Babies born July/August 04

Hello everyone. My DS2 was born on July 4th and I have been waiting for a "Babies born in July" thread since then, but none has appeared! (at least I don't think it has). So I thought I should start one, I didn't have Mumsnet for DS1 and I wish I had. I thought it should be July/August since almost all of the July babies were/are late! How is it going for you all?

My baby slept for 12 hours last night

She went down at 9 had dreamfeed at 1 and 7 and got up at 9!!! Oh if only it was all the time I could cope with that very nicely.

sleeplessmumof2 · 03/11/2004 16:41

well done sweetkitty, bet you feel better for the rest

Eshay · 04/11/2004 15:55

I am glad you had a good night's rest, Sweetkitty. Night like that are great, aren't they? Of course I find myself waking up all the time because I'm worried if ds doesn't wake me up.
I've had to put Calgel on ds for the past 4 nights and he's slept through the night all of those nights! Not even wanting a feed! Has anyone else experienced this? It seems to be too much of a coincidence!

tangerinecath · 05/11/2004 22:33

Hi all,
dd is now 18 weeks (can't believe it really - it's gone so fast!)
I'm thinking of starting weaning her soon - she seems really interested in food and her feeds can go on for 1 1/2 hours sometimes so I think she needs some solids. She's not waking at night though.
Is anyone else weaning / thinking about it yet?

sponge · 06/11/2004 10:49

Harry is 3 months now and seems to have decided to sleep through the night. For the past 5 nights he's gone from at least 10pm-6am and 3 times through to 7am . I don't count my chickens that that's it but it's very nice.
Tangerinecath, I know current guidelines are not to weantill 6 months but it used to be from4 months so most of us weaned our firstborns at between 4and 5 months with no ill effects. I think you have to judge your own child and see if they seem ready. If you try and she doesn't take it then leave it for another couple of weeks and retry.
Eshay Calpol knocks them out really well at this age so I imagine Calgel will too. Sadly it stops being so effective when they get older .

Morning All,

Evie has just had her 2nd lot of injections - she was doing so well with the first one, she just looked at me as if to say "Mum, why is this strange lady poking things into my leg" but the second one she screamed her little heart out (Bless)!!

She has started waking up in the night now - bit hard to get used to when she has been sleeping for nearly 12 hours for the last 10 weeks or so.
She is having 4 9oz bottles throughout the course of the day, having her last at around 7.30 then off to sleep by 8, usually wakes up between 7-8 but not recently!

I don't think she is eating enough in the day, i have tried to cram another bottle in throughout the course of the day but she i only interested in it every 3 hours.
Have now been out and bought her some rusks and baby rice - i know the current guidelines say 6 months but have the actually given a valid reason for changing it??
As Evie is our first, i have no past experience of this but DP and i have decided that we will do it when we feel it is right (like now)! Plus, all the packaging on these products still say 4 months - surely this should've been changed if it had been changed to 6 months!

littlerach · 08/11/2004 14:14

I weaned DD1 at 16 wks, it made it all much easier. I always think that it is when you feel they are ready. I am planning on doing this one at that age, we have no severe allergies or medical reasons for not doing it.
We are having feeding probs again, she is only taking 3-4 oz per feed, then screaming, then is hungry again soon afetr. Back on the gaviscon, I feel. Another reason to wean!!
She is still sleeping until about 5-6am, though often fidgets for an hr before she wakes up.
Has anyone else put them in their own room yet?

SpringChicken · 08/11/2004 14:20

No way - DP wont let her in her own room and tbh, i wouldn't feel too great about it!
We are moving in the next month or so, so hopefully she will go straight into her own room at the new house.
I need help and advice with weaning - what do i do, should i just introduce rusks with a morning bottle for the time being - when do i up what i give her?

