Morning all - new thread as the old one's about to hit the 1000 posts limit.

Not so great this morning - feel like an egg-bound chicken IYSWIM. Grrr - especially as I managed to avoid it all the way through pregnancy. And not sure if there's anything I can take for it while I'm feeding?

OP posts:

divastrop · 16/05/2007 22:46

sponge-you havent poisoned him

i dont think anything of giving a baby a bit of calpol now after all the drugs dd2 had pumped into her when she was just 2 weeks old(morphine, sedatives, antibiotics etc etc).
can your dp not cut his hours atall?you sound lonely

DollyPopsOut · 16/05/2007 22:59

Calpol and grip water are fine - if it makes them more comfortable it has to be a good thing. Would massaging his tummy help his wind at all?

Have you got mummy friends nearby to meet up with? I found things very hard with DD1 until I hooked up with some local birds with babies the same age. It's great to have someone to share the early months with in the daytime when DP is out - and having a few drinks with them made me feel a bit more like myself pre baby IYSWIM. Hope LO is better soon.

Blonde - glad you are feeling more chipper today. I think this meet up is a good idea. Foxy's garden might be a long way for Sazzy though. Perhaps the South Bank or one of the parks might be easier? Just a thought. So far definite maybes are me, Foxy, Sazzy, Blonde (rosy and kitty in spirit ) - anyone else? which days suit people generally? Mon and Wed are best for me as I only have 1 to grapple with! Other days very possible too though - happy to fit round everyone else .

Off to the tubby thread now. See you tomorrow X

London lasses... Kate and I will do our best to be there!!

Mossie · 17/05/2007 07:48

morning, typing 1 handed here

bertie has a cold, seems to have affected his feeding too, he doesn't open wide enough to latch on atm, so doesn't get enoguh milk, he hasn't had a poo for ages and ages (does wet his nappies though)

bit worried about his latch, any suggestions? will he get any milk by just sucking on the nipple?

LunarSea · 17/05/2007 08:07

Mossie - if you're getting wet nappies, he must be managing to take some fluids on board. Don't worry about not too many poos either as it's actually pretty normal in a bf baby - Toby only poos about once every other day, it's just that they're pretty efficient at digesting it so there isn't actually must waste.

Jay - yes got the cream thnaks. Did you not get my email to say that even if you don't want anything for it I'll put some money in charity box? Is there any particular charity you'd like me to give it too.

OP posts:
Mossie · 17/05/2007 08:09

Right, Bertie has gone to sleep now.

I'm worried about him - yes, again - I took him to the Doctor's and he slept right through, Doctor checked his chest and it was fine, but didn't manage to hear his cough. But basically he seems to have a cold.

He isn't opening wide enough to latch on atm, he is very tired and sleepy (hurray! you're thinking, and I'm not complaining in some ways as it gives me chance to get stuff done, finally - but it isn't like him) and just doesn't want to, he basically sucks on my nipple for a while then falls asleep after a few minutes.

So I'm concerned - he's not done a pooey nappy for a day and a half, either. Any advice? Will he start to latch on properly again once the cold has gone? In the meantime, is he getting any milk by sucking on just my nipple?

Jay, I read your message and feel so for you. You poor thing, I do know a little of what you're going through. Bertie went through a period of about two and a half weeks where all he would do was cry and feed - if he wasn't feeding he was crying inconsolably. Occasionally he would sleep, after being soothed with a dummy, swaddle, rocking, singing, absolutely everything, for at least an hour.

It was horrible, and he still has a day here or there when he is like that. And it's awful, because you're meant to be enjoying your new baby, and all you're doing is wishing away the days, and thinking, "he'll be older soon, and this will stop" instead of enjoying how he is now. Every day is a struggle and it's worse because you can't take him to a mums and babies group because he will scream and cry all the way there, during, and all the way back.

As for calling hin "the boy" - when Bertie was / is doing that - I called him Gollum!

DollyPopsOut · 17/05/2007 08:09

Mossy- he won't get any milk just from the nipple I am afraid. He actually has to work the breast tissue to make the milk come out. Your nipples will get very sore as well if he isn't on and is just suckingthem rather than milking the boob itself.

