Ffaux I was about to say the same as me, it's better to give them bigger chunks of food than small pieces. Aside from the ease of picking it up, they're less likely to choke on big bits as they're forced to chew/gum them, they won't just swallow them whole like they might with a small bit that fits easily in their mouth. It's important to remember too that an amount of gagging is normal and fine, and different to choking. When gagging they will be coughing and red and it's best to just let them work it out, when choking they'll be silent. I heard the mantra "loud and red, let them go ahead, silent and blue they need help from you". Would it help to get on YouTube and remind yourself what to do in a choking situation? I've just reminded myself I meant to do that...

thanks french, me, swear - that's really helpful! I did attend a baby first aid course when pregnant but wouldn't feel confident at all. DH is much calmer than me though in these kind of situations so I'll make sure he's always around until she gets a bit more used to it

Purpleprickles · 08/09/2016 21:56

Thanks French it's good to know it's not just me! After I posted she managed 30mins in her bouncy chair but woke up crying with tiredness. I then took her red eyed for a massive walk before collecting ds and she was awake the whole time but was clearly shattered. Arrrgghhhhh!

Me624 · 08/09/2016 22:14

Purple sorry you've had such a crap day nap wise. DS has thrown in a few of those recently and it's hellish - nothing fills me with dread more than when I spend 1 hour plus trying to get him down for one and then he wakes up after 15/20 minutes!

This is the second time in two days I have found a huge clump of my hair on the floor. I didn't expect post partum hair loss to come 6 months in! I hope I don't lose too much more, my hair is ridiculously fine as it is without losing a whole bunch more.

Spent a fortune on clothes for DS today, I bought some things in the next size up though as he spent such a short amount of time in 3-6 that I don't want the same to happen again with 6-9 and waste loads of money. I figured if I bought the main winter items (coat, thick jumpers etc) in 9-12 then they should see us through and if it is cold enough for them in the autumn then he can just wear them and they'll be a bit big!

confusedlilly · 09/09/2016 07:49

Nap times here are hit and miss.. In the week we have a routine with school runs etc and he naps really well. Come the weekend it all falls apart!

Had ds weighed this week and the little chunk is 18lb 10oz, I also had to go and buy 6-9 month clothes as he well outgrown his 3-6month stuff. I haven't gone mad this time tho as I still have a lot with labels on that he didn't get to wear Blush

QforCucumber · 09/09/2016 07:53

Oh no me hope the hairloss is just temporary.
After your cutting up advice I tried ds with toast this morning, he seemed to really like it - cut a slice into 4 and he played about with 2 of the pieces, actually swallowed some too.
Removable the clothes - I got a load in the sainsbury sale the other day in 6-9 and 9-12. Lots of tshirts for only £1/ £2 each. Not much online but our local store had loads.
The night wakes seems to be increasing in number lately, 5 mins feed and back to sleep but if I hold off the feed he's screaming for ages. Only other way to get him off is pick him up and rock and shush him so can't really win with sleep crutches. Frustrating as he gets himself off to sleep on his own fine.
Officially onto formula for all day feeds and then through the night and 1st morning still on boob - ds doesn't seem to care at all.

confusedlilly · 09/09/2016 08:08

Also has anyone's babies forgotten they can roll from Tummy to back?! Ds seems too have and just shouts/screams at me until I roll him back!

QforCucumber · 09/09/2016 08:15

confused ds did that for about a week, now just rolls back over every time you try tummy time so no chance for any crawling practise haha.

TriJo · 09/09/2016 09:22

Had to buy 9-12m vests for stringbean baby (17lb 7/7.9kg @ 72cm) yesterday - he managed to projectile puke in the middle of Westfield Stratford and soak through his t-shirt and vest and I didn't have a spare one in the changing bag. They're not even super-massive on him, loose width-ways but perfect for length, his 6-9 ones were getting to be a stretch to close and that causes more nappy leaks.

DS had a way better sleep than me, he slept 7:30 until 6:45 with only a dream feed around 1am. I found it almost impossible to get asleep, felt like my brain was on speed until 3 and I nearly cried myself when he woke up.