sponge · 08/11/2004 15:08

Springchicken, start with baby rice. You'll only need one or two teaspoons to start with, made up to quite a runny consistency with her formula. If she takes it carry on, if not wait a couple of weeks and try again.
Give at one daytime mealtime, not first thing and not when she's really hungry so probably give some of her bottle first. Do this for the first week. Then introduce 'solids' at the morning feed and start to introduce fruit and veg. Things like apple, pear, carrot, swede, butternut squash and banana - fruit and naturally sweet veg go down best at first. Everything except banana should be peeled and cooked, no salt, and everything should be pureed to a total mush. Introduce things one at a time to check what she likes and make sure there are no adverse reactions to anything. Once you've got a few things established you can start mixing them up a bit. Keep to two feeds with solids per day for the first 4 weeks then introduce a third. Probably worth investing in a book on weaning/ toddler feeding as it will give you good ideas.
If you find things she likes make up a quantity and freeze in ice cube trays. You can then defrost one or two cubes for each meal - that's all she'll need.
Good luck.

sweetkitty · 08/11/2004 16:04

I'm going to hold off weaning for a bit yet. She's still quite happy with just breastmilk and she was 2 and a bit weeks early as well. Might try her around Christmas time but I'm not going to force it. She's only ickle compared to the big lads on here.

Her sleeps still all over the place but she's well settled into the 12-7am stretch so shouldn't complain. She's really into the TV now this morning we were playing with Tigger etc under her playgym and she's staring at the adverts!!!

Last lot of injections tomorrow always try and give her a BF straight after seems to comfort her.

SpringChicken · 08/11/2004 16:22

Thanks Sponge - That is really really helpful. I am completely useless with this.

Will defo get a book

Quackers · 08/11/2004 21:18

Hi SP!! Yes baby rice is best, try and hold off on ruskd, even the low sugar ones are very sweet. I spend an evening cooking and pureeing a load of carrots, pears apples pots etcc and freezing into ice cube trays then bung in microwave when needed. Dead easy and better and cheaper than jars. Will do for DD2 maybe this week. A book is a good idea for ideas and timings. A teaspoon of babyrice at the mid am or afternoon feed and build on that, introduce a new taste every 3 days. I think you're right to do it when you feel right. I think this 6 month thing is ridiculous!
Georgina is now 11 lb 11 ounces, but I do feel she's ready, waking earlier agian etc.. but I will have to hold off another 2 weeks at least as she's only 14 weeks.
She has been in her own room now for the last 3 weeks and it has been brill for her and us. I use the monitor, but she loves her cot and has a nice night time mobile for bedtime so she knows it's time for sleep.

tangerinecath · 08/11/2004 21:56

Glad to see that it's not just me that can't wait until 6 months for weaning! I've been giving dd (18.5 weeks and about 16lb) baby rice for the past couple of days, twice a day in addition to her usual feeds, and she seems to really enjoy it. Her feeds were going on for 1.5 to 2 hours sometimes (4 feeds a day plus a couple of top ups) so the amount of time I was spending with a baby attached to me was getting ridiculous. She still won't take a bottle though but if I use a spout instead of a teat I can "tip" the ebm into her mouth and some of it goes down! About 50% in her and 50% down her front I reckon! Still it's progress though, I'm sure she'll get the hang of it eventually.

She's been in her own room since she was about 4 weeks, I snore like a freight train and so does she and we kept waking each other up . It was heartbreaking the first night I left her (I have a cat so I have to keep her bedroom door shut) but the baby monitor is so sensitive that I can hear every sigh and murmur, so I've got used to it now.

Eshay · 09/11/2004 16:54

No, it's definitely not just you. My DS is 4 months now and I've started him on baby rice too. He quite likes it although I'm not sure how much of it actually goes down. I've been waiting to start for quite some time now as he is always very hungry and feeds very frequently. I heard some mothers say that they are not looking forward to it as it means the end to the closeness of breastfeeding but I don't feel that way - it will be a long time before he doesn't get anymore breastmilk at all.
Also, he's been sleeping in his own room for over a month now as he was getting too big for his moses basket and, more importantly, all his little noises kept me awake. His room is right across the hall from our room so I still wake up as soon as there is 'a more serious' noise, like 'feed me'. He sleeps in a sleeping bag so I don't have the worry of him crawling under the covers (anymore). They're great!

dinosaur · 09/11/2004 17:15

Hello everybody, sorry haven't been around much but always v busy...

