So my 9 day old baby boy was delivered by emcs at 37+5 gestation due to presenting breech (waters broke and contractions started). First baby so lots to learn!

Currently giving him expressed milk and formula topup. We tried breastfeeding but there was latch issues, he got very frustrated as he wasn't getting satisfied and my nipple was cracked and bleeding within a couple of days. I then got blocked ducts and the whole thing was a disaster really. I feel like a bit of a failure and did get help from bf clinic for the latch but it was little too late. With the c section recovery I just feel too exhausted to have him on the boob constantly and least with formula he is getting some decent sleep (although I'm usually expressing during this time so don't get a proper rest).

Oh and his fussy time is between 10pm -2am. He tends to feed and need winded on repeat between this time. It's exhausting but tonight I had a nap from 7-10pm in anticipation.

Come and join me for some chat...

I have the same with my DSS getting jealous of the attention I need to give my DD but then he's 4 so it's to be expected going from the youngest to middle child Hmm

DD completely different today from yesterday, had a good long afternoon nap 3.5 hours! No screams! All night. Had nice relaxing bath and evening feed now is quietly chilling in her Moses. Just waiting for her to drift off now Smile

Haven't done anything different with her today from yesterday. She likes to keep me on my toes Wink

That's great news carolann Smile

We've had tears and a bit of a chat, bit calmer now. Parenting is exhausting!

purpleviolet1 · 09/05/2017 23:22

Glad to hear Smile

We've started on medication for reflux, infant gaviscon, this evening. Today was a better day than yesterday but my heart kept breaking seeing him so hysterical. Can totally hear the milk coming up and then him gulping it back down. Happening for a good two hours after a feed. Sometimes he will take milk out, other times I can see it in his mouth but then he swallows it. It seemed to have come on so suddenly over just a few days but in hindsight it was probably building up over the last couple weeks. He has ALWAYS been a very noisy sleeper and apparently that's a symptom. Don't know how true the following is but good head control and being very alert are also symptoms, both of which lots of people have commented on Hmm

Glad to here things have progressed to help your DS purple hope he starts to feel better Flowers

purpleviolet1 · 10/05/2017 12:24

Thanks Carol, been a tough few days. Don't know if he has just become
clingy or whether he is just so uncomfortable at the moment but he is only having settled periods in my arms. Poor soul.

How is your LO now? Has she got colic?

Hugh - thanks for sharing. Was he on any medication for the silent reflux? Ds is gaining weight thankfully as he is doing a lot of comfort eating. Either that or he is constantly having the dummy. That's when he's not screaming!

Got a wedge thing to put under his mattress to help keep him at an incline. Think we'll give it a week, if no improvement then will go back to docs on Monday.

No idea, went to the doctors about it yesterday. Mentioned the screaming in the evening, spitting up hours after feeding, arching her back, not wanting to be put on her back and bring knees up to her tummy

She said ask my HV!! She did give me some cream for the rash she has around her neck. I did say given it's location could the skin be irritated by spit up being wiped away and when she dies it during the night and I'm not awake to clean it up she said " yeah maybe "

So HV here on Friday to ask her. We did have a better night last night. No screaming, bit unsettled and no long sleep after 8pm but I didn't mind as long as she wasn't in pain. Hasn't had a midnight feed in about a week but it was back last night. Also had a bit of clingy time from 3-4 but let me sleep in til 10 after her 6:30 am feed Grin

Carolann8584 · 10/05/2017 12:54

Does not Dies!! Horrible auto correct!!

purpleviolet1 · 10/05/2017 13:45

Could be reflux - have a read up on it

OP posts:
purpleviolet1 · 10/05/2017 13:47

Obviously different degrees and you might not want to medicate. Simple measures like keeping her upright after a feed for 30mins and raising her basket or cot so she is sleeping on an incline might help.

purple and Carol Sorry your LOs have been struggling, hope things improve soon.

DS had his first set of vaccinations this morning. I was a bit nervous that he might be inconsolable and unwell, unsettled etc afterwards, but it's been fine so far, touch wood. He did cry when he had the jabs Sad But a cuddle calmed him down and then he fell asleep. Apart from waking up briefly for a feed and a nappy change, he's been asleep ever since! I'm enjoying the peace Wink

troodiedoo · 10/05/2017 14:54

Aw NameChange30 it's not nice to watch. It does tend to make them sleepy after though. I used to give dd1 calpol about 20 mins before jabs. And a cuddle after usually does the trick.

Well had my 6 week check at the doctors. Was told they didn't do it anymore unless I was having problems! So wasted my time. I did get back my pill prescription while I was there.

