is strong enough to do it, she will be fine. I don't think yo could stop her really!! DD1 slept on her front most of the time when she learnt to do it.

sponge · 22/11/2004 18:22

Yes, once they can roll then there's not much you can do although you'll probably find she won't do it in the night for a while.
No period for me yet either although I've stopped bf now as going back to work next week. I can't believe Harry is starting nursery in just over a week. He still seems so small .
He's doing pretty well although puking a bit of every feed and dribbling quite a bit so he's constantly damp round his neck and arms and I've mostly got a smear of sick down one arm - nice.
He doesn't eat all that much. Still only on 5oz bottles at 15.5 weeks, 6 times a day. Doesn't always finish them although occasionally will want a bit more. He's still using number 2 teats. I tried him on 3s but it seemed to upset him and he hardly fed at all so I went back. If it ain't broke .
He was sleeping through the night pretty well, until at least 6am but for the past 4 or 5 days he's taken to waking up earlier again - between 4 and 5 - for a feed, and he's definitely hungry as it all goes down and quite fast.

sweetkitty · 22/11/2004 21:18

hi all

SC I think once they're strong enough to roll over the risks with sleeping on their front are reduced (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Well we have made the decision that I'm not going back to work at the end of January (when my 6 months are up) we are relocating back to our native Scotland. DP is looking for a job up there just now and our flat is on the market. It's something we always wanted to do long term so we thought "why not now" means I will give up my job but the company were looking shaky anyway. I'm applying for teacher training for next August.

It's going to be so stressful but hopefully (fingers crossed) it will all work out.

Abbie's fine 18 weeks old tomorrow!! Still fully breastfeeding her think I'll wait another 4 weeks see how she is before starting with the baby rice.

milklady · 23/11/2004 01:00

I'm rubbish at this - my last (and first) post was a nearly a month ago.... and he has yet to sleep throught the night (although has been asleep for the last 6 hours so can't complain!)

Mrs Evs - thanks for replying to my question - I am finding that I am having to express during the day now as DS is so distracted that he will barely go to the breast, but he can still look around and fidget with a bottle in his mouth. Because he's just been snacking during the day, he's gone from gaining 6-8oz/week to just 3oz/wk in the last month or so. How many times a day do you feed expressed milk and how much per feed? I'm feeling very inadequate reading about 10oz from one boob expressers! I did that once but I looked like Pammy and it was brick hard - not nice!

I was just melting reading everyone's comments about those gummy smiles. They are just the best thing. DS has swopped his cute googoos for lots of squeals and squawks (he sounds like cats at it!!), but still gorgeous. No giggles yet, but I think they're coming soon.

Problem I'm having is that DS (15 weeks) is VERY attached to me. My MIL (who he only sees about every 3 weeks) is frightened to take him in case he cries. Worse still if I pop out for a couple of hours after DP gets home from work, while DS is still awake, he always cries and then stops when I get home and take him. People keep saying he's spoiled (grrrr) but I don't know how to fix this as he is obviously with me all day every day but poor DP must feel very unloved.

MrsEvs · 23/11/2004 06:25

milklady, I had to express every feed, and built this up gradually, at first only used to be able to do 4oz or so, but the supply and demand thing works with the pump too, so as she wanted more, I built it up to 6-8oz with one 10oz first thing in the morning. She has 5 feeds a day now at 17 weeks she takes 6-7oz per feed.

I have introduced solids now though, only replacing 1 feed a day at the moment (sweet potatoes today and she loved it!), perhaps if your little one seems less interested in the milk you could try with a bit of baby rice? I might be wrong but I think the weight gain does start to slow down a bit the closer they get to 6 months so I wouldn't worry, but someone correct me if I'm wrong?

I have started this week to cut down on the pumping and replaced it with some formula feeds. Feel bad about it but dd doesn't seem remotely bothered and the pumping was getting to be such a hassle and now she is awake most of the day it was getting hard to find the time. She's 4 months so I gave her a good start at least.