FS84 · 09/09/2016 16:51

I was wondering how the sleep training is going for those who are doing it? DS is up 6 times a night and always wakes 45 mins after bedtime... I'm so exhausted after months of this.

QforCucumber · 09/09/2016 19:27

fs from what I understand on our Facebook chat it seems to be a bit Hit and miss typically. My ds will happily fall asleep by himself at the start of the night but wakes after 3 hours and has to have boob to get back to sleep, then 2 hourly after that too.

Me624 · 10/09/2016 08:35

Morning all, hope you've all had good nights.

Bit worried about DS as he is clearly constipated - he keeps straining for a poo but nothing's coming out. He was normal Thursday but yesterday nothing despite lots of straining other than a teeny tiny smear on the nappy. This morning more of the same, he's really straining to go but it's not coming. I made sure he had loads of water and veggies yesterday, any other suggestions? We're going to a wedding today so no opportunity to nip to the shops but I will tomorrow if he still doesn't go today. I've heard prunes suggested!

Timetogrowup2016 · 10/09/2016 08:43

Yes to prunes me!
Dd loved them as well and lapped them up.
I believe it's very common for babies when they begin weaning.
I just bought the Ella's pouch

FirstTimeMummy25 · 10/09/2016 08:55

DS does the same, when he was purely breastfed he could go up to 2 weeks without going bless him he's slightly more regular now but gets upset when trying to go and clenches his fists. Doctor advised me to give apple juice diluted with cooled boiled water. When I did this within an hour he went.
Good luck I hope he goes soon it can't be nice for them being constipated. And enjoy the wedding!

Me624 · 10/09/2016 09:14

Thanks Time and First, I'll try both of those tomorrow if he doesn't go today.

I'm hoping the wedding will go well! It's fairly local so we can come home if we need to but we're hoping that DS will cope with a change of routine and allow us to stay a bit later into the evening. Planning to take a baby grow and get him changed about 7 when he normally goes to bed and pop him into his pram and hope he goes off to sleep! I've got him an adorable little outfit too Grin

vroc81 · 10/09/2016 10:05

Me have a good time at the wedding and hope that poop doesn't make an appearance all over his outfit! This is what usually happens to me...

Sleep has definately gone to pot here with multiple night wake ups but suspect it's only what she should have been doing all along!!

DomesticAnarchist · 10/09/2016 11:26

Morning!

I wouldn't worry, Me. If you're at a wedding today, you'll all be in fancy outfits and will need to be quiet at times. This guarantees an poonami/poomageddon/poosplosion situation at the quietest most awkward moment that will leach through onto your clothes too. I will put money on it!

DS2 was fine at nursery in the end. His key worker seemed like someone I can trust. And I've been popping over to feed him rather than pumping, which was lush!

I think we might be ready to wean. He can sit up unaided for a few minutes (but eventually goes over sideways) and I gave him the calpol syringe we use for gaviscon and it went straight into his mouth for a chew. But he's only 23 weeks (but was over a week overdue...). What do you think?

Purpleprickles · 10/09/2016 15:51

Well yesterday E managed three forty min naps all led by herself while we were out and about walking. I don't see how she can do this one day and not the next. Today she has fought naps again and has just gone for one with dh on the bed after much screaming. It is beyond frustrating. But at the moment she is sleeping well at night so I feel like I can't have it all.

We ended up at the dr yesterday to have her chest checked as she has a cough, it's all clear but she keeps coughing after feeding and being sick. Mind you dh and I have the cough too so it's clearly a virus.

Me enjoy the wedding. We had no poos for two days and today we have had 3 enormous ones but only one escaped. Good luck!

Dom glad nursery was good, it's lovely if you get a key worker you feel comfortable with.

Time hello! SmileI slipped off the thread and haven't seen you on since I came back. How is C?

Has anyone watched Catastrophe? A friend recommended it and I've watched four of series one so far. It's made me laugh a lot which is great because I've been feeling quite tearful this week, keeping an eye on that. Also did anyone try Motherland this week? Just brilliant!