NameChange30 · 11/05/2017 15:32

Thanks troodie and Hugh. Turns out I spoke too soon yesterday... after sleeping for much of the day, he woke up around 4ish and was unhappy for the rest of the afternoon and evening. He had a slightly raised temperature and just wanted to be fed and cuddled, screamed when we had to change him and woke up every time he fell asleep and we put him down Confused He woke up pretty much hourly during the night. I've been praying for him to have a decent nap today so I can nap too, but he hasn't so far. I'm beside myself with exhaustion Sad

Thanks Hugh. His temperature only went up to about 37.7 if I remember rightly (brain seriously under par today!) I did give him infant paracetamol a few hours after the jabs, wanted to give it as soon as we got home but he had fallen asleep and it seemed silly to wake him up! When I did give it to him, he spat half of it out again, so that might have been why he woke up a few hours later feeling unwell and upset. I gave him the next dose more slowly and he didn't spit so much out thankfully.

Anyway, my advice is to give infant paracetamol just before or just after the jabs - maybe take it with you to the doctors, in case baby falls asleep on the way home like mine did!

NameChange30 · 11/05/2017 15:59

He's not unwell or unhappy today, btw, just won't bloody sleep!

purpleviolet1 · 11/05/2017 16:23

Thanks for sharing Hugh, great you got out to the beach! How was LO overnight? Hope DD managed to sleep.

Namechange sorry to hear about LO's experience after the jabs, hope you managed to get a nap today? I think we are allowed to give two doses only of the paracetomol is that right? Ours our on Tuesday! Taking the paracetamol with us.

Carolann what do they mean they don't do 6 week checks anymore!?!?

So the gaviscon hasn't worked at all, well only very slightly. Still crying the majority of the time , especially 30mins after a feed, usually until the next feed. Unable to nap for more than 10-15 mins during the day. Was grunting and wriggling all night and then crying. Very unhappy. Lots of gulping noises. Horrible to see them so distressed 😩 Spoke to doc today (when she phoned to say I need to have my bloods repeated as my infection markers are still high) and she said to bring him in (arrange with reception) but they never had any appts so they got another GP to phone me back who said she could write a prescription of ranitidine instead. So I've just given him the first dose.

It's been such a horrendous few days and my body is aching wth exhaustion but I promised myself I would go to get him weighed and I did - putting on weight very nicely. He is definitely comfort feeding and I've cut down the feeds on their advice as they said it'll make the reflux worse. He is having approx 27oz in a 24 hour period and still wanting more. Tried to cut it back to 24oz. Annoying because all along they kept saying 'if he is having 4oz you need to offer 5oz' and when I said he was sometimes having 3/4 oz and other times finishing 5oz they said to offer 6oz and just follow his lead! As if I wasn't feeding him properly Hmm

8weeks 1day today and weighing 11lb 11oz.

purple

Really sorry you've had a tough few days. How annoying that they didn't have an appointment available. I had to make a real fuss to get the vaccination appointment... so if the reflux persists I suggest you insist on seeing a doctor sooner rather than later! Hope things improve for you both.

To answer your question about the paracetamol, after the vaccinations you can actually give 3 doses, as long as they're 4-6 hours apart. I looked it up on the NHS website beforehand, the nurse confirmed it and also gave me an information leaflet which confirmed it too. I think as a general rule you're not supposed to give infant paracetamol until they're 3 months old, but there's an exception for the vaccinations as the Men-B jab can often cause a fever.

Carolann8584 · 11/05/2017 17:20

purple yeah she said unless I was experiencing any problems I didn't need to be seen! She asked if I wanted her to do an internal, I said not particularly lol.

DD has been sooooo much better since I started keeping her upright after feeds. Thanks for the advice. Still using Infacol, her trapped wind isn't nearly as bad as it was, she very rarely screams with the pain now. Although she is having smaller feeds as well, I still make 5oz but she has 3-4 maybe 1 a day pushes it to 4.5oz.

She woke for her midnight feed at 1am then again at 4:30 and didn't go back to sleep until 9 for an hour so bit tired today.

Carolann8584 · 11/05/2017 17:28

Just checked my app, my DD had had just over 6 hours sleep since midnight! Yesterday she had a total of 16 hours!

purpleviolet1 · 11/05/2017 17:50

Thanks Hugh and namechange!

Carolann which app is this?? Also I've bought the wedgehog from
Amazon, £15 for two and hoping that will help with the reflux as well. It might help you further since you have benefitted from keeping DD upright after feeds! I don't think I could ever handle an internal again. It was the most painful examination Sad

DS has been mostly sleeping this afternoon after being
Up and distressed since 4am ish. He must be exhausted poor soul. Really hoping this ranitidine works Sad

It's called baby tracker, it trackers everything! So easy to use. If I didn't have it I would be lost remembering when she was last fed/ changed/ slept. You can put in activities as well plus temp tracker and medicine Smile

OH at his poker night (he runs it in a pub) DD had her bath not a peep out of her, she would normally winge a bit when getting dried. Had a good feed 4.5oz and now she's asleep in her Moses

As it has been 6 weeks and I've been for my "check up" BATH NIGHT for meeeee yay.

My DM bought me a bath pamper kit a couple of weeks ago and now I can use it Smile
