question about carseats.. we have moved Alexander over but now am having the jitters, he sits up for 30 mins happily playing with Benjamin's trains and is 21 lbs and is 74cms long I know he isn't 9 months yet but all the other things seemed right... Have I done the wrong thing?

MunkiBaby · 31/05/2007 17:44

Hiya JenT- i've been doing my own research into this subject for fear that i may put my one and only ds in a FF carseat too soon...and (i'm sure the other mums will give you plenty of first-hand advice as well)) i have only read on ALL the websites that we're to go by weight, not age (for obvious reasons.) i dont think you should worry about it too much. but if it puts you at ease, perhaps just monitor how your LO "feels" in the seat for a little bit (ie. comfort, keeping head up, etc)

Coriander73 · 31/05/2007 19:45

Hello....just put the children to bed & goodness me I don't know how I didn't throttle DD today! It's almost as if she knows she's being naughty & winding me up so she carries on anyhow! Naughty step was used twice, we had a full on tantrum when her friend was her & she just seemed to flit between being angelic & demonic...perhaps it's the terrible 3s' & not 2s'??

JenT, I had always understood that it's based purely on weight of baby NOT age. As long as he is more than 9 kilos (20-21lb) then he should be fine.

Ivor, think our wires got crossed...

Hi everybody! So many messages to read!

Cori - the absolute best investment toy-wise that we made for DS1 was his wooden train set - buy a second hand one from ebay if possible as they can be expensive to buy new. They can be trashed and thrown about and still work at the end of the day - and we then get relatives to buy thomas and friends trains at birthdays and christmas. DS1 goes against the grain a bit too and loves jigsaws

Been feeling a bit low of late, as you know, so decided today to find myself something to 'do'. I've found out about a tai chi class locally and I'm going to start going - at least it's something to look forward to each week (hoping it might get me a bit more toned too!) - nice thing is that the class is in a community centre which as a bar and garden (not tacky, very lovely and oldy worldy) so hoping I might meet some nice 'non-baby' folks too! Why does it get so dificult to meet new friends as you get older? or is it just me?!

compo · 31/05/2007 20:43

Cori - it's ddefinitely the terrible three's in our house, the 2's were a walk in the park compared to this
Hope evryone is having a nice week and the rainy weather isn't stopping too much half term fun.

On the ttc front I notice Lysette is on the ttc thread. Just in case she ever lurks here good luck

I think dd is ready to go inot ds' car seat but getting dh to get his head around looking into the booster seats for ds is another matter He has access to all the Which reports at work too so he really has no excuse... ggg... men!

compo · 31/05/2007 20:44

tft - it's definitely not just you. I enjoy the part time work I do just because I get a bit of adult conversation. I really should follow your example and do an exercise class but just can't summon up the enthusiasm/motivation/energy (excuses, excuses!)

Coriander73 · 31/05/2007 21:03

Good for you T42! I'm sure you'll enjoy getting out the house & having you time even if it is exercise of sorts!!!! I'm still doing the gym once a week but I loathe the whole gym culture. It's only as I've paid this chap for a few sessions to kick me up the backside ( to try & lose my babyweight...will I ever?!!) that I make myself go otherwise it's just a waste of money! Don't know how much longer I can keep it up though once I don't have my own income....

Well, I took the plunge & went to TRU today. I told DD that both her & J could have one toy each so she was rather excited! Went round the whole store (me looinig for suitable cars / trucks for a 9 month old etc) & in the end she chose a baby annabel..?!!!! What is it with girls & their dolls?? She does love books & puzzles but the doll & pink thing is quite something at times. Anyhow back to boy toys, the only thing I found any good was a plastic (yukkkk...I just love wooden toys!!!) train that has a ball you put in the top which falls out the bottom making a choochoo sound! J seemd to like it but I don't think DH was too impressed...he said why didn't you buy him a playmobil or something but the majority of stuff was for at least 2 years...so my question is am I being really thick here or am I just looking in the wrong bloody place?!! From what age can you give them a wooden train set??