Trinpy · 10/09/2016 17:04

What's Catastrophe about purple? I've not heard of that before. I really need some more series to binge watch.

Dom maybe you could give him some steamed carrot or something and see how he gets on with it? I started weaning ds2 at 22 weeks, which I was a bit worried would be too early but he had all the signs of readiness so I just went for it in the end. He loves his food so it was definitely the right decision.

Hope you have fun at the wedding Me! What's his outfit like? I love cute dressed up babies Blush.

I was very happy this morning that ds2 had only woken up twice to feed overnight but when I thought about it some more, I also fed him when I went to bed and again when we got up in the morning so he actually only went 2.5-3 hours between feeds. So not quite as impressive as it seemed! Night weaning badly needed here.

Purpleprickles · 10/09/2016 19:06

Trin episodes are only 30 mins so prefect for a quick watch. It's about a couple that meet while he is over for work from the US. They have loads of sex in a week and she ends up pregnant so he comes back to be with her. This first series is I assume going to be all about the pregnancy and then the second series is about being parents. I somehow managed to watch one of those a while ago. It's funny but real and then one of those that can be a bit lump in throat at times too but then make you laugh out loud the next minute.

TheMshipIsBack · 10/09/2016 19:10

Someone asked about sleep training. We're two weeks into it and it's a mixed bag. T is a very stubborn baby and we usually have about an hour of crying still every night (down from 2+!) before she goes to sleep. But then she's fine in her cot till anywhere from 10pm till 2am, when she comes back in with us. I like having my evenings back. I go back to work one week Monday so it's necessary. Still no luck with the bottles, though! That one's going down to the wire.

Enjoy the wedding me! We did one when DS was 5 months and he was a gold star baby. No poonamis, quiet through the service, and we bunged him into the grandparents' car at 6pm so they could take him home for bed. Lots of other babies and toddlers were snoozing in their prams and carseats in a little room set aside for them at the reception.

Me624 · 10/09/2016 19:31

Well we're on our way back - so much for staying later, DS got very ratty as he barely napped this afternoon he was so interested in what was going on, and he just would not go to sleep in his pram or let me rock him to sleep. However I really can't complain as he was an absolute angel all day, smiley and giggly at appropriate times and quiet in the church!

He also, as you both predicted vroc and Dom, completely cleared himself out pretty much as soon as we arrived! DH offered to deal with it (wahey!) and he admirably managed to save the outfit other than the vest which is fine as we had spares!

Trinpy his outfit was from next and it was little brown chinos with braces (so cute!) , a white shirt and a navy blue jumper. He looked adorable!

DomesticAnarchist · 10/09/2016 20:01

Ha ha ha! Glad he was good and glad he's all un-bunged, Me! That outfit sounds very cute!

Thanks Trin, maybe I'll try some carrot, maybe I'll get the BLW book out again. I think he would have swiped my toast this morning, but it had honey on so I wasn't sharing!

TriJo · 10/09/2016 21:44

C has a tooth. RIP nipples. Shock

marmiteandcheeseplease · 10/09/2016 22:23

Aw outfit sounds well cute me, I love braces!

Don't panic trijo your nipples may be ok yet! Dd2 got her first tooth two weeks ago and cut her second last night. When the first one cut through it felt a bit uncomfortable (kind of scratchy?) But it's been fine since.

Bottle refusing sounds stressful mship. Dd1 was a bottle refuser so we haven't tried with dd2. Its my brothers fortieth in a few weeks and I want to go out to celebrate but dd2 still wakes for first night feed - could be as early as 9.30 or as late as 1am so suddenly realised I need to have some sort of plan! We're skipping bottles entirely and trying a beaker first then a cup later when I go back to work. Gave her a beaker of water this evening and let her play with it in her highchair, she seemed to get the general gist so I've dug out my pump and will try to pump just a little bit every morning for her to try to drink from a beaker to get used to it. I don't have as huge amount of confidence but we'll see...