Have you got a nasal aspirator? It is vile but one of the best things for a baby with a cold IMO. It is basically a tube to put up the nose with a pump on the end to suck out the mucus. THis means that the baby's nose is clear and he can latch on again. Superdrug, mothercare and jo jo sell them, as well as the old fashioned chemist round the corner, so should be quite easy to come by. Used it on Tilly from about day 4 as we got DD1's rotten cold once we came home from hospital. You can also get nose drops from most chemists which are supposed to work, though I haven't tried them myself.

Other than that, could you express a bit and dribble it into his mouth from a bottle lid?

DollyPopsOut · 17/05/2007 08:13

LUnar is completely right about the nappies too - if they are wet, something is going in and BF babies often don';t poo much as they use it so efficiently. And he won't forget to latch if he doesn't feed much for a day or so .

I worry constantly about everything so I know how you feel. Text me if you fancy a chat and I'll text you my home no. XXXXX

Shrinkinglily · 17/05/2007 08:22

Aww poor Bertie, hope he gets over it quickly. I've no idea about the latch thing, I'm sure we get it wrong often here.

well it's my uncles funeral today. My sis is coming over and it'll be nice to see family I hardly ever meet but the context is very sad. I feel very sorry for my aunt, they were very close and besotted with each other even after 22 years together. Actually it made me decide to try and be more loving to dh.

Spongecake the restaurant life isn't very family friendly is it.

Ah well, I'm a bit somber this morning.

TheBlonde · 17/05/2007 08:22

Mossie - DD has a cold and I've been using saline drops to shift the snot.

Mossie · 17/05/2007 08:24

X posts - Lunar that is reassuring about the poos.

It's terrible isn't it, being so obsessed by poos?

Spongecaked I have given Bertie gripe water, it doesn't seem to do much but it makes me feel like I'm doing something! I'm sure it's not poisonous, it's been going years... mil used it with her ds, back in the early sixties!!

Do you know anyone locally, are there any Mums and babies groups, or a Surestart where you can meet other Mums?

Sazzy... I've not forgotten your CDs btw I've just been busy trying to sort Bertie's feeding etc. ... will get on it today!

Evenhope sorry your other walkers weren't so friendly!

Shrinky! I love the name Rosy, didn't realise it was your real name. It's such a shame that if I ever had a dd, I could never use it - dh's surname is West!!

Diva I piled on the pounds about two years ago, I think it was linked with giving up smoking. I lost it by giving up carbs (and drinking loads of coffee )- I realised most of the carbs I was eating were bread!!

I now have to find a new way to lose the weight, I'm not sure Atkins is entirely healthy with bfing, and I can't drink shedloads of caffiene! When Bertie settles into less of a crying phase, I think I'll get out and about with the pram and the dogs more often.

Callie / Foxy - I need to do the pelvic floor exercises actually, keep forgetting!

Dolly glad you got some good bargains!

Right, I'm off to do the dishes before young Bertie wakes, I always feel a bit better when the kitchen's clean and tidy.

Hugs to anyone I've missed... will try to come on here more often but things keep getting in the way!

Oh forgot to say... my hair is now pillar box red and in a short bob (cut courtesy of mil - couldn't get time to go to a proper hairdresser)!!

Mossie · 17/05/2007 08:26

X posts - will get one of those nasal thingies! It is reassuring to know something is going in, yes I am worried that a few days and he will forget how to latch, iyswim... so glad to hear he won't!!

foxcub · 17/05/2007 10:02

OMG why is Monti yowling???

Just a quikkie:

half term picnic in fatfox house:

Sazzy
Dolly
TheBlonde

anyone else, please cut and paste your names to add.

I can only do Tues and Fri, as we have a treat lined up for Weds/Thurs and are going to the Kingston Green fayre on the bank holiday monday. (its very good by the way)

Moss - have you tried sqeching your nipple into a long conical shape (imagine its plasticine) and then really shoving Berties mouth on? Motni has a narrow/shallow latch too, so I often have to do that, to get the max tissue into his little mouth. Aim for the back of the upper pallet with the end of the nip

oood gaaawd gotta go - its so stressy when they scream isn't it?

