Morning,

I've just seen a product test aimed at our age group, if you're interested: Have a child aged between 6 and 10 months? Testers wanted for baby products
http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnetproductt_tests/2728400-Have-a-child-aged-between-6-and-10-months-Testers-wanted-for-baby-products

Although they might not pick me after I was disparaging of the "natural seawater" one!

Me624 · 12/09/2016 07:05

Eek Tri good luck, hope she doesn't bite you!

marmite hope DD gets on with a beaker. DS loves drinking water but he prefers me to hold the sippy cup for him - lazy boy!

DS has a cold bless him, he's super snotty. Will have to wash the sheet in his cot today as it's covered in green dried snot from where he sleeps on his front! I ended up with him in our bed as he woke up at 4.30 and would not go back to sleep, he's definitely under the weather as he then slept in until 6.45! He normally wakes at 5.30 sharp for a bottle. Hopefully he'll get over it quickly.

confusedlilly · 12/09/2016 07:24

We have started weaning here now.. Ds is nearly 25 weeks. He has had sweet potato & broccoli & pear so far. He loves all of them. Just a little a lunch time.

We are doing a mix so the above are purée and then I give him a blue berry wafer to eat himself. In a few weeks when I introduce breakfast I'm going to do toast etc after the school run when there is no rush does that sound ok?

I offered my 4year old dd some broccoli and it was disgusting apparently lol.. She used to love all veggies but currently hates all of them at home but will however eat or at least try them with her school dinners lol Hmm

Hello all,
Hope all is well in the world of babies:)
I have a question for anyone who can help?
DS was 6 months on 3rd September, we have started weaning and he is also fed formula in the day and breastfed last thing before bed in the night and first thing in the morning. He has never been good at pooing when he was ebf he would go 2 weeks without pooing. Since he's been formula fed he's been slightly more regular every other day to once a week depends really. But now his stools are a lot harder and he screams and really struggles to poo bless him and wondered if there is anything I can do to help soften them for him and its agony for him. I've tried giving him water but he's having non of it so stuck on what to do?!
Hope sleep training is going well for those of you trying it. We have been toying with control crying but he got himself in such a state the other night I didn't know what to do to settle him his sleep is getting so much worse and work is fastly approaching! I went in for a keeping in touch day this morning and was running on caffeine as I guess most of you are tooConfused

sherazade · 12/09/2016 16:51

Hi all
first - going a while without doing a poo is normal and healthy for breastfed babies. It means he's digesting all your milk as its so well digested by babies , and is not a sign of constipation.
However you have mentioned with weaning and formula he is passing hard stools and is in pain. This definitely is constipation. I would completely back off the solids and give time for your little ones tummy to get back on track and then start again . They don't 'need' the solids at this stage as its all about experimenting with taste and textures - food for fun till 1!

Me624 · 12/09/2016 18:35

first if you go back a page or two you'll see I had the same with my DS a few days ago although when he did go it wasn't hard so perhaps not quite as bad. I gave lots of water but prunes and very diluted apple juice were recommended by some of the others!

Poor DS is sooo snotty! Have been constantly wiping his nose today. He's definitely under the weather as he slept loads which he never normally does! I took advantage of his two hour nap this morning and batch cooked a load of meals for him - my freezer is now full and I've completely run out if tuppaware, I ended up freezing portions for him in sandwich bags!

FirstTimeMummy25 · 12/09/2016 19:35

Thanks Sher and Me. He has gone a long time before without pooing but when it did come it was soft but now the problem is it's just hard bless him, I gave him some purée with prunes in it this evening and I'll try apple juice tomorrow have done this when he didn't go for 2 weeks but stupidly didn't even think of doing it to soften.

Hope your da gets better soon Me it's awful when they are ill isn't it!

Purpleprickles · 12/09/2016 20:46

Me sorry to hear ds is poorly. Dd isn't great either, hacking cough but no cold but the most awful nappies. She normally poos once a day but it has been about 14 times in the last two days Shock I'm wondering if she is teething too because ds always had more dirty nappies when he was. I spoke to my lovely GP tonight and he said if she was hydrated and not being sick, on the whole well in herself then it is probably the cough virus. First she normally only poos once a day and I'd never have thought I'd moan she was going too much! What baby milk is ds on and has he been for long? I only ask because when I stopped bf ds we put him on SMA and he was terribly constipated. We switched to Aptamil and he was better, dd has it too and is ok on it.

I keep crying and I don't know why my emotions are high now. Anyone else felt sad this far in? I think it's the change of ds being back at school and also my neighbour who has a month older baby is back to work next week and we have been seeing loads of each other. I'm hoping it passes, am getting out for lots of walks and also I joined a new baby group today. Fingers crossed it goes.

Missikat · 12/09/2016 23:02

First-hope the prunes:apple juice helps get thing moving.

Me-sorry to hear your DS is poorly, hope he recovers soon.