Happily DS3 is sleeping a bit better again - he's been going down at about 7.30 p.m. and sleeping about 11 or 12 hours with just two wake-ups at about 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. Although he is big, I feel he's quite contented with milk at the moment, so am in no hurry to rush weaning. Both DS1 and DS2 started a little bit of solids at four months, but it made DS1 very windy and he hadh a lot of pains in his tummy, and it just made DS2 very fat! So I think I will hold off for a good while yet. Weaning is such a pain in the b**t as well, all that pureeing and shovelling in spoonfuls of food and wiping mess off...everything...yikes!

My big dilemma is whether to let DS3 have some formula...really terrified of him getting eczema, but can't really express enough for a decent feed for him any more...tricky.

sweetkitty · 09/11/2004 17:37

hey all

Abbie had her last set of injections today felt horrible again. I've given her some paracetamol just in case and she's been asleep most of the afternoon.

She's 12lb 13ozs now, still too small for her 3-6 month clothes despite the fact she's 16 weeks today! She's still bang on the 25th centile think she's decided to follow it all the way up. At least her 0-3 month clothes have lasted her a while and she'll get longer out the 3-6 month ones.

As I said earlier she's still going through the night and not "looking" for anymore food so I'm holding off the weaning for a bit no rush.

Dino - I can't get anything like want I used to from a good express unless it's first thing in the morning and I'm about to explode. I think DD is draining me dry I'm always so thirsty as well.

dinosaur · 09/11/2004 17:42

Sweetkitty - I know! I wake up in the mornings with my tongue glued to the roof of my mouth, absolutely parched!

sponge · 10/11/2004 18:08

Dino did your other ds's get eczema.
My dd did have it but no sign of it in ds despite the fact that he's always had some formula and is now all bottles.
I'm sure some breastfeeding helps keep it away and of course some bf babies still get it so there are no guarantees either way.
If introducing some formula would help you I'm sure it can't do too much harm to a largely bf baby.

Quackers · 10/11/2004 20:29

Hi, Dino how you finding having 3???????
Just sort of contemplating the idea [wink}

Quackers · 10/11/2004 20:30
Wink
bunny2 · 10/11/2004 20:57

Hi Quacks. thanks for your message . I am getting so impatient now, the last 2 weeks are really going to drag! How is the lovely Georgina getting on?

littlerach · 11/11/2004 10:08

Having really crap time with feeding now, have tried gaviscon, no change. I have even tried different teats to see if that made a difference. She seems to take 2-3 oz then screams. Not windy, she's fine if you stop feeding, and sometimes takes more 1/2 hr or so later. I am presuming that if she was hungry she would take it all, but it is getting me down now. I am starting to dread feeding her. Any ideas....?

MarmaladeSun · 11/11/2004 10:52

Hello everyone. Well after having a really nightmarish few weeks with no sleep. DD2 has finally found herself a pattern . She doesn't go through the night yet, but will sleep from 7pm until about 1, then feed and then sleep til about 5 and then doze on and off til 7 when we get up. Having had one night when the longest stretch of sleep I had was 8 minutes, it's just blissful now! Still exclusively bf, and had her weighed on Monday at 16 weeks. She's gone from 9lb 6oz at birth, to 16lb 11oz...the HV said I must have double jersey milk!. Was under pressure from many people to wean her as she is a big baby, but she's happy with just me at the mo, so am going to try and make it to the 6 month mark and then take it from there. I'm obviously doing something right with that weight! She's so much fun now, laughing and grinning all the time, and the other day she put her arms up to me when I went to pick her up, bless. All in all I'm loving motherhood again, as unplanned as it was this time. Hope you're all keeping well.

Eshay · 11/11/2004 14:39

Hi all,

Earlier this week there was some talk about expressing. I was wondering how much other people can get as with me it's very uneven: I'm very happy to get about 4 oz on the left but on the right I can easily get 10 oz. Which side is more normal? Or is the average of the 2 similar to what other people can get?

HelloMama · 11/11/2004 16:20

Eshay, how much I can express depends on alsorts of things. For me, the best time to do it is in the morning, but recently I have been quite underfilled - ruben seems to be feeding all the time, so I want to save all I have for when he wants it there and then! However, sometimes i can knock out 10oz in a few minutes and other times (usually when in a hurry) it takes AGES to get even 4-5oz.