Coriander73 · 31/05/2007 21:04

You can tell I haven't ever had to worry about boys & their toys !!!

teafortwoandtwofortea · 31/05/2007 23:25

Cori - don't worry, you're not looking in the wrong section, TRU is pretty rubbish for young boys IMO. Try ELC for their 'first vehicles' range - anything with wheels and chewable seemed to go down well here. We got DS1 his first train set (basic brio figure of 8) at age 1 but he only really started playing with it as a train set when he was 17-18 months. A blessing as it was around the same time as he got pneumonia and thankfully the hospital playroom had one - don't know how we'd have survived confinement if not for that.

(beware though, we now have a set that can easily fill the floor in our front room!)

If you end up buying new these people do budget sets - you can tell it's not proper brio but I really don't think the children care. Tescos also do their own range and it's all compatible.

JenT · 01/06/2007 09:19

I would just add that most types of "brio" railway fit together except for the ikea ones are not compatible with the others.

Taichi is supposed to be soo good for you, I am interested to see how you get on, please let us know!

Of to set Benjamin free at the local national trust property with 4 of his friends so hopefully will get some walking done it is about 2 hours to go round at a brisk pace.

tassis · 01/06/2007 13:42

cori, IMO you just want chuunky vehicles. The friction Bob ones are excellent, Tesco does a great chunky car for about 82p, Pat's van is good. Dd enjoys all of these! the ELC click clack track is great, as are their first chunky vehicles.

I'd probably wait until Christmas (at least) for the wooden train. We have tesco track, thomas trains and a few brio bits - still adding to our collection!

Marls001 · 01/06/2007 20:37

Cori - We found our wooden train set at IKEA, if that helps - it was very inexpensive and just matches the Brio enough to fit together, not perfectly, but can fit together.

I was at the annual Wal-Mart Shareholders' Meeting this morning! Unbelievable - it was like a rock concert. (Actually, at the end Jennifer Lopez sang.) Or a pep rally. A rah-rah event. Definitely something to witness. The Asda team was very enthusiastic!

In about an hour, we're headed to Branson, Missouri for the weekend. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Coriander73 · 02/06/2007 09:03

Happy Birthday to me !!!!

Having breakfast listening to an 80s compliation...(sad I know but it was a great decade!!!!!!) Going up to the West End to see Billy Elliot & then over to family for a bbq.. Very sweet listening to DD sing me happy birthday this morning..! Very warm & sunny here today...I may be tempted to wear a sleeveless top seeing as my bingo wings aren't as flabby as they were 3 months ago..

Just a very quick one - Bon Anniversaire, Cori!

Got to France all ok. Will keep dropping in to see what's going on, but may not have time to post.

Glad everyone's ok. More soon

bristols · 02/06/2007 17:27

Should that have been Bonne Anniversaire?

Almost forgot to mention - DS crawled for the first time today. Now the fun begins!!

mrsharrypotter · 02/06/2007 18:20

I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful weekend, I'm sat in the office wishing I was outsite

Cori, happy birthday, I hope you enjoyed Billy Elliot. My ds has a wooden train set and loves it, but he was a bit older when he got it. When he was tiny he always loved lego (quattro and then duplo) and Elizabeth loves bashing it about now whilst ds is 'building'
Myrtle, my lo has suddenly started sleeping more in the day agin, she had dropped her morning sleep but picked it up again about a week ago and is sleeping for 2 hours. Having said that, ds (3yrs3mnths) still has his afternoon sleep.
Munki, our age gap is 2.5yrs and ds has been amazing (carlesberg don't make big brothers, but if they did....)
Mabel, Elizabeth went a through a phase of screaming blue murder for hours whenever I put her to bed a couple of weeks ago. Well, I say for hours, I can't do controlled crying so she'd cry for a bit and I'd go in to her and then cuddle her till she was calm and then she'd scream again as soon as I put her down. She cried for a couple of mins when dh put her down, but he is out at least 3 nights a week so that's not an option. However, I worked the bank holiday weekend and 3 nights of grandma putting her to bed seems to have broken her of the habit (thankgod, it broke my heart).
JenT & Nally, hey (mhp waves)
I'm so glay that Bailey went to see Izzy in Greys Anatomy (sad I know that I care so much about tv). I didn't sit down all evening because I was afraid i would fall asleep and miss it again!