TheBlonde · 17/05/2007 10:31

Fox - Tues or Fri should be fine for me

sazzybee · 17/05/2007 11:39

Is half term the week with the bank holiday Monday in it? I can only do Friday as we're going away walking over the weekend (well I'm walking, elliot is unlikely to be )

Mossie - don't worry about the CD - whenever you've got a mo which I know are never very often! Considering the amount of time I spend hanging round the house I never seem to have any free time - weird
Oh and Elliot goes for days without pooing - 3-4 days usually. Oh and pillar box red hair? Excellent! Pics please I have been thinking about dying mine pink for the duration of my maternity leave as I really can't get away with it when I'm in the office.

I have been putting fake tan body lotion on after my shower in an attempt to make me feel like I am taking some care of myself. Yesterday E started yelling so I ran to deal with him. I realised this morning in the daylight that I look like I've got some horrible skin disease on my shins How long does it take to fade? Thank god it's not warm enough to have bare legs

sazzybee · 17/05/2007 11:49

That is just way too many smilies in one post

divastrop · 17/05/2007 12:02

mossy-the saline nose drops are good.they soak the dry snot and the baby sneezes it out.nice!

i remember dd2 being suctioned every day...from the chest as well as the nose.ewww.i never bothered getting a nasal aspirator.

as long as he's weeing then he's not getting dehydrated(thats what my gp said was most important when i took Elsie).

rosy-all the best for today

ive not been managing very well in the mornings this week.i keep having to send ds and dd1 to school on their own then take ds2 to nursery after.its cos Elsie keeps waking about 4-5 for a bottle which means she wantsa another one around 8 am and that just isnt convenient!i really need her to have one about 6.30,then i can get up and dressed after shes been fed and she wont need another feed till i get back from the school run.why wont she do as shes's told?i dont understand

kiwibella · 17/05/2007 12:26

what a day... I am sure that I can hear the harrassed tones when I read your posts . I've given up wasting the energy trying to make it seem like everything is ok and am feeling really sullen today. We went back to bed after the school run and I only woke because the phone went. Don't really feel any better.

Mossie... if you are up for it - my MIL advises sucking on the baby's nostrils yourself to extract the mucus. I've never been up for it. I ditto your concerns about pooing. Actually, I'm not worried that Kate poos about twice a week but what the others have said is right. As long as Bertie has wet nappies and doesn't appear to be in discomfort, he should be ok. I have been told that Kate has 'slow bowels' .

At times I think I am invisible. I popped in first thing and said I would come along to the London meet up. We are in East London.

NewMum24 · 17/05/2007 14:30

Hey Foxcub it is my 1st baby.

I thought id introduce myself to you all properly now.

My names Gem and im 24 from the cambridgeshire area. I have a son born on 4th march, he weighed 7lb 7 1/2 born at 4.57pm on a sunday. Was in labour for 13 hours. Oh my god the pain i was expecting but he tore me to shreads when he come out (i was told 7lb was a big baby for me but i blame my midwife for not telling me when to push and when to not) I had a 4th degree tear which is apparently the most serious ( he tore from my vagina across the perineal through my anus spinchter into muscle...very painfull had aload of stiches but recovered now!!

He is now a bonny boy of 10 weeks 4days and now weighs a whopping 14lb 3 oz..he aches my arm....but then i am a weakling.

I was a small size 8/10 before but now am 10/12 but im happy with my shape ( got a little flabby belly) i still have the big brown line going down my belly...how long does it take to go?

Ive just had my 1st period (since the lochia thing) and it was 2 bloody weeks!!! Think might be something to do with the implant i had in my arm? Had check up at docs and my stiches have all healed. Tryed having sex with my partner but it really really hurt...dont see how baby2 will ever come?! LOL

A bit about my son. He is alert and always looking around. He hates to lay down. Likes to sit in his chair or be held on your lap sitting so he can look around. Hates being on my shoulder unless his head is clear to see! Nosy! He dosnt like to go his tummy gets really frustraeted and screams!
I think he is quite a contented baby.
He wees alot and they smell which im told by HV is common of boys...any one else find this? He has cradle cap bad at the mo. He keeps scratching it and making it bleed so hes in mittens at night time. I got some shampoo from docs for him.

Well ive rabbled on enough. Hope to talk to some of you...missing adult talk!!

shanks313 · 17/05/2007 14:45
