March 2017 babies

So my 9 day old baby boy was delivered by emcs at 37+5 gestation due to presenting breech (waters broke and contractions started). First baby so lots to learn!

Currently giving him expressed milk and formula topup. We tried breastfeeding but there was latch issues, he got very frustrated as he wasn't getting satisfied and my nipple was cracked and bleeding within a couple of days. I then got blocked ducts and the whole thing was a disaster really. I feel like a bit of a failure and did get help from bf clinic for the latch but it was little too late. With the c section recovery I just feel too exhausted to have him on the boob constantly and least with formula he is getting some decent sleep (although I'm usually expressing during this time so don't get a proper rest).

Oh and his fussy time is between 10pm -2am. He tends to feed and need winded on repeat between this time. It's exhausting but tonight I had a nap from 7-10pm in anticipation.

Come and join me for some chat...

Good luck with the night shift everyone Flowers

purpleviolet1 · 23/04/2017 06:38

It's quite a rollercoaster isn't it carolann Sad

How was everyone's night? Ds was unsettled for a couple hours in the evening, pretty much crying non stop. He got overtired so struggled to sleep until I held and rubbed his head. He was a little unsettled when he woke up as well for his feed and up again now. I didn't manage Any rest yesterday during the day so struggling just now. Dh is up with him but ds so noisy can hear him through earplugs!

Mine was very similar purple. I'm wondering if it's caffeine related. I have a nice strong coffee at six to get me through the evening. May try to go without it tonight :(

Carolann8584 · 23/04/2017 11:50

We had our usual night, feed at 9, 1, 4:30 and 8:30. Think she understands night time, we have her Moses basket downstairs during the day for naps and upstairs during the night so I think that has worked well as she settles herself after each feed at night.

My DD doesn't have a bit yet, or a room Shock really need to start working in that but my free time is taken up by cleaning, catching up on washing and napping. Not had more than 3 hours straight sleep since She was born! And they are rare. Normally get 2 hours at most.

Hoping once she starts (if she ever does) having 4-5 hour naps I can start decorating or maybe venture into gardening! Grin Oh and more napping Grin

Carolann8584 · 23/04/2017 16:20

Why did auto correct change cot to bit! COT is a word

troodiedoo · 23/04/2017 18:04

hugh mine will down 3 oz of expressed in less than five mins. That's with tomee tipee 0 months bottles.. she will nurse for up to 40 mins on the boob.

Awww my LO is finally getting too long for her newborn sleepsuits!

Typical my DD had a 3 and a half hour nap this afternoon. I couldn't join her though, we have my DSSs at the weekend and today the eldest turned 7 today so didn't feel right taking myself off for a nap, t
Let's hope it becomes her afternoon norm! I can only dream Wink

NameChange30 · 23/04/2017 21:45

DS has been asleep for 3 1/2 hours (usually only sleeps for 3 hours max) and isn't showing any signs of stirring... weird! I'm exhausted and dying to go to bed, but I just know the moment I fall asleep he's going to wake up hungry!

Hugh DH always gives DS his bottle of expressed milk, but I think he usually has about 120-150ml (depending how hungry he is Wink) but not all in one go, usually he will have some milk, then DH changes him, then he has the rest before falling asleep. Apparently it takes about 45 minutes in total. The bottle is Phillips Avent with a "natural" teat (whatever that is!)

Carolann8584 · 23/04/2017 22:14

Any FF mums......

My DD is 1 month today, on 3-4oz every 2-3 hours. We use a number 1 teat (avent) anybody using number 2 teat?

Not sure if DD would like more in 1 feed but gets too tired or is "working" too hard to get the amount she needs. Not sure when to move on to the next teat.

NameChange30 · 23/04/2017 22:17

I'm BFing not FFing but we do use a bottle for expressed milk. I've just been looking at the Avent bottles and teats, I think number 1 is for 0-3 months and number 2 is for 3-6 months, but I could be wrong... it's a bit confusing especially when sleep deprived

NameChange30 · 23/04/2017 22:21

Info here:
www.philips.co.uk/c-m-mo/baby-bottles-teats
It looks like number 2 is suitable from 1 month + Smile

purpleviolet1 · 23/04/2017 23:25

Hi carolann. We have the dr brown bottles and moved to level 2 (3-6 months according to the guideline) and is drinking better and with less wind thankfully. He does have the comfort milk though which is a little thicker and I hadn't realised but on the box it recommends medium flow tests for this reason.

Well DS gave me a smile this morning which was amazing but I have somehow lost my sense of joy and wonder since he has been awake since 5am, hasn't slept for longer than a brief (10-15min max) snooze after a feed, and has woken up every time I've tried to put him down. He tolerated his bouncer while I ate, showered and dressed but apart from that I haven't had a break. TEN HOURS and counting. I just had a sob Sad

Thanks Hugh! Sorry you're having a tough day too - I can't imagine having other DC to look after as well, you're a superstar! (also, cat PJs?! Awesome!)

DS finally went to sleep thank God and I had a short nap but woke up far too soon! Still, enjoying the peace and quiet now.

We have an Ergobaby Adapt which he doesn't seem to be a huge fan of, he cries when we put him in it and only calms down when I set off walking - don't think I can potter about in it. Also bought a stretchy wrap but haven't even got around to trying it yet Blush To be honest it gets to the point when I just want to put him down so I can have a proper break and rest! Lucky he seems to like the bouncer chair so that's something.

purpleviolet1 · 24/04/2017 19:54

Sorry to hear namachange and Hugh, hope things are better now and you managed a rest. It's tough to keep up with them sometimes isn't it, I wonder how they manage to stay awake so long when we are ready to drop!

Think today was one of those days, after a nice afternoon at my DSILs came home gave DD a feed (2nd feed with number 2 teat) and 5 minutes after finishing she throw it up, screaming inbetween vomiting Sad curling up, face almost turning purple.

After 30 minutes she finally stopped and settled down.

Now she's just had her 8pm feed tried number 2 teat again but made her slow down when eating. Is there a 1.5 teat lol! 1 is too slow and 2 means she eats too fast

purpleviolet1 · 24/04/2017 21:53

Aww,, which formula is she taking? Maybe try over tomorrow and if no improvement move back to number 1 and then try in a few days again?

purpleviolet1 · 24/04/2017 21:53

Typical - ds been sleeping since 6.30 and although I came to bed at 7 I've not managed a wink. I've enjoyed some quiet time though and just generally relaxing 😎

She's on Aptamil 1 she's been on it since birth. Switched back to 1 teat for night feeds. She tends to have smaller feeds at night anyway.

Really was heart breaking watching her in pain. Not felt that helpless since I was pacing the ward when my labour started.

purpleviolet1 · 25/04/2017 07:28

For those of you whose LO's have had the sniffles, is the calpol saline nasal spray or drops easier to use? Ds 6 weeks tomorrow. Am sure they are both ok to use from
Birth?