Sweetkitty, hope your move goes well, as someone who relocated with a 6 week old I can sympathise Fingers crossed your dh finds something soon.

Sponge, feel so sorry for you going back to work, think I would be heartbroken My friend just went back last week and said she cried all the way there. Hope it goes OK for you. By all accounts it's only you that's bothered the little ones don't seem to mind (although may pretend to just to make you feel bad! My friend said that at the nursey they said her ds was happy as larry all day, playing with toys, laughing away etc, but when he saw her he started crying as if to make out he'd been doing it all day - amazing that manipulation is already built in so early!) Good luck anyway

I can sympathise with the puke too - dd is still very pukey and dribbly. She threw up on dh the other evening and he had to change his shirt, gave it to me to smell and I couldn't smell anything (he thought it was horrible!), realised that I must be so used to being covered in vom all day every day that I am immune . Hope I haven't been out and about stinking to high heaven without knowing about it {blush}

sweetkitty · 23/11/2004 12:52

I haven't expressed for ages will have to start again as I've got a few nights/days out coming up and will need to build up a supply. I hope she hasn't lost the know to suck from a bottle. Sometimes I get about 6ozs other times 4ozs.

MrsEvs you have done so well to put up with pumping for so long, it's such a hassle all that sterilising.

Abbie got weighed this morning 13lbs 4 and a half ozs so about 5-6ozs weight gain in a fortnight. I've also heard weight gain starts to slow down after 3 months. I'm not getting stressed about it every baby is different, they'll be what they'll be.

Eshay · 23/11/2004 12:56

SpringChicken - about rolling over. DS has recently mastered rolling on to his tummy as well and does not know how to roll back but at night he stays on his back. Also (just because I know I would worry too much otherwise) I have been playing peekaboo with him where I put a muslin on his face and he now grabs it and moves it. This way I am not so worried about DS rolling over and grabbing something and cover his face with it. I know he will be okay.

Milklady - I'm sorry if I made you feel inadequate when I said I get 10 oz from one boob. It's true but the other boob doesn't 'work' half as well so they're quite uneven at times. Not a great look and not nice to have to carry around either. In fact, I'm so sick of expressing all that milk that I'm now trying to slow down milk production on my good side and give DS more formula and solids.

milklady · 23/11/2004 14:52

I agree with Sweetkitty - well done MrsEvs re all that sterlising for pumping. It is such a pain. I've even thought about putting the pump in the fridge for the next time !

Eshay - sorry, don't feel inadequate, just jealous! I know what you mean re getting much more out of one boob. I'm very lopsided with a big left one and nothing has changed it.

tangerinecath · 27/11/2004 22:20

Interesting to read everyone's different experiences with expressing, I can get gallons out of one boob but hardly anything out of the other, funnily enough the "less productive" one is the one that dd seems to prefer! She STILL won't drink from a bottle though, but we've managed to get some down her using a cup with a spout.
We had our first giggle this week dh was pulling faces at her and she just couldn't stop - it was really infectious and soon all three of us were laughing like looneys
Weaning is going well, she loves everything we've tried so far, although parsnip took a couple of attempts before she decided she liked it. A word of warning ladies... anything with carrot in it stains plastic and clothing.

dinosaur · 29/11/2004 14:16

Hi everyone, sorry to have been away for a while.

Sponge, I can't believe you're going back to work already - is that choice or necessity (gosh, I am nosey!)?

sweetkitty - exciting news!

Not much to report about Blake. Still hemming and hawing about formula (he hasn't had any yet). He is not very well at the moment, he's had a bad cold which has gone to his chest and he doesn't seem to be shaking it off so we're off to the doctor this afternoon. Apart from that he's fine, can't roll over yet but tries very hard, giggles when I tickle him, smiles at his brothers, still wakes me up lots in the night , and has discovered his toes now, so spends lots of time playing with them. Very sweet.

My hair's falling out too, although not the grey ones, sadly.