Talking of pooing, since we've been weaning in earnest the number of times a day that Z goes is crazy! Yesterday he'd been 3x before 7.30am! Often he will poo 5 or more times between getting up and midday...I seem to be constantly changing nappies. Plus he gets really worked up if he has a pooey nappy which is the opposite of DS1 who couldn't give a toss if he was sitting in shit for ages (if I'd not noticed he'd been). Z will scream the house down, even if he goes in the middle of a meal, which is fairly common place.

How are everyone else's babies getting on with sitting? I know we have a couple of crawlers already but didn't know where everyone was at with sitting?

Z is able to sit now (albeit he's still very wobbly) with a tiny bit of support behind the back of his bum. I wouldn't leave him yet as he'd rolls sideways or backwards. He was seen by the physio last week who gave us some exercises/games to play with him to develop his core strength. It seems like he's pretty much on target tho as DS1 started sitting at 6 months and Z is just over 6 months corrected age. It's amazing he doesn't seem to be too far behind those actually born in March!

Me624 · 13/09/2016 08:07

Ugh awful nights sleep here Sad poor DS is just so snotty he can't breathe, sounds like he's drowning! We have a nasal aspirator and I have used it a few times but it makes him very unhappy bless him so don't like to do it too often.

Missi DS, despite being one of the crawlers, is not a particularly good sitter yet. He is pretty wobbly and topples either to the side or backwards if left for more than a few moments. Since he's been able to crawl he won't sit anyway, if I try and put him in a sitting position he immediately leans forward so he can get on his tummy - moving is just far more interesting right now! Most of the other babies I know IRL of the same age are still very wobbly too, so Z sounds like he's right on track for his corrected age.

docmcstuffins1 · 13/09/2016 08:34

Morning all!
*
Missi, Zach is doing so well, he's amazing!* O has started sitting unsupported within the last 2 weeks (he's 26 weeks on Friday). He's still a bit wobbly and tends to either topple sideways or fold in half until his face is nearly on the floor. He's getting stronger every day though. Nowhere near crawling yet, though it's amazing how far he can move with a combination of rolling and turning round on his belly.

We started weaning (BLW) a week ago as he was showing signs of being ready (sitting up, picking things up and putting them in his mouth) and he loved it, but he was getting TERRIBLE wind which was waking him up at night so we've backed off the solids for a bit to see if that helps. I'm praying it is just the wind waking him up as I am going back to work on Monday and we seem to have gone from 1-2 wakes a night to 6+ and I'm shattered! He's in the big cot now but still in his sleepyhead as when we tried without it he just kept rolling into the bars and waking himself up. It's getting a big cramped now though so I've bitten the bullet and bought a sleepyhead grand. I hope it works for the price!

Purpleprickles · 13/09/2016 09:37

Me I read about putting snuffle babe rub on the soles of their feet to help coughs and colds. Just tried it now with dd not sure if it will work.

FirstTimeMummy25 · 13/09/2016 10:42

Purple, I did this when DS had a cold and I would say it helped him.

Me624 · 13/09/2016 11:33

Thanks for the snuffle babe tip - I forgot I had some from last time DS had a cold! I've put some on his feet and he's just gone down for a nap so hopefully it helps.

DomesticAnarchist · 13/09/2016 19:01

Sorry to hear about the variously bunged-up babies. Hope they're all feeling better soon.

Sorry to piss on people bonfires again but there's no way the Vicks-on-feet thing works! Well, maybe its presence would mean the vapours might help a snuffly nose, but it's not absorbed by the feet or anything, it would work just as well on a muslin tied to the cot. (I'm sorry, I can't help myself!).

Can I just have a little pump-celebration? I've been managing to pump about 120mls most sessions at work, but this morning I did 180ml and only had to stop because I ran out of time! Beat my previous record of 165 which I did Sunday night! Oh how my horizons have narrowed!!

I've caved in and have booked a cleaner to come tomorrow while we're at work. I'm simultaneously terrified that I've handed a stranger a key and invited them to see my grubby house and so incredibly excited that Someone Else is going to clean the place (and hopefully do a better job of it than I can!). ConfusedGrin

No weaning here still. I think he's pretty much ready, but he's not overly interested yet. Only 23 weeks so plenty of time.

Hope everyone's doing ok. Hope it's not too hot wherever you are (it's 22C and grey here, as it's been all day)

1frenchfoodie · 13/09/2016 21:03

Dom how long does that pumping take? Really must time myself in prep for trying to do during journey to work and/or in gaps between legs of the journey (bus-train-tube). I can hand express about 120-150 though only do this in the early morning at the moment, guess I'd get more if pumping??

Crazy hot here where I am house/dog/granny sitting for my mum - it has a lot to do with her living room resembling a greenhouse with 7 ceiling to floor windows/doors. It is a bit cooler in the bedroom at least.

Hope the summer snuffles clear up soon. DD spends so much time eating her feet (any anything else in sight) any vaporub has to be on a tissue crocodile clipped to the cot bars out of sight Smile

DD has cracked sitting in the last couple of weeks, we get the occasional face plant but most of the time she can stop herself falling. Crawling not happening yet though, she is up on her knees a lot and looking promising but can only scoot backwards

TheMshipIsBack · 13/09/2016 21:05

Dom you are a pumping queen! I'm getting only 80-90 mL per session (though it's evening sessions only, when I am dryest). I'll let you know how I do when I'm at work next week Grin

missi T was a wobbly sitter until early last week, when she suddenly seemed to develop enough core strength to sit steadily. She's pretty good now, at 27 weeks.