We've had a nice half term, Elizabeth cut her 6th tooth and ds, for the 1st time ever, did a poo in his potty yesterday, swiftly followed by 8 more (just little one's, I don't think he's quite worked out that he should stay on it till he's finished) and then went all night without a nappy and a nice dry bed this morning. I can't beleive that it just clicked for him.

Take care x

mrsharrypotter · 02/06/2007 18:20

Bristols, congrats on your crawler

compo · 02/06/2007 19:20

Happy Birthday Cori
Another Grey's Anatomy fan here too. Love McDreamy
Going to be inceasing my hours at work soon. Will be working every Thursday 9am-8pm
Means won't see kids at all that day. Will also be working Fridays 9-6 but no weekends so it's actually better than now

teafortwoandtwofortea · 03/06/2007 10:27

Crawling?!!! at 8 months! OMG - run for your lives!!!...

Congratulations Bristols - rather you than me

Well DS2 has finally learned to sit properly - manages up to 10 minutes but regularly falls over! I think the ring thing wasn't really helping him as he still won't sit in that. Crawling (thank God!) is definitely a way off here!

Happy Birthday to Cori - hope you had a wonderful day I completely agree with MHP about the bob the builder toys btw - they are fab.

I went to put DS2 in my car yesterday and the poor little gut is absolutely bursting out of his car seat - the shoulder straps are way too low now even though his feet are not scraping the back seat (I can see a design flaw there). So I am going to bite the bullet and hope you lot are right about the weight not age thing and for the first time ignore my HV. - I must be the only one on MN who actually listens to her!

fairysnuff · 03/06/2007 14:01

Hello all, been absolutely ages since I was last on.
I have read through the last couple of days.
Nally what is your baby being x-rayed for?
Is it the hip thing too? Was that you Bristols? with the allignments? I haven't looked at DD's hips at all and we haven't had an 8 month check up! Haven't really seen a HV since about three months except in passing
We go along to a Breast Feeding Support group (booby group, to me!) ,almost, every week so I weigh her there and sometimes measure. So all her charts are up to date and stuff, but no-one has actually looked at her, on a proffesional level??
She is still not 19lb yet. nearly but not quite, so no signs of a FF seat yet.
But she is crawling quite the thing, following me through to the kitchen and pulling herself up to a standing position at the back of my legs whilst I do dishes. Not an easy position to get her out of
And she has managed to figure out how to get herself down from her standing position, at the couch. Where she seems to spend most of her day!
At the moment, the game of the day is to pick stuff up and throw it away! This is best done at the highchair, so that she can feed the dog her dinner!!
I am so proud of her with eating though, she can now eat a pear! It is so funny to see her mouth packed as she slowly figures out how to suke and mush it down, then opens like a little bird for the next bite!
On trains, we were given a fisher price one, recently, that sings songs and travels accross the room (to encourage crawling, DD just watches it go though and crawls in the opposite direction!) But I don't think that is what you guys are talking about
I haven't got any dolly's for DD yet, I wonder if I should. But then again, maybe I don't want to start her down that track to soon, eh?

mrsharrypotter · 03/06/2007 14:14

Compo, I love Mcdreamy too, dh thinks I watch it for the interesting storylines
TFT, Elizabeth is in her ff car seat, her legs were far too long for the other one so as soon as she reached 20lbs she was in ds's car seat. My hv said to put a folded up towel under her bum to make her tall enough but she is anyway. She looks like it was made for her!