Have spent the evening reviewing a paper for work. Can't believe I go back Monday! Poor T is going to be so unhappy for a few days till she gets used to DH and (hopefully) the bottle/cup. I will miss my little velcro milk monster. She goes to bed in her cot now for the first part of the evening, and if she hasn't woken up by the time I go to bed, I have a hard time getting to sleep without her warm little body snuggled up to me. It feels so comforting when I go to fetch her for her first night feed and I can feel her relaxing because she knows she'll be with me the rest of the night.

Of course last night she was so thrilled to be in with me that she woke up and wanted to play for two hours ... Grin

Purpleprickles · 13/09/2016 21:20

Dom would it upset you if I told you my friend and I were talking about visiting a healer today for shoulder pain Grin I'll report back on the magic of snuffle babe on feet, although I'm sure it's crap I'm just grasping at anything.

DomesticAnarchist · 13/09/2016 21:35

1french, I usually spend 10-12 minutes pumping at work, but do a longer one at home in the evening (and still get the least volume then).

I initially had a boots manual pump, but we've got loads of tommee tippee bottles so bought the TT manual pump when it was on offer last week (still might be). The boots on is very vacuum-based, whereas the TT one is much more like hand expressing in that the flange (great word) moves with the pump. I think it's this that's improved my pumping.

Backwards-crawling sounds brilliant!

TheM - yes, I struggle with evenings. I usually get about 30ml from one side and 90 on the other (in the mornings), but it was the weaker side going mental this morning (120 by itself)!

Oh, Purple, I can't handle the woo! Please try a physio instead! (I even struggle with osteopaths)

vroc81 · 14/09/2016 06:45

Great pumping dom I use the TT hand pump if I don't want to bother taking my electric and I'm sure I always get more milk with that although I think it can be a little rough on my nipples - though that could just be that after six months of pumping I'm basically turning into a cow udders and all-

Missi R is just starting to sit without wobbling sideways, she's fine in a high chair or on my lap when she's a bit wedged but otherwise still goes sideways, not helped that when sitting she suddenly remembers her toes and tries to shove them in her mouth..

Weaning is going ok, what's people doing for breakfasts? Weetabix went down well but she definately prefers to put things in her mouth herself, preferably if she's stolen it out of my hand!

Me624 · 14/09/2016 07:06

vroc we tend to do fruit for breakfast either in its own, puréed and mixed with yoghurt or porridge, wheetabix or toast/crumpets. DS has loved crumpets which he can pick up well on his own and don't go quite as soggy and disgusting as toast when sucked! Fruit in finger form he finds quite difficult to pick up as it's nearly all slippery - strawberries have gone down well as they're not so much.

We're going for a picnic today so I need to get a few things to make DS a picnicky lunch, I'm thinking some cubes of cheese, peppers and cucumber sticks, maybe a fruit pot. I don't want him to get too messy when we're in a park with limited facilities!

DS has now given his cold to both me and DH Sad

TheMshipIsBack · 14/09/2016 09:14

vroc It's toast and a piece of fruit for breakfast here, since porridge is mostly refused. I like me's crumpet idea, I'm going to get some to try with T.

Dom, I've got a spectra double electric pump, it's brilliant. I get that 80-90 mL in about 8 minutes. I'm planning to block out 2 x 30 minute pumping sessions in my calendar. I'll have to be flexible around other meetings and seminars, but I'm mostly worried I'll forget and miss a session, ending up with leaking boobs!

marmiteandcheeseplease · 14/09/2016 10:42

RE: pumping, I've got a phillips avent electric and it's pretty efficient - pumped 80ml this morning in 5 minutes. not sure how much more I would have got had I kept trying as I'm only pumping to introduce the idea of milk from a beaker rather than trying to get DD2 to drink it, so I'm not aiming to pump as much as possible. Introducing the beaker has been a bit faily, am hoping she will 'get it' a bit more once we start weaning. She will be 6 months on Saturday so will start then!

Purpleprickles · 14/09/2016 14:07

Sitting in a sweating car park at the retail park because you just want to keep your baby asleep Confused

vroc81 · 14/09/2016 15:21

With regard to pumping I've read you should pump for 10 - 15 minutes to help keep your supply up.. I notice I'm "empty" at about 10 but go for another 5 and sometimes get a second let down... I guess where your breastfeeding at different times of the day it's probably not so important but I am being very careful with my supply as I'm only pumping...

TheM I've got the spectra S1 after the lansinoh one broke and it is great isn't it! If someone had told me a year ago I would be able to note the benefits of different boob pumps I'd have laughed...

purple I did that the other day... Thankfully I have air con in the car but I did briefly think about the environment before enjoying the peace for a few more minutes!!
